Penny Saver Pet of the Week Dobby is a rescue from the Virgin Islands. He got the name Dobby from the Harry Potter house elf because when he was a puppy he was all ears. His breed is a Coconut Retriever and his vet couldn’t wait to meet him because they’d never had a Coconut Retriever before. His nickname is giraffe because his neck is so long. He’s been the best addition to our family and makes us laugh daily. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

To sponsor the Pet of the Week, Call 226-8111 or email sales@gvpennysaver.com

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

And leave your self-centered attitude at the door, for everyone else's sake. Just wondering why, you feel your time is more valuable than the other people who are waiting their turn patiently in a checkout line? Thank you for Fargo Road Display! To the family on Fargo Road for the spectacular Christmas light display. We took our granddaughter last weekend and had so much fun. We are looking forward to next year. Hope to make this a new tradition. We loved the music, too. Thank you! A Batavia family Thank You Again, Avon Wesleyan Church! For sharing your time and talent with the community. Your living Nativity hayride was truly uplifting. The cooperation of the many volunteers was obvious in providing a well-organized, smoothly run experience for the many in attendance. The family picture, hot chocolate and cookies afterward were an unexpected bonus. Again, thank you so much for sharing.

Special thanks to the Totiakton Girl Scouts (and parents) who came caroling to our home in Honeoye Falls this past week. Really brightened up our day!! Keep it up. Thank you to those who are wishing us "MERRY CHRISTMAS." The "Happy Holiday" response is so insincere! Please don't be afraid of saying it. I am so tremendously grateful for the generous gift I received through the many fundraisers that the Avon High School Student Council put on in my name while I was going through chemotherapy through the first few months of the school year. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I could never thank you all enough. I am so fortunate to work in a

Every driver could use a refresher course in the rules of the road now and then, and your little sarcastic list was amusing until I read number eight. I disagree. Using your middle finger is never appropriate. It is cruel and hurtful. One young man found out too late how dangerous it was to flip someone

off in traffic. The insulted driver jumped out at the next red light and shot a bullet through the young man's head. You certainly sound proud of your ability to judge the rest of the driving world from your imaginary throne, but you fail to recognize that all human beings are battling some kind of crisis which may alter their driving skills from time to time. community that cares so much, and I am overjoyed to be back at work with all the amazing students, faculty and staff. Thank you. There is a Secret Santa in Batavia, NY! I was having a rough time shopping because of a needed knee replacement and must use a cane. I hobbled into Dollar Tree, did my shopping, and loaded the car. I got in and drove about a mile and noticed an envelope stuck under my windshield wiper! I pulled over and got it off the windshield. I was thinking, "what the heck?" On the envelope was written Season's Greetings. Inside was a $5 bill! At that very moment the song came on, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," then the sun came out, and then I cried tears of happiness. Little

did this Secret Santa know we had to bury my mother Christmas week and she is truly missed on Christmas. You really made my day! I will spread the joy further!

THANKS for putting the happy in our holiday.

START BREATHING CLEAN (NAPSI)—A new year, whether the one on the calendar or a more personal milestone, is a good time to give your health and well-being a new start, too. Here are three hints on how 1. Be active—but don’t set too high a goal. Just walking for 30 minutes a day, even in 10-minute increments, can make a difference. 2. Eat right. Go for more fruits and vegetables; fewer sugary drinks, red meats and high-fat, processed foods. 3. Reduce indoor pollution. Get your HVAC system cleaned by a NADCA professional. In most homes, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and build up in the ductwork. NADCA sets the industry standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. Learn More: For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.nadca.com. For a free Homeowner’s Guide to air duct cleaning, visit https://nadca.com/sites/default/files/docs/2017/nadca_ homeowners_guide_print_version.pdf.

Thank You The Family of Eric Holbrook would like to express our deepest appreciation for all the love and support blessed upon us during Eric’s illness and at the time of his passing. We are so thankful for all the prayers and words of encouragement as well as so many beautiful cards, wonderful hugs, delicious food and thoughtful gift cards, money and for all the visits. Eric loved his “visitors for the day,” they brightened his spirits more than words can say. Most of all we want to thank all who donated time to him when he was still working. You went above and beyond kindness. Eric loved these wise words of John Wesley: “Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.” God Bless us, everyone!

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2019

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Rare Cardiomyopathy Ends Football Season --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been informed that he has left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy. He has been VERY active his whole life, playing football, baseball, basketball and soccer all through high school. He had no symptoms. This was found when getting a physical for college, where he was supposed to play football, and he has been told that is now out of the question. The doctors are saying it’s a very rare condition, and they want to put in a defibrillator ASAP. -- Anon. ANSWER: Left ventricular noncompaction is a cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle) that is rarely diagnosed, but it probably has been under-recognized. It can run in families, so it’s recommended to examine relatives for the condition. It is diagnosed by echocardiogram, and some cases can be identified through genetic analysis. LVNC can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias and stroke. There is no specific treatment for LVNC, so people with the condition are treated for the manifestations of their disease. For people with heart failure, this means they are treated with the appropriate medications, which hopefully will prevent or at least slow down any damage to the heart. Management also can include an automated internal cardiac defibrillator (AICD) if the heart muscle is seriously weakened. People with LVNC and a history of serious arrhythmias should get an AICD as well. Since arrhythmias are very common in LVNC, AICDs may be used more frequently than with other causes of heart failure. Also, it is likely that your grandson’s doctor has more expertise than I in managing this condition, and certainly has more knowledge about his heart, so I would take the recommendation for AICD very seriously. It is strongly recommended he avoid competitive endurance sports and weightlifting. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 40 and was diagnosed with sarcoidosis recently. It was found in my left eye when my eye doctor noticed inflammation. I also was having vertigo and face pain. It wasn’t until I had a PET scan and they biopsied a lymph node that I got the diagnosis. I am on steroids and recently started taking methotrexate. I’m having horrible side effects (mostly mouth sores and losing my hair), and my original symptoms are coming back. I feel like my doctors don’t know how to treat this disease. I have been told that it is rare in my area. Where can I learn more about this disease and see if there are better and more current treatments? -- J.O. ANSWER: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease with an unknown cause. It most often affects younger people and women of African descent. The most commonly affected organs are the eyes and lungs, and lymph nodes are commonly enlarged. The severity can range from quite mild to life-threatening. The diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. Initial treatment usually consists of steroids, and methotrexate is often used. However, mouth sores and hair loss are both common complications. To find an expert with special expertise in treating sarcoidosis, I would start with your closest teaching hospital. Even though you haven’t told me about any lung disease, pulmonologists tend to have expertise in treatment of sarcoid, even when it affects organs other than the lungs. Most large hospitals have websites where you can search for doctors with expertise in a certain disease. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. JANUARY 2019 “Tax Forms Alert!!” Please be patient while we wait for tax forms! As more and more taxpayers use forms online, we wonder how long this service will be available to us. The Library voluntarily participates in the IRS Tax Form program, but we don’t have control over this service! We can only suggest you stop in to check on availability of forms. We are doing the best we can! While waiting, take a look at the online site http://www.IRS.Gov/GetReady. This IRS outreach campaign serves to inform as many taxpayers as possible about steps they can take regarding changes that could affect their ability to file their tax returns in a timely manner thereby getting refunds as quickly as possible. “Baby’s Book Buddies Storytime” Ms. Mary Ellen presents the Winter session of Baby’s Book Buddies held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. This early literacy program for those ages 6 months to 3 years old instills a love of reading in your child that will help prepare him or her for success in school. Your Baby will learn new words, songs and fingerplays, and there is even space for a “play” session with new friends. All the books Ms. Mary Ellen reads in Baby’s Book Buddies also qualify for our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program! You can sign up for 1000 Books when your child attends Baby’s Book Buddies. Ms. Mary Ellen wants to know your child is coming so please stop in, or call the Library at 585-335-6720, to register. “1000 Books B4K Celebration!” On Saturday, January 26 at 10:30 a.m., Ms. Mary Ellen will be hosting the first celebration of our readers who are participating in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program! This event will recognize each child’s special achievements in reading! There will be awards, snacks, games, singing and book fun! 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national initiative to encourage parents/caregivers to read 1,000 books to their children

before they enter Kindergarten. Recent studies (www.parents.com) show babies learn language from the rhythm, tones and inflections of your voice, increased vocabulary from hearing books read as a baby leads to higher scores in school readiness testing. By participating in 1000 Books B4K and just by reading one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years, thereby providing their children essential early literacy skills. Children can join at any time! Participants will receive a start-up folder with a reading log to keep track of the book titles they have read. Any pre-K child, ages 0-5 years, may register for the program at Dansville Public Library. The Library has a special collection of books to borrow just for this program. For more information, please call the library at 585-335-6720. “Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day” The library will be closed on Monday, January 21st in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; we will reopen on Tuesday, January 22nd at 10 a.m. Don’t forget you can renew your materials online when we are closed, simply go to dansvillelibrary.org and click on “catalog.” “Important Coming Event – Advocacy Day” February 27th we will be traveling to Albany again with other library supporters from across the state to meet with our State Legislators. We need YOU to help communicate your needs and by asking for an increase in statewide library aid. As a supporter of the Dansville Public Library, we know that you believe in the vital services we offer our community. Our Legislators respond best when we arrive in person! Please contact Director Terry Dearing at 585-335-6720 if you are willing to spend the day with other Library supporters! Consider joining us in February so we are able to provide the essential library services you need!

6 ways to make bathrooms a safer place Homes should be safe havens. But each year injuries in and around the home contribute to millions of medical visits and many fatalities each year. Although anywhere in a home can be the scene of an accident, bathrooms tend to be the most dangerous room in the house. Slippery tile, the presence of water, stockpiled medications, and many sharp and hard edges in a small space pose several different hazards in the bathroom, particularly for young children and people age 65 and up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls, which can result in serious injuries like hip fractures and head trauma, are the cause of 80 percent of all bathroom accidents. Many bathroom accidents are preventable with some easy modifications. 1. Reduce slippery surfaces. Wet tile is a recipe for slick conditions. Bath rugs with rubber backing can provide traction in the bathroom, as can nonslip mats placed on the floor of the bathtub or shower enclosure. Water-resistant flooring made from recycled rubber is another option. It is softer, less slippery and more forgiving than traditional tile flooring. 2. Install lever-style fixtures. Round knobs in the bathroom can be difficult to grasp, especially for the elderly or those with arthritis. Lever-style fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help alleviate scalding from not being able to adequately adjust the water temperature. 3. Utilize transfer benches and shower seats. A transfer bench can help reduce injuries that occur when trying to climb over a tub wall. Benches are placed outside of the tub and a person sits and then swings his legs over the ledge. Transfer benches also can be

used in conjunction with shower seats. This is a chair or bench that allows people to sit while they shower. 4. Discard old medications. Clean out the medicine cabinet of old or expired medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This reduces the likelihood of medication confusion, and does not put potentially harmful pills and syrups into the hands of children. 5. Install grab bars. Properly installed grab bars around the shower and toilet area can provide leverage and stability. AARP says many injuries to seniors occur when they are attempting to sit or get up from the toilet. Grab bars or an elevated toilet seat can help. 6. Install motion-detecting lights. These lights turn on automatically upon detecting movement, making them beneficial for people who routinely visit the bathroom in the middle of the night. Adequate illumination also can help reduce fall risk. Bathroom safety should be made a priority. Various modifications can make bathrooms safer for people of all ages.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world.

The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. SPORTS QUIZ

Sledding can be great fun and excellent winter exercise with a bit of preparation. Our tips and favorite local hills can help make your sledding trip a success. Check the weather forecast. Even though the temperature outside may not be especially low, other weather factors, such as wind chill, are important to take into consideration. Checking an hourly forecast can allow you to see potential storm fronts and temperature drops and prepare accordingly. Don’t forget to use SPF on any exposed skin! Dress in warm, waterproof layers. Complete coverage is essential, especially for children. Gloves or mittens and coats in absorbent materials are not ideal unless the exterior is water-resistant. Snow pant cuffs ideally secure around the outside of the boots, preventing snow from landing inside and soaking the socks and feet. Hats should completely cover ears. Underneath this winter gear, wear layers of natural, moisture-wicking fibers, such as cotton, to keep “pockets” of warm air next to the body. Choose your sled. Check for a steering mechanism. Some sleds have simple steering along the front. Many sleds do not. Younger riders and riders on busy hills may want to avoid sleds which they cannot quickly steer away from others or away from obstacles. Several types of sleds are directed by the way in which the rider leans; however, this may not be ideal for all riders and situations. Know your limits. Conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia can occur with exposure to cold weather. According to the American Red Cross, symptoms for frostbite include a lack of feeling in the affected area, skin that appears waxy, is cold to the touch, or is discolored (flushed, white or gray, yellow or blue). Hypothermia symptoms include such things as shivering which may stop as one’s body temperature continues to drop, numbness, a glassy stare, apathy, weakness, impaired judgment and loss of consciousness. Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should be moved to a warm environment. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and furthermore, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer like the AeroPress coffee maker you can brew a rich, delicious cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The process is simple, clean up is fast and easy, and the grounds including the filter are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Give the gift of a manual brewing device to help your friends brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and they’ll thank you for helping them get the most out of every bag of coffee they buy. GIVE THE GIFT OF DELICIOUS COFFEE (NAPSI)—Have you ever wondered what to buy a friend for the holidays and wished you could get them something that they would enjoy every day? Everyone has at least one friend who simply cannot live without their coffee. If that friend uses a pod brewing system, they are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor and value. When they buy coffee pods, they are paying about $40 per pound of coffee. A drip coffee maker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but people probably waste half the coffee that they brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Romantic aspects are high at this time for single Lambs looking for love. Warm and fuzzy feelings also are at enhanced levels for Rams and Ewes in paired relationships. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors what Taureans dote on -namely, love and money. Look for more meaningful relationships for both singles and pairs, as well as an improved financial outlook. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) All lingering shreds of that recent bout with boredom are dissipated as you eagerly accept a challenging offer. Your positive mood persuades others to join you in this venture. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might need validation for a possible solution to a situation involving someone close to you. Consider asking a trusted friend or relative to help you with this problem. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Investigate carefully before agreeing to assist a friend or colleague with a personal problem. There might be hidden factors that could emerge later that will create problems for you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your decision to work with an associate rather than go it alone, as you first proposed, brings an unexpected bonus. Be careful not to be judgmental. Allow for free and open discussion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A loved one’s health problem could, once again, make demands on your time and attention. But this time, make some demands of your own, and insist that others pitch in and help. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time for the traditionally staid Scorpion to plan adjustments in your day-to-day schedules. Be more flexible and allow for more impromptu, off-the-cuff actions. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid creating unnecessary fuss over a situation you don’t approve of. If it’s going to work, it will do so despite your objections. If it fails, it will do so without a push from you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Working with a trusted colleague could open your mind to exploring some considerations you previously dismissed out of hand. The weekend brings news from a loved one. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Resolving a recent problem leaves you in a good position to strengthen your influence on how things get done. But continue to encourage ideas and suggestions from others. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new friend suggests an interesting opportunity. But check it out before you snap at it. It might be a good deal for some people, but it might not work in helping you reach your goals. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of helping people solve their problems, making you a most-respected counselor and trusted friend. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
