HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be busier than you had expected right now. But between the socializing rounds and the workplace tasks, there are opportunities for special moments with that certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creative approach leads to a quickerthan-expected solution to a workplace problem. Now you can devote more time to that proposal you hope to introduce by midmonth. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Technological glitches create problems early on. But by midweek, all runs smoothly once again, and you’re well and truly on your way to meeting all your deadlines. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your energy levels are high, and you feel you can handle everything that comes along. But try to take a break from your hectic pace for some quiet time with someone close to you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Before you pounce on that shiny new opportunity, take more time to check it out to see how much substance actually lies beneath all that glitter. A family member has important news. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A personal situation you thought was resolved resurfaces, thanks to a possibly well-intentioned move that went awry. Deal with it as soon as possible. Accept the help of a trusted friend. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) That goal you set way back when is finally in sight. Maintain your focus on achieving it, and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant demands for your attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A temperamental flare-up creates negative feelings that need to be dealt with immediately. But things once again go well after the apologies are made and hurt feelings are soothed. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An early impulsive act causes confusion. But all is smoothed over once explanations are made. Expect a friend or family member to ask for your kind and always wise advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might have to do some juggling of your priorities, as a personal matter appears to require more time and attention. Put your pride aside and accept help from those who offer it. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Your creative aspect is strong. Not only does it help you accomplish your goals, but it also inspires others. This could lead to a potentially rewarding collaboration opportunity. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful about making major decisions when you’re not really committed to them. And resist any pressure to do otherwise. Better to delay action until all doubts are resolved. BORN THIS WEEK: You set goals and are rarely distracted by any attempt to move you off the path you’ve chosen to reach them. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Forget Bottled Water, Tap Water Is Better --DEAR DR. ROACH: Bottled and purified water sales have increased over the years. I often see advertisements showing filters attached to faucets that “take out all impurities.” My parents had a water softener, and my father, professionally involved in weight-bearing physical activity, experienced demineralization of his skeleton and a broken hip. It has been suggested that the water softener took minerals, including calcium, out of the water that my parents used to cook and drink. I drink tap water, but is a large percentage of the U.S. population headed for demineralization and malnutrition because they drink only “purified water”? -- C.D. ANSWER: Most water softeners work by exchanging sodium for the “hard” minerals, especially magnesium and calcium, present in most tap water, to greater or lesser extent. If the water in your area is naturally very hard, then a significant amount of sodium may be added, and calcium and magnesium removed. However, this is very rarely a problem, and almost certainly had nothing to do with why your father had a hip fracture. We get our minerals mostly from food, not from water. The major risk factors for osteoporosis in men are smoking, alcohol, low testosterone levels and low vitamin D, although there are many other causes. I don’t recommend bottled water or water purifiers because in most of the United States and Canada, the water quality is excellent. Bottled water is 1,000 times more expensive than tap water where I live. I have been to places where the tap water doesn’t taste so good, in which case I would recommend a filter over bottled water. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of Propecia for female hair loss? I am a female in my late 50s, and I have suffered from hair loss for many years. After numerous blood tests, a biopsy and exams, my dermatologist determined that I have androgenic alopecia. I have been on Aldactone, and have used minoxidil for quite a while, with minimal results, if any. For the past eight months, I have been taking Propecia, 2.5 mg daily. My hair doesn’t seem any better or worse, but I worry about its side effects. Can you please give me your opinion on the use of Propecia by women? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? -- R.M. ANSWER: Male pattern hair loss will occur in up to 80 percent of men and 40 percent of women, with age being the primary risk factor. Hair loss can affect self-image and self-esteem significantly, probably even more in women than in men. Diagnosis usually is made by appearance, but a biopsy is sometimes necessary to rule out lesscommon causes. Finasteride (Propecia) is a blocker of dihydrotestosterone, and although it frequently is used in men, is not approved for use in women. It should not be used by women who could become pregnant. Women (and men) should not donate blood while taking finasteride. However, it is sometimes used “off-label,” and one study showed that although it did not cause regeneration of hair, it did slow further loss. Side effects of weight gain, loss of libido, depression and fatigue are listed as possible. I have no personal experience of women using this medication. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW Although residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible. In M arch 2014, North America w as covered by the third-highest amount of snow that late in the season since record keeping began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center. Snow can begin in September and October in some northern areas and stretch on until early spring. It pays to learn the best w ays to deal w ith snow and to incorporate some environmentally friendly strategies as w ell. The most eco-friendly w ay to remove snow is to w ait until the spring thaw w hen it’ll melt. Unfortunately that is not practical for most people. Therefore homeow ners and business ow ners need to look to other methods to clear drivew ays, parking lots and sidew alks of the w hite stuff.

A round of best wishes to you and yours at this festive time of year.

GIFTS THAT PAMPER AND REJUVENATE Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation.

GIFTING IDEAS FOR BUDGET-CONSCIOUS FAMILIES Share experiences in lieu of exchanging gifts. Adults tend to be more difficult to shop for than children, as many adults can simply buy their own gadgets, clothing and other items commonly given during the holiday season. To save money, adults can forgo gifting traditional gifts to one another, instead resolving to provide an experience for a loved one. Invite a loved one over for a homecooked meal or offer to take a family member out to dinner once the holiday season has come and gone and there’s more room in the budget.

As another year comes full circle, we’re reminded of how fortunate we are to be surrounded by such a supportive community of friends and customers. Thank you for making our year complete. Merry Christmas & Best Wishes!

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5

• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). One of those ways is by helping to reduce the symptoms of depression. Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

Thank you, Avon Merchants! The Avon business community opened their doors with specials at each location. There was wine tasting, hot chocolate, hot dogs and chili. The village hall was filled with many vendor tables selling great items. The evening ended with a beautiful lighting of trees around the village circle. It was a great day for our community. Can’t wait to see how they top it next year! Proud Avon Resident A Grateful Motorist - I absolutely love gas pump handles that you can click and hold the flow of gas into your car, especially at this time of year when you can get back into your warm car and let the pump do its thing. Unfortunately, these customer-friendly pump handles

are getting extremely hard to find. If you're in Avon, they'll actually pump your gas for you at the Valero gas station at 338 Wadsworth Ave. (Route 39). Let's get those user-friendly pump handles back for all us motorists.

Things people should know about creating wills Drafting a last will and testament is an essential component of estate planning. Despite the importance of having a will, a recent survey from AARP found that two out of five Americans over the age of 45 do not have one. Putting wishes down on paper helps avoid unnecessary work and sometimes heartache upon the death of a loved one. Wills allow heirs to act with the decedent’s wishes in mind, and can ensure that assets and possessions will end up in the right hands. Estate planning can be tricky, which is why many people turn to attorneys to get the job done right. Attorneys who specialize in estate planning will no doubt discuss the following topics with their clients. • Assets owned: Make a list of known assets and figure out which assets are covered by the will and which will have to be passed on according to other estate laws, such as through joint tenancy on a deed or a living trust. For example, life insurance policies or retirement plan proceeds will be distributed to your named beneficiaries. A will also can cover other assets, such as photographs, clothing, cars, and jewelry. • Guardianship: Parents’ wills should include a declaration of who they want to become guardians their underage children or dependents. • Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will.

Did You Know? Though vaccines are usually associated with childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations as they age. Even those who received immunizations as youngsters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifically to the over 50 crowd. • Funeral instructions: Settling probate will not happen until after the funeral. Therefore, funeral wishes in a will often go unnoticed, states the legal advisement resource Find Law. • Executor: An executor is a trusted person who will carry out the terms of the will. This person should be willing to serve and be capable of executing the will. People who die without a valid will become intestate. This means the estate will be settled based on the laws of where that person lived, and a court-appointed administrator will serve in the capacity to transfer property. This administrator will be bound by laws and may make decisions that go against the decedent’s wishes. To avoid this outcome, a will and other estate planning documents are crucial.

Heads Up for Library Holiday Hours! SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

HOCUS-FOCUS 1. Lamp is missing. 2. Ear flap is smaller. 3. Sign is different. 4. Number is different. 5. Pocketbook is missing. 6. Wreath is missing.

These days, when Christmas rolls around, many children look forward to a visit from jolly old Saint Nick, i.e. Santa Claus. While we would like to give a respectful shout out to Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Omisoka and additional December holidays, our focus here is Saint Nicholas, a fascinating historical personality. Every year, many parents and grandparents retell the stories of this magical, rotund, white-bearded man in a red and white suit visiting the homes of children late on Christmas Eve and leaving them presents or lumps of coal, of his magical North Pole toy making headquarters and elven helpers, his flying sleigh and reindeer and his penchant for cookies and saying, “Ho, ho, ho!” This is the folklore that has come down to us through the centuries, but do you know the history of the original Santa Claus? Santa Claus was very much alive from the late 3rd century to the middle of the 4th century, approximately 280-343 AD. Santa Claus, derived from the name “Saint Nicholas,” was a 3rd & 4th century man who rose to prominence as the Bishop of Myra, a small Roman town in what is now modern-day Turkey. However, being the Bishop of Myra was not an historically exceptional position or honor. So, how did this relatively minor Catholic Church official who died over 1,500 years ago become a household name across the globe? It certainly wasn’t by being fair-haired, fat and jolly! Saint Nicolas was not Nordic or Western European as he is now often portrayed, but Greek, and unlike his rotund figure and often impish features, history suggests he had a strong but trim frame. A firebrand, he staunchly and outspokenly defended Church doctrine against the persecution it faced in 303 AD. This wave of violent persecution abated in 313 AD with Constantine and the Edict of Milan. Interestingly, standing against persecution is not how he gained notoriety, although it does establish Saint Nicholas as a brave man, unafraid to stand up for others. It was his generosity and his defense of others, particularly children, that launched His international popularity. One of the most famous Saint Nicholas stories describes a poor man with three daughters for whom he could not find husbands due to a lack of a dowry.

If unmarried, the girls faced a bleak future. Saint Nicholas, touched by the young girls’ plight, slipped bags of coins into the man’s house down the chimney. These coins often fell into the stockings hanging by the fire to dry, hence the resulting tradition of hanging stockings for gifts. Yet another story recounts a time when Saint Nicholas protected three boys, traveling students, bringing them back to life. In this way, Saint Nicholas became famous as a protector and benefactor of children. There are many positive messages to be found in the legend of Santa Claus with such elements as his generosity and his encouragement of good behavior, and the children of today could learn much from history’s real Saint Nicholas, as well. Many of his qualities and deeds are admirable. He protected and gave generously to those in need, especially some of humanity’s most vulnerable members: children. Even 1,675 years later, Saint Nicholas’ compassion, his strong, kind spirit and his humble generosity live on in the giving, joy and hope of Christmas. Merry Christmas

Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn.
