Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

B-12 Shot Paralyzes Arm

Lakeville • 585.286.3664

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my

Henrietta • 585.359.4987

---

doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

Give Back

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

the Flying Observatory

Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...

To Infinity and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!

SOFIA Word

Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula

How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt by Dinky Doo Petting Zoo a Success By Amanda Dudek

T

he atmosphere inside Dinky Doo Petting Zoo was alive with excitement and anticipation which the drizzling rain could not dampen. Families had begun to trickle in just before noon, and several arrived before 12:30pm, although the Easter Egg Hunt was not scheduled until 1pm. Families were welcome to line up for free face painting as they waited. They could also walk down a nearby hall area to visit the Easter Bunny and pet furry guinea pigs. Costumed characters were there to greet them, including a clown, Pooh Bear, the Cat in the Hat, a chicken and, of course, the Easter Bunny. Parents bought tickets in an Easter 50/50 raffle and perused the merchandise around the store area. Tack, furniture, stuffed animals, jewelry and more lined the walls and stood along the edges of the main room. As the time for the hunt drew near, the room continued to fill with families. Children between the ages of 2 and 9-years-old were welcome to participate in the hunt itself, although children of all ages came along for the excitement and the petting zoo. Dinky Doo Petting Zoo Owner, Cherie Carter, began announcing the time until the hunt, which only served to heighten the anticipation. Each participating child was handed a pretty plastic bag in which to collect eggs, and each bag was numbered. Cherie reminded children to hold onto their bags as each number corresponded to a special prize which they would receive after the hunt. At last, with the main room packed full of eager children and their families, it was time. Everyone poured outside to the pine trees blossoming with brightly colored eggs. The Easter Egg Hunt area was cordoned off with yellow tape so that everyone knew where to look. Young children were invited to the front, along with their parents if needed, and a few guidelines were put in place. Then, they were off, scurrying everywhere and quickly pulling egg after egg from the trees. Little children, in the arms of their parents, reached deep into the branches for hidden eggs others left behind, their faces full of delight. At last, there were no more eggs to be found, and guests made their way towards a decorated room set up with tables where many of them opened their eggs. This room, conveniently located off the main hallway, is available for rent on such occasions as birthday parties, for example. Families then had the option of visiting the petting zoo for a small cost, and many did so. Petting zoo guests were given small bags of food for the rabbits and the pigs. First, when children entered, they were met by sheep, goats,

llamas and donkeys. They made their way to a separate space at the back of the room to find many rabbits eager for food. These rabbits were friendly and were willing to be petted in exchange for the tasty veggies the children carried. Children then moved out-of-doors into a play area surrounded by more enclosed animals, such as peacocks, donkeys and even pigs, their little tails wagging happily, which gently took veggies from visitors’ hands. As people made their way back inside, the winning number for the 50/50 raffle was called, and the winner exclaimed with delight as she made her way to the front. Bag numbers were being called and prizes given to the children, including bubbles, books and stuffed animals. As each child received his or her prize in turn, families began to make their way home. Guests truly seemed to enjoy and appreciate the free Easter Egg Hunt, face painting and prizes which Cherie Carter and Dinky Doo Petting Zoo hosted for their community. The event was successful, a highlight of the season in spite of the rain. One guest was overheard commenting how pleased they were to be able to attend this event even with the rain. This feeling, that even the rain was more enjoyable when Easter Egg hunting at Dinky Dooís, was the sentiment of the crowd that day. Around 100 children participated in this hunt, exceeding all expectations. Cherie Carter could not be more thrilled. The children had fun hunting for eggs and also enjoyed the petting zoo. Dinky Doo Petting Zoo would like to thank the community for making this event such a huge success and hopes to see everyone again soon. For more information on Dinky Doo Petting Zoo, visit their website at www.dinkydoospettingzoo.wixsite.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

(NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4.

What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org.

• On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.

When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gardening pointers for novices

Awning

People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

America’s #1 Best-Selling Awnings jlemke55@gmail.com

Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

Could the “wimp” who needs an “Energy Shot” every day, please use some of their new-found energy to stop and pick up all the containers that they throw out the window on [local road] near [local] Cemetery? What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. However, after Unplanned exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $6.3 million, landing it in 4th place for weekend box office sales, it is still not on your screens for the first week of April. Instead you have continued to carry the 5th and 6th best-selling movies from the weekend. Is this deliberate censorship GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

If it is a result of bad planning, I hope that, in the future, you would know your audience better and show movies that support life, family, marriage, hope and God. It is certainly better than the average garbage put out by Hollywood on a monthto-month basis. I use the local library often. I grew up respecting that others are there reading and studying. Can’t thank you enough to allow us to relive the horror you inflicted on our family. I guess you ran out of salt for our wounds. Nice to know more about the people who live in our neighborhood.

Inquire at: 585-727-8808 or e-mail: ben@diversifiedcontracting.com DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
