Real Estate ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

A shout out to Edgar at Cameron Community Ministries!! This organization is an urban outreach community center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY where 98% of residents in the neighborhood live in poverty. My husband and I had bicycles that we no longer rode and wanted to donate. We contacted Edgar who indicated that he knew of people who could use them. We set up a drop off time and were met by two guys who unloaded them from our vehicle. Within an hour after we dropped them off Edgar sent us an email indicating that the bicycles had already been spoken for. We appreciate Edgar’s willingness to help us give our
Mind your language!! I recently attended a local festival at a park. I'll get straight to the point. There were about 20+ teens playing basketball on a court at the park, and they were swearing like sailors! Using every cuss word available! From the F word to the N word. Let me remind you that there were families at the park that day, with 4 and 7 yr olds! Can we please mind our
bicycles directly to individuals who needed them. Thank you to the staff at Genesee Valley Penny Saver! You folks are wonderful! Love my Penny Saver! Thank you to Jim and Julie for letting us use your pool. You guys are wonderful neighbors and we’re so lucky to have you - year ‘round! The B Family Thank you to Maria’s Sunshine and Dreams Fund, your organization is a beautiful representation of everything Maria was passionate about in
language out in public?? Not only do the words imprint in little ones’ minds, it also makes a very bad first impression for you. It makes you look like disrespectful, immature teens. What happened to teaching your kids manners?? Hey....landlords who own property on 'the hill'...your rentals need TLC! PLEASE take the time to clean and spruce them up! They could definitely use some paint and the windows and porches are in desperate need of repair. Take some pride in the way they look. You reside at an upscale apartment complex, but apparently lack the common sense & decency, or of just being a good neighbor when you walk your dog to do his business, and then after bagging it, instead of taking it with you, you walk over to a nearby restaurant, and toss it
life. The foundation has truly blessed us and our family beyond what we could have imagined. We are grateful for the many people involved in the foundation who selflessly give their time and energy to help kids and their families who have fallen into times of unexpected medical struggles. A Sunshine Recipient Thank you to Miguel at the Hook and Spoon for his exceptional customer service. He ran out to the docks to help us safely dock our boat, then went out of his way to serve this pregnant lady a delicious frozen
in the outside trash container. Not sure what you are thinking, if anything, as people enter, and eat near here. We see who you are, and can identify you. We have notified management, and they are now aware of your little scheme. You should be ashamed. Response to vent about married women's last name. Why is it anyone else's business what last name a married woman chooses? I never changed my name when I married 35 years ago, and neither did my husband. Women are not men's property. Marriage is a partnership of equals. Believe me, you can file your income tax jointly using both names, and sometimes the woman is the primary wage earner too! Live and let live. I just moved here & can't believe [local] Street. I can count at least 30 vehicles per hour racing past without a muffler! We

can't hear ourselves talk inside our own house. I do hope the police start doing something about this, IT IS PART OF EVERYONE'S INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS. Then there are 30 to 50 vehicles every 15 minutes that don't stop at [local] St. I even called the gas company about one of their trucks going right through, only because there was a school bus that had the rightof-way but luckily stopped & waited. If police would just monitor that intersection, [town] could be RICH...! Response to vent about riding with your kids on tractors. It is none of your business if I want to take a child on the tractor, I will. If you feel that you are not steady enough to do so, then don't. Don't spy on people just to make sure they are up to your standards. We just had a fence put up to protect ourselves from people like you. Have a nice day!!!!!!!

Did you know? The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Making an Informed Health Decision --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization. I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery. It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice Always practice summer sun safety Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage.
Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your persistence pays off as the information you demanded starts to come through. The pace is slow at first, but it begins to speed up as the week draws to a close. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unwelcome bit of news jolts the Bovine, who would prefer that things proceed smoothly. But it’s at most a momentary setback. A Leo brings more welcome tidings. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to pay close attention to the details before making a commitment. Don’t accept anything that seems questionable, unless you get an answer that can be backed up. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Congratulations on getting that project up and running. But as exciting as it is, don’t let it carry you away. Make sure you set aside time to spend with family and friends. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be sure you are part of the discussion involving your suggestions. Your presence ensures that you can defend your work, if necessary. It also helps gain your colleagues’ support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding needs to be dealt with, or it can grow and cause more problems later on. Be the bigger person and take the first step to clear the air. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Set some strict guidelines for yourself so your heavier-than-usual work schedule doesn’t overwhelm the time you need to spend relaxing with loved ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel a little uncomfortable being among people you hardly know. But remember that today’s strangers can become tomorrow’s valuable contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Reward yourself for all that you’ve accomplished despite some annoying situations that got in your way. Enjoy a well-earned getaway with someone special. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Realizing that someone else is taking credit for what you did is bound to get anyone’s goat, but especially yours. Be patient. The truth soon comes out. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Forget about opposites attracting. What you need is to find someone who thinks like you and will support your ideas, even if others say they’re too radical. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Workplace problems can affect your financial plans. Be prudent and avoid running up bills or making commitments until things begin to ease up by the 27th. BORN THIS WEEK: Your intuition helps you communicate easily with people and understand their needs. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

Seniors’ senses of smell and taste change with age Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect. Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well. The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60. Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates. Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink. Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline. This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors. Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life. Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

Did You Know? Cardiac arrest, is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Though often mistaken as the same thing as a heart attack, cardiac arrest is not the same. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest and even lead to death, but the cause of heart attack and cardiac arrest are different.
Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help. It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist. Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
