Lima Horse Rescue Celebrates 10 Years with Open House By Amanda Dudek with excerpts from BAHR n October 2009, three friends with a shared love for horses formed Begin Again Horse Rescue, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit (BAHR). 10 years later, BAHR continues its mission to rescue, physically and mentally rehabilitate and re-home horses in need. With their Open House on October 13th, they will celebrate having already safely placed 176 horses in permanent lease adoptive homes. 2019 has been quite the year of firsts for BAHR. “We had our first horse show in Newark,” said Jennifer Lilly, Vice President and founding member. “We also held our first golf scramble tournament. In 2018, we opened a donations-based tack shop at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock last fall, and it has gotten so popular that we are moving to a larger building nearby.” “Every year since we began in 2009, we’ve grown in numbers, knowledge and supporters,” said BAHR Executive Director Harriett Rubins. “One by one, we are making a difference in the lives of at-risk horses in our community. We are a small group filled with huge dedicated hearts.”

I

The exciting upcoming Open House will include informative presentations from local equine experts such as a farrier and a horse nutritionist, farm tours, raffles, kids activities and volunteer information. This event will not only raise critical funds for covering the sizeable winter expenses for the rescued horses currently in the care of BAHR, but also awareness of its mission. The rescue has been acknowledged by several organizations for its high standards including three-time winner of ASPCA Help A Horse national contest, consistently achieving a Guidestar Platinum rating for transparency and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuary verification. BAHR still has several adoptable horses available, including those featured here. For more information, to volunteer, to donate, adopt or for more information about the Open House or becoming a sponsor, please contact Begin Again Horse Rescue at 585-322-2427 or email at www.beginagainrescue.org.

Jolene is one of our most celebrated equines, given her size, her personality and her story. Jo is a 12-year-old mammoth molly mule, standing about 17.2 hands high. We found her standing in a pen at a kill pen auction, unable to raise her head due to cramped space. Her hooves were obviously neglected and very painful, although we did not know to what extent. After veterinary examination, it was found that Big Jo had multiple hoof ailments, and they were unsure if she could recover. Four trips to Cornell for treatments, countless hours of patient care by volunteers, and now years of attention have resulted in Jolene living comfortably. She will never be a working mule, but her loving disposition wins every visitor’s heart.

Pandora is a 12-year-old registered appaloosa mare who stands about 15 hands tall. She is a pretty solid bay color with a big star. She was part of a 2018 neglect case in Ontario County which resulted in the death of one horse and the legal seizure of three others. Dora is now healthy and ready for a home of her own. She is sound, has no special health needs, no vices and has started training as a riding horse. She has proven to be smart, athletic and willing to learn. She will require a rider experienced enough to finish her training but could go in any direction: pleasure or show.

Boo is a 6-year-old, 42” Shetland/Miniature cross mare. She has had a short but troubled past, starting with neglect as a youngster before she was surrendered into rescue with her sister. Difficult behavior brought her to BAHR, and after intensive veterinary diagnosis, it was discovered she suffers from gut ulcers. When Boo is under stress or in pain from the ulcers, she may act out aggressively. When she is relaxed and happy, she is sweet and willing. She has now been trained in hand obstacles and jumping, and also has been trained in long lines to drive. Boo will require a home experienced in the signs and treatment of gut ulcers with no small children. She is otherwise sound and healthy and has been turned out with other horses both large and small.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR TOM & JUDY BREWTON OCTOBER 19th - COHOCTON A memorial service for Tom and Judy Brewton will be held at 1pm on October 19th at the First Presbyterian Church at 54 Maple Ave. in Cohocton. Dick was born April 1, 1935 in Troupsburg, NY, the son of Darius “Dee” and Mary “Mamie” (Tonkery) Hober. Dick grew up in the Wayland area and remained a lifelong resident. He graduated from Wayland Central School in 1952 and was a 1956 graduate of Bucknell University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. While at Bucknell, Dick played football and baseball and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was also a member of ROTC and remained actively involved in the US Army Reserves for many years earning the rank of Captain. Dick and Elizabeth “Betty” Gormel were married August 11, 1956 at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church in Nunda, NY. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Dick’s career spanned a few different areas. He began as a sales representative for Prudential Insurance Company. After a few years, he started Hober’s Tire Service and Excavation with his father. Eventually, Dick became the owner and operator of the family business and managed it until his retirement. He was proud to build the Wayland-Cohocton Varsity Baseball field, which was a benchmark for many other school fields in the area. In 1996, Dick was elected Town of Wayland Highway Superintendent and remained in that position for 8 years. With his sons, Dick also maintained a Christmas tree farm, which his family will continue to operate. He learned to make evergreen wreaths when he was young and his skills were unmatched! Dick’s hobbies were many, but he mostly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. As a result of his skills in turkey calling and hunting, he became friends with Neil Cost, the editor of Turkey Call Magazine, and enjoyed many successful hunts with him. During deer hunting season, he was affectionately known by his hunting comrades as “The General!” This group, which included family and friends, was very successful throughout the years. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Dee and Mamie Hober; and a brother, Donald Hober. He is survived by his wife Betty Hober of Wayland; his children, Kim Hober (Frank Gigliotti) of Pittsford, Richard Jr. (Amy) Hober of Pittsford, Michael (Yvette) Hober of NJ, Joseph (Stacey) Hober of Canandaigua and Thomas (Phyllis) Hober of Wayland; his grandchildren, Phil, Nick, Ricky, Matt, Thomas, Marissa, Cash and Mason; his brother, Robert “Boober” (Fran) Hober of OH; several nieces and nephews; and several close life-long friends. Dick’s family and friends are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11am at St. Joseph’s Church, 206 Fremont St., Wayland, NY. Committal prayers and interment will take place immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland. Contributions in memory of Richard T. Hober may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572. For online condolences please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com.

I cherish the loneliness of autumn.... I am forty, I have become mortal. I have no further psychic, emotional, or intellectual need to prolong summer seasons, and it is only when autumn begins its play that I can truly focus on the rich and vital life I am living. All of a sudden I grow alert. October is a hallelujah! reverberating in my body year-round.... The air is dusty, it smells of dry pine needles; yet I sense imminent ice in the clear blue sky.... How I appreciate everything…fully! After all, tomorrow this reprieve will be buried by blizzards, crushed under slabs of doomsday ice. I cannot waste a minute indoors! I must take advantage of this gift, wedged so tentatively between summer’s hectic somnolence and winter’s harsh apogee.... Each perfect day, I know, is going to be the last beautiful day of autumn. ~John Nichols (b.1940), The Last Beautiful Days of Autumn

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It may be hard to believe, but there is an official competition to see who can sit in a sauna for the longest period of time. The World Sauna Championships have taken place in Heinola, Finland, annually since 1999. The starting temperature is 110 F, and a liter of water is poured on the stove every 30 seconds. The winner is the last person who is able to leave the sauna without assistance. Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business! Thank you for not only a job well done, but more importantly, thank you for being kind, courteous, and considerate while taking care of your customers’ needs.

backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender . I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

How to give back to seniors in your community The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives. Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease. Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back, and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand. • Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years. • Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little help in this area can go a long way for seniors. Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors. Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs. • Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in singlefamily homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance. Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored. Helping aging neighbors is a great way to give back and build strong communities. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CROSSWORD

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Mata Hari claimed to have been born in a sacred temple, but in reality, the exotic dancer was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Holland. • On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Capone had avoided long stints in jail by bribing city officials and intimidating witnesses, and tax evasion was the only way federal agent Elliot Ness and “The Untouchables” could get him.

ACROSS

• On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. His X-1 rocket plane was dropped from a B-29 aircraft, rocketed to 40,000 feet and exceeded 662 mph. * On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. The vehicle, a combination sedan-pickup truck built on a station-wagon platform, was discontinued two years later, but was brought back in 1964.

Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. Yet the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable. Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Researchers continue to learn more about cancer every day and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base. Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer. • Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk. • Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation® (NBCF) says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician. • Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread. This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. For additional breast cancer screening guidelines, visit the ACS at www.cancer.org. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that a woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister, daughter, or even a male family member, who have had the disease. But breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their family history. Information is a valuable asset in the fight against breast cancer. Learning to decipher between accurate and false information can be especially valuable.

INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

Give Back And Feel Rewarded An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could be caught in a torrent of advice from wellmeaning friends and colleagues this week. But remember, Lamb, you are at your best when you are your own inimitable self. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect strong efforts to get you to accept things as they are and not question them. But ignore all that and continue your inquiries until you’re sure you have all the answers you need. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Heavier than usual family and workplace duties compete for your time this week. Try to strike a balance so that you’re not overwhelmed by either. Pressures ease by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time for the Moon Child to show off your uniquely inspired approach to the culinary skills -especially if they’re directed toward impressing someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might be happy about the re-emergence of a longdeferred deal. But don’t pounce on it quite yet. Time can change things. Be sure the values you looked for before are still there. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to rein in your super-critical attitude, even if things aren’t being done quite as you would prefer. Remember: What you say now could create an awkward situation later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can expect on-the-job cooperation from most of your colleagues this week, some people might insist on knowing more about your plans before they can accept them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating another way to do things is commendable. But you could find some resistance this week from folks who would rather stick with the tried-and-true than try something new. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You usually can keep your aim focused on your goal. But you might need to make adjustments to cope with unsteadiness factors that could arise over the course of the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) News arrives about a projected move. Be prepared to deal with a series of possible shifts, including starting and finishing times, and how much the budget will actually cover. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship needs time to develop. Let things flow naturally. It could be a different story with a workplace situation, which might require faster and more focused attention. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Accept a compliment without trying to troll for any hidden reason beyond what was said. After all, don’t you deserve to be praised every now and then? Of course you do. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to weigh all possibilities before making a decision. You would be a fine judge, or even be a star in a jury room. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn’t be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

Opportunities, Opportunities, Opportunities!

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.

Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
