Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly.

Resolve to read more and reap the benefits It may be tempting to curl up on the couch and turn on the television to unwind, but research indicates that reading is one of the best workouts for the brain. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. People make New Year’s resolutions to improve their lives, and reading more can be a great way to do just that. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www.thehealthy. com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Tis the Season

Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

Gym Etiquette Guide for the New Year By Susan, Anna & Lauren Vernick Etiquette Chics
5
, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year! The holidays are behind us, and 2020 is here. We hope many wonderful memories were made during the “most wonderful time of the year,” but, as we enter the New Year, some new pounds many have snuck up on some of us. We may be looking a bit more jolly than healthy. So once again, some of us determine to get healthy by joining a gym or fitness center. There is a lot of advice on how to stick to your resolutions, and we will leave that to the fitness experts. One thing we know: information and etiquette are power. Here are some gym etiquette tips that will empower you and springboard you toward success! Get to know the gym and rules: Schedule a tour of the facility during non-peak hours. Also, schedule an appointment(s) with a staff member to walk you through the equipment usage, as well as learn the rules and guidelines of the facility. Get class and fitness schedules, as well. Knowing what to expect helps add that comfort level, and that confidence that will help you achieve your goals.
(l-r) Anna, Susan & Lauren Vernick of Etiquette Chics.
you have to wait for the equipment, showers, swimming lanes and more. Patiently do so. Also, give those working out space; no one wants to feel crowded. With that said, do not monopolize certain pieces of equipment while others are waiting. Tis’ the Season... there are going to be masses of people in the facility and parking lot, too. Take a deep breath and do not let that rob your goals or joy.
Cell phones: Unless you are using your phone for a music or fitness app, timing yourself, or are truly “on-call,” put your phone away. Your phone will cause unnecessary distractions for you and others around you. “Techiquette” applies to the gym for certain. Refrain from loud talking, talking too much and sharing personal details. No one wants to hear about that medical procedure your aunt had! As always, no cell phone use in the locker rooms. That is a huge “no-no” and a safety issue. Remember, you are there to get fit and healthy, not to be distracted by those dings and rings.
Celebrate! If you achieved a month of consistent workouts, then reward yourself with a healthy lunch out or movies with a friend where you can practice either mealtime etiquette or movie etiquette. Visit our website for more helpful, empowering information at www.etiquettechics.net. Rewards are an important part of your fitness journey. We hope this helps you stick to your new fitness goals in the New Year and in the process, helps you become a new you! Now, ready, set, go! Please visit us on social media and follow/like us on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram at “Etiquette Chics.” We also love to hear from our readers, please email us with questions or comments at etiquettechics@gmail.com!
Be sanitary and tidy: Be certain to wipe down and sanitize your equipment after use. This is not a scene from Rocky where the grimier, the better. Remember to throw away paper towels and other paper waste. Recycle your water bottle and remember to take yours home if it is the refillable type. If towels are provided, place them in appropriate laundering bins. Also, put equipment away during and after your workout. Practice good manners by being kind to yourself: Give yourself time to adjust to your new goals and new schedule. If you miss a day or two, (or week or so) do not let that discourage you. Get right back at it and realize that each workout is progress. Remember the quote: “Work Out. Eat Well. Be Patient. Repeat.” Remember to mind your manners: Treat the front desk staff and all staff politely and greet them with a “Good morning” or “How are you?” Remember the four foundational words and phrases of etiquette – Please, Thank You, Excuse Me and I’m Sorry – all apply to the gym when appropriate, which, in our book, is often. Be kind and remember that there may be times

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun. Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

I would like to say a most sincere “Thank You” to the very kind lady who was so pleasant and generous to my husband and me at Tom Wahl’s on Monday evening, December 16. Our family has had some pretty difficult situations to deal with in the last few years, and such wonderful consideration from someone we don’t even know reminds us that there are some real “angels” here on Earth. If only there were more people like you who open their heart to others, we would have a much better world. Since we don’t know who you are, we will pay your kindness forward, something that is important to us also. God bless you, Merry Christmas, and a wish for many rewards to come to you in the new year.

What a wonderful seasonal experience the Faith Fellowship Church put on recently. The performances, players, scenery and the message were heartfelt and much appreciated. Well done!
Was shopping at Tops and a family came up and handed us a gift card and said we wanted to do something nice this holiday season. Merry Christmas! A reminder that God is good and so are random people!
Thank you for providing my family and me with free calendars every year. You are a wonderful human being. Driving through all the little towns at Christmas time brings so much joy. They are filled with festive lights, window displays and homes all decorated. Such a joyous time of year! I would like to give a shout out to the morning crew at the Mt. Morris McDonalds. It’s wonderful to be greeted each morning with their smiles and cheerful attitudes. No matter what the weather or how busy they are, they never fail to greet you with a smile or to send off with a “have a good day.” So, thank you for making my morning a little brighter each day.
Page 13
The crossing guards in LeRoy made my kids’ day! They dressed in PJ’s, Santa outfits and hats. These guys made my small town morning. My kids were so excited for the day going in to school after seeing them. I didn’t grow up in a small town and that little thing was really special!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up a bar in Wichita, Kansas, causing extensive damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons, and sold souvenir hatchets to help fund her anti-alcohol activities. * On Dec. 26, 1946, infamous gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens his Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. The grand opening was a flop, however, and the casino lost $300,000 in the first week. The hotel was named after Siegel’s girlfriend, whose nickname was “The Flamingo” because of her red hair and long legs. * On Dec. 25, 1962, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a film based on the novel by Harper Lee, opens in theaters. The Great Depression-era story of racial injustice and the loss of childhood innocence is told from the perspective of a young Alabama girl named Scout Finch.

Five Good Reasons To Eat Less Meat (NAPS)—The next time you’re planning a family meal, a party or just a little snack for yourself, consider this: Reducing your meat consumption can have a multitude of benefits. Why To Avoid Meat Here’s the explanation from Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager of World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit whose mission is to have a world where animals live free of suffering: 1) It helps your health: From reducing cancer rates and heart disease to showing an increased overall lifespan, by consuming more plant-based foods you’ll be helping to improve your own health. 2) It helps fight climate change: Factory farming is one of the leading causes of climate change and deforestation. Simply cutting back on the amount of meat you consume can combat climate change. 3) It helps farmed animals: Of the more than 70 billion animals farmed annually, 50 billion of them spend their lives on factory farms. There, they’re treated more like machines than like living, breathing, feeling creatures. They endure short, miserable lives and are often confined together in cages, crates or pens, which prevent them from engaging in natural behavior. Reducing your meat consumption will make a huge difference to the lives of these animals and free-up resources. 4) It protects wildlife: Grazing land and feed crops now use more than a third of Earth’s entire landmass. This rapid loss of habitat means critical species are disappearing at alarming rates. Many experts warn a mass extinction is on its way. 5) It helps fight hunger: There are nearly a billion starving people on the planet, while it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. By reducing your meat consumption you can help alleviate the waste associated with factory farming. Not eating meat can also help prevent slave labor and sexual abuse. Workers on factory farms are in many cases treated almost as cruelly as the animals. These workers are often subjected to workplace hazards, including life-threatening injuries, respiratory illnesses, PTSD, and exposure to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can help stand up for these exploited workers by reducing your meat consumption and withdrawing financial support from companies profiting from poor labor practices. Change Starts With You To protect your health, your planet, your fellow human beings and animals, it can be a good idea to dramatically reduce your consumption of meat. Fortunately, that need not be a hardship. There are plenty of tasty, nutritious plant-based alternatives and protein sources such as “clean meat.” Learn More For further facts, to pledge to eat less meat and to contribute to the cause, visit www.worldanimalprotection.us/meatreduction. Reducing your consumption of factory-farmed meat can be good for you and the rest of the planet.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Eating Peanut Butter Cured Her Insomnia ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several years ago, I attended a presentation about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars.

colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! -- C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE New York, NY Times Square is in the heart of midtown Manhattan and is a sight to behold any time of year. But the New Year’s celebration in Times Square is a truly unique event that many people insist they must experience at least once in their lifetimes. Each year, roughly one million revelers gather at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, so anyone planning to attend the celebration should aim to get there long before midnight if they want to see the famed ball drop.
