PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

COOKING FOR A HOLIDAY CROWD

Place the tree away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Most people will eat two to three portions each of appetizers or snacks. In fact, appetizers (for a hungry crowd) may be consumed in greater abundance than subsequent courses.

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take steps to prolong the life of their trees.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

(NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

Shingles Vaccine Causes Severe Side Effects

Give Back And Feel Rewarded

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I received the first dose of Shingrix this week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue. The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and ended 18 hours after that. I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented. 1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot? The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both. 2. Are both injections identical? 3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid. Related? 4. If I get shingles, do I have a higher risk for a severe case? -- J.G. ANSWER: Compared with the previous one-time vaccine Zostavax, the new two-dose Shingrix vaccine is much more effective. However, it does have a higher risk of side effects. You have had the most common side effect, though only 10% of people will have symptoms as bad as yours. These symptoms are caused by your body mounting an inflammatory response to the glycoprotein in the vaccine (the new vaccine does not contain a live virus). You clearly have a robust system to fight off infection. To answer your questions in order: You are at higher risk for a similar reaction for the second shot. I would plan your day accordingly, and premedicate with Tylenol (even though it may make the vaccine slightly less effective). The second vaccine is identical to the first. I have read reports that there have been shortages of the vaccine. Chickenpox and shingles can affect you both by the virus attacking you and by an exuberant inflammatory and immune reaction. I would guess that you are at lower risk for viral complications (such as infection of the eye, brain or lungs) but at higher risk for symptoms due to your own system, such as high fever. In many cases, the body’s response to infection can be as damaging as the infection itself. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year I was treated for gout and was

prescribed allopurinol (100 mg) once a day. Approximately five to six months after I started taking it, I became lethargic and was not feeling myself (I am a very young 77 years old) and suddenly lost my sense of taste. I was taken off the medicine and still have little taste sensation other than citrus fruits, apples and spices. I was told that this could last for months, years or forever. Do you have any suggestions for me? I am eating as before, hoping that I will recover my taste. -- N.K. ANSWER: I certainly found that allopurinol can cause loss of taste sensation, but the Food and Drug Administration case reports don’t say how long it can last. Unfortunately, I can’t find any reliable way (or even plausible way) to increase the likelihood of getting your taste sensation back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air.

3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

5 Important Medicare Changes Coming For 2020 (NAPS)—If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, or are considering one, you will have more plan choices with a wider range of benefits to help you better manage your day-to-day health needs during this year’s open enrollment period. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, gives Medicare enrollees a chance to revisit their Medicare insurance coverage, make sure it still fits their needs and make changes for the coming year. Online health insurance broker eHealth outlines five of the most important Medicare changes to be aware of this year: 1. New benefits to help those with chronic illness. Starting in January, 2020, some Medicare Advantage Plans will include benefits for people with chronic illness that will help to support their care. A few examples include nutrition services, transportation to doctor’s appointments and home improvements like shower grips and wheelchair access. More traditional services like dental care, vision care and hearing aids also have been expanded.

* On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. * On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. * On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs.

2. Medicare Advantage premiums will be lower next year. The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans is expected to be $23 in 2020, a decrease of 14% from an average of $26.87 in 2019, and down 28 percent since 2017. The average Medicare Advantage premium this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007. 3. Part D drug plan premiums will be lower, too. The average Medicare prescription drug plan premium for 2020 is $30, a decline of 13.5% as compared with 2019 costs. Savings on out-of-pocket costs may be available as well. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 4. Seeing a doctor without leaving home will get easier. Many seniors will have access to Medicare Advantage telehealth benefits to connect with health care providers online or by phone. For 2020, more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans will offer added telehealth benefits, reaching up to about 1.7 million enrollees. 5. Medigap plan options are changing. Two of the most popular supplemental plans (so-called Medigap plans) used by those enrolled in original Medicare—Plan F and Plan C—will no longer be available to new Medicare members or those born after January 1, 1955. Fortunately, Plan G, another Medigap policy, offers the same level of coverage provided by Plan F—minus the Part B deductible—and will continue to be available after January 2020. The Part B deductible was $185 in 2019. Even if you’re happy with your Medicare coverage, eHealth recommends that you review your current coverage during open enrollment because each year plans can and do make changes in costs, physician networks or drug benefits. Now’s the time to decide which Medicare Advantage plan is best for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course.

,

LVCO Senior Nutrition Program

As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day.

Avon (585) 226-6353 • Dansville (585) 335-8130 WEEK OF DECEMBER 9 - DECEMBER 13, 2019

Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association:

Thursday: Chicken & Gravy, Biscuit, Brussel Sprouts, Carrots, Butterscotch Pudding

• Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t.

• An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf.

• 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers.

• Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time!

2019 Grammy Award Nominee, Victor Wainwright, Rocks Geneseo By Amanda Dudek

O

n the evening of Saturday, November 16th, Victor Wainwright and the Train, a 2019 Grammy nominee, thundered into Geneseo’s Riviera Theater, courtesy of Fanatics Pub/Jim Shelly Promotions. Seats were sold out with standing room only in the beautifully restored theater venue. Opening artist, Owen Eichensehr, with his upbeat, eclectic blend of blues, folk, funk, jam, jazz and rock, was very well received. Next, the Train took the stage, featuring Billy Dean on drums, percussion and vocals, Terrence Grayson on bass and vocals, Pat Harrington on guitar and vocals as well as special guests Mark Earley on the sax and Doug Woolverton on the trumpet. Guests grooved to their scintillating sound as the flowing rhythm of the Train showcased the musicians in turn, each outstanding in his own right. Hailing from Florida, Billy Dean expertly emcees the crowd while driving the band forward in seemingly effortless rhythm. The nine-year Victor Wainwright and the Train veteran, Dean’s dynamic drumming style has topped Billboards and lit up stages across the United States and beyond. Terrence Grayson of Jackson, Mississippi, cut his musical teeth playing songs in church before falling in love with the full, powerful sounds of the bass. Early in his musical career, Grayson fell sway to the groovy, intoxicating blues, eventually incorporating elements of soul, R&B, rock & roll, funk and roots music into his vibe. Guitarist Pat Harrington from our nearby Gasport, New York, is perhaps the newest member of the Train, joining the group in 2016. His exciting guitar leads and improvised riffs promise to add fuel to the Train’s fire as it charges ahead, onward and upward.

That evening, the Train continued to play, preparing the crowd for none other than Victor Wainwright, talented and surprisingly youthful composer, producer, songwriter, vocalist, and awardwinning entertainer and piano player. He has won as slew of prestigious awards, including six Blues Music Awards, such as multiple BMA Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year awards, a BMA Entertainer of the Year Award and a BMA Band of the Year Award. He soared to the Top 10 in the US Billboard Top Blues Album chart in 2013 and in 2016, won the B. B. King Entertainer of the Year Award. This year, Victor Wainwright and the Train became a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Upon his introduction, Victor Wainwright paused at the front of the theater to fist-bump a young audience member before jauntily heading down an aisle to sit at his electric piano under the cool blue lights of the stage. Immediately, his fingers began finding melodies as he welcomed the enthusiastic crowd. He praised the

Train, noting how good they sounded and joking that he “hoped they would let [him] sit in!” Wainwright and the crowd vibed and joked like old friends in what he referred to as, “a new location with a familiar crowd,” before launching into “I’ll Start Tomorrow,” an uproarious, boogie-woogie infused hit from his 2018 album, “Victor Wainwright and the Train.” Wainwright’s hands flew up and down the keyboard, skillfully driving the melody as the likewise talented vocalist sang the song’s story with hilarious facial expression and inflection. He riffed and improvised, never missing a beat or a key, even when he tipped his keyboard sideways to play alongside guitarist Harrington. The song concluded to thunderous applause as did each song throughout the night. Wainwright transitioned effortlessly from upbeat, honky-tonk jams to the rhythmic rolls of brooding blues, slow and glorious, and back again. His hands were lightening, striking, rolling and sliding so quickly yet correctly, one is left wondering how so much talent can exist in one person. Wainwright himself is ever humble, offering as one of his original songs a tribute to B. B. King for whom he once opened at the Peabody Theater. Yet, he seems destined to leave his own mark on the blues music scene as he continues to reinvent and redefine its meaning and its possibilities. For information on upcoming performances by outstanding musical artists, contact Jim Shelly of Fanatics Pub at (585) 624-2080 or visit www.geneseoriviera.com and www.fanaticspub.com.

Thankful for all Caregivers. Being a Caregiver is a very hard, stressful, demanding job whether it be for a family member or in a professional capacity. The physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be very overwhelming. If you know someone who is a Caregiver, consider offering This is directed to the one who ranted about others handling someone’s wheelchair without permission. You said that doing so is considered assault. Does this include someone touching my hearing aids? I have had someone reach out to touch them for one reason or another. Would I be right in calling the police next time someone did this? As I was pulling into a parking space at [local store] in [local town], I saw a dog in a vehicle that clearly was in distress. I sat there for approximately 5 minutes and decided to call 911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to sit with their loved one so they can have a couple hours to themselves. Give them the opportunity to go out to lunch or have coffee with a friend, do some unhurried shopping, pamper themselves at the hairdresser or barbershop or take a relaxing bath. Just let them get away and take some time for themselves. If this is not possible, offer to do the grocery shopping, take items to the dry cleaners, help with the house cleaning, shovel the driveway or whatever would be helpful. Caregivers often feel isolated and lonely. Just being there for the caregiver, who is giving all of themselves to the one they are caring for, is so important.

I was having a bad day and went into the Mexican restaurant, Rancho Viejo on Ellicott St. in Batavia, and a young male waiter spontaneously paid for my meal. As I left the restaurant, we hugged.

Thank you to all the cheerful employees doing any kind of customer service during the holidays. I know from firsthand experience how difficult it can be to stay positive throughout this stressful retail season and service season. Thank you for making everyone’s day a little more jolly!

I would like to thank the Christmas Angel who paid the remaining balance of my layaway at Walmart. It is very much appreciated! Thank you so much for giving my family and myself an amazing Christmas. Bless you and your family this holiday season. I will be paying it forward in the future. Thank you!

Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos!

I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

people genuinely trying to be kind to you. I also have offered assistance to people in wheelchairs and not because, as you put it, I “feel sorry” for them. I try to help anyone who may need assistance. I have offered elderly persons help finding their car in a parking lot, assisted a person shorter than I in reaching a high shelf in a grocery store or even a child struggling to open a door. You see, there are people in this world who just want to be kind. Please don’t assume that, as you put it, you are “an object for pity” or that they are dwelling on the fact you are in a wheelchair. Next time, please just say, “No thank you,” and be grateful that there are still kind people in this world.

HOLIDAY FUN FACTS About half of all Americans say it doesn’t matter how people greet them around the holidays, with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” being non-preferential.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your preholiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope.

(NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. 4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
