Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant.

Geneseo Central School Wins ICE Cup By Maggie Fitzgibbon

D

efending champion Geneseo Central School left the 2020 Interscholastic Competition in English with the coveted ICE Cup.

Seven area school districts met at SUNY Geneseo’s Doty Recital Hall and Welles Hall to vie for the trophy in this year’s Interscholastic Competition in English (ICE). Each district sent three teams of three students, each who individually competed in a different category of English Language Arts skills. The competition is open to students in grades 9-12. The categories were Interpretation of Literature, Dramatic Presentation, and Creative Writing. The scores earned in each category determined individual and team awards. The highest-ranking school takes home the prized ICE Cup. In addition to the ICE Cup, team and individual awards were presented. In team rankings, Geneseo Central School’s White Team took first place, followed by second place Geneseo Devil Team. Third place went to Caledonia-Mumford Fire team, the Geneseo Blue Team placed fourth, fifth place was presented to the Wayland-Cohocton Canada Dry Humor team, and the Avon Mark Twainkie’s Foodies team came in sixth place. Individual awards for the Interpretation of Literature category went to Geneseo’s Jared MacKenzie (first prize), Caledonia-Mumford’s Emma Efing (second), Geneseo’s Isabel Granger (third), Avon’s Henry VanRy (fourth), Geneseo’s Addy Capel (fifth), and Wayland-Cohocton’s Elijah Anderson (sixth). Dramatic Presentation awards went to Geneseo’s Mary Chanler (first), Geneseo’s Max Neiderbach (second), Avon’s Brian Lewis (third), Wayland-Cohocton’s Jennifer Ford (fourth), Dansville’s Sophie Leuzzi (fifth), and Dansville’s Jasmine Helles (sixth).

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

"Let food be thy medicine"

is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer's disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives. LP203730 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Feb. 22, 1732, George Washington is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. As leader of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, his success was due in part to his shrewd use of the “ungentlemanly,” but effective, tactic of guerrilla warfare against British armies used to close-formation battle-line warfare. * On Feb. 19, 1878, the technology that made possible the modern music business comes into existence in a New Jersey laboratory as Thomas Edison creates the first device to both record sound and play it back: the phonograph. * On Feb. 18, 1885, Mark Twain publishes his famous -- and famously controversial -- novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Twain first introduced Huck Finn as the best friend of Tom Sawyer, hero of his novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876).

It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it. ~ John Burroughs, “Winter Sunshine”

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) All that flattery and fawning shouldn’t affect any decision you have to make. Keep your focus on the facts and ignore all the hyperbole, especially if it gets uncomfortably personal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine instincts are on the mark about that “favor” you’re being asked to do. Agree to nothing unless you get a full explanation -- which you would check out first, of course. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A somewhat unsettled recent period should give way to a smoother time going through the week. Use this quieter time to catch up on matters you might have had to let slide. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling a little confused is understandable with all those mixed messages. Take time to list the questions you have. Then present them and insist on answers that make sense. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cupid can be very helpful for Lions seeking a love connection. The chubby cherub also brings warm and fuzzy feelings to paired Leos and Leonas who already share a special love line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Travel is favored this week, whether you’ll be globetrotting or taking a trip to a nearby getaway. You might be surprised (or maybe not) by who wants to be your traveling companion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting advice on your next business-related move is a good idea, but only if your advisers are trustworthy. Get references that you can check out before you make any decisions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Getting a boost in your self-esteem is one benefit that comes with a job well done. There are other plusses as well, including being noticed by all the right people. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make time to deal with family matters, especially where they concern your elderly kinfolk. Being there for them from the start can help resolve problems sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Getting a project started can often be difficult. But the good news is that you won’t want for lack of assistance from colleagues who would like to work with you. So, let them! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A lot of work-related issues might be raised this week, and you need to be prepared for whatever comes along. Things should be easier when it comes to matters in your private life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What might appear to be a much unwanted change in your life right now could turn out to be a very welcome event after all. Give yourself a chance to see where it might take you. BORN THIS WEEK: You exercise your strong leadership qualities well, which is why people believe in you and feel reassured by you. 90-Pound Chemo Patient Should Stop Fasting ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter-in-law has stage 1 breast cancer and has just started her chemotherapy. I am concerned about her decision to fast for two days before and one day after each treatment. She weighs only 90 pounds, and fasting while you are trying to fight cancer does not sound like a good idea. What is your opinion of fasting during chemotherapy? -- K.B. ANSWER: In theory, fasting may make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and there have been studies in mice suggesting this approach might have value. However, during chemotherapy, the whole body needs good-quality nutrition, and I could not recommend fasting for someone who weighs so little, nor could I recommend two full days of fasting before chemotherapy. Until there is clear evidence that intermittent fasting is of benefit, I don’t recommend it. Your daughter-in-law, in particular, is not a good candidate, being so very thin (assuming she is of near-normal height). ***

you knew anything about the effect of Advil on men with enlarged prostates. It seemed that ibuprofen decreased his trips to the bathroom. I have found the same thing myself. Taking two Advil allows me to wait five to six hours before having to urinate. Has there been more research on why this happens? -- S.Z. ANSWER: There is some more information. Men with symptoms of enlarged prostate often have increased urinary frequency, combined with incomplete emptying. This makes sense; if you can’t empty your entire bladder, you will have to empty it more frequently. So it seems the ibuprofen is letting you empty the bladder more completely. There are two major reasons for incomplete emptying, and different theories for why ibuprofen might work on each. Benign (not cancerous) enlargement of the prostate is one reason. In this case, it is hypothesized that ibuprofen stops the growth of cells in the prostate, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. Reducing the size of the prostate can allow better, more complete urine flow. The other common cause of the prostate symptoms is inflammation of the prostate. In this case, ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reducing symptoms is easier to understand. The fact that it works so quickly for you suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is more important in your case. Ibuprofen does have possible side effects, but two ibuprofen once a day is unlikely to cause significant problems. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My teen likes vegetables and eats right. He also drinks a lot of water, works out and doesn’t like soda. He and my sister have chronic constipation. They both now take a magnesium supplement and feel great. Is that OK? -- T.M.S. ANSWER: Magnesium is a common and safe treatment for constipation. A healthy diet, exercise and drinking plenty of water are good ideas for anyone with constipation, but some people do need additional help. I have previously mentioned prunes (or prune juice) as an option, but magnesium, if taken at a dose to ensure regular but not excessive bowel movements, is a fine treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder. Hi Everyone. I’m Smokin’ Joe. I’m a 20-yearold, 1500 lb. half Percheron/half Friesian draft horse. I live in my Mom’s back yard in a nice barn and paddock with my brother from another mother, Mr. G. I spend a lot of my time thinking about my next meal—sometimes while I’m eating the one that’s right in front of me! I also hang out with my bro, cavorting, daydreaming and taking the occasional standing power nap. Mr. G and I both think we have the good life because our Mom sometimes gives us treats for NO REASON! On February 1st my husband fell trying to get up our front steps. My cousin and I were unable to get him up on his feet. A car pulled in our driveway and a young couple hurried over to help us. Wow! Seems to me that you should look for another type of job! Seriously! I’m 66 years young, and at times, I do assist the cashier in loading my grocery bags into my cart. This is optional. I am a caring person who has worked in retail as a cashier, etc., but in no way is it something that should be demanded. Next, would you like for your customers to ring up their own orders (that’s what self-check outs are for) and bag their own groceries while on your line? After spending money for groceries, the least we, as customers, can expect is to have a cashier bag them and put them in our cart! You’re getting paid to do that; I’m not! I don’t want to go to your line, that’s for sure. Wish I knew where you worked! Get another job. I live in a small town, and GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A big thank you to a good citizen who noticed something and said something, and to the RG&E response team for averting a potential tragedy in my neighborhood. On January 29th, an early morning jogger smelled natural gas on Wheatstone Circle in Fairport. Fortunately, he took the time from his run to report this to authorities. By 7:00 a.m., Rochester Gas and Electric responded and determined that there was, indeed, a leak in the gas line in my front yard. The RG&E team went to work immediately. They spent most of the nasty winter day locating the faulty gas line and replacing it. It unnerves me to think what might have happened. Instead, our neighborhood

close to me, there is a dog that is put out every day early in the mornings before light and during day hours too, barking constantly at nothing. I believe it has anxiety issues or its owners don’t take the time to train it. I like dogs; they are all around me, but this one is the only one that barks nonstop. Have some respect for your neighbors who have children who go to school and some people who work late night hours. For the respect of your neighbors, take the time to train your dog! Enough is enough. People with constantly barking dogs can get a fine of up to 250 bucks. I’ve done my research! If you’re home all day and leave that dog out to bark, then you have time to train it!

blame on the daughter-in-law and not the son she raised. Why is she not having this conversation with her son? He is the one who should be making these choices and insisting on including his parents in family events. Maybe it’s time for him to put on his big boy pants and act like a considerate adult. What does it say about the way he was raised if he does not have consideration for his parents? This is not a one-way street. If you want this to change, then your son is the one you should be speaking to.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS

MEDICAL SECRETARY

Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.

DID YOU KNOW? Numerous studies have found that vacationing produces a host of health benefits. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took.

LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

(NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers. Small Businesses, Big Benefits Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:

Full Time - Evening and Night Shifts Part-Time & Per Diem - Various Shifts, W/E

NURSING ASSISTANT

Full Time - Day, Evening & Night Shifts Part-Time & Per Diem - Various Shifts, W/E

• Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it

PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT Part Time - Day and Evening Shift.

• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future

PART-TIME TELEPHONE OPERATOR FULL-TIME SCHEDULER

• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded.

Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon). Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants. Employee Incentives Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work.

MT. MORRIS, N.Y.

Additional Findings • When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing.

“Be a part of the CNR family. We’re achieving quality together!”

• 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. Learn more about gift cards at www.firstdata. com/giftcards.
