Dental care for the entire family. From children to the elderly.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month Give your child the gift of a healthy, beautiful smile with proper dental care beginning from the time his or her first tooth appears. We offer a full range of gentle professional dental care services for kids to promote proper dental care at home and protect their precious smiles for life. Great smiles start here!

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments, including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence.” Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? -- J.D.W. ANSWER: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness” may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope”) or true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but have their own side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation by a specially trained physical or occupational therapist may have some benefit if surgery isn’t contemplated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortunately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication -- an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your natural Arian leadership qualities make you the person others will follow in tackling that important project. But don’t get so involved in the work that you neglect your personal life. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The issues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experience so that you don’t repeat it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Creating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefit both from a change of scenery and from meeting new people. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could finally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Letting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a difficult period sooner rather than later. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncanny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

Once again during a major windstorm, with winds gusting to near 50mph or above, about half the streetlights in town went out. It’s also clear that people need to learn the rules of driving! Please don’t just slow down or assume because you’re not on the side street that you have the right of way. Just stop, look, respect other drivers and go on your way again. Did you not know that you would be expected to bag groceries, and put people’s groceries in the carts when you took the job? If you feel it is such hard work to put groceries in a cart, then you need to go the doctor to get a physical. Don’t try and make the customers who go through your line feel guilty because of part of your job! We all have jobs! Maybe you should get a job where you can sit down, like the toll booth workers.

Thank you so much Avon Lioness Club for your donation to the Avon Hometown Hero Banner program! Because of your generosity we will be able to replace some of the worn banners. We are a volunteer committee trying to hang the flags with limited funds. It is sometimes challenging to keep track of who is active and if a flag should fly, but we try our best. Thanks also for the warm support from the parents who have a son or daughter’s flag hanging. It is a very personal program for us parent volunteers to keep it going. Banner applications can be picked up at the Village and Town offices. Avon Hometown Hero Banner Committee

Anyone who is thinking about home improvements, do your homework first. Check with the BBB, get lots of references, but most importantly get a contract that specifies the amount for each part of the job if it has for example roofing and or fascia and soffit work. We were scammed by a contractor who gave us one price for work with different areas of our house. After he finished one part and was unable to do the rest because of winter coming on, we paid him all but a small portion of the cost. The next year, he wanted three and a half times more for the work than we had verbally agreed to. We tried unsuccessfully in small claims court to get justice because we had no written proof. We learned our lesson.

On Feb. 9, 1960, Adolph Coors disappears while driving to work from his Morrison, Colorado, home. Cracking The Code To Society’s Most Feared Disease (NAPS)-Even more than cancer, there’s one disease most people fear. The thought of falling prey to Alzheimer’s disease and to the inevitable desecration of the mind is something that can make even the bravest shudder. After all, if you’re robbed of your sense of who you really are, you’re doomed to live your last days without the dignity that defines you and that you hold dear. Perhaps the ultimate horror of Alzheimer’s disease is that it is as indiscriminate, merciless, and devastating as a wind-swept wildfire. As a result, a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease has become a Holy Grail of sorts in the biotech industry. The disease is so ubiquitous, it casts a shadow over just about everyone’s family. At the same time, it exacts a devastating financial toll on society “perhaps even greater than cancer” with Alzheimer’s disease patients needing 24-hour care for an average of eight years and sometimes as many as 20 years. The estimated cost for caring for Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is well in excess of a quarter of a trillion dollars per annum. This doesn’t even include unpaid caregiving. Also, Alzheimer’s disease is ranked as the third leading cause of death of seniors in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer. Approximately 6 million Americans have become its victims, and this number rises each year as lifespans increase due to advancements in medical science. Progress From Pharmaceuticals - Fortunately, a few pharmaceutical companies, including Biogen, AC Immune SA and NervGen Pharma, have come up with ways to potentially treat the condition and perhaps slow it down. NervGen’s medical researchers are working on what may become an important breakthrough for Alzheimer’s and other afflictions that are defined by nerve damage. Could This Be Modern Medicine’s Holy Grail? Until recently, NervGen’s focus has mostly been on developing nerve regeneration for the treatment of spinal cord injuries. In fact, some remarkable results have been achieved in preclinical trials, including one where the treated rodents regained substantial functionality in their legs after sustaining severe spinal cord damage. Assuming it also works in humans, the medical science world will be paying very close attention because there are no known therapies that can stimulate human nerve regeneration now. In addition, NervGen intends to commence a Phase 2 clinical trial for treating multiple sclerosis. The company’s drug candidate is expected to treat many of such debilitating symptoms as numbness, loss of sensation, chronic and debilitating pain, partial loss of movement, paralysis, and even incontinence due to additional mechanisms of action called “remyelination” and “plasticity.” The research team also believes that the same nerve-rejuvenating biotechnology can be adapted to treat Alzheimer’s disease, not just mitigate its symptoms due to its truly novel and innovate approach. The essence of this technology is that it unlocks a damaged nervous system’s natural ability to repair itself. Proprietary molecules “unstick” nerves and prevent new ones from getting stuck by interfering with synaptic-like connections so the nerves can regrow in places that are normally highly inhibited by scar tissue. Heretofore, no drugs have been approved anywhere in the world for nerve regeneration and remyelination, as well as improved plasticity in damaged nerves. Additionally, existing treatments are not considered very effective. So, the stakes are especially high for NervGen to create a blockbuster drug candidate that promises to even outshine any other Alzheimer’s disease drug. This is a wonderful opportunity to pioneer nerve repairing drug therapies that target some of the most devastating and pervasive diseases known to humankind. Did You Know? Cardiac arrest, is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Though often mistaken as the same thing as a heart attack, cardiac arrest is not the same. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest and even lead to death, but the cause of heart attack and cardiac arrest are different.

• Zoning Board of Appeals • Planning Board • Ambulance Commissioner • Board of Assessment Review All interested applicants should mail their letter of interest to the Cohocton Town Clerk P.O. Box 200, Atlanta NY 14808. DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

Giving the Gift of Joyful Birthdays B Y

A M A N DA

emember being five years old, counting down the days until your birthday? Imagine if when your big day finally arrived, there were no party decorations, streamers, balloons and no cake. Joy Spangenberg started Joyful Birthdays to help ensure that every child’s birthday is filled with the wonder of these things and more. 2017 was a difficult year for Joy. “I was extremely ill and spent several months in and out of Noyes and Highland Hospitals respectively, including a week on a ventilator in the ICU,” she recalled. A single mom of twin boys, then five years old, she found herself disabled after having worked for over 20 years. At home recuperating, Joy found herself with a lot of time to think. “I hadn’t really been contributing to the world in the way I had in the past, and I needed a sense of purpose,” she explained. “I have always enjoyed cooking and baking, having worked for several years in restaurants. Also, one of my very favorite things to do was to plan a birthday party for each of my children.” It was birthday parties that were to become her passion. “Growing up, I didn’t have birthday parties,” she confided. “Most times, I didn’t even have a simple cake. Because of this, I really loved giving parties for my boys, my nieces and my nephews. I also always saved leftover party decorations because I thought they could be put to good use.” On December 12, 2017, Joy started Joyful Birthdays.

“I never want a child to feel sad because they don’t get a cake or Joyful Birthdays founder, anything special for their birthday,” Joy Spangenberg she said. “Every child deserves to feel special on their birthday. Joyful Birthdays not only provides a specialized cake, but also themed party decorations, tableware and more. When possible, I also provide goody bags for all the child’s guests and a gift for the child.” The idea quickly caught on. “My very first Joyful Birthdays cake was for a teen and was shaped like a very large Xbox controller,” she said. “I have now done benefits and birthdays for approximately 60 children and people in Hospice care.” News of Joyful Birthdays spread Every child deserves through word-ofto feel special on their mouth and rippled through social media. birthday! Soon, she was helping families in need in Livingston, Allegany and Steuben Counties. “Anyone in need is welcome to come to me,” she insisted. “I only ask that they pick up the items. I simply enjoy knowing that a child has created special memories of his or her special day because of my contribution.”

These items have expanded beyond cake. “When I talk to each family, I find that they need more than cake,” shared Joy. “I’ve given families in need items like food, clothing, new coats, filled Easter baskets or filled stockings, gift cards, even used tires once!”

Joyful Birthdays magical unicorn cake!

Unfortunately, there have been those who have tried to take advantage of her generosity. “I have been scammed many times in the past,” she said matter-of-factly. “This service is only for those who truly need it, not to have someone else do the work and gain free items. I have had a few people ask for services, confirm they were picking up and never show. In those cases, the volunteer fire department gets the cake or cupcakes, not that they mind!” Nevertheless, she plans to continue. “One little girl came with her grandma to pick up all the items,” she recalled fondly. “She brought me a handmade thank you card and a little purse she had made herself.” It is moments like these that fuel Joy’s passion. In fact, the future of Joyful Birthdays looks bigger and brighter than ever. “Joyful Birthdays has been attempting to expand!” she said. “It just needs a donated space. I started clearance shopping for party items, and it has evolved to school supplies, clothing, shoes, underclothing and more. I am attempting to launch a free Clothing/School Supply/Hygiene Supply Closet called A Joyful Hope.” So far, most of the help Joyful Birthdays gives to families in need has come from Joy’s own pocket. “I seem to be the one people come to when someone is in need, and thankfully, I have been able to fulfill those needs with the help of generous friends,” she said. “Donations are always gratefully accepted, especially things like piping bags for cake decorating, gel food coloring and items for goody bags, as well as new toys for gifts.”

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive. EMPLOYMENT

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR

EOE

When leaving a job, it is important that professionals exhibit a certain measure of grace and etiquette. Leaving a job with dignity and mutual respect can benefit professionals in the short- and long-term.

According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.

Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress. Page 37
