PREVENT DIY INJURIES

ajdavis29588@gmail.com

Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals -even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence -- plus your loyal supporters -- should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

Livonia Wrestler Landon Feil and Teammate Move on to State By Amanda Dudek

W

hen nine-year-old Landon Feil took 3rd place in the Western Regionals Qualifier for the New York State Championships on Sunday, March 1st, he was following in his father’s footsteps. Matthew Feil, Landon’s father and wrestling coach had also wrestled in high school and couldn’t be more proud of his son. In two weeks, he will head up to SUNY Brockport to compete at the state level. Landon started wrestling with the Livonia Youth Wrestling Program at the age of five, taking to the sport immediately. In fact, this year will be his fourth year in a row competing in the New York State Championships; he also competed at the ages of 6, 7 and 8. In 2018, he placed 4th in all of New York State. “He absolutely loves it, and he works very hard,” said dad, Matt Feil. “We practice three to four nights a week with tournaments every weekend from December 1st through the middle of March.” Landon finished the Regional Qualifier with a record of 4-1 in a bracket of ten, and his record for the year is a very respectable 31-15. Brackets are divided by age and weight, and Landon, age 9, is in the 66-pound bracket. “They only wrestle kids their same age and weight brackets,” explained Feil. “This keeps it fair across the board.”

Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling competitor, Myles Jarzyna (far right), took 4th place at the Western Regionals in his bracket with a record of 2-2!

“Our club is Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling, and we are town affiliated although we practice at the school,” shared Feil. “This year, we hosted our first annual youth tournament which turned out great.” Feil explained that this tournament also functioned as a fundraiser to help the children get shorts, t-shirts, singlets and other gear in the future. “We are self-funded, so that helped a lot.” Landon plans to continue in youth wrestling through the age of 12 at which point he could move on to modified or varsity, which Matthew Feil believes he will jump into given his success so far. “He is a captain on our team now, and I’m sure he will carry that title at the varsity level,” said Feil. Landon also has a younger brother, Owen, who is 6 years old and has been on the team for 2 years now and who has shown great promise. Later on in March, Landon will be joined at States by his teammate, 11-year-old Myles Jarzyna, who placed 4th in his bracket with a record of 2-2 at the Regional tournament.

Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling Captain, Landon Feil (2nd from right), took 3rd place at the Western Regionals in his bracket with a record of 4-1!

Described by Matthew Feil as “a wrestler with the heart of a lion,” Myles began wrestling only two years ago and already has earned himself his first visit to the State Championships. The New York State Championships are a one to two-day event with brackets. These are double elimination brackets, and children come from all over New York State, from as far away as Long Island and Pulaski to the Pennsylvania and Vermont borders. “The top four in each age and weight bracket in each region are invited to participate,” shared Feil. “We fill up the SERC building in Brockport with about 5,000 people in the stands. It is a full day of wrestling and an exciting event.” Matthew Feil highly recommends wrestling for interested youth. “It does require a lot of time and travel, but creates a good foundation for kids growing up,” he said. “It teaches them things like facing adversity, leadership skills, discipline and hard work. It is great for physical fitness and encourages children to realize that they get out of it what they put into it.” Enjoy this article? Puzzle Answers This Week

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

THE PEN

Follow these five steps every time. • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Read the science behind the recommendations.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired. 3/4 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 10 10

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Have a good emotional connection. A desire to have a great body may not be enough to motivate you to workout and push harder. If not, think of a better reason to exercise, and it may be the mind over matter you need. Many people find inspiration from family health history risk factors or through the goal of reversing negative health reports from doctors’ offices. These motivating factors will help you press on and push harder.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

New Option to Treat Enlarged Prostate ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year old male who is healthy with a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary. I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow. In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary. I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Simple question: Why can’t I hear well when I

am having a big yawn? Is this normal? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: This is normal; in fact, it’s a universal finding with a yawn that hearing decreases (but doesn’t go away entirely). This is because the Eustachian tube closes, and there is a pressure difference inside versus the outside of the eardrum, reducing the ability of the ear to transmit sound. Interestingly, after a big yawn, hearing may be improved; when the Eustachian tube reopens after the jaw position changes, it can equalize the pressure and improve sound transmission. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. St. Patrick’s Day Tradition! What started as a way to get to the bottom of Chicago’s pollution problem, the pouring of a special green dye into the river allowed authorities to see exactly where waste dumping was occurring. This prompted the idea to make it an annual event, turning the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. That dye is now an eco-friendly vegetablebased dye. You have to be quick to view because it lasts just 5 hours!

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

After he left, a man behind me said, “See? There are good people in this world.” Thank you again, Cole! of waiting in line for the automatic knowing how long the lines would probably be, I opted to do a quick manual wash. I pulled around into line; all three bays had a person but no one in line waiting. I hung back to go into next available spot. I realized the person ahead of me was taking longer because he was teaching his daughter how to wash and use the wand. I finally got to pull in, and right before he left, he deposited more quarters! How generous and thoughtful! I didn’t mind waiting, but that made my day!

They don’t follow the rules. He has a lot to learn about driving if he lives to see his 60’s. His passenger never said a word. I was already dealing with my eldest yelling and screaming at me. I’m hoping this spring I’ll never have to see that traffic circle again.

I had an accident in February. The driver was a teenage driver; all he did was yell and scream and threaten me. In my 40+ years of driving, this is the first time this has happened. I was taught in driver education to remain

To the person who Said “Yeah, we know you have the right of way:” Do you really? I don’t think so. I think that you have the idea that no matter the circumstances, you have the right of way. Sorry, wrong! In the

instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

On Friday, February 28th, I was at the Crosby’s gas station in Brockport. I was trying to purchase a gas gift card for my grandson. When I was told that they do not accept Credit Cards or Checks, I was extremely upset because I didn’t have enough cash and I had traveled a distance to get the card. I wasn’t sure what

round hay bale, much enjoyed! I called local jewelers because a stone in my ring was loose. Lambert Jewelers gave the lowest quote. I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

www.olasjobs.org School Nurse Substitutes rate $21.10/hour. THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

MAINTENANCE/ CDL DRIVER Kuhnle Bros. Trucking is looking for an individual to do light mechanical/maintenance and drive occasionally on local runs. This job is hourly plus o.t. You naturally will have to make concessions that impact finances, particularly as it pertains to spending. Cut back on non-necessities like dining out, gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and other luxuries. Avoid adding other new debt.
