TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
CURTAINS: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the w inter. This might be more visible near the end of w inter w hen more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open w indow s for the season so any w ind that blow s in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been w ashed, opening w indow s may help them dry more quickly.
Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a w inter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s w orth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeow ners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A pesky health problem should clear up soon. Meanwhile, travel -- both for personal as well as for business reasons -- is strong in the Aries aspect this week, and well into the next. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Look for Bovines to be on the move this week, whether it’s traveling for fun or for business. Other “moves” include workplace adjustments and, for some, relationship changes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Geminis who have just gone through a hectic period involving job and/or family matters might want to take some well-earned time out to relax and restore those drained energy levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A romantic situation seems to have stalled, just when the Moon Child was expecting it to go forward. Could that be a bad case of miscommunication going on. Talk it over openly and honestly. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Showing a genuine interest in something that’s important to a friend, family member or colleague could open a communication line that had been pretty much shut down for a while. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making a potentially life-changing decision takes as much knowledge as you can gather, plus determination and patience. Take your time working it out. Don’t let anyone rush you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should be back on schedule and heading in the right direction after clearing up a misunderstanding. But there could still be some setbacks. If so, correct them immediately. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A business matter keeps you pretty busy, but try to squeeze in time to be with family as well as close friends. You need the good vibrations you get from people who care for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Investing in an attractive prospect (business or personal) with little or no information can be risky. Avoid future problems by getting all the facts before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close to you might have an unexpected reaction to a decision you feel you’re prepared to make. Listen to his or her point of view. It could prove to be surprisingly helpful. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t give up yet. That once warm, personal relationship that seems to be cooling off fast could recover with some tender, loving care, and who better than you to provide it? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Career matters are strong this week. You might want to enter a training program to enhance your skills. Also, consider getting professional help in preparing a brilliant resume. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of respecting the feelings of others, which is one reason people feel comfortable having you in their lives. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

CROSSWORD TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does Ulcerative Colitis Preclude Pregnancy? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I need some hope. My 24-year-old

granddaughter, recently married, came down with ulcerative colitis. Right now, she is getting two Humira injections a month. She has lost so much weight and her diet is so limited. Do things normally get better? Will she ever be able to become pregnant? It has been about four months. She is presently seeing a GI doctor. Should she be under the care of a specialist? -- L.M.O.S. ANSWER: Ulcerative colitis is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases. The underlying cause is not known, but there is a familial predisposition. Women are more often diagnosed, and the leading time of diagnosis is in the 20s. There is a wide range of severity, with some people doing well with topical treatments (suppositories or enemas), some needing oral medication, and people with more severe disease needing much more powerful agents, such as the adalimumab (Humira) your granddaughter needs. Fortunately, those kinds of drugs have approximately a 60% to 70% success rate. Diet is important for people with UC of any severity; however, as the disease becomes better controlled it is likely that she will have a less restricted diet. A GI doctor is a gastroenterologist, the specialist for inflammatory bowel diseases. There are some gastroenterologists who specialize even further, making IBD their area of particular expertise. Pregnancy is certainly possible in women with IBD. However, they should be in remission before attempting pregnancy, and her medications may need to be adjusted for maximum safety. There are many places to get additional information, but I recommend the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation website as an excellent starting point. It can be found at www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor, and even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. BRING MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO A HOME Assess the situation before renovating. Walk around the house and determine which rooms get the most light and which conditions may be contributing to the problem in other areas. Dark floors and walls may be absorbing natural light and compounding the situation. You may find that only one or two rooms need attention, saving you the cost and effort associated with a major home overhaul. Page 16

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Shawn Dunwoody: Mount Morris Mural to Legion of Legends BY AMANDA DUDEK
C
reativity flows around Shawn Dunwoody like a living aura. The self-described director, producer, designer, maker, influencer, developer, and artist leads Dunwoode Visual Consulting and a group called the Fruitbelt Project. He also collaborates with communities to create local murals and creates the Rochester-inspired comic book series, Legion of Legends. “The creative process is how I approach things,” shared Dunwoody. “It surrounds us in every breath. Art is a way to connect with individuals and surrounds us in every way, shape and form.” Dunwoody added that everyday items like street signs and even the very way a town is planned is an extension of that creative community. “It is a way to connect with communities and families to shape the future,” he added. Dunwoody recently completed the colorful mural on the corner of Main and Chapel Streets in Mount Morris which embodies the vibrant complexity of the town’s history and culture. “I first sat down with the lead team of folks in the community,” shared Dunwoody. “I couldn’t have community participation due to space and level of detail, but people could share ideas with me.” Dunwoody explained that while he had a preliminary concept, the mural grew and developed along the way. He recalls being impressed by the town’s leap of faith. “It was trust,” he said. “When I presented my project, it wasn’t a finished piece. To have someone trust me to do this without absolutely knowing the outcome was incredible.” “Women’s rights and the Haudenosaunee, photos people showed me, the town’s Puerto Rican population and the Coqui... all these were stories and connection points,” he recalled. “I was learning and figuring out what would go where.” The result is a stunning” Not everyone embraced the project at first, but as Dunwoody welcomed and incorporated input during his project, many came to believe this mural would be beneficial. These feelings were further strengthened when residents were invited to add their signatures to the mural, recording the voices which had shaped it and made it a part of their community. This aspect of art-helping people find their point of engagement and connection– particularly interests Dunwoody. “I think that is what it is really all about,” he explained. “Feeling that one point of connection with a creative moment. That is why I engage the community as much as possible.” Speaking of community connections, Dunwoody has also launched a new twist on superheroes, his Legion of Legends. This groundbreaking comic book series centers around the well-known historical figures and landmarks of Rochester. These include such people as Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and George Eastman while making reference to iconic buildings in Downtown Rochester, Genny and K3G, the Red Wings’ based Red and the Amerks’ inspired Moose, the Royals, even garbage plates combined with plate tectonics!
“Everyone has been a superhero at some point,” observed Dunwoody. “We can address issues like nuclear weapons and racial divide if it is put in the context of the superhero world. It can become tangible and accessible. I am working with a writer to address current issues like human trafficking but in the context of slavery combined with someone who can fly.” Dunwoody has visited schools to share his work, and students have taken an interest. “They want to know how my characters got Shawn Dunwoody with cutout of Legion of Legends character, Frederick Douglass, during his visit to their powers. For example, Susan B. Byron-Bergen Central School, Photo Gretchen Spittler Anthony has superwoman strength and impenetrable skin. Students drew their own superheroes as well, which was cool to see.” Dunwoody wants to be an example for students. “I want to be what I wanted to see when I was little,” he clarified. “When I was a kid, I wanted to see that it was possible to do what I am doing now. For kids who want to be in a creative field, those role models typically aren’t coming to their school. I want to let young folks know that there are creative career paths that can be attained. Hold tight and don’t be afraid to dream!” Dunwoody insists each person has creativity and is uniquely valuable. “You write your name, don’t you? That’s a drawing!” he exclaimed. “You dressed yourself this morning? You’re a fashion designer! Even each walk is individual unto itself and has its own beat.” “To deprive the universe of your smile or your being is to rob the universe of the once-in-a-lifetime piece of artwork that will never exist again,” he continued with conviction. “You will only exist once in the universe, so be a unique, creative force for change and be beautiful. Be that one moment in time that will never be seen again!” Dunwoody is currently planning projects in Avon, Livonia and a second project in Mount Morris. All of these will be community projects where everyone is welcome to join. Love this story? Check out this weeks other stories at gvpennysaver.com: •

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

How to practice social distancing during a pandemic
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel --* On March 22, 1765, in an effort to raise funds to pay off debts, the British government passes the Stamp Act. It levied a direct tax on all materials printed for commercial and legal use in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and dice. * On March 21, 1804, the Napoleonic Code is approved in France. The Code strengthened the authority of men over their families, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens also were granted equal rights under the law, but colonial slavery was reintroduced. * On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” is published. The novel was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.”
Social distancing protocols encourage people to avoid crowds, such as those at concerts and sporting events. As COVID-19 continued to spread across the world, it quickly became evident that the public would have to take drastic measures to slow the transmission. In addition to practicing generalized sanitation and good hygiene, people in some of the hardest-hit clusters were advised to take additional, more aggressive measures. Quarantines and travel restrictions were implemented, and the term "social distancing" became a buzzword. Social distancing involves people keeping a physical distance from each other during disease outbreaks in order to slow transmission rates. Social distancing also is employed to lessen the impact of the disease on the medical care system, which quickly can become overwhelmed with a high number of cases presenting in a short period of time. In best-case scenarios, social distancing also may enable a few people to avoid infection until a vaccine is available. So how can people socially distance themselves? Here are some of the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other leading health groups. · Opt out of group events. Steer clear of events, whether meetings, sports games, conferences, and other gatherings where large amounts of people congregate together. · Stick to non-contact greetings. Avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes. Substitute a smile, a wave or a bumping of elbows, instead. · Work from home. Many companies are now equipped to allow employees to work from home all the time or a portion of the time. Businesses can encourage employees to stay home and utilize the internet to get their work done. · Alter shopping schedules. Try to visit stores in the early morning or late at night when they are less likely to be crowded. · Make changes in worship practices. Celebrants may have to make modifications to the way they worship. The Catholic Diocese of Trenton, NJ, recently advised all diocesan churches to halt the distribution of the most precious blood (wine) from communal chalices; encouraged clergy and eucharistic ministers to sanitize their hands before
distributing the eucharist; and parishioners to avoid contact during the sign of peace. Common sense is key to stall disease transmission, and social distancing can be an important public health measure. TF204940 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 2020
Hello everyone… This is C.J. FitzPatrick. I usually don’t involve my personal feelings or beliefs in business, as I don’t want to make anyone upset who disagrees with me, but right now I think we’’re all on the same page. As a community, I know a lot of us are concerned about how we are supposed to make a living, especially small business. Well, small business has been my and Shane’s entire life. Aside from the military, it’s all we’ve ever known. I see a lot of people being forced to close their doors, and although we certainly understand the reasons, we are also saddened by the uncertainty of small business owners’ ability to pay their mortgages or feed their families. Since day one, Shane and I have had the same dream, the same goal: to bring the community together - bring neighbors and friends together. Well, I’m looking at this as a great opportunity to put my money where my mouth is. If your small business has been shut down, come see us. We will do everything we can to help you and your profits. We aren’t a huge business, but we will certainly do everything we can to help other small businesses. If you need a place to display and sell your products, let’s talk! If you need supplies for your business, let’s talk! If you need something, and we can do it for you, WE WILL! This situation is bad for us all, but we care about this community and we care about ALL small businesses. Like I said, we have lived small business our whole lives. It means everything to us, and we know it does to other small business owners too. We are able to remain open during this difficult time, and if somehow that can help your small business, please come see us!

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… Wayland Free Library is closed effective immediately. The decision to close is only one part of the broader public health attempt to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The Board of Library Trustees will work with Library and Town staff to determine what, if any services, may continue to be available, such as electronic and digital resources, ordering and picking up books. We urge ALL residents to evaluate their own health and determine if they are feeling mildly ill with a head cold, headache, cough and/or experiencing any CDC identified symptoms of COVID-19. If you are feeling any symptoms, we advise you to contact the Wayland Health Department at the Coronavirus Hotline 508-358-6805 and your primary care physician for guidance. A delightful surprise on March 5, 2020 at Cracker Barrel, Henrietta when my lunch bill was paid by someone unknown to me. Thursday the 12th, we had a service call with Spectrum because of difficulties we were experiencing. I was very hesitant because it was quite bothersome not having internet and phone service. I didn’t know what to expect. We were at our wit’s end. Well, I was very pleased with the TQA representative they sent to our home. Ryan was right on spot, courteous, and did indeed find the problems. He rectified them, explained what was going on, and I am very pleased and satisfied. He renewed my faith in Spectrum. Thank you very much for your help, Ryan.

This is for the people who have a pet cat that they don’t want anymore and decide to drop it off on my property to let it roam because I have a lot of barns. In the past, I know one cat was taken to the hospital for mental health issues, one was taken to jail for trespassing, and two were eaten by coyotes. I’m not sure about the others. Now if you can’t afford to put an ad in the newspaper to give your pet a new home for free or if you can’t take it to the Humane Society or Lollypop Farm, then knock on my door, tell me the cat's name and drop off some food once a month.
I am an elderly person with many underlying medical conditions. I was in [local store] last week in [local town] getting my final medications before I socially distanced to protect myself. I was wearing my mask to protect me, and two young men

My husband and I were excited to check out a new restaurant in Canandaigua: Gleason’s. The bar beer selection was great and our bartender Jessica made our experience outstanding. Not only was she funny, she had a ton of great information about the area. Jessica is just an allaround angel! We’ll be back, Jessica; you rock. Signed, A Happy Customer

How to Succeed at
Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help
“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Keep juicy details up top Format the résumé so the most pertinent information is within the top onethird of the document. Beef up a summary statement and use it in lieu of an objective. Make sure that summary includes keywords that promote your skills and experience to potentially lure the recruiter into reading more.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
