I’m a hedgehog, but my parents call me Prickle Tickle. I will be 4 years old on February 27th. I love to hide in blankets and run around. My favorite season is Summer so I can run around in the grass and explore mom’s gardens (supervised of course). I love to eat boiled chicken and eggs. My mom grinds up my regular food because I’ve lost all of my teeth. She’s so nice! I’m ready to run around outdoors once it warms up.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
Butler
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME
REMODELING
Asphalt shingles: The most popular roofing material, asphalt shingles are guaranteed for 20 to 30 years, which helps solidify this choice as a smart-value product. For some homeowners, a downside to shingles is that, because they are so popular, they’re seen everywhere. So those homeowners looking to make a unique statement with their roofing materials may want to choose a different option.

Compacted soil can result from any number of activities, including walking on a lawn. When soil on a lawn is compacted, grass roots might not receive the water, oxygen and nutrients they need to grow in strong. The can lead to weak lawns that are vulnerable to various issues. SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.
Your Car Care Specialist is here for you during this national emergency. Call us for all your automotive repairs.
If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers.
DANSVILLE
Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways. A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

On Monday, the 9th of March, my family and I went to Krony’s. We always enjoy the delicious pizza and what I call calzones. Of course, what would Krony’s be without Joey. He simply is the best manager I have ever seen in a restaurant. Joey is just a great all-around person. He goes out of his way to make sure that everything is great. He is always so personable no matter how busy he may
My child is not perfect; no child is. However, when another child threatens to physically assault my child, that is one thing. If you follow through, there will be legal consequences. I will call the police on your child. This is not the 1980’s. Physical assault is a big deal, and if you, as a parent, allow your child to conduct themselves this way, then maybe you need to be investigated as well. I don’t think your child will be a tough guy to the police if and when they get called. That would be just step one in a nightmare GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

be. Joey makes sure to give his customers the attention they need to make them feel like they are family. Of course, Steve (Charlie), is very nice, as well. Joey, thanks for the garlic knots and stay as sweet as you are. In a world where people do not go out of their way to help others, it is delightful to know you.
I’d like to thank my employer, Bristol ID. By implementing a few new procedures and policies, they are doing their best to make it a safe environment during this uncertain time. Big thanks for all the staff of the local grocery stores for supporting our communities at this time!
Hannah Emmick is so wonderful and should be recognized for her caring and helpful spirit. Love that she is willing to help families with water and food. Love her! I emptied my pockets for a man to have meals for legal situation for you and your child. Teach your child to handle situations with class and communication, but I understand for some parents, conflict and police blotter fame is all they know. That inherited trait shines very brightly through your child. Too bad. Last month, I went into the grocery store, and while looking around, I saw a little one in her daddy’s arms. I noticed she had on a real cute dress with a matching hair band. I stopped to say ‘hi’ and left. As I was returning my cart mom, dad (each wearing coats) and their child were also leaving. To my shock, the toddler was still wearing only the light little dress with absolutely nothing else on her, no coat, blanket, etc. If they thought

a week. He went straight across the street to Burger King. Do what you can for others.
While checking out at Wegman’s last Sunday morning, I discovered I had forgotten my wallet. Facing embarrassment, I asked the girl at the checkout if I could it was not that cold enough for their daughter’s health, then why did they bother wearing coats themselves? call my wife hoping she could rescue me by phone. While on the phone, the girl proceeded to check out my purchases. I asked her to stop, but she told me that the kind man behind me was paying for my goods. I insisted on repaying him, but he said that it was his way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. customer. I exclusively used them even though I knew it was the highest place for prices around and spent $35 to $45 while stopping there and only there three times a week. I liked the two older men in charge. The mechanic, though very good, would make unnecessary comments about me or what I brought in to break the ice or amuse them. Even when they hired a new mechanic, his conversation became unprofessional as well. It hurt my feelings; they should’ve refrained from condescending comments. I tried another gas station, and it was run by all women. They were warm, friendly, talkative, respectful and apologetic when they were busy. I will now give my local business to them!

In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox." On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.
Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful.
On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.
· Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. See next week’s article for more smart food choices for seniors. DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES (NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers. Small Businesses, Big Benefits Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can: • Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it • Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future • Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded. Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon). Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants. Employee Incentives Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work. Additional Findings • When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing. • 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. Learn more about gift cards at www.firstdata. com/giftcards.

Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit:
Bri-Pen Senior Rides
HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.
Bri-Pen Senior Rides is always welcoming volunteers to serve as drivers, dispatchers and coordinators to provide rides to independently ambulatory Brighton and Penfield seniors (65+) to their medical appointments within Monroe County as well as to the Brighton and the Penfield Community Centers on weekdays. BriPen Senior Rides was started in 2017 and is sponsored by the Town of Penfield. It is a wholly volunteer, donation-based service that seniors, without any private transportation, may request one round trip ride or two one-way rides per week. Volunteers provide their services on the weekdays at times convenient for them.

ACROSS 1
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected problem should be handled as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. Someone who knows what you’re facing could provide needed advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unsettling situation seems to be taking forever to be resolved. Fortunately, your Bovine aptitude for patience is strong this week, so you’ll be more than able to wait it out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a stand against an uncalled-for situation involving a friend or co-worker isn’t easy, but somehow you’ll rise to the challenge and do it. Rely on advice from someone you trust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There are still some questions on all sides that need to be dealt with in order to allow hurt feelings to heal. Get your workplace tasks done early so that you can devote more time to loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Consider a new spring makeover that will show all you Leos and Leonas in your best light. A new hairdo and some fashionable new clothes can help put a fresh glow on your image. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some stormy, emotional weather can blow up in the workplace when an irate co-worker has strong words for you. But if you believe right is on your side, you’ll be able to ride it out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Creating more balance in your life is especially important now so that you’re not distracted when you get into projects that will make demands on both your physical and mental energies. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As much as you enjoy being right when others are not, show your generous side by offering to use what you know to everyone’s benefit. This way, you gain admirers and avoid resentment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week for the Archer to aim at healing relationships. Whether it’s at home, at work or among your friends, get everyone to set things straight and make a fresh start. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you like things done your way, this is a good time to listen to ideas from others. You might even find yourself agreeing with one or more of their suggestions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor positive action to reclaim your ideas from someone who might want the glory without doing any of the work. Expect to find many people rallying to support you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might feel uneasy about taking that step forward at work or in your private life. But who knows better than you that while treading water keeps you afloat, it doesn’t get you anywhere. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of creating positive attitudes and making people feel good about themselves. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot water and soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

Answers Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shanna Butler: Why I Call Honeoye Home By Amanda Dudek
S
hanna Butler and her husband of 13 years, Michael, are happily raising their two children in the town of Honeoye just as her parents, James and Bonnie Sykes did before her, and her grandparents did before them. Shanna has come full circle to relive the best parts of her childhood from the other side as a gift she is giving to her own children. “We moved to Honeoye when I was in the 1st grade,” she shared, noting that her parents wanted to live closer to family. The community was already a familiar one as they would regularly visit Shanna’s paternal grandparents there on the weekends. The wonderful school district was a benefit, too. “My parents volunteered all the time, especially for the school,” Shanna said of her parents who sit on the Board at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock. “When we moved to Honeoye, my parents jumped full bore into the school. My mom started working as a TA in Special Education and in the community.” Her parents’ involvement had a profound impact on Shanna. “Any community organization my parents could get involved in, they did,” Shanna said. “Anything my mom could get involved in to help kids at Honeoye, she did. Our home became a second home for several kids, and my parents were like their second parents.” Perhaps the most important impact came from James and Bonnie Sykes’ involvement in school theatre. “My mom was the director of the school’s plays,” explained Shanna. “My dad was the major set builder. My brother, sister and I all participated, as well. We ate dinner together every night because we were all involved in the same thing. I was very fortunate.” “My parents were such an important part of my extracurricular activities and things that I loved; they weren’t just spectators,” she continued. “I saw my parents every day all day long. At the end of the day, I could come to what I love – the theatre – and my parents were both there. That really stood out to me.” After graduating in 1998, Shanna decided to study theatre at the University of Buffalo, something of a family tradition, from which she graduated in 2004 Shanna Butler with degrees in musical theatre advocating for kindness! and dance as well as health and human resources. “During that whole time, my sister, brother and I would come back and help with the shows, lighting, hair, makeup, choreography,” shared Shanna. “I stayed very connected with the town and school, even moving back home for a time when I graduated.” Shanna soon met and married Michael Butler, and the two lived elsewhere for a time. It wasn’t long, however, before they found themselves moving to Honeoye. “My parents converted their home into a split level, and we moved in with them,” said Shanna. “I also opened a dance studio.” Much like her mother had several years before, Shanna quickly became involved with her children’s school, a school she knows and loves. “I work as a TA there,” she said. “I wanted to be involved in things at my kids’ school. I liked the small-town feel growing up and was very fortunate because my parents have always been extremely loving and involved in everything. I want that for my kids, too.” Shanna certainly makes many positive contributions. She is the president of the PTA and the dance instructor for several local students. She works in theatrical productions at the school, participates with the Honeoye Community Players group which includes planning the annual Honeoye Hometown Holiday events,

working closely with the school administration to bring new events to the school, participating in her children’s current extracurriculars and much more. “My parents always told me your school is only as good as you make it,” she stated. “I want to be a part of my kids’ education and the town of Honeoye, continuing to form those bonds that were so integral to my growing up here.” Children, as always, remain central to what Shanna does. “Children are my life. I value them so much,” she explained. Shanna recognized that current circumstances could make this a trying time for children and their families. “It is a different and new time for everybody,” she said. Shanna’s message to families today is one of encouragement. “Just be gentle with yourself during this time,” she advised. “Allow yourself to make mistakes and ask questions. Get outside, get some fresh air and do school later. Remember, you are not alone, and you can ask for help. You don’t have to be the best. Just do what you can and live in the moment.” “I love that our community helps and pitches in whenever we can. My kids are seeing this right now,” added Shanna. “This moment is history in the making.”

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones. How to Succeed at
Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help
“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday. Page 35

GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR
York Central School
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
