HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings. Page 4

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES (NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.
I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.
3.
I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.
4.
My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.
Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time. If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit). You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you. To start planning for your family’s future, visit the Agent Locator at www. newyorklife.com. It didn't contain the words "under God," though, until 1954, when they were added by an act of Congress in an attempt to check the creeping advance of "Godless Communism."
HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
‘Cotton Ball’ Sensation Is a Sign of Neuropathy ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 63-year-old male diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight.

DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. FISH and RHAFT Serve Rush and Henrietta Seniors By J. William Meister & FISH/RHAFT
I
n January 2020, Rush Seniors president, Jim Wilkins, presented a check for $500 from the Rush Seniors to Mark Heinz and Audrey Buck from the Rush-Henrietta FISH (Friends In Service Here), and RHAFT (Rush Henrietta Area Food Terminal). Heinz and Buck were the featured speakers at the Rush Senior monthly meeting. The monetary gift is just one example of the gratitude area seniors feel for FISH and RHAFT. FISH / RHAFT, Inc. volunteers, serving RushHenrietta School District residents, dedicate themselves to helping their senior neighbors with certain transportation needs as well as providing food for them and their families. Filling these needs is necessary for the health of our community. FISH / RHAFT, Inc., a nonprofit organization, is associated with the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce and a mission of the Rush-Henrietta Interfaith League.
delivering emergency food as necessary. Their holiday program, Adopt-A-Family and Senior Outreach Gift projects with RH Rotary and other community partners supported 52 families, 162 children, 107 adults and 312 senior households (345 senior residents). Staffed by volunteers, RHAFT is dependent upon the generosity of individuals, churches, congregations, schools, businesses and community groups. Families in need of food in an emergency can call 585-453-2370 for help Monday through Thursday, 9:00am to 3:00pm. Today, about 120 caring volunteers dedicate themselves to helping our neighbors with certain transportation needs and with providing food for families. They provide Rush and Henrietta individuals and families with a valuable network of support necessary for the health of our community. It takes many volunteers to provide services to our community: drivers, dispatchers, verifiers, not to mention computer record keepers and others to support that business. We invite you to partner with FISH or RHAFT, Inc. to meet the needs of the future. Your helping hand would be good for Rush and Henrietta. We hope you will feel inspired to join FISH/ RHAFT as a volunteer. Whether you can offer a few hours a week or a day or a month, we will make good use of your available time. Call 585-453-2370 or visit www.fishrhaftinc.org for more information.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Spring makes its own statement, so loud and clear that the gardener seems to be only one of the instruments, not the composer. ~ Geoffrey B. Charlesworth
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOMETOWN 1.
Joseph Gordon Young February 26, 2020 Mr. Joseph Gordon Young passed away peacefully on February 26, 2020, at the Veterans’ Home in Batavia, NY. Mr. Young leaves behind his loving wife Harriet of 68 years; three children, Patricia Jo Ferguson (Richard), Jeffery Young (LuAnn), and Larry Young; and four grandchildren, Veronica, Sarah, Ariel and Brandon Young. Joe, as he was called, was born on August 30, 1931, in Corning, NY where he was the youngest of 5 children. Following high school graduation, he spent time in the Army, worked on a farm, then worked at Foster Wheeler Corp for 12 years, and Eastman Kodak for 27 years. He was a certified welder and welding instructor at both Foster Wheeler and Eastman Kodak. Mr. Young was a skilled craftsman, focusing on woodworking. He rebuilt, remodeled and upgraded each home he owned over the past 60 years. In recent years, Joe built wooden toys each year for distribution to local children. He was known for making wooden signs and cabinets in his community and created beautiful decorative wooden pieces. His wood shop was his second home. When he wasn’t working with wood, Joe was restoring his many old classic tractors. A love of the outdoors was evident throughout Joe’s life. Camping was a main attraction for the family as his children were growing up. Annual vacations were always camping experiences. Starting with a tent, moving on to pop-up campers, a pull-behind camper, and, finally, a 5th-wheeler, these were useful equipment not only for vacationing but also a necessity when Joe was volunteering with the SOWERS. Throughout his lifetime, Joe was always active in his church community. At one time, he and his wife assisted with a church plant, hosting the new congregation in their home every week. After retirement, Joe utilized his trade skills and his love for volunteer mission work through working with the SOWERS group. With his wife, he traveled to many sites to refurbish Christian camps and schools over a ten-year period. They consider this a most rewarding and enjoyable time in their life together. Mr. Young’s friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at a Memorial service to be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 7th at Peace Memorial Church on Buffalo Rd, North Chili, NY.

over a bit, I would question your driving abilities. If you stubbornly stayed in the lane and caused a crash, you can tell it to the Judge. Why? Because you had the right of way, you were justified? Police go around vehicles, also. Do you complain about them too? With so many cars on the roads you must be more flexible and understanding. Uber may be a better alternative for you.
Yeah, we know you have the right of way. My question is, would you purposely cause an accident because you have that right of away? If someone’s going around a delivery truck or mail truck and crosses the center line by a foot or two, why can’t you just move over? Nobody’s trying to force you into a ditch. If you can’t move

This has been going on all year for several years at one farm in particular. The roadway is constantly covered. Why should I have to drive extra miles to avoid this area and the stench as it splashes all over my car? I don’t see this anywhere else. I know the Sheriff has been there multiple times, so why is still happening, causing danger and damage to vehicles?

you have high blood pressure you are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease? High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States. About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. If your blood pressure gets too high, the blood vessels in your body‚ including those in your kidneys‚ may become damaged. This damage makes it harder for the kidneys to filter blood and remove wastes and extra water from the body. Kidney disease can get worse over time, and if not treated it can lead to kidney failure. And while high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, the reverse is also true: kidney disease can lead to high blood pressure. Simple tests can tell you whether you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. Ask your health care professional if you have been tested for high blood pressure and kidney disease.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the U.S. Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or “K-9 Corps.”
Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease are aware they have the disease. This is because kidney disease often doesn’t have any symptoms early on. The good news is that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits. “Our research continues to uncover the complexities of the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease,” says Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “And what we are finding supports the message that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.” Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that help you manage your blood pressure will also help to keep your kidneys healthy. You can prevent or slow kidney disease progression by taking the following steps to lower your blood pressure: Take medicines as prescribed. Blood pressure medicines often play a key role in lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight or have obesity, reducing your weight may lower high blood pressure. Select healthier food and beverage options. Follow a healthy eating plan that focuses on heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats that are low in sodium. Stop smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases your risk for high blood pressure, and worsens problems related to high blood pressure. For help quitting, call 1-800-QUITNOW or go to Smokefree.gov. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure and metabolism. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Manage stress and make physical activity part of your routine. Healthy stress-reducing activities and regular physical activity can lower blood pressure. Try to get at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day. “You can manage your blood pressure and its complications through healthy lifestyle habits, which include exercise, following a healthy eating plan and taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by your doctor,” says Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “It’s important to know your numbers because controlling or lowering your blood pressure can prevent or delay serious complications like kidney disease and heart disease.” For more information, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
