DID YOU KNOW? Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event. THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture. org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them to members of his royal household on Easter. Page 10

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vitamin D Works Slowly
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any reason to start taking vitamin D at age 90? I’m in good health except for osteopenia and high blood pressure. How long does it take to have an effect? -- P.S. ANSWER: In your case, there are potentially two good reasons to start taking vitamin D -- if your blood levels are low. One is that with osteopenia (a condition of low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis, which increases risk for bone fractures), replacing low vitamin D can improve bone strength and reverse bone loss. This can keep people from needing other medications for osteoporosis, which are much more likely than vitamin D to have side effects. Older people with vitamin D deficiency also often have some muscle weakness. If you can’t get out of a chair without using your hands and you have a low vitamin D level, replacing vitamin D may help with the weakness. Of course, there are many causes for weakness in a person and there is no guarantee of effectiveness, but vitamin D is very safe in moderate doses, like 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily. Vitamin D also may reduce fall risk, probably by improving strength, especially in combination with exercise. Vitamin D works slowly -- weeks to months for muscle effects, and months to years for bone effects. ***

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was seeing my primary care physician every six months for about five years. We had mutual respect, and I enjoyed seeing him. Then, I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had to see other doctors for a long time. Meanwhile, the spinal stenosis my primary care physician had diagnosed was becoming untenable and ruining my quality of life. Even though I am still seeing cancer doctors, I called my primary care physician to make an appointment to discuss the spinal stenosis situation with him. After a long wait, I finally got someone in my primary care physician’s office and, after another long wait, was informed that he could not see me for six months -- there was not one opening until then. I was flabbergasted and asked to be put on a cancellation list. “We don’t keep those,” the lady responded. I reluctantly took the appointment and decided to wait it out. Meanwhile, I saw one of my cancer doctors today, and after explaining this situation to him, he replied: “Doctors don’t do that. He obviously doesn’t want you as a patient anymore. I would find another primary care physician.” What is your response to this? I am 71 years old, and other than spinal stenosis and breast cancer (which was caught early and treated with surgery and radiation a year ago), I enjoy reasonably good health. -- J.E.Y. ANSWER: I hope there is another side to this story, since I am horrified that a physician would make a longstanding patient with cancer and spinal stenosis wait six months for an appointment. That is not appropriate medical care. While I fully understand the point of view of your cancer doctor -- and would be tempted to find another doctor -- it sounds like saving the relationship you had with your PCP might be worth another try. I think speaking directly with your primary care doctor might clear up any misunderstanding.

HOROSCOPES
Due to the COVID-19 Virus, our office will be closed until we receive the okay to return to business as normal.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real takecharge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.( c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass. Page 16

NOTICE to our Patrons THE LIBRARY REMAINS CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19.
PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
All library materials are now due JUNE 30. Book Return remains locked – please “shelter” your library materials at your home.
Working From Home With Pets Around DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've been working from home for the past two weeks, and my dog and cat, "Mutt" and "Shelley," won't leave me alone! I tried putting them into the bedroom during conference calls, but they yowl and meow nonstop. What can I do Brad in Boston DEAR BRAD: Ah, the joys of working from home: like your cat walking across the keyboard. It's clear that your pets are overjoyed to see you at home all day. They're thinking, "Yes! Dad's here! He didn't leave for hours and hours today! We can play with him all day!" And then they pester you for attention nonstop, right? And when you shut them in the bedroom, they're not happy. "Dad's in there! In the other room! Come let us out so we can play with you!" Like millions of people, your work routine has changed for at least several weeks. That means your pets' routines have changed, too, and you need to establish new ones. First thing in the morning, give Shelley and Mutt lots of attention. Take Mutt out for a walk and play/training session where you reinforce basic commands and let him burn off energy. Indoors, grab a cat toy and play with Shelley for a bit. If you have a scheduled conference call, take Mutt out again for a few minutes or play with him indoors beforehand. This may calm him enough that he can remain in the room. Take frequent five-minute breaks and give attention to your pets each time. Use this remote working as an opportunity to train your pets and spend more time with them. They can provide plenty of stress relief, too -- something we all need right about now. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Stay Fed, Stay Safe Life has certainly changed recently. Depending on where you live, it might have changed a lot. Stay home if you're a senior. Stay home if you have a medical condition. That's what we've been told. That's all well and good, but what if we really need to shop for food? What if we couldn't stock up last week because the Social Security benefit hadn't made it to our checking account yet? If you're really in a jam for food, call the food bank. Of all the places, that one is most likely to still be open. They're trying to keep people fed, especially seniors, as well as children who don't get free meals because the schools are now closed. Ask if they have a driveup pantry where you can be handed some bags of food through the car window. You might find that food is being distributed at places like the senior center or a school parking lot or via Meals on Wheels, even if you aren't signed up as a participant. If you do dare to enter a store, a number of grocery stores are designating the first hour or two in the morning for seniors only. Not all stores are doing this, so call first. If they don't do it, suggest it. You're more likely to find the things you need during this time as the shelves will (hopefully) be restocked overnight. And with fewer people in the store, you're less likely to run into someone with the virus, but stay away from other people anyway. If you go, be sure to take sanitizing wipes for the cart handles. Remember, if you go out, you're really not safe from the virus. Do it as little as possible.
Do you relish the idea of an afternoon nap? If so, you're in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Napoleon, and Albert Einstein each fancied afternoon naps. Youngsters nap, and so do many seniors. But by and large, humans are part of the minority of mammals that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleep-deprived. It also may be a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. The longer and later one naps, the greater the potential it will interfere with nighttime sleeping or backfire and cause daytime grogginess. TF203783 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

She was born at home in the village of Madison, NY, February 27, 1930; the only child of Glenn Matthew and Alice Rozilla Lloyd Jones. At the age of four, Glenice and her parents moved to the Lloyd farm in Madison Center where Alice was born. She attended the one-room school in the Center her first four grades with Helen Snell as a teacher. The school closed in 1939, sending students to the high school in the village. In 1946 the family moved back to the Village where Glenice graduated from Madison Central School with the Class of 1947. In September 1948 she graduated from St. Joseph’s Infant Home in Utica as a child nurse. On December 27, 1948 in her parents’ home on East Main Street she married Emery A. Roberts. Hello, my name is Beth, and I am a petite diluted torti. I have lived with my Mom for 19 months now. She rescued me from the Batavia shelter who saved my life. I was brought in very thin, nearly starved, and kind of sick. The nice people at the shelter nursed me back to health and then my Mom adopted me! I have a canine brother and we love each other a lot. I have great food to eat now and lots of lovies from my Mom.

Senior Living during Coronavirus: An Inside Scoop BY AMANDA DUDEK
D
uring this pandemic, many continue to be concerned about one of our most vulnerable populations: our nation’s elderly. With many senior living facilities closed to the public and others even asking staff to relocate to their facilities, the impact these necessary restrictions may have on elderly residents is of growing concern. These senior facilities, like Morgan Estates Assisted Living Community in Geneseo, are doing everything they can to provide extra support to their residents. Victoria Finn is an Activities and Resident Care Assistant at Morgan Estates. “We stopped visitation for the residents’ protection,” she explained. “Now, families come to the window and talk to their loved ones through the phone.” Victoria added that this is particularly hard on residents with conditions like dementia who do not understand why their loved ones are unable to visit. “We have to be very encouraging to them during this time,” she said. “We are all staying positive and being a shoulder to lean on, being there for our residents because this is a really hard time.” That they are and more. Morgan Estates is also trying to keep residents’ schedules as unchanged as possible with creativity and flexibility. For example, Friday night entertainment now consists of movies or live performance videos rather than visiting performers. Residents are still encouraged to go on outdoor walks but are escorted on them one at a time. Resident favorite, Bingo, continues but in the dining room so that everyone has their own table six feet apart, and the cards and materials are thoroughly sanitized. There are new activities, as well. “We are creating a spiritual board for our residents,” shared Victoria. “We asked our residents for their favorite quotes or to share something for which they are thankful. A lot of them said they are thankful they are living here, which was very nice. Some residents shared their favorite Bible verse. We have never done this before, but I think it will be beautiful.” Maintaining family connections, while challenging, remains more important than ever. “We are helping them write cards to their loved ones,” Victoria stated. “Our Activities Director, Danielle Pickett, is hoping to decorate eggs for Easter and leave them on the other side of the window with messages and candy from our residents to their families. We’re doing everything we can to help them reach out to their loved ones.”
Of course, this situation has been challenging for caregivers, as Activiti and nd Resident R id t Care Ca Assistant A istant well. “When we come in, we wash Activities at Morgan Estates, Victoria Finn, our hands thoroughly, have our temperature taken and answer a wearing her face mask. few questions,” shared Victoria. “Everyone wears face masks and gloves constantly, and now, we are not permitted to leave the facility on our breaks [to further limit possible exposure].” Even their after work routines have changed. “When I get home, I go straight in the shower and wash my clothes,” she said emphatically. “The last thing I want is for my family to get it, although that is just an extra precaution.” These extra efforts are not going unnoticed. 92-year-old Morgan Estates resident, Tony Caito, said he feels safer. “I can’t imagine if I were on the outside,” said Tony. “Here, they have taken care of everything to make sure we are as safe as possible.”
entertainment. “All of them have their masks on,” he said. “I feel really safe. They take those of us outside who would like to go out. They make everything as normal possible and supplement some activities with other activities.” Tony shared an example of the daily activities schedule residents receive. “I didn’t come here to die,” he said. “I came here for a new life, and now, I have people to talk and laugh with.” Tony is also looking forward to a visit from his daughter with whom he also Facetimes. “She will be on the outside,” he clarified. “The window will be closed, and we will be six feet apart.” A retired teacher from Dansville, Tony moved to Morgan Estates just eleven months ago. “I feel this is my home now,” he explained. “I feel safer inside here than if I were outside at my [former] home in Dansville. They come in every day, take our temperature, smile, and we joke back and forth,” he continued. “They are really doing the best they can, and although this is their job, I feel we are like family.” At the youthful age of twenty, Victoria shares a similar sentiment. “In all honesty, it doesn’t feel like work,” she confided. “It feels like a second home here. These residents feel like family, and I would do anything for them. I love it, and I love coming in here.”
92-year-old resident, Tony Caito, feeling safe at home at Morgan Estates
When asked what others can do, Victoria immediately exclaimed, “Send cards! A daycare facility sent us cards, and the residents loved them. They had cute, little messages like ‘Stay Strong!’ and ‘Thinking of You!’ These brought big smiles all around.”

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.
Take a moment to let a business owner know you saw their ad in the Penny Saver, tell a friend about an upcoming event or like any of our posts on social media. These small gestures make all the difference to us.

It’s sad that someone must vent about people leaving the painted rocks in parks. All they want to do is brighten someone’s day. They take the time to do this, which I think is great. Especially now, when hiking is about the only thing that we can do. I can’t wait to find one and pay it forward.

To everyone who is able to stay home or is employed at a job where you are able to wash your hands when needed: Have you even thought about the people whose jobs take them out of the house everyday -- into their vehicles or a job site where there is not sink to wash? They rely on the hand sanitizer to effectively prevent illness. Shame on you if you are one of those people who won’t share what you don’t even need because you are home or at a job where you can wash multiple times per day or as needed. Soap and water are more effective than the sanitizer for people who have access to it during the day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

To the woman in a red jacket or sweater with very blonde hair who purposely came up behind me on (local street) where I was avoiding bad sidewalks and people on bikes on Tuesday, March 31st, I apologize for the tongue lashing I gave you. You came up from behind me, put your hand on my shoulder and scared me! You bent over and confronted me about someone caring about me, which I am sure isn’t you, as you were within two feet of my face. The requirement at present is 6 feet. I do not apologize for my anger; I only apologize for what I said to you. Please be respectful of others on the street. Media needs to report positive news, not panic and gloom and doom 24/7. It scares our children. Yes, we know about the virus going around, so why always post numbers of more and more cases? Why not report

Regarding the person who complained that their groceries were not packed properly: I had the same problem, plus the bags were packed too heavy. I solved both problems. I fold my reusable bags and place them in one bag. When I get to the checkout, I place one folded bag on the conveyer and place the groceries I want in that bag behind it. I do the same with the second bag, etc. Produce is with produce, meat with meat, etc., and bags are light. I leave the store a happy person.

Thank you to Mount Morris Central School District for continuing to make student lunches available by pick up daily and for further looking out for families by offering rolls of toilet paper to student families, as well. Their “teacher parade” of cars through several village streets was a blessing, and their continued support for families has been inspiring. Thank you!
To the person who ranted about Painted Rocks littering the parks, when I read it, all I could say is wow! I love to see the painted rocks in the parks, and I do not consider them as litter. Everyone I know smiles when they see them! I agree with you about littering; what you bring into the park should be what you take out with you. But the painted rocks spread joy and happiness, which is what we need more of, especially during this time. Please do not be so grumpy about the painted rocks.

DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.
How to make your own face mask
to help stop the spread of the coronavirus The CDC recommends you cover your mouth to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. Simply follow these instructions: Materials: 12”x9” piece of fabric 12”x9” piece of interfacing 14” narrow elastic
1. Cut material and interfacing to 12 x 9 inches 2. Iron interfacing to material (adhesive side to back of material)
NOW’S THE TIME TO
3. Once ironed, fold fabric in half with interfacing on the outside
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION
4. Cut two pieces of elastic — each 7-inches long
With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features)
5. Pin and sew 1/4-inch from edge leaving a 2-inch gap in the center 6. Put elastic band on each corner, inside the material and pin to keep in place, making sure the elastic is not twisted. Pin in center as well
HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

7. Sew along both edges, making sure to sew extra stitches in the elastic. Turn the fabric right side out through the 2” gap. Iron mask flat. 8. Fold 2 pleats. Sew around the entire perimeter of the mask. This holds the pleats in place and closes the 2-inch gap.
Test out your new mask when it’s necessary to head out to do your grocery shopping or wherever social distancing may be difficult.
FYI… You can use any sort of cotton fabric. Why not cut up an old t-shirt with your favorite team’s logo on it! And, if you don’t have interfacing, never fear. Any mask is better than no mask!

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
* Spice racks can pull double duty on the walls by your vanity. They are the perfect size for toiletries and makeup items. They also work very nicely for nail polish bottles. * "To get the best reading on meat using a meat thermometer, try sticking it in from the side. It can go in further, and to me it feels like I get a better reading than poking it in all over a steak." -- M.E. in Florida * Things you can freeze in small portions using an ice cube tray: tomato paste, coffee, coconut milk, broth or stock, wine, herbed butter or herbed olive oil. * "If you have trouble holding your cat still to clip his claws, sneak up on him while he's asleep. You might only get a couple done before he catches on and wriggles away, but you'll get there." -- P.L. in Oklahoma City (This great tip works for babies, too! -- JoAnn) * "To get the dog to stop eating his food so fast, my daughter puts dry food in a silverware sorter -- the plastic insert that holds cutlery in a drawer. Their dogs have to work at it, and it has helped them slow down so they don't get sick. She can just toss it in the dishwasher to clean, too!" -- U.E. in Ohio
