Penny Saver PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Play It Safe, Keep Cats Inside
Active Living 50+ ____________________15
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m staying inside during this emergency, as the state government has requested, but I still let my tomcat “Dodger” out during the day. He would go crazy being stuck inside. However, my daughter told me to stop letting him out, because she says pets can get coronavirus, too. Is Dodger in danger? Could he get it and spread it to me? – Darlene B., Springfield, Massachusetts

DEAR DARLENE: Currently, no pets within the U.S. are known to have contracted the coronavirus. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 (and six more tigers are showing symptoms). But there’s very little data to work with right now. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have definitive evidence that pets can contract COVID-19, they are playing it safe and urging owners to protect their pets from exposure to the virus. So you should, too. You don’t know where Dodger goes when he’s out, so you don’t know if he is being exposed to this virus or other viruses or bacteria that are much more easily contracted and can cause serious illness. Keep him inside and find ways to keep him from losing his mind. That includes spending more time playing with him, making sure he has plenty of toys, and giving him scratching and climbing spots, plus a hideaway. If his behavior gets worse, contact the veterinarian -- Dodger may need to take medication to calm him down for the short term. Also, because he’s been outside, you need to take precautions for yourself. Wash your hands after petting or picking up Dodger, and after cleaning his litter box. Wash his food and water bowls daily in hot soapy water. Here’s to both of you staying healthy and safe!

2018. He was emaciated, had mange and was terrified. I brought him home as a foster but officially adopted him one month later. Sophia was given to us by a friend this February. We weren’t expecting her, and it took a couple weeks for Ali to accept her. Sophia was only 10 lbs. so I was worried he’d accidentally hurt her. He had never met such a small, brave puppy before. Sophia is gaining 2 pounds a week, so she’ll probably be bigger than him! Having two dogs is not only fun, but it’s good for them too. They’re best friends forever now. They spend their time either wrestling, running around, stealing each other’s toys or cuddling. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

ROOFING & SIDING
GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day • Wednesday, April 22nd
Your Backyard Isn’t Cancelled…
6 Tips
To Celebrate Earth Day Right At Home
(NAPSI)—The 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 can be a good time for everyone to take some time to get outside, even if current conditions mean a community event to celebrate isn’t available. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to honor the Earth in your own backyard. “You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, nature starts at your back door,” explains Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an organization that encourages outdoor learning experiences, stewardship of green spaces, and care for living landscapes for the benefit of all. “Get outside, mow your lawn, trim bushes, plant a butterfly bush. By becoming a steward of your yard, you are helping the planet. At the same time, you’re supporting your health and well-being, which is increasingly important as families spend more time at home.”
1
Get outside. Your backyard is an outdoor living room and safe place for pets and kids to play. Science proves spending time in your family’s yard is good for your health and well-being, and so important today as everyone looks for creative ways to stay well while being confined to the home. Researchers have found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.
Research shows people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes as well as higher levels of self-esteem and better moods overall. They also reported lower levels of tension and stress.
2
Make the outdoors a family project. Take your loved ones outside to assess your space. What’s working well? What could be improved? What can you plan to do together in your backyard? Anything needing to be cleaned up? Make a plan to expand or spruce up your yard.
3
Connect kids to nature. Free, online, do-at-home lesson plans are available from the TurfMutt.com. The environmental education program resources and activities, based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, give kids the prompts they need to have fun learning about and exploring the nature and science in their own backyards.
4
Know your climate zone. Learn about climate-zone-appropriate plants, the importance of pollinators, and how backyards can support local wildlife. Conduct a plant inventory to determine what’s currently thriving in your backyard. Match that up against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine the best types of turf, trees, shrubs, and plants for the climate zone.
5
Keep pollinators in mind. Your yard is an important part of the connected ecosystem providing much-needed food and shelter for pollinators, such as birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and other creatures. Select a variety of plants that will bloom all year long. The Audubon Society’s database can help determine which birds will be attracted to which plants for unique regions so you can make good choices about what to plant.
6
Plant, prune or mow. Staying confined to home base doesn’t mean gardening and yard work have to stop. Order garden supplies online or have them delivered from a nearby nursery. Mow the lawn and trim bushes.

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.
With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to still come together. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!
Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the gang together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. Call Penny Lane Promotional Products at 585-226-8111 to order yours today!
While our children’s birthdays (and ours!) may be celebrated differently this year, it’s important to highlight how close we all are, no matter the distance between Don’t forget to decorate! Delores M. Miles October 17, 1924 – April 12, 2020 Delores M. Miles, 95, of Brunswick passed away peacefully Easter Sunday, April 12 at Hospice of the Golden Isles with her loving son and daughter-in-law by her side. Delores was born October 17, 1924 in Hornell, New York to Ommer and Mabel (Gay) Nisbet. She was the oldest daughter with five other siblings. She graduated from Hornell High School in 1942. On September 11, 1943, Delores married the love of her life, Richard A. Miles. They resided in Springwater, New York for the next 30 years where they raised their four children. Delores’ focus was always her family. She was a dedicated mother who sewed clothing for her children, kept the cookie jar full, taught card games, and created holiday traditions that her grandchildren have continued with their children. She was an excellent cook and her recipes have been passed on to the younger generation. In 1973 Richard was offered a job in Brunswick, Georgia which he accepted and they relocated there. They became members of College Place Methodist Church and many friendships formed as they participated in Sunday School, pot-luck dinners, and communal activities. Delores was in charge of the Church’s Memorial Book for several years where she displayed her beautiful penmanship. Delores also became acquainted with her good neighbors, joined a Bunco group, and took up ceramics. She enjoyed being outside caring for her lawn and flowers, as well as feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Her satsuma tree produced many dozens of satsumas that she enjoyed giving away to friends and family at holiday time. Delores and Richard also made and decorated dozens of cut-out Christmas cookies that were shipped to their New York grandchildren and distributed locally to family and friends. Delores was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Richard; her five siblings and their spouses; her son, Richard Alonzo; and son-in-law, Stephen Didas. Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Didas of Hartford, NY and Carolyn Wager (Thomas) of Springwater, NY and her son, David Miles (Debbie) of Brunswick, GA. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Lisa Harrington (Kenneth), Kristin Beswick (Matthew), Michael Didas (Sarah), Megan Capone (Andrew), Ryan Didas (Amanda), Marsha Campini (Angelo), Mark Wager ( Jessica Thomas), Scott Miles (Elli), Kathy Vasquez (Roger), and Beth Miles; 22 (soon to be 23) great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contribution may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Devleopment, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.
Glenice L. Jones Roberts April 2, 2020 Glenice L. Jones Roberts passed away April 2, 2020. She was born at home in the village of Madison, NY, February 27, 1930; the only child of Glenn Matthew and Alice Rozilla Lloyd Jones. At the age of four, Glenice and her parents moved to the Lloyd farm in Madison Center where Alice was born. She attended the one-room school in the Center her first four grades with Helen Snell as a teacher. The school closed in 1939, sending students to the high school in the village. In 1946 the family moved back to the Village where Glenice graduated from Madison Central School with the Class of 1947. In September 1948 she graduated from St. Joseph’s Infant Home in Utica as a child nurse. On December 27, 1948 in her parents’ home on East Main Street she married Emery A. Roberts. This union lasted 52 years until Emery’s passing on January 27, 2001. Glenice cared for children before and after school and later worked as a substitute in the school cafeteria. She was also a watcher many years for town, village and school elections. For several years she was the Village Clerk. She greatly enjoyed having grandchildren spend time with her during summers. The shelves in the cellar were like a store with canned fruits and vegetables, especially green beans. Her spare time activities were knitting, crocheting and reading. Glenice attended First Baptist Church in Madison and enjoyed summer evening services at the Welsh Church in Nelson. After moving to Wayland, NY in October 2005 she attended St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Dansville. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew and Jeanne Roberts of Wayland, NY and Mark and Candace Roberts of Philadelphia, PA; one grandson, Matthew and Rachel Roberts of Bath, NY and their son Zachary; four granddaughters, Karen and Michael Phillips of Farmington, NY and their children Hannah and Reid; Rhian and Dong Hyeon Jeong of Florham Park, NJ and their children, Yuri and Jimin; Chelsea Roberts of Philadelphia, PA and Kendall Roberts of Philadelphia, PA. CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Earth Day Tip: When choosing personal care products, apply the same eco standards as you do with food. Check the ingredients list to find safe products. Go for products that are free of dyes and perfumes. When possible, choose products that use the least packaging.

* Have a bright flashlight handy in the laundry room. It’s much easier to identify stains with the right lighting. Sending a still-stained garment to the dryer can set the stain, making it much harder or impossible to remove. * Three easy steps to sear your meat: Preheat the skillet, wait 30 seconds before you add oil and pat your meat dry before placing in the skillet. * “I use a paperclip covered by tissue to clean the cracks on my keyboard.” -- I.P. in South Carolina * If you leave a load of laundry too long in the washer, you can re-run it and add a cup of white vinegar to the load to kill the musty smell of potential mildew. * “I make my own little good-behavior coupons for my three children. I print them on different colors of paper for each child. They can cash in coupons for activities or rewards, and if they go in together to get something, I will give them bonus coupons for working together. I think this has made goal-setting a priority for them, and it has helped them learn the lesson of shared goals -- an important one for a large family.” -- R.V.F. in Arizona

Wayland American Legion Hosts Easter Bunny Drive Thru By Amanda Dudek
E
aster took place a little differently this year across our nation as coronavirus restrictions remained in place through the holiday, but the Wayland American Legion, Post #402, Post Commander Kevin Mark and the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary were determined to bring the joy of Easter to the families of Wayland, particularly the children. Who better to put a smile on children’s faces than the Easter Bunny himself? “Everything has been so tough with kids and parents having to stay at home,” said Mark. “We wanted to do something for them. The Wayland Legion is home to many area children and families, and we still want to be there for our community.” They decided the best way to bring the Easter bunny to the community was to create an outdoor stop for children to drive through, see him, wave and receive, what else, candy! “We gave out Easter basket filler bags because baskets were going to be an issue to keep sanitary,” explained Mark. “The Ladies Auxiliary wore gloves and masks as they placed the candy and prefilled Easter eggs into gallon size bags. Then, we kept the bags on the porch so that people didn’t have to get out of their cars.” The community response was incredible. “We handed out 113 bags total,” Mark stated. “We were surprised and shocked! Most of the kids were ecstatic to see the Easter bunny, and it was Officer Barnhart visits the good for families to get out Easter Bunny in Wayland! of the house for a minute and do something different. Most of the kids who came were younger kids, and they really enjoyed it.” Kevin Mark feels the event was appreciated. “We have received a lot of positive feedback and a lot of thank you’s

for what we did,” he said. “People have thanked us for not being afraid to step up and do something for the community. These kids have been locked in, and it’s spring,” he continued. “It is a tough, uncertain spot in life right now. We were glad to bring some happiness to our community.” Mark thanked the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary, as well. “The Wayland Ladies Auxiliary was key, as always,” he praised them. “It was chilly that day, and they came and fought off the cold. They were awesome! The girl who helped bring us the Easter Bunny is a Junior Ladies Auxiliary member, and she was terrific!” As soon as life begins to return to normal, Mark hopes the Wayland American Legion will be able to hold many events for the community. “We are not open right now,” he said. “It is tough, but we have been doing a little work on the inside so it is refreshed when the community comes back in.”

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Summer Dreams Surely our world will be back to normal this summer ... right? Surely we’ll be able to get out of the house without fearing every person who comes near us. We’ll be able to leisurely wander through the grocery store, which will be stocked as it used to be. We’ll stop to talk to friends on the street and sit in coffee shops and chat. We’ll attend church, go to our meetings, stroll through the neighborhood admiring the flowers and take part in our exercise classes. Surely we’ll be able to do those things again, right? Yes. We will. But first we have to get there. To get back to where we used to be, we have to stay healthy now. We need exercise to stay healthy. Even if you can’t go to a class, you can find plenty of them for seniors on YouTube. Look through the offerings and bookmark a few. Rotate through them on a daily basis so you don’t get bored. Go to youtube.com and put “exercises for seniors” in the search box. Some of them are even broken down by age. We need to stay mentally healthy as well, despite the television news. Check the Good News Network online [www.goodnewsnetwork.org] for positive, uplifting stories. You also can put “good news” in your browser search box. It’s been difficult to get grocery store deliveries in a lot of areas because they have little stock. However, if you get delivery of your prescriptions (many pharmacies are providing this service now), call to ask whether they can add a few things to your order. Many drugstores carry soups, crackers, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water and snacks -- some even carry a limited supply of fresh fruit.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. Pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors – including those who may be divorced or widowed – feel more secure and happy. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A recent study found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

HOW TO
SUCCEED AT SOCIAL DISTANCING ACCORDING TO YOUR ZODIAC SIGN
Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help “flatten the curve” now! ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19): Now is not the time to discover whether the person you live with is truly “the one” – confinement means you literally have no other options! Instead, why don’t you tune up your relationship with yourself? Enroll for free in the Yale online course The Science of Wellbeing. The grass is always greener where you water it! TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20): You’re slowly awakening to the fact that your former feelings of independence were just that – feelings. Time to brush up your skill sets – cooking, cleaning, and creative work. Reintegrate productivity into your daily routine with the pomodoro technique and experience the profound happiness of an ordered life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 20): Flamingos don’t breed well in captivity without mirrors to create the impression of a larger group. You’re feeling the same; how can you tell the status of your work reputation if you never leave the house? Get out of your head by taking on new projects that excite you. Take ownership over your own progress – everyone will appreciate it, but most importantly, you won’t care anymore if they do! CANCER (JUN 21-JUL 22): Whether your fears are rational or irrational makes little difference – the real question you want to ask yourself is whether they are actionable. If not, do as the Stoics do and remember it is virtue – not external things – that grounds true happiness.
LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22): Your positive energy is more contagious than ever! What is more, your confinement partners are all on board to help execute your vision. As long as you don’t allow perfectionism to spoil the party, your dreams will become reality sooner than you think. VIRGO (AUG 23-SEP 22): Health is wealth, and your new workout routine is already starting to show dividends. Up the energy while helping your local economy by signing up for streaming classes available through your neighborhood gym or studio! LIBRA (SEP 23-OCT 22): Your creative juices are flowing and they must be released. Is it time to recite original poetry or strum your guitar from the front porch to passers-by? Absolutely! Who doesn’t love being serenaded, especially by someone as charming as you? SCORPIO (OCT 23-NOV 21): Confinement is suiting you just fine this week as you deepen your connection with those whom you might have been taking for granted. Try listening to an audiobook together – Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow will speak to everyone right now. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21): You realize that the internet has increased our access to everything, but at the cost of replacing direct experience and limiting reality. But is there anywhere else to go now? Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It will be harder, but also more rewarding, than you think. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 19): Everyone’s been talking about COVID-19 as the “black swan.” Take charge of the rhetoric by reading Taleb’s 2007 bestseller The Black Swan, which explores how we build resilience and even robustness in the face of negative events. AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18): Look at you, just barreling through your reading list! Enhance your experience of the beautiful this week by exploring another segment – might we suggest the free Digital Concert Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic? PISCES (FEB 19-MAR 20): Knowledge and love can never be truly divided. Share the wisdom of this unity with those you love by keeping a journal of your thoughts – be they spiritual insights, cocktail recipes or dating tips – to be passed down to them as the most precious piece of their inheritance.

In response to the poor bagging rant: I’m a cashier, and while I pride myself in bagging properly, I’m an anomaly. While some mistakes, such as crushing bread or mixing chemicals with food, are inexcusable - I find that most bagging issues stem from the customer rather than the cashier. When using reusable bags, it’s important to think about how you want your bags packed when you’re putting your groceries on the belt. If you want something in

a separate bag, don’t put it with everything else. If you want all your frozen items together, put them together. Put bread and similar items towards the back. Okay, so now that dog owners are doing a better job of bagging their pet’s poop when they take them for a walk, the next step is to then take that bag and throw it in the next available receptacle. I can’t believe that people are now leaving their used poop bags along the trails where they walk. What’s the inference here? Do you think someone else will take care of this for you? Come on, dog owners! If you can muster the energy to take your dog on long walks, you can certainly summon the initiative to take your poop bag with you until you can throw it away properly.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Starting Radiation Treatment ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is about to start radiation treatment for stage one cancer on his vocal chord. Does radiation negatively affect the immune system the same way chemotherapy does? Should I be looking out for people who don’t vaccinate? -- H.T. ANSWER: Radiation can affect the immune system when it is given to large areas of the body, since the immune system cells are largely sensitive to radiation. Whole-body radiation is rarely used now, except in people planning for bone-marrow transplant. By contrast, localized radiation does not adversely affect the immune system to anywhere near the degree that chemotherapy can, since the bone marrow, where the immune system cells live, is diffuse throughout the large bones of the body. As far as avoiding unvaccinated individuals, people who are unvaccinated and who are healthy do not pose a risk. It is in an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease (there have been localized outbreaks of measles and mumps in the past year, and there are seasonal outbreaks of influenza) that unvaccinated people are much more likely to be infectious. So anyone with immune system disease (such as chemotherapy or whole-body radiation) should avoid people with potentially infectious illness. Caregivers of people with severe immune disease certainly should be immunized according to current guidelines. Even elderly people whose caregivers are immunized for flu get flu less than those whose caregivers are not. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I know women who have had double mastectomies in order to reduce the risk of cancer. It seems extreme, but I guess it depends on the evaluation of risk. Are prophylactic hysterectomies done for similar reasons? It used to be routinely done when a woman had passed her reproductive years. I’m interested in your take on this. Will health insurance cover these types of surgeries, and if not, how expensive are they? -- S.B. ANSWER: Prophylactic mastectomies -- that is, surgery to remove the breasts in order to avert a breast cancer diagnosis -- are a reasonable choice for some women at very high risk of breast cancer, especially those with a family history of breast cancer who have an identifiable genetic predisposition, such as one of the BRCA gene mutations. This decision should be made carefully and in consultation with her doctors, usually an oncologist and a genetic counselor. I have very little experience with this in my own patients, fortunately, but I understand that in the case of women with very high genetic risk, it usually is covered by insurance, if it is the consensus of the treating physicians and the patient that she should proceed. Hysterectomy -- the removal of a uterus -- is not done routinely today the way it was decades ago. They are removed for disease, either benign or malignant. However, the removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, called a bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, is performed in some women at high risk for ovarian cancer. In fact, women with the BRCA mutations may consider both a prophylactic double mastectomy and a prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, since BRCA mutations increase risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (as well as other cancers). The cost of surgery in the United States varies dramatically depending on where it is done, but in general it is very expensive. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be put off by a seemingly too-tangled situation. Sometimes a simple procedure will unsnarl all the knots and get you in the clear fast and easy, just the way the Lamb likes it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to go through your work space -- wherever it is -- and see what needs to be replaced and what can be tossed (or at least given away) without a second thought. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Someone who disagrees with your position might try to intimidate you. But continue to present a fair argument, regardless of how petty someone else might be while trying to make a point. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might find yourself exceptionally sensitive to family matters this week. An issue could come to light that you had overlooked. Ask other kinfolk to discuss it with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have more questions about a project (or perhaps someone you’re dealing with on some level) than you feel comfortable with. If so, see which can be answered, which cannot, and why. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to clean up and clear out what you don’t need before your tidy self is overwhelmed by “stuff.” Then go celebrate the Virgo victory over clutter with someone special. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel a mite confused about why something you were sure couldn’t go wrong didn’t go all right either. Be patient. Things soon move into balance, exactly as you like it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) At this decision point, you could be moving from side to side, just to say you’re in motion. Or you could be considering making a move straight up. What you choose is up to you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your finances should be in an improved situation at this time, thrift is still the savvy Sagittarian’s smart move. Advice from a spouse or partner could be worth heeding. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking on a new challenge brings out the Goat’s skills in maneuvering over and around difficult spots. Best of all, the Goat does it one careful step after another. (Got the idea, Kid?) AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your well-known patience might be wearing thin because of a disturbing (and seemingly unending) problem with someone close to you. This could be a time to ask for help. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful about a new venture that lures you into a “just look and see” mode. Be sure that what you’re being given to see isn’t hiding what you should be seeing instead. BORN THIS WEEK: Aries and Taurus give you the gift of leadership and the blessings of care and concern for all creatures. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious.
Joyce Davies 170 Franklin St., Dansville, NY (585) 335-4750
PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.
38 years of experience in the Medicare market.
SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY When adopting more eco-friendly lifestyles, it can be easy for men and women to overlook their offices. While drivers can drive in ways that conserve fuel and homeowners can take steps to reduce their energy consumption at home, few people may give as much thought to making their offices more friendly to the environment. But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.
