RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Off-the-Charts Pain ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: Why is pain measured by numbers? I have severe pain, and doctors do not know what to do when I say it is an 11 on a scale of 1-10. My pain can’t be measured by numbers. It depends on the time of day, what I have done during the day and the weather. I have arthritis in most of my joints, specifically my spine and hips. Having had five spine surgeries, epidurals and hip shots, I have pain every day. There is not much more that can be done but to take opioids. It can be hard to make the decision either to take an opioid and go out shopping or for coffee feeling like I am in a vacuum, or to go out in pain. There is no chronic pain support group in my area, and no one can understand how I feel, even the professionals, unless they have gone through it. So when asked how I am, I say “fine.” Other people don’t want to hear about my pain. Why is there not another way the doctor can measure your pain? I have given up everything I love to do in life because of pain. There’s no way to get “better” from pain. -- M.L.D. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear your story, as it is similar to those I have heard before from people with chronic pain due to many different causes. It is disappointing for me to hear that you haven’t found a pain specialist in your area who seems to care about helping you. Although the 1-10 pain scale is thoroughly entrenched, it has its flaws. The biggest one is that what one person might consider a two, another person might consider a nine. I’ve seen people with horrifying injuries gritting their teeth and saying their pain is a 3 while other people claim their pain from what seems to be a minor condition is a 10 (I had one person tell me the pain from getting his blood pressure taken was a 10). Because pain is subjective, there is no way of standardizing what a person means with their pain rating. However, a 10 on a scale of 1-10 is supposed to be the worst pain imaginable.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father, 90, has neuropathy in his feet and legs, and it is very painful. He recently talked to a clinic that is offering stem cell treatment to relieve the pain. The clinic says it helps 85% of those who get the treatment; however, because of HIPAA laws, they don’t provide any referrals. The treatments are very expensive ($16,000), and results are seen in six weeks to six months. Are you familiar with this treatment, and is it effective for most people? Is this something you can recommend? -- D.B. ANSWER: I also have seen advertisements for stem cell treatments for many conditions. For neuropathy in particular, there are no good studies that give an estimate of effectiveness. It may be the case that 85% of people treated at the clinic report improvement. But the risk of a placebo effect is very high with this kind of procedure, and I could not recommend stem cell treatments for neuropathy without better information about the risks, the benefits and how long those benefits might last. ***

Letchworth’s Autism Nature Trail Wins Cellino Contest By Amanda Dudek
T
he highly anticipated Autism Nature Trail, to be completed within Letchworth State Park, has won a popular fundraising contest held by Cellino Plumbing & HVAC of Buffalo. Cellino holds this contest each year exclusively for the nonprofits of Western New York. Out of over 250 nominated nonprofits, the Autism Nature Trail (ANT) won the generous grand prize. Loren Penman, one of three ANT co-founders, described ANT’s path to victory through March and into April. “It is basically a popular support contest,” she shared. “People cast their vote for their favorite nonprofit. They are allowed one vote per round per email address to keep the voting as fair as possible.” After over 250 nonprofits were submitted, Cellino began what Penman described as a “March Madness” bracket type of voting. “Cellino started with the top 64 down to 32 to sixteen to eight to four and finally, to two nonprofits,” shared Penman. “It was especially fun for those who are usually involved with basketball’s March Madness, since that wasn’t possible this year.” The two top nonprofit finalists were ANT and Kirby’s Korner of Buffalo. “By the top 16, we became the only GLOW region nonprofit left in the competition,” stated Penman. That was quite an honor.” As the two finalists, Kirby’s Korner and ANT presented to Cellino Plumbing & HVAC via Google Hangouts, and Cellino’s staff members voted. ANT won the grand prize: one of Cellino’s brand-new, company trucks wrapped in an artistic design that features ANT, and this outstanding visibility is not all. “For one year, 5% of revenue from the truck’s profits will be donated to ANT which typically falls between $20,000-$30,000,” said Penman. “We are in the process of working with a graphic designer and Cellino. We are excited!” Penman is also pleased that ANT will be seen in Erie County. “About one third of Letchworth State Park’s annual visitors come from the Buffalo area,” she explained. “We are really thrilled. This was a big win.” Once completed, the Autism Nature Trail will consist of eight stations along an existing trail in close proximity to the Humphrey Nature Center within Letchworth State Park. These stations will include a Trailhead Pavilion, Sensory Station, Sunshine Slope, Music Circle, Curiosity Corner, Reflection Point, Meadow Run & Climb, Design Area, Playful Path and Celebration Station. The trail will utilize existing infrastructure, including things like bathrooms, shelters and Wi-Fi. Trail features continue to be developed by experts such as autism specialists, occupational and physical therapists, speech pathologists and special educators, to ensure that it will be a space everyone can enjoy and from which everyone can benefit.

Loren Penman presenting on the Autism Nature Trail at Letchworth State Park.
Besides its robust seventeen-member advisory panel, ANT has received advice and support from other notables, including well-known autism spokesperson, Temple Grandin. “She said she is not aware of anything quite like this anywhere, and she travels extensively,” stated Penman. “We are also working with architects as well as a natural playscape designer from Ithaca College. These incredibly talented people have been very generous with their time.” One of the challenges ANT has faced has been making the unpredictable outdoors more predictable. “The beginning of the trail is

also the end of the trail, and there is a pavilion at the beginning about what visitors are going to see as well as other explanatory features.” ANT will also have special personnel from Perry Central School District as well as Camp Puzzle Peace of Rochester. “We knew the park had its hands full already, so we did not want to add to their load.” For this purpose and to provide for the trail’s future, fundraising has been a crucial factor in developing the ANT, a vision which came to Penman and her two project co-founders six years ago. “We have raised $2.3 million of our $3.9 million goal,” shared Penman. “We want to provide for the creation of the trail and for an endowment so that it can be maintained in perpetuity. Once we reach our goal, our fundraising will truly be complete. We want everyone to be able to simply enjoy the trail without worrying about paying for it.” Funding has come from a wide variety of donors who realize how essential this trail is, such as a Notre Dame High School student in Batavia whose event raised over $4,000 and John Kutko, a 30-year TV sports anchor and incredibly talented photographer who plans to donate the proceeds from his 2021 calendar to autism and Letchworth. “People have really embraced it; they are behind us,” Penman said. “This pandemic highlighted how important it is to have the outdoors available to everyone, and we are seeing renewed interest. Families tearfully tell us that this is a great thing they can do together. Also, I recently had a conversation with the Sesame Street creator of Julia, a Muppet with autism, who hopes to integrate Julia into ANT!” Loren Penman encourages families living with disabilities to “look into the New York State Parks Access Pass, free to any NYS resident who has a documented disability, which includes autism, supporting families already struggling with other expenses.” For more information, visit www.autismnaturetrail.com or “The Autism Nature Trail at Letchworth State Park” on Facebook! The ANT will be participating in Giving Tuesday Now 2020 on Tuesday, May 5th!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Marigold Seeds How are you doing with your time-filling activities now that so many of us are locked up inside and told not to go out? Have you been able to complete any of your projects? Part of my plan to fill some of the hours in my stay-at-home time was to get a start on flowers for this summer. I planned to get a small seed starter kit and a packet of marigold seeds. I looked forward to seeing the little greenery coming up, a sign of life. My plan went nowhere. Where are all the marigold seeds? While I almost understand why the stores are out of bread and canned beans, who is buying all the flower seeds from nurseries and gardening centers? Granted, I only tried to order from locations in my growing zone, but still ... how can they all be out of stock? Learning how to solve the Rubik's cube didn't go well either, even with the help of multiple YouTube videos that promised to teach how to solve within 30 seconds. Not all my plans have failed so miserably, however. I did manage to finish three French lessons on Duolingo.com. Encouraged by how fast it came to me, I decided to read children's books in French as a way to learn more. The French Experiment (www.thefrenchexperiment.com) offers not only books in French but lessons. As I write this, there are still a handful of states where the governor has not issued mandatory stay at home orders. If you're in one of those states, pretend that you are under restrictions. Your job is to keep yourself healthy. To do that you need to stay at home. Imagine that every other person outside has the virus, because there's a chance that they do and no one knows it yet.
Common Warning Signs Of Arthritis Arthritis has name recognition, even among people who are not suffering from it. But despite that recognition, arthritis is not as well understood as one might think. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis is not a single disease, but rather an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. In fact, the term “arthritis” is so wide-ranging that it actually refers to more than 100 types of conditions. Despite that complexity, arthritis often produces four important warning signs, regardless of which type of arthritis a person may have. 1. Pain The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis-related pain may be constant or intermittent. One common misconception about arthritis pain is that it only occurs during or shortly after a body is at rest. However, arthritis-related pain can occur while the body is at rest and is not always triggered by an activity that incorporates a part of the body affected by arthritis. In addition, pain from arthritis can be isolated to one area of the body or affect various parts of the body. 2. Swelling Skin over the joints affected by arthritis may become red and swollen. This skin also may feel warm to the touch. The Arthritis Foundation advises anyone who experiences this swelling for three days or longer or more than three times per month to contact a physician. 3. Stiffness This warning sign is, along with pain, the one that is most often associated with arthritis, even by people who don’t suffer from the condition. Stiffness when waking up in the morning or after long periods of being sedentary, such as sitting at a desk during the workday or taking a long car ride, can be symptomatic of arthritis, especially if the stiffness lasts an hour or longer. 4. Difficulty Moving A Joint The Arthritis Foundation notes that people should not experience difficulty moving, such as when getting out of bed. People who experience such difficulty may have arthritis. People who recognize any of these warning signs should report them to their physicians immediately. Be as specific as possible when describing these symptoms, as specificity can help physicians design the most effective course of treatment.

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL TOWN RESIDENTS TO GIVE BACK Giving back to one’s community is a great way for men and women to make use of their talents and foster strong towns and cities. Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back.
For The Season May 3, 2020
Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies. Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms. Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers. Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with. Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company.

Small town residents may not have a wealth of volunteering opportunities at their disposal. But with a little creativity, such men and women can still give back to their communities.

Who ran to help me when I fell,
NOW HERE'S A TIP
And would some pretty story tell,
By JoAnn Derson
Or kiss the place to make it well?
* Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message.
My mother. ~Ann Taylor
HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

* “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas
BREEZE THROUGH SPRING CLEANING Use organizing tools. Over-the-door mesh shoe racks are great for storing all kinds of w inter accessories -- hats, gloves, scarves and coats. Get some sturdy hooks for purses, backpacks and other accessories, and relish the feeling of a clean closet.
HOW FAMILIES CAN CONFRONT
* Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles.
Remote Learning
* “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York * Pet treats for fish? Sure! If you have lettuce in your vegetable crisper, most varieties of fish would enjoy a nibble on a floating piece. Just make sure that you remove any uneaten bits after a day. * “Tired of waiting for that frothy head on your beer or root beer to go down? Stick your finger in it and watch it disappear like magic.” -- K.E. in Idaho
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules.
The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time. ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help. EXPLORE EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Many companies are offering free educational services while kids are home from school. Scholastic.com is offering online courses, Nat Geo for Kids, Fun Brain, PBS Kids, and Highlight Kids are other places to turn to for activities.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Currently, with all the problems that we have, it is good to know that there are good people out there willing to do good. We read or hear about scammers and other people who take advantage of others. Fortunately, they are the minority, even though it does not seem that way. This country is full of good people who are willing to step up and do whatever needs to be done to help their neighbors.
Regarding Painted Rocks. Let me vote for “Tacky”. My neighbor has them, and I get to see them daily. The public park is not the place for them. Keep them in your yard. Not everyone finds them beautiful. A rock in its natural state in a natural setting has a beauty all its own. A pink painted rock, not so much! available for gift ideas, we discovered a great local option. We ordered a custom sign from Metal Monograms and Signs in Springwater, NY. We found them in the Facebook Marketplace and thought that one of their signs would make the perfect gift for a friend. From the moment we contacted them, they were wonderful to work with making the experience easy and enjoyable. We loved that we could order a handcrafted in the USA sign locally and have it completed in a week at a reasonable price. They helped create a perfect metal sign that we know our friend will love and enjoy for many years. If you are looking for a unique creative gift for a special occasion, event or just want to advertise some love, one of their signs would be a great gift idea! it just makes my lawn look that much better. So, keep up with your yard no matter what, and take solace that you are doing what you should be doing. This is for all those people who have such huge egos that they are choosing not to wear masks when in public even though it is now a requirement by the state to do so. You may not care about your own health and well-being, but you have no right to threaten mine with your choices. I can only hope that you or your loved ones do not suffer with this dangerous illness or die from it! How hard is it to cover your nose and mouth when you are outside for a short time? You are nothing more than selfish people who have no concern for anyone but yourself. So sad! To all those people who are wearing the masks---thank you for caring.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. LAWN & LANDSCAPING ENERGY-SAVING TIPS Inspect heating systems at the start of each new season. According to EnergyStar.gov, heating systems account for 29 percent of the average homeowner’s energy expenditures. Inspect your heating or HVAC system before the start of winter, making sure all gas or oil connections are operating properly. EnergyStar.gov notes that dirty burners and cracked heat exchangers can cause heating units to operate less efficiently and may even pose a safety risk. Inspect the air filter of the heating system at least once per month, as filters can quickly become dirty during a heavyuse season like winter. Dirty filters cause the system to work harder to keep a home warm, unnecessarily wasting energy as a result.

One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose. DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
