Livingston County Economic Development Director, Bill Bacon, Sees Hopeful Future BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
Dansville public school teacher, was started to help restaurants during COVID-19, giving them a space to post about their menus.
“COVID-19 has caused business owners to rethink the way they do business,” stated Bill Bacon, Director of the Livingston County Economic Development, also referred to as the Livingston County Development Corporation (LCDC). The LCDC aims to encourage “transformative growth” within the local economy. According to Bacon, this isn’t just about the shutdown.
“Within two to three weeks, the page had over 5,000 followers,” Bacon continued. “The comments were unbelievably positive and supportive. People began seeing what is offered throughout the county and where, and others started asking for recommendations. It became engaging and interactive and took off like wildfire.”
here is little doubt that COVID-19 created one of the most challenging economic upheavals our country has experienced in well over half a century, and New York State has felt its effects, perhaps more than most. Several businesses, caught by surprise, scrambled to find ways to continue operating beyond their physical locations. Many of them have adapted and survived with plans to reopen stronger than ever.
“This is about figuring out how to serve customers if they cannot be inside your business,” he explained. “This is about figuring out how to reach customers, how to stay in contact with existing customers, and how to do business online and create a digital presence.” Admittedly, this is also about being prepared if a shutdown were to happen again. “Business owners are rethinking the financial aspects of businesses,” said Bacon. “They are thinking about the amount of capital they should have to weather downturns and crises. Struggles struck them on many fronts, from laying off employees and dealing with product spoilage to being unable to socialize with their customers. For some, this has been a nightmare realized.” Even so, Bacon believes Livingston County businesses can recover quickly, bouncing back even stronger. “I believe many people are ready to get out again, to shop and dine out,” he said. “People are understandably more cautious and safety conscious, and the LCDC urges business owners to show their customers that they have considered their safety during the reopening process.” The LCDC will continue to provide guidance and support throughout the reopening phases, yet it, too, is evolving. “At first, our goal was about information, conveying what we were able to gain from the state and making sure people knew where to go,” Bacon recalled. “We were providing guidance with the financial assistance coming out, what was essential and nonessential, and on into Phase I. Information was constantly changing.” As businesses began reopening in Phase I and Phase II, the LCDC’s focus shifted. “We needed to get short term capital to businesses in need of emergency funds,” Bacon continued. “So, we created small loans for them through our company, which we are still offering. As a county, our metrics are in good shape, and we are managing this crisis well. We are moving into higher phases, and we want local businesses to be ready.” If community support throughout this pandemic is an indication, area businesses have little to worry about. “We have seen incredible support for local eateries through the Livingston County Menus Facebook page,” Bacon shared. Livingston County Menus, a social media page created by a
As the county continues reopening, Bacon and the LCDC encourage everyone to support local businesses. “The best thing we can do to promote Livingston County Economic economic recovery is to think local first in any instance whatsoever,” he said. Development Director, Bill Bacon “Before you shop, ask yourself if you can make your purchases at independent businesses. These mom-and-pop places were the ones which had to close. It is worth an extra dollar or two to support them, keeping our Main Streets beautiful and our neighborhood economies strong.” Encouraging people to engage in downtown areas, the LCDC plans to implement its Inspirations Trail starting on July 1st. “The trail will have 70+ works of art in our communities, painted by local artists,” explained Bacon. “These are planned to be highly visible, displayed in retail stores, in storefront windows, restaurants and other businesses in Livingston County. Each has an accompanying quote, and our hope is to inspire while you admire.” Learn more at www.inspirationstrail.com. “I can’t see the future, but I do believe that as we come out of this crisis, Livingston County will be in a strong position for growth,” stated Bacon. “More people may now have the option to work from home, and they may be looking to leave urban atmospheres for cleaner air and great vistas. As many seek a happier, more fulfilling life, our county remains well positioned to provide one.” Enjoy this article? Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it? Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well. Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone
in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.
Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above. Linda Phillips, Master Gardener

SENIOR NEWS LINE
Cancer and COVID-19
By Matilda Charles
Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up. Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it. Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open. Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe. Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. Your second step will be to tell family and friends you're ready to start Zooming! (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus. Are all cancer patients at risk? Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems. What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Indoors or out, no one relaxes in March, that month of wind and taxes, the wind will presently disappear, the taxes last us all the year. ~ Ogden Nash
By JoAnn Derson * “It’s easy to get the stains out of coffee mugs without using a harsh cleaner. Try a little bit of baking soda on a sponge for scrubbing, then rinse with a little bit of vinegar to foam out the smell. I have been able to bring back mugs that looked terrible!” -- Y.S. in California

* Use a lint roller to remove dust from a lampshade with fabric that is flat but textured. If your lampshade has pleats, your best bet is a clean soft paintbrush. * “I have perfectly timed the fabric softener cycle on my washing machine. I set a timer for 23 minutes, and it’s just the right time to add liquid softener. Just saying that this has greatly enhanced the quality of my life, because my clothes feel softer and smell nice.” -- L.B. in Georgia * Here’s another laundry tip: “Can you believe I miss washing my daughter’s white softball pants because spring season was canceled? If you have a kid playing sports in white pants -- why? -- get a bar of Fels Naptha soap. You just rub it into the stained spots, and launder. It takes out grass and clay. It should be issued with the uniform for turf sports.” -- M. * A work from home, or work anywhere tip: If you are having trouble focusing, it might be because you are avoiding a difficult task. If there’s a dreaded task on your to-do list, tackle it first. Even if you can’t get it completed, you’ll make progress and it will make everything else seem easy by comparison.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Rare Disease Causes Hard-to-Diagnose Rash ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious. The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis. Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment. Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated.
Caring for you and the community since 2001.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently opened up some stored tuna that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food. When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway. Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite. The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat. ***

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY?
No insurance? No Problem!
Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons
(NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step.

Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

I would like to thank Tom who noticed my ad for a nice Small Business opportunity, who gave me a heads up, of laws in NYS (sinkers). Thanks again, R. Dupuis Every year, I get my lawn rolled. I want to thank both Nate and his father Kevin Harding. They not only do a good job, but they are also very nice. In this world, where it has become increasingly harder and harder to meet people who are considerate and personable,
In response to the person who wrote that they felt like they lived next to the Addams Family because their neighbors’ yard was overcome with buttercups and the grass is not cut the way they thought it should be: Really? Really? People are dying with the coronavirus daily, unable to breathe, and you are complaining about your neighbors’ grass? I pray you wake up soon to what really matters such as the Bible states--to love your neighbor as yourself--and pray for suffering neighbors all over the world. In response to Not Ego. The governor made it plain as

it is a delight to know Kevin and Nate. It is a plus when you find someone who not only does a job well done, but who also has a very nice disposition to go along with it. In all the years that Kevin and Nate have rolled my lawn, they have always been so kind to me, as well. Every spring I can rest assured that they will be by to do my lawn. That is how dependable they are. Thank you both so much! I really appreciate the both of you! Thank you to Green Renewable in Manchester. They donated thousands of bags of mulch, potting soil, and fertilizer to local residents. The donation of these items has helped to beautify our communities and was certainly very much appreciated. Thank you, Green Renewable, for your generosity!
could be today while he was in Rochester. It’s shear foolishness not to wear a mask when there is a strong possibility that you will be near someone. If you are walking alone in the woods, fine, no mask required. However, if you get where you may be in contact with someone, then by all means, you should be wearing a mask. How disrespectful to all the hard-working people in the medical field to be so unwilling to do so. They risk their own lives to save others. There were people in a parking lot the other day, in close proximity to one another. No masks! The governor was asked if people should be fined if not wearing a mask. He said, “Yes.” So, the person who wrote the original Rant did get the facts right. I suggest you do the same! In our town a family has moved out and left their cats. They come to my house and get my cat all upset. I know who you are. Also,

I was excited when I saw that I can now subscribe to have the Penny Saver mailed to me each week with my mail. I have been running out to the store first thing on Friday morning to make sure I pick up a copy of the Penny Saver before they are all taken. It is great to know I will not need to do that any longer, especially when the weather in the winter is bad. Thank you so much for starting this subscription service! Thank you to all the state, county, and town and village policemen and women. We appreciate the risks you take every day to keep us all safe. you do not feed them. They are feral by now. Cannot get near them. The one grey tiger is now limping on three legs. Do I have to call Animal Control and give your name? This is abandonment, animal cruelty! I feel so sorry for them. I cannot take them in. As I did one time with one of your cats which was a grey tiger. I even saw another one of your so-called pets get hit right in front of me and killed. Please take care of these animals. Their your responsibility! At least take the one to the vet. As I cannot catch them! This is cruel. They are God’s creatures too! This has been going on too long. I was told you were trying to catch them but see they are still around. Take care of them. This is in response to the post Messy Lawns. I suggest you read the post in its entirety. It was in response to another post. It was encouraging them to keep up with their yard no matter what, because that is the right thing to do even if

Amendment. Of course, we should condemn any violence, but 99% of the protesters are completely peaceful. When the protest is for something as universally beneficial as racial justice, then those who stand up for what’s right should be regarded as heroes, just like the Abolitionists, Suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of the past. Heck, the American Revolution was one big protest against injustice! Of the few hundred people at a protest in [local town], everyone was respectful, peaceful, and wore masks. Let’s take hold of this opportunity to improve our society together! I always enjoy driving around the Avon circle in the summertime. others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbor’s who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. The Governor said it loud and clear; when a person wears a mask, they are saying that they respect the other person. They respect the first responders, physicians, nurses, etc., who have been killing themselves to help others. It was said short but sweet, without any room for opinions. Medical professionals are not superheroes. They take care of those with COVID-19, yet they, for the most part, stay well. The Governor said it’s because of the masks and gowns. A mask is a necessary precaution. There is so much posted about liberty. Respect others! That’s what it should be about.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

General Mechanic/ Farm Worker:
WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
Hainsworth Farms LLC is looking for an individual to work across all aspects of our operations, including our grain storage facility, shop work and general farm operations as needed.
