STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

Mon-Fri: 8-4:30pm; Sat: 8-3pm

No business is too small to be a small business. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that microbusinesses, which are defined as firms that employ between one and nine employees, accounted for 75 percent of all private-sector employers as recently as 2013.

ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In a private Facebook group I belong to, someone is offering a pet for adoption, saying it belonged to their recently deceased mother-in-law. They want a $650 fee for “rehoming” the pet, because they say it has AKC registration. Is this a legitimate fee? It seems awfully steep. -- James in Burlington, Vermont DEAR JAMES: Rehoming fees are a fact of life for private pet placements, but $650 to simply adopt a pet is unreasonably steep. That isn’t to say that rehoming fees are a bad thing. A reasonable rehoming fee can prevent a pet from being adopted by people with bad intentions, who can’t financially care for a pet, or who are impulsively adopting a cute little dog that they might abandon at the first hiccup in behavior. The flip side is someone abusing the rehoming fee for personal profit. That person may claim that the fee offsets their costs of caring for the pet, but when the rehoming fee far outstrips the cost of adopting from a shelter, it’s time to proceed with caution. Find out what the local shelter charges to adopt a pet and ask online what average rehoming fees are for your area. If you’re interested in the dog, contact the offerer and find out as many details as possible about its breed, temperament, health and the environment it lives in. Do not send any money beforehand. You need to meet both them and the dog in person, and no money should change hands until both sides agree (in writing, ideally) to the rehoming. Further, if they are truly concerned for the dog’s welfare, they will have questions for you -- maybe even an application -- to make sure you are genuinely adopting the dog and will be a good owner.

Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!

A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia going through the checkout line, and my card would not register. The kind women behind me just inserted her card and paid for my groceries. I just want to thank her for her generosity and kindness. Thank you! I would like to thank Carrie DiCarlo from Perry Pet in Livonia Center for her graciousness during the loss of my pet dog, Abby. She was very kind and thoughtful during the whole process. She also sent a very nice card with a very nice sentiment. It is truly appreciated and touched my heart. It meant a lot to me. Many thanks, Cheri I would like to thank the person who turned in my debit card at the Dollar General in Livonia.

Last evening, our neighbor had eleven cars lined up along his driveway. We watched as unmasked guests walked into his home. Our Governor has put COVID-19 restrictions in place. It seems that this neighbor and his guests have other ideas. I wonder what the majority of people would think of this behavior. At the grocery store this morning, 5/14, thank you so much for stopping to point me in the right direction whilst I was pushing a stroller with one hand, the wheels turned the wrong way, and it began to move towards the

“enter” side. I had stopped and was attempting to convince the thing to go in the right direction, when you so kindly assumed that I could not read the “exit” sign or see the big orange road cones. Whatever would I do without people like you to take time out of their busy day to point their judgmental finger in the same direction as the arrow on the “exit” sign that’s right in front of my face so that I know which way to go? You can now rest easy knowing you saved lives today. Thank you, social distance warrior. You’re a hero. In my town, nearly everyone is taking COVID-19 precautions, and I’m fine with people wearing masks everywhere they go. However, there is a social network platform, and the people on there are in tinfoil hat mode. At one point, someone illegally took an illegal picture of some minors hanging at a park. They

It was truly appreciated and very honest of you. Many thanks and well wishes to you. A grateful citizen Thank you, Ontario County ARC, for bringing your clients out into nature and leaving painted kindness rocks along trails in powder Mills Park. The artwork and messages are beautiful. I want to thank the angel of a lady who was able to catch my dog on Boughton Rd in Bloomfield on Sunday morning June 21st. My car wouldn’t start, and I was trying to get my dog into a friend’s car as it was hot out. He got scared and bolted from the Boughton Park parking lot and started running down the street. I ran after him, but he was paying no attention to me. She stopped and was able to grab him. What an angel she was! I can’t thank you enough!

proceeded to post it and make such a fuss over them that the town decided to close all the parks. This is a whole new level of stupid, as no one would have gone to the park any ways. To the paranoid people who took and posted the picture, taking pictures of minors without consent by their legal guardian, let alone posting that picture on the internet, is illegal. For future reference, please refrain from criminal activity during bouts of stircraze. I am so sick of seeing how many terrified people are complaining about others not wearing masks. I served my country. I made sacrifices for your liberty and opportunity. Seeing how you discard that liberty without a thought makes me sick. I am free to choose mask or no mask, test or no test, vaccine, or no vaccine. My freedom is not bound by your fear. Dying is not too high a price to pay for the liberty and prosperity that will be my children’s

I would like to thank the LeRoy Village Police Department. We appreciate all that you’ve done. I cannot express how amazing you have been to our community! From stopping by a lemonade stand to showing up with snacks for a drivein movie, to turning on the sirens for a kid passing by, we thank you! A shoutout to the small businesses who have made this time a little more fun for our kids. Paint kits, doughnut and cookie frosting kits, wood flower projects, pizza making kits and more were a huge hit with so many! Thank you for thinking out of the box. We love supporting you! Thank you to our community for making our Graduating Seniors feel special during this crazy year! The banners, yard signs, parades, and adopt-a-senior programs have made them feel so honored. Congratulations Graduates!

inheritance. If you don’t like it, you stay home! The COVID-19 lock down has found many of us struggling financially. Perhaps when this is over, we should all take the time to look at our household budgets. Did you have 60 or even 30 days of cash set aside for a rainy day? Ask yourself do you really need the newest cell phone, the largest flat screen TV, a satellite antenna with those extra pay-per-view channels? Did the local car dealer make you feel so happy and proud to buy the biggest SUV they sold for an extra $49 per month for another 365 days? Maybe the next time the government tells you to sit home for eight weeks with a mask on your face, you can afford to pay for the necessities of life. In the meantime, hide behind your stash of toilet paper when the landlord comes looking for the rent. In God We Trust; the rest pay Cash. Stop complaining.

Perkinsville Fire Department Chicken BBQ

an Overwhelming Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n recent months, “cancelled” has become an all too familiar word. Events of all kinds have been postponed and cancelled during our ongoing fight with COVID-19. For the Perkinsville Fire Department, however, serving the community cannot be put on hold. “When the coronavirus hit, we still had our Easter and Mother’s Day breakfasts planned as well as our Ham and Beef Raffle, but we couldn’t hold any of them,” explained Fire Chief Walt Drum, Jr. “Our Fearless Hook and Ladder #1 of Perkinsville helps support our fire district with funds to aid in the purchase of fire equipment. Our donations to the fire district help to keep the taxes down low.” This volunteer fire department has been serving the community for a long time. Established in 1892, the Fearless Hook & Ladder #1 of Perkinsville has been looking out for area residents for 128 years. Raising money for the needs of the fire department, such as a fire hall, has been a priority since its inception. In 1971, the Ladies Auxiliary was founded and participates in supporting the fire department, as well. After many years of hard work and sacrifice, the Perkinsville Fire District was established in 2012 to include the Loon Lake area as well as Perkinsville, and its average number of calls has risen from 42 to 75 a year. “We cover an area from County Line 63 to the Fremont Townline,” said Drum. “We also contract with South Dansville to cover a sliver of their area, and we participate in mutual aid calls in nearby areas such as Wayland, Dansville, Sparta, West Sparta, Cohocton, and Fremont.” The fire department responds to calls regarding fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical calls requiring EMS and could be called upon to assist with water emergencies due to their coverage of Loon Lake. “It is so important to keep taxes down in the Loon Lake area which is taxed more heavily,” explained Drum. “We work well with the Loon Lake Association, providing fire and EMS support during their fireworks displays. They have been very good to us over the years.” When this worthy local institution decided to hold a Father’s Day drive thru chicken BBQ at the Perkinsville Rod and Gun Club to raise support, the community showed up in droves. “We sold 572 heads of chicken and had them all cooked in a little over two hours,” shared Drum. “We are grateful to Seneca Foods for donating vegetables for these meals.” Orders were placed online and through call-in ordering. “It was our first time, so of course, there were some bumps, but we now, we are better prepared for next time,” Drum added. “Retired, active and junior members all pitched in, and it went very well!”

This 1940s photo of Perkinsville Fire Department volunteers still graces the walls of the Perkinsville Fire Hall!

“She bought two dinner and gave us a donation, as well. She has been very supportive of local fire service and things like that, which is wonderful to see from someone in her position.” Assemblywoman Byrnes had previously awarded Perkinsville firefighter Gerry Kiesl with an award for his many years of service. “I think it is important to support our local fire departments at their chicken barbecues because they do so much for our communities on a volunteer basis,” said Assemblywoman Byrnes. To Drum, events like these allow the Perkinsville fire department to continue serving a deserving community. “We are purchasing a new engine which is replacing one that has seen 27 years of service,” he explained. “Our commissioners, who live all over our community, are very good. I cannot say enough about them. They are the best group and so supportive, helping us get what we need.” “We have been here since 1892,” he continued. “Now, our town essentially has two churches, a post office and our fire hall, but we are still here to serve, protect, and help in anyways we can. We have a good membership, great vehicles and a find bunch of officers. Our juniors also truly help out and do a phenomenal job. It isn’t easy. It requires a lot of training and hands-on work, but if we can keep even half of them, we are doing pretty well.”

The BBQ even attracted the attention of New York State Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes who stopped by. “I saw Assemblywoman Byrnes as she was pulling away,” recalled Drum. Enjoy this article? At-Home Allergy Shots? The Risk Is Too High --DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it. Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school! This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home? Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe. The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions. The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did lightintensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates. The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time. It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Someone late for dinner? To keep potatoes warm without drying them out (as would happen in an oven), set their serving dish in a larger pan of hot water and cover. * “I use a small plastic bowl as a scoop in my big bag of potting mix. It’s a good amount to pot a small plant, and I can hold my pot over the bowl to save the soil.” -R.F. in Oregon * Give your buttons a boost! Use clear nail polish to strengthen the strings holding your buttons in place. Just a drop on the face of each button, and let dry. You’ll never know it’s there, but it definitely helps. * “Remember this old trick when camping: Use salt to keep ice cold and slow the melt. In fact, I salt the ice in the cooler whenever we use it, camping or not!” -- G.L. in South Carolina

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Page 28

* Challenge your school-age kids or grandkids to a “word scavenger hunt” in the daily newspaper. You can have them search for words relating to a particular subject, or have a contest to see who can find the most unusual or complex words. It gets them reading and looking! Preschool-age kids can use a magazine to do a scavenger hunt for certain items, like colors, animals, kitchen items, etc. * Mark a reusable water bottle with time measurements so you’ll know if you are drinking enough during the day. WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line.

We’re an independent community health center and we serve everyone regardless of our patients’ ability to pay. Spanish language skills a huge plus!

The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall. NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career.
