GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD THE M OVIE M OGUL: Some dads simply can’t get enough of the silver screen, and a streaming service that allow s dad to w atch many of his favorite movies on demand from the comforts of home might make the perfect gifts for film-loving fathers.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you love a good BOGO deal, you’re not alone. Oftentimes, for items like condiments or staples, this means you need a place to put it until it’s time to use. For items that are safe to store at room temperature, find a place that it out of direct light, and is cool and dark. But avoid lower cabinets that are close to the stove or dishwasher, as these can get quite warm.
In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours. ~ Mark Twain
Call 315.791.7197 to Reserve Dinners TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Adjust as you go. Even the best plans need to be modified on occasion. Keep an open mind and be flexible so you can enjoy any unexpected wonders that may pop up. Flexibility also can help you adapt to traffic or detours.
* Tackle the nitty gritty around knobs and crevices of your kitchen appliances with a toothbrush! Just dampen it, add a bit of baking soda for a gritty scrub that won’t scratch, and then dip it in dish soap to cut through grease and grime. * “Want your readers to last longer? Keep them in a fabric pouch when not in use. You can attach a keychain ring to a fabric pouch and hang that from a lanyard worn around your neck if you want to keep them on you. Reading glasses bump into many things and can get scratched easily, so protect them.” -- F.J. in Florida * Maybe you’re not putting miles on your vehicle like you used to, but don’t neglect your car! Take some time to get your car’s interior looking great so she’ll be ready when you get back on the road. Give the upholstery a good cleaning. Bust out the detail brushes on your vacuum or shop vac, and give leather and plastic surfaces a wipe down with a protectant. * Never scrub a cast iron skillet. It needs the patina in order to heat food evenly. Here’s how to keep yours operational: Clean with a stiff brush and regular dish soap. Rinse clean, and dry immediately, preferably by placing it on a warm to hot burner for a few minutes. When dry, rub with a light coating of oil. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.
• Residential/Commercial Paving • Gravel Driveways • Ditching/Drainage - Established 1950 -
Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

PEST CONTROL
How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant.
STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Games that can
challenge the brain
ŽŶĂů ,ĞĂůƚŚLJ >ŝǀŝŶŐ ůĂƐƐ Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game "Clash of Clans," making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways. · BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and x retention. · Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then x find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www. happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. · Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. · Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www.braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games.

JUNE 2020 “When???” We know the burning question is, “When will the library be open again?” We’re very sorry, but the answer is --- “We still don’t know the date yet!”
“June Amidst the Pandemic” Please take note that the Library is indeed getting itself ready to reopen! There is an amazing amount of preparation involved and preparations more complicated as staff is not yet allowed to work in the building. So, we continue to work from home, attending virtual training sessions and GoToMeeting gatherings for staff and reopening discussions. We have been ordering new materials throughout this shut down. At last, we are receiving them! Shipping was suspended due to staff reductions at publishing companies and book suppliers. Our library’s orders for new materials were delayed for weeks! But now many titles have been added to the OWWL catalog, and as soon as we are in the building, we will finish processing and shelving materials where they will be waiting for you! When the Library does reopen new procedures will require you to wear a mask and maintain social distancing of 6 feet. There will be hand sanitizer available, and direct contact will be avoided. You will see us in mask and sometimes gloves, hand sanitizer at our sides. We are doing our best to protect each other and all our visitors from virus transmission. Group meetings will not be permitted in any area or meeting room in the early stages of reopening. Reading tables will have a one-person limit, and access to public computers will be limited as sanitizing the equipment between uses is mandated. Please be patient as we comply with our Phase 4 reopening guidelines. We know how difficult this is. We will let you know when the book drop will be unlocked. We will announce when you will be able to borrow materials as soon as we are permitted to provide this service. Clearly the first day of summer --- June 20th ---- will be here BEFORE we are open for business. We are so sorry this long delay.
This page is sponsored by:
Please continue to borrow downloadable materials from OWWL2Go. Remember you can contact us at dansvillelibrarydirector@owwl.org. We recorded a message on the answering machine as no one has been at the library to answer your questions. We ask for your patience as we comply with the recommended guidelines in the Phase 4 process. New policies and procedures are required. Please rest assured that your health and welfare, as well as that of our staff members, is uppermost in our minds.
“Ms Mary Ellen Prepares for Summer Reading” Summer Reading will have a new look! Children will start by picking up their Summer Reading kits to take home. There will be crafts and “goodies” to encourage our youngest readers to keep up their reading skills during the Summer and to have FUN! Watch for information from Ms Mary Ellen. Please fill out the registration form on the Children’s Website Page at dansvillelibrary.org
“1000 Books or 1000 Hours?” Ms Mary Ellen continues to register preschoolers, even babies, to participate in 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Children who are read to early in life are more likely to be successful in school than children who aren’t surrounded by books. Contact us a dansvillelibrarydirector@owwl.org to register. During this pandemic we are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors. Now you and your children can participate in 1000 Hours Outside. Keep a record of the time you spend at parks and hiking or picnicking with family at 1000hoursoutside.com. Download the free “tracker” page to keep track of your activities. This site includes many suggestions for outdoor learning by age group. Thank you for waiting with us during these challenging times. We are looking forward to being with you again soon!

They gave the full measure of devotion. They are honored each Memorial Day in the month of May. Veterans are honored on Veterans Day, November 11th each year. November 11th was formerly called Armistice Day.
I retired after 40 years in the Graphic Arts. I look forward to your publication and appreciate the work you produce. Thank you and stay safe. - Tom The definition of “Veterans” is “One who has grown old in service; one who has served in a war. A Veteran is one who has serviced his (her) term of service - hence the term Veteran.” The service men and women who are honored on Memorial Day are those who did not survive.
During Earth Week, my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several fresher, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!

A very special thank you to Elizabeth from Aaron Manor Nursing Home in Fairport. Elizabeth goes above and beyond in the kindness that she gives to the residents of Aaron Manor and their families. She is always kind and upbeat and willing to help anyone no matter what the circumstances. I have not been able to see my mom for the last two months because of this horrible pandemic which makes us as a family very stressed along with my mom who cannot understand why we cannot see her. Elizabeth keeps us updated every day. No matter how many times we call she is always willing “Give me liberty or give me death.” If you don’t practice social distancing, stay at home except for necessary things, like grocery shopping, etc., or wear a mask, then one day those words may end up having a literal meaning. You may very well succumb to the coronavirus and find yourself or someone you really love fighting for their lives. Do you balk at having to wear a seat belt? We are fighting a dreadful disease the likes of which many of us have never dealt with. Practical advice, such as wearing a mask when you may be in contact with someone else, is necessary to avoid the spread of this virus. Safety is a must, just like putting a seat belt on when you are in a vehicle. While shopping at [local store], I was pleased to see all the shoppers wearing masks. Most were also following the arrows and distancing guidelines. As I was about to leave, a couple came in with their two beautiful young school-age daughters. None of them had masks. What

to spend as much time as needed answering the many questions we have. Aaron Manor is very lucky to have such a wonderful person working for them. - A Very Grateful Family The Avon Lioness Club “2020” Scholarships Fundraiser Gas Raffle Winners are 1st Prize - Linda Lee (Florida), 2nd Prize - Rebecca Owen (Avon) and 3rd Prize Corrine Aquilino (Caledonia). Redeemable at “Quicklee’s” or any Mobil Gas Station. Thank you ALL for your support and donations. Avon Lioness Club Celebrating “35” Years of Service to our Community! I enjoy the GVPS and look forward to receiving it. Nicely designed, printed and informative. Good Job! - Thanks, Joe I’d like to take the time to thank the mask makers, the food will this mean to the girls? I’m sure they were met with unkind stares, if not words. How would their parents explain this to their children? How sad for the girls to not be taught common courtesy, respect nor personal hygiene. How sad to think that it will be the responsibility of their teachers to have to do this when schools reopen! Doctors and nurses are risking illness and death to treat the sick. Are these parents minimizing this, as well, by teaching their children indifference and callousness to others? With the heart-wrenching reports about young children dying from the coronavirus, it is truly disgusting that some only care about their socalled rights. Some people just don’t have common sense and only care about their rights, that is, until it’s their grandchild that gets sick from this deadly virus. “Give me liberty or give me death.” Watch out what you ask for. I guess you don’t believe in washing your hands more often and not touching your face. I guess that goes against the grain of your precious liberty. It is so stupid. I wouldn’t advertise how
Page 21
deliverers for others, the nursing home staff, the firemen who drop off gloves and masks, the grocery store workers, the people in the neighborhood doing good things for others, the rock painters, the creative posters for stressed out mommies who can do fun activities with her kids because of you, the news broadcasters showing high school graduations, the bank tellers, the take out restaurants, the crisis hotline, the therapists, the professors, and so many other heroes out there. Thank you. I see you, and I appreciate what you do to help us keep calm and sane during a time of chaos. Our thanks to the two bag pipers who were at the village cemetery in Churchville on Memorial Day. You played the hymns of the military services along with Amazing Grace. Your music carried throughout the entire cemetery.
you fought for others’ liberties with the way you rant. It’s just common sense. Look at the unselfish acts of kindness many have shown, and learn a lesson in compassion, something I’m not hearing from your comments. I can’t believe all the comments about wearing masks and how it interferes with your rights and liberty. Others also have rights not to be contaminated or infected by people who refuse to do the right thing. What a laugh! Never mind your liberties, treat people the way you would want to be treated. What a shame for all those who have worked relentlessly to save the lives of others infected with the virus! A person can have the virus without any symptoms. It’s just the right thing to do unless you have some medical condition that prevents you from wearing one. The more people rant about their liberty and rights, the more sickening it gets. Hopefully, you never get the coronavirus, but better yet, that you don’t spread it to anyone else.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Outdoor Fun With Pets While Social Distancing --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Even though stay-at-home orders have been lifted in my state, we still have to social distance when out in public. Where can I take my dog, “Blake,” that isn’t too crowded? The beaches are already filled with people. -- Staying Safe on the East Coast DEAR SAFE: After so many weeks stuck indoors, it’s natural that people are rushing to get outside into parks or next to the water. That not only is a safety concern when trying to keep the spread of the new coronavirus under control, but also for dogs who may be stressed by so many people or feel threatened by other dogs. If the beach is Blake’s favorite spot, the best way to maintain social distance (and give him more room to romp around) is to go at times when few people are there. That means going as early in the morning as possible, if you can, hitting the beach at sunrise, and heading home before too many people start arriving. The same strategy applies to dog parks and outdoor recreation spots. Even trails in my area that I thought of as remote, or not very popular, are crowded with day hikers struggling to pass each other on the narrow paths. You may need to do what I did, and switch to an early morning weekday schedule when fewer people frequent these public areas. Once the outdoor play time or hike is complete, and before you hop back into the car, wipe down Blake’s outer coat and paws with a clean cloth, checking for scratches or ticks. That way you won’t bring home any other potential pathogens. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Christine White of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver to be Recognized as One of Rochester’s Finest BY AMANDA DUDEK
O
n Monday, May 25th, Christine White, ad consultant for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, received word she had been nominated for and is to be recognized as one of Rochester’s Finest. Each year, the Rochester’s Finest initiative – a program of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – honors an exceptional group of young professionals for their leadership, success, and commitment to positive community impact. Christine, who grew up in Bloomfield, earned her BA at Empire State College before she and her husband settled in Honeoye Falls. Passionate in her desire to help others achieve success, White quickly excelled in her position with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, advancing from assisting advertising consultants to becoming one herself in less than a year. She currently works out of our Batavia office. “Throughout my education and career, I have always enjoyed helping people, being there for them, and supporting their success,” says Christine. “When I first started as an assistant, I quickly realized how much I enjoy developing relationships with people in our communities. Creating effective marketing campaigns and using our paper’s incomparable local presence to help business owners reach their goals is very satisfying.” Advertising not only gives her the opportunity to advance local businesses, but it also provides many opportunities for community involvement. “I enjoy attending local events, being involved with area businesses and being a part of the community,” Christine explains. “It’s not uncommon for local fire departments, the YWCA, agricultural societies and other businesses and organizations integral to our communities to visit the Genesee Valley Penny Saver offices for their advertising and printing needs. Working here makes me feel like a part of the local environment.” She continues: “When I am helping a not-for-profit, I am supporting a cause, and when I am assisting a company, I am helping a local business owner have the tools they need to be successful,” she continues. With her attention focused on her work, Christine was caught completely off guard when she was nominated for Rochester’s Finest. “When I found out, I was completely shocked,” she recalls. “I was nominated by this company just as I am about to celebrate my one-year anniversary with them this June. I was not seeking recognition, but I am so pleased to know that the company sees how hard I am working and how focused I am on my customers.” Christine looks forward to the support and professional development she will receive as she makes a difference in area communities with Rochester’s Finest. “I am excited to be a part of the seminars and activities as well as meeting new people and strengthening existing relationships,” she says. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an incredible organization, and I look forward to working with them.” Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF

funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices. A rare, genetic disease, cystic fibrosis (CF) affects every organ and produces breathing difficulty. In those with CF, the defective gene Christine White, ad consultant at the causes a thick buildup of Genesee Valley Penny Saver and nominee mucus in the lungs, for CFF’s Rochester’s Finest pancreas, and other organs. Trapped bacteria in the lungs due to mucus clogs subsequently lead to life-threatening lung infections and just over 60 years ago, a much shorter life expectancy. World leaders in the search for a cure, CFF was founded by parents whose children have CF. At a time when the life expectancy for a child with CF was around six years old, these parents brought passionate determination to the fight for their children’s lives. Their relentless determination has resulted in tremendous advances in treatment, care, and advocacy. Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

Does a CPAP Machine Need Special Cleaning? ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in the early 1990s and have been using a CPAP machine ever since. I’ve just recently begun seeing advertisements on television for a product that cleans the inside of your CPAP machine. It is common knowledge that we must clean the facial mask, hoses and other external parts of the machine on a regular basis, as well as changing the filters, but I have no recollection of ever having been informed by any of my sleep specialist doctors that the inside of the CPAP machine requires regular cleaning. I also do not recall ever seeing any instructions regarding this in any CPAP manual. I notice that this new CPAP cleaning machine costs approximately $250-$300, and I have already read a few reviews posted by people who have had lots of problems with it functioning properly. Is it really necessary to clean the inside of your CPAP machine? I’ve never been informed of this in all the years I’ve had sleep apnea, and I have gone through several machines. -- C.P. ANSWER: A CPAP machine is a pressurized device used mostly for people with obstructive sleep apnea. I also have seen these advertisements, but a review of the literature suggests that there’s a very low risk of infection or allergic reaction due to a dirty machine, mask or hose. Although the cleaning devices do work, I could find no evidence that they are necessary or offer any benefit beyond regular cleaning with soap and water. This should be done regularly. Filters should be changed every two to four weeks. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: If you have had hepatitis B, are you able to donate anything (e.g., blood or organs)? I was never diagnosed with the disease, but I tested positive for the antibodies during a blood donation over 30 years ago. Someone recently told me that I can still donate plasma. Is this true? I signed up on my driver’s license to be an organ donor. Should I uncheck that box? I don’t want to endanger anybody unknowingly. -- J.S. ANSWER: Antibodies to hepatitis B may be developed during natural infection or through vaccination. A doctor can tell which kind from a blood test, by determining whether the hepatitis B core antibody is positive. People who have had natural infection (a positive core antibody) may not donate blood or plasma. People who have been vaccinated (the surface antibody is positive, but the core antibody is negative) may safely donate blood and plasma. As far as transplants go, before considering using a person’s organs for transplant, the transplant team checks for the presence of active virus with sophisticated DNA testing. The likelihood of your endangering someone is low. There is such an organ shortage that organs often are accepted from people with a history of viral hepatitis. For example, the medical team taking care of a person who is likely to die imminently without a heart transplant may accept the heart of a person with a history of hepatitis B infection. The person receiving the transplant likely would need antiviral treatment after surgery. Don’t uncheck the box. Your organs may help extend the life and sight of many people. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Water helps the gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.
