Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Move plants when possible. Plant location can affect their chances of surviving summer heat. Driveways lined with flowers or other plants may look nice, but driveways exposed to the sun can radiate heat at temperatures that exceed the temperatures noted on the thermometer. If possible, move plants to locations on your property that are less exposed to the heat and/or less likely to be affected by the heat. Move container plants beneath trees on hot days, and consider summer heat waves before planting new flower beds.

(NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes

No Annual Maximum

Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Give Back And Feel Rewarded

How To Stay Positive While Social Distancing As recently as late February, much of the populations of the United States and Canada were living life as they normally would. A few short weeks later, when COVID-19 began to affect a greater number of people, many businesses grinded to a halt. Schools were closed to students, and governments instructed people to stay home as much as possible. “Social distancing” quickly became part of the general lexicon, with people in many cities and towns staying six feet apart from others when venturing into the public, but mainly staying at home. While it is still too soon to determine the lasting impact of COVID-19, the psychological effects of social distancing were apparent almost immediately. Anyone who has had some trauma in the past may discover that social distancing rekindled previous traumatic feelings. Any form of isolation can be devastating to a person’s mood because they are left with their own thoughts. Various strategies can help to ease the potential psychological burden of social distancing and give people a new perspective on their situation. • Focus on the positives. Look at what you have gained rather than lost from social distancing. This may translate to more time with the family; opportunities to exercise more; time to engage in a hobby; or chances to finish up projects around the house. • Get fresh air. Where laws allow, make time daily to get outdoors, even if it’s for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Seeing new sights can be good for the mind, and exercise is also good for the body. • Establish a routine. A routine helps anyone feel more in control, which is helpful when so much of the consequences of COVID-19 are beyond individuals’ control. Get up and go to bed on your typical schedule, eat meals at regular intervals and make time for different activities each day. • Reach out to people. Social distancing does not mean you have to cease being social. Contact friends or family on the phone, through video chats or even speak with them at a safe distance in person. If you need professional help, many therapists now offer telehealth therapy sessions. • Turn off the news. Take a break from the constant onslaught of information. This can reduce stress and anxiety and allow the brain to focus on positive thoughts and ideas. • Express gratitude. Give thanks for what you have each day and try to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Social distancing has been a trial for everyone involved. Certain strategies can help turn grief into gratitude. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

One positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. A SPECIAL THANK YOU! I want to give a special thank you to the “greeter” I had at Walmart on June 30th. His name is Bob. When he saw me walking with a cane, Bob immediately took my arm and helped get me a riding cart. Bob was so gentle and caring. He blessed my whole day! He also helped me when I came out. Walmart is very blessed to have such a man as Bob working for them.

CLEANLINESS IS THE BEST PREVENTION Wearing masks is really a false sense of security, as touching your face is the more real danger if you don’t wash your hands with soap and water. So, it doesn’t matter if you wear a face mask or not if you don’t use prudent cleansing whether you are out in public or not. Wash your hands! I have seen restaurant workers not washing their hands before touching others’ food orders, so the real danger is lack of cleanliness. neighborhood has to hear, even during the day. Please understand that your neighbors have their own lifestyles, which are likely very different from yours. My taste of music is different from yours, and by the time it makes its way inside my home, the sound is very distorted and sounds horrible. I am trying to work, sleep, read, or watch TV over here, which is a very basic right I have as a homeowner, but your music is making it impossible to do the things I want to do. Please don’t put me in the uncomfortable position of having to talk to you about it. I’ve tolerated it without saying anything because I try to be a good neighbor. It’s not right, and you’re not being neighborly, considerate, or thoughtful. Actions affect others.

That reminds me of an old saying from a comedian, “Here comes the judge.” At least the skit was funny when the comic said it. Your post made no sense whatsoever.

ABOUT THE WOMAN I am not saying people shouldn’t go out. I am addressing those who aren’t wearing their masks in public, only come into the store for one thing, are rude to other people and employees, and are being jerks. I am an essential worker. I get it. You have to work, but I work at a grocery store, so I hear talk like this all the time, and I overheard her. Shame on you all who defend her, and you yourself are offenders. We’re back to where we were in March and not flattening the curve because you’re bored and need to unnecessarily go out. Do some other activities at home or walk down your road. So, thanks. This is obscene! it isn’t progress, only gouging, and ditto electric windows and doors. ROAD RAGE I was on a main road during this time out in the country not on a bumpy country road where I want to wreck my car by going 60 through potholes and bumps. On the main road that links to these country roads however, it is not illegal to go five mph over from 55 to 60, especially when I’m terrified the person behind me is so close they’re a hair’s breath away from causing an accident. That’s not speeding, and it’s not necessary to go 70, 80, 90, 100 down roads, main roads or country ones or back roads. Just stop.

CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“You’re Leaving?”

Supporting your Furry Friends when You Return to Work BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

s Finger Lakes Region businesses continue through the phases of reopening, many pet owners who have been working from home are or soon will be returning to their places of employment. While humans are sure to miss their fourlegged or “winged” companions, they experience the process differently, understanding what is happening and why, while their furry or feathered friends may not. Taking steps to prevent your pet from experiencing anxiety, recognizing the signs if anxiety does occur and knowing how to help your pet adjust will help you have peace of mind when returning to work. Prevention: It’s All about Planning! Most pets feel calm and comfortable when they know what to expect. If you know the routine to which you will most likely be returning, you can begin taking steps to make your furry friend’s transition easier. Plan these routines around the schedule you will have when you return to work and adjust your pet to the new routine gradually. • Feed your pet at the same time and place every day. • Many animals, like dogs, require at least 20-30 minutes of daily exercise to reduce boredom and maintain a healthy body weight, so plan a walk and playtime at the same time each day. • Find alternatives to leaving your pet chained outside or indoors penned, crated and isolated for long hours. • Continue training your pet, as knowing what to do can help prevent stress, as well. Recognizing Signs of Stress Research indicates that stress, especially constant sources of stress, can impact pet health and well-being. Animals experience stress for different reasons and exhibit stress in ways that set them apart from one another and their human companions. The following is a breakdown of what may be signs of stress in birds, cats and dogs. • Birds: It can be challenging to determine what is causing stress in birds. However, the appearance of stress bars on feathers, the sudden onset of aggression, fearful behavior, changes in appetite, and destructive behavior can indicate that stress is present. • Cats: Cats can become stressed over situations their owners may not consider major. Some of the easiest stress symptoms to spot include excessive self-grooming, urine spraying, aggression, extreme vocalization, and eliminating outside of the litter box. • Dogs: The British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s “Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioral Medicine” says that some of the most common dog stress triggers are novelty, housing changes, loud noises, changes in household members, and changes in schedule. Dogs may exhibit stress through appetite changes, isolation, digestive issues, lethargy, and increased sleeping.

Stress-Busting Solutions for your Pet • Encourage independent play to reinforce the lesson that your pet will have to busy itself with toys from time to time. • Many dog-related problems result from ill-established leadership roles in a house. Constantly reinforce your role as pack leader as knowing the pack order can relieve some canine stress. • Exercise may help reduce anxiety, and exercise, discipline and then affection are the common mantras of dog trainers. • Don’t make a fuss when coming or going. Be calm and consistent, and only reward desirable behavior. • Provide comforting items, like worn clothes that smell like you. • Consider employing a dog walker or a pet sitter for less strain and stress on your pet as well as increased exercise opportunities. • Take another look at pet daycares! This care option can reduce boredom, improve pet socialization, increase exercise, help your pet relax and develop a more well-rounded temperament, and many locations have flexible care plans. • Talk to a vet if separation anxiety has gotten out of control. Temporary administering of a sedative may help pets and their owners as the dogs continues to be trained. Pet parents should be aware that there can be a transitional period as pets acclimate to their new routines. House training regression as well as other undesirable behaviors may occur, requiring some retraining and rule reinforcement. As many pet owners will emphatically confirm, evidence suggests that animals such as cats and dogs experience emotions, so be extra patient and loving towards your furry companions as they adjust to your absence. 2. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses. John E. Adamski July 11, 2020 Dansville: At age 77, John passed away peacefully at his home in Dansville with his family by his side on Saturday, July 11, 2020. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Adolf and Emily Adamski. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Judd Adamski. Survived by his children, John (Michele Atkinson) Adamski of Brighton, NY and Jennifer Sagran of Ridgway, Colorado; and his grandchildren, Emily Adamski and Noah Newman, along with his many close friends, beloved dog Daisy, the Judd family, and his beloved extended family.

Many know John as the founder of the Finger Lakes Museum where he served as the Board President until 2015. He had a passion for the outdoors, which was shown through his lens as a photographer, as well as his writing as an outdoor author for many magazines and newspapers. John was a successful architect and homebuilder for many years. He designed many homes in the Rochester area, as well as in the Finger Lakes region. He loved fishing and was a charter boat Captain on Lake Ontario for over 10 years. Most of all, John loved sharing stories about his wildlife encounters and adventures in person or through social media, where he posted multiple times a day. We will miss his stories. Friends and Family are invited to call on Thursday, July 16, 2020 from 3-6PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye. A memorial service and inurnment will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made to: Finger Lakes Museum, www. fingerlakesmuseum.org. RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Free Entertainment To help us stay away from the mainstream news that has nothing but disturbing commentary and visuals, I've compiled a list of more upbeat places to investigate online. Best of all -- they're free! Games - Do online searches for your favorite games to play on your computer, such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, mahjong and vintage Pac Man, Myst and Donkey Kong. (Use "classic games" or "retro games" as your search terms for the old ones.) Language classes - Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is the best language learning site I've found, and you don't have to pay anything! They keep track of your progress and move you right along once you've mastered a section. At this point there are over 30 languages you can study. Classic TV shows - See if you have MeTV (www.metv.com)on your cable TV lineup. It shows all classics. You'll find "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Twilight Zone," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Flintstones," "Wagon Train," "The Waltons," "The Carol Burnett Show," "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason" and much more. Check the website for the shows and schedule for your area. Vintage music - While you're on the MeTV website, click Music at the top for free vintage tunes. Or you can search in a browser for "free online music" and find dozens of vintage music archives. Even Gutenberg has free music, everything from Bach to Irving Berlin. However, you need to listen to only one at a time on Gutenberg.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Blaze” has figured out how to lift the lid on the kitchen trash can. He’ll hop in there at any opportunity to get at the food scraps. I don’t want him eating those, and I’m worried he’ll get sick from raw or spoiled food. How can I stop this behavior? -- C.J. in Santa Monica, California

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

Cat Raids Trash Can for Kitchen Scraps

DEAR C.J.: I know that’s annoying! Cats are opportunists, escape artists and seemingly expert lockpickers that will take every chance to explore something that smells interesting. A trash can filled with food scraps is often irresistible. Once a cat has figured out where all the good table scraps are, it’s going to be very hard to train them out of that particular behavior. You can still try some deterrents. When you’re in the kitchen and see Blaze creeping toward the trash can, hiss loudly and say “Nyah!” or “Leave it!” Or, keep a shaker can filled with pennies within reach and shake it at him when he approaches the trash can. When you’re not in the kitchen, Blaze may still keep trying to get into the trash can. For now, bungee or tape down the lid so that he can’t pry it upward with his paws. Then, look for a trash can that has a locking lid, which will be much harder for your cat to lift up. This will be a huge help at night, when you can’t rush into the kitchen to try and stop Blaze from his nighttime raids. Best of luck, and remember to be patient and consistent with deterrent training methods. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

By JoAnn Derson * If you go to a yard sale and an item catches your eye, don’t be afraid to haggle. If the owner can’t agree to your price, give him your name and phone number. If it doesn’t sell, he might be ready to accept a lower price. * “You can sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your porcelain sinks for a non-harsh scrub. It serves a double purpose, because it will also freshen and absorb odors, then get washed right down the drain!” -- M.M. in Texas * Wash and save yogurt cups for kids to use for painting. You can set several in a jelly roll pan to keep them together and upright. * “I have a beautiful glass window in my front door. Unfortunately, once a day, the sun comes streaming through it and seems to magnify. I have a couple of hooks that are backed by suction cups. I can hang a garden flag from the hooks to cover the window. Sometimes I even use it at night for privacy. It still looks pretty from the other side if I don’t take it down, and it didn’t involve any holes in my door!” -- W.D. in Kentucky * Make-up bags make the perfect place to stash extra cords and accessories for your computer or other devices. Put them in a basket and all your tech will stay orderly.

NOW HERE'S A TIP

* Car Wash Tips: Use a soap that’s made for vehicles, because it’s less likely to strip the protective coating off your paint. Don’t wash in full sun if possible. If you must, then work in small sections to keep soap from drying on the car. Rinse off your sponge regularly -- the dirt and grime can scratch the surface. Use a microfiber cloth to dry. Page 35
