Extend the life of your vehicle:

Scale back on short trips.

The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate.

However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler.

Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle.Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle andimproveyourfuelefficiency aswell.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

Although raking leaves may not be the average homeowner’s favorite activity, it is a healthy one. Various muscles are worked when raking, which also is a good form of cardiovascular exercise. In fact, a person who weighs 180 pounds can expect to burn more than 350 calories raking leaves for an hour.

Livonia Autumn in the Village Leaps to New Heights of Family Fun

Congratulations to the Autumn in the Village

On Saturday, September 10th, Autumn in the Village returned to Livonia a er a two-year Covid hiatus. is festival is held every year on the second Saturday of September by the Village of Livonia and is organized by a volunteer committee. In 2001, Autumn in the Village began as a way to recognize village businesses and to thank them for the patience they had shown during extensive Routes 15 & 20A renovations.

“During the rst festival, people were having a good time, and we thought, ‘We need to do this again!’” said Mayor Lathan.

Since then, the festival has grown tremendously to include children’s activities, arts and cra s, food, live music, what the Mayor calls “the biggest parade we have all year long,” and, this year, the rst annual cornhole tournament, and much more! According to Mayor Lathan, the focus of the festival is on activities for children. Admission and these activities are all free of charge. e festival also o en includes a fundraising element.

“ is year, we were so lucky to have A&R Beauty Bar put together a haircut-a-thon to help a Livonia teenage boy who is battling leukemia. ey are the unsung heroes, our shining star,” shared festival committee member Jo Ann Weber.

“Autumn in the Village is always a success when kids and families come out,” Weber said. “ at is what makes the ten months that we put into planning all worth it. It is a community working together.”

Herbal Product Can Help Soothe

Gastro-intestinal Symptoms

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had gastroparesis for many years. About two years ago, it led to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (which I once read about in your column). I worked with a dietician for several months. One of the treatments she suggested was an herbal product called Iberogast. The combination of herbs helps the stomach to empty quicker. I use it each night before bed (as part of a 12-hour fast), or whenever I have overeaten and feel bad. It has been most helpful for me. Iberogast is available online. -- L.E.

ANSWER: Iberogast is a combination of nine medicinal plant extracts. Studies in Germany and Austria, where it is most commonly used, have shown the medication to be more effective than the placebo (and about as effective as one common prescription medication) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel disease. The medication has generally been regarded as safe, but there are rare cases of liver injury associated with this medication, with at least one of which eventually requiring a liver transplantation.

All medications -- whether prescription or overthe-counter, natural or synthetic -- have the potential for harm. Iberogast is pretty safe, with just a handful of bad outcomes in its 50 years of use, involving millions of doses, but it can still cause rare and severe adverse effects. Iberogast is worth considering in people whose symptoms have not been successfully treated with other therapies.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility.

Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

to Care for Animals

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We can’t have pets in our apartment, but I want to teach my children about responsibility and compassion for animals. Are there volunteer opportunities for kids out there? -- Jessica in Seattle

DEAR JESSICA: ere certainly are volunteer opportunities for kids in most communities. e hard part can be nding one that will work for your kids, t in with school schedules and provide the kind of rewarding experience you want them to have. PAWS.org, for example, has several volunteer opportunities in the Lynnwood, Washington, area. e shelter doesn’t allow kids under 18 to work directly with animals, but it hosts a special Day of Service for those 10 or older to help spruce up its dog trail, and hosts a PAWSwalk each summer. Kids also can choose to “donate their day” -- ask for donations to the organization in lieu of birthday presents, for example. at’s just one organization in one area. Kids and parents should search for local shelters and animal-rescue organizations to see what volunteer or fundraising opportunities are available. Another, more immediate opportunity may be right in your neighborhood. Do you have friends or neighbors with pets? Are they willing to let your kids visit and play with their dog or cat? Is there an elderly relative or friend who needs help walking their dog or taking their cat to the veterinarian? Remember that, as the parent, you’ll need to supervise your kids for many of these events or pet-care opportunities. But you’ll be giving them key tools to be awesome pet owners of the future.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* “Gigi” author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette could only write after she had plucked all the fleas off her cat.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Necklace chains that have turned dark due to oils in your skin can be washed in warm water with a dab of shampoo mixed in. Also, keep your old earring backs -- they might fit a different pair if one gets lost! -- M.F. in Washington

* To freshen the color of carpets (and destroy moth larvae or flea eggs), liberally sprinkle salt on them before vacuuming. I use a cleaned out Parmesan cheese container for this. It works very well. -- J.K. in Pennsylvania

* To clean the glass inside your oven door, use the stovetop cleaner for your glass stovetop. -- V.P. in Florida

* Use cold, salted water to defrost a chicken for roasting. You will have very flavorful and moist meat. -- E.D. in Kansas

* Save plastic lidded containers from the kitchen. Cover with colorful duct tape, and they can be used as storage or even as gift wrapping.

* Disposable razors can be used to remove burrs from sweaters or wool slacks. Just be sure to keep it out of the reach of children. -- O.D. in Tennessee

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES

Sponsor a local youth sports team: Youth sports team sponsorships are a relatively inexpensive way to create brand awareness. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, Inc., reports that sponsorship costs vary from organization to organization, though they may cost as little as $100 to around $5,000 for the season. In return for that investment, businesses gain exposure to athletes, athletes’ families and friends, volunteers, and countless others who may see players in uniform on game day. When compared to the cost of advertising online, on television or on the radio, youth sports sponsorship provides a great return on investment.

SENIOR NEWS

Free College Courses

In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. e good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. e other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university.

It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. ey make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.”

Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want a er downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certi cate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities.

For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA.

Read the ne print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take.

If you de nitely want to attend in-person college but need nancial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information.

Note: e Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

WAYS TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity and monitoring calories can keep weight in check. The Mayo Clinic recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity. Strength training at least twice a week also is recommended. Being overweight or obese increases a woman’s risk for breast cancer.

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER

Consider cross-promotional events. Cross-promotion is a marketing endeavor in which two or more businesses work together to promote a service or product. For example, a local brewery may partner with a local restaurant to showcase a new beer release and a special menu item that pairs well with that particular beer. These types of promotions shed light on what each business can offer, and many consumers would be happy to learn they’re supporting at least two local businesses at the same time.

During the past week, Putin’s renewed threats of the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine have many concerned. Some feel it is a valid threat; others believe it is a hollow intimidation attempt as Russia continues to lose face in the world. Do you think Putin would actually push the nuclear button against Ukraine?

• Yes, in a heartbeat

• Yes, but only as a last resort

• No, but he will cause devastation

• No, it’s an empty threat

Poll Ends 10-04-22

Poll Results 09-27-22

According to reports, Ukraine states it has retaken about 3,088 sq. miles during the month of September, a space roughly three times the size of Rhode Island. Do you feel this is the beginning of the end for the Russian occupation of Ukraine?

0% Yes, Ukraine’s victory is near.

39% Yes, but it will take time.

46% No, the war will continue indefinitely.

15% No, Russia will completely occupy Ukraine.

There will be no designated routes and the street department will try and check the entire village when they are out. If they do not get to your leaves on one day, they will do their best to get to them in the following days.

Also, once leaf pick up begins, brush pick up will end until Spring.

APPLE PICKING: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.

RAVES

Thank you, Livonia!

Thank you to the wonderful businesses in Livonia NY for sponsoring Autumn in the Village. My grandchildren from Syracuse look forward to this wonderful festival as do I. This family friendly event is making memories for this Grandma and Papa!

Deepest Thanks

On August 13th at about 12:45pm, there was a horrible car accident on Route 19, just north of LeRoy. Many people stopped to help. The man in the car behind me came immediately to see if I was “all right.” The neighbor across the street came, bandaged my hand, let me use her cell phone to call my daughter, and put my frozen foods in her own freezer to preserve them. A wonderful friend who happened to be passing by, stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Many passersby stopped to give the police an accurate report of what had happened. Most of all, I am deeply grateful to all the police, including the State Troopers who showed me great concern and protection. They were superb. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways.

- Rosemary F.

Thank you, Teachers!

Thank you to teachers and staff for making the start to this school year so fun for the students. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again!

Thanks, Coach!

Thank you to girls’ soccer coaches for all your hard work and positivity! Go Braves!

Grape Fest Praise

Kudos to the Naples Grape Festival for once again providing a wonderful festival with something for everyone! With the weather cooperating as it did, it turned out to be the perfect day indeed! I hope that you had fun if you attended; I know that I did!

Vulgar Signs on Property

I have noticed in our town as well as other towns that people displaying signs on their property with vulgar words on them. Please think about others before you display foul language for the world to see. Are you helping make the world a better place, or are you adding to the abundant filth that permeates our culture? There are so many children who travel by your homes every day and have to see these awful words that they should not even know...but now do because of you. Please remove these offensive signs and show some respect to others. Help make the world kinder instead of adding more turmoil to it.

No Trash because of "Rotten Apples"

Some public areas don’t have bins because cheap [people] use those receptacles to avoid their weekly household trash disposal fee. The result is a double whammy: abused opportunity means “no public bins,” then ground litter accumulates for lack of handy receptacles! I live near a rural park without any bins, just a sign declaring a “carry in, carry out” policy. This policy is often ignored, so on my walks, I pick up the resulting roadway trash and pay for its proper disposal since others won’t accept responsibility.

Poor Service!

We certainly enjoy supporting all of our local businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. On a Saturday a few months ago, we received in our mail a coupon to [a local establishment]. When [we went to use it and] the clerk rang up my order, it was full price. When I had this new coupon, our [clerk said we couldn't] use our coupon. I requested the manager to void one [item]. She said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the owner's name, and the manager said, "I don't know. Look it up on Google." How unprofessional and rude! When businesses are struggling all over this country, [this establishment] won't even honor their own coupon. It's a sad day. We are very disappointed in this local business!

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to housealaptopduringtheday.

Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.
