ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Professional relationships grow stronger. But you might still need to ease some problems with someone in your personal life. One way could be to try to be less rigid in your views. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be too close to that perplexing personal situation to even attempt to make a rational decision about it right now. Stepping back could help you gain a wider perspective. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being asked to choose between the positions of two friends is an unfair imposition on you. It’s best to reject the “demands” and insist they try harder to work things out on their own. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change of mind about a workplace decision might be called for once you hear more arguments, pro and con. A personal event suddenly takes an unexpected (but pleasant!) turn. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance once again looms large for single Leos and Leonas, with Cupid favoring Taurus and Libra to inspire those warm and fuzzy Leonine feelings. Expect another workplace change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A surprise gift -- and, happily, with no strings attached -- could come just when you need it to avoid a delay in getting your project done. Expect education to dominate the week. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone close to you might ask for your support as she or he faces a demanding personal challenge. Offer it, by all means. But be careful you don’t neglect your own needs at this time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected development could put your relationship with a partner or spouse to an emotionally demanding test. But your determination to get to the truth should save the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent agreement appears to be coming apart over the surfacing of unexpected complications. You might need to have expert advice on how to resolve the situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your keen business sense helps you get to the truth about a suspicious business deal. Expect to have many colleagues rally to support your efforts in this important matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone who once moved in and out of your life through the years might now want to come back in on a more permanent basis. Give yourself a lot of time to weigh your decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing frustration over a delayed workplace decision might get someone’s attention, but not necessarily make him or her move any sooner. Best advice would be to be patient and wait it out. BORN THIS WEEK: You are drawn to excitement and enjoy fast-tempo music, with the more brass, the better. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

www.hometn.com

For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

Farmers Give Back Project Prepares to Feed Families for Its 13th Year By Amanda Dudek well.” The project also looks beyond the numbers. “Most charities require people to show that they receive government assistance if they ask for help; we don’t,” Jodi explained. “Every person has needs for different reasons.” 2018 was their biggest year yet. “Last year and the year before, we reached 7 counties,” said Jodi. “This included donating to homeless shelters, food pantries, churches who do food kitchens, Friends Feeding Friends out of Buffalo and vans that travel to homeless encampments.” Beau Teed Farm hasn’t forgotten its neighbors either. “We try to find people to give to in Livingston County, too,” Jodi said. “We are very proud to have helped 32 families last year.” Jodi & Steven St n Teed with produce duce for f the Farmers Fa Give Back Project. Proje

J

odi Teed of Beau Teed Farm has given us yet another reason to thank local farmers. In 2006, Jodi Teed began what has become the Farmers Give Back Project. For the past 12 years, Jodi and Beau Teed Farm have provided produce and meat products to area food pantries as well as directly to families in need. “My husband and I bought this farm 20 years ago,” said Jodi. Jodi’s family has a strong background in farming, and her husband had worked on a neighboring farm throughout high school. “We started growing and raising our own food, and when we had extra, we would donate it to places like the Open Door Mission in Rochester and the Honeoye Food Pantry. We just kept adding places!” Jodi explained that giving really opened her eyes to an ongoing need. “Places like food pantries have needs I didn’t expect,” Jodi shared. “For example, it is right after Thanksgiving that many food pantries are hit hardest. Also, food pantries do not often receive fresh food,” she added. “A lot of the donated foods are canned.” This realization led Jodi and her husband, Steven, to redouble their efforts. “We started donating more and more,” Jodi said, enthusiastically. “After we would pick and sort food, selling Grade A produce to stores and restaurants, we always had plenty of good produce left over.” Beau Teed Farm began donating chickens, turkeys at Thanksgiving and loads of produce. Things really took off when the idea caught on with other area farmers. “I remember it was Giving Tuesday,” said Jodi, referring to the philanthropy-focused Tuesday following Thanksgiving. “We had received a message through Facebook which featured Bill Gates asking, ‘What can you do to make a difference?’ That really resonated with me.” Jodi said she immediately called up a farmer friend in Elba and explained how her Farmers Give Back Project works. They were eager to participate. “We sent a truck over there, and they filled it up!” exclaimed Jodi. Jodi recalled another generous farm, DeGroff ’s of Castile, which offered them squash. When they arrived, they found 80 bushels of it. “By that Saturday, I had all kinds of vegetables from all over Western New York,” added Jodi. The Project only continued to grow from there. “We donate all kinds of fresh food from our farm,” said Jodi. “Including fresh veggies like potatoes that last well in cold storage. The Monks of the Abbey of the Genesee donated 600 loaves of bread,” Jodi continued. “Marquart Farm brought us several pallets containing over 1,000 bags of family size potato chips. Star Growers, owned by long-time friends, the Starowitz family, donated, and we received apples from two farms. Another farm, owned by the Casper family, donated beef.”

Area farmers have also stepped up generously. “Last year, we had people throughout 7 counties contributing just because we made phone calls asking for help,” Jodi stated gratefully. “DeGroff donated over 100 bushels of produce last year. Monks Bread works with us, and they are awesome,” Jodi continued. “They always help us with charity bread whenever there is a need. In addition, Casper’s Farm donated several boxes of packaged hamburger to us.” Jodi said there are so many additional farms and friends who have donated and participated, and while they cannot name them all, they are so grateful for people’s outstanding generosity.

We are making a difference!

“We provide a great opportunity to learn about growing healthy produce,” added Jodi, passionate about food-related education. “We - Jodi Teed also help families learn how to cook it. We now include recipe cards in our food packages, especially for things like cabbage,” Jodi said. “We even put together a small recipe book this past year.”

“Our biggest need this year is volunteers,” shared Jodi. “My husband works, and I have physical limitations. We really need more help.” This year, Jodi hopes the Farmers Give Back Project will grow even more. “We are looking for people to help with planting, weeding, picking, gardening, tractor maintenance and food delivery,” Jodi explained. “We need weekly and biweekly help throughout the growing season. The hours are extremely flexible. We have seeds that have already been donated to get us going this year. We are making a difference, and we would like 2019 to be our biggest year yet.” For more information on the Farmers Give Back Project, please call Jodi Lyn Beaumont Teed at (585) 313-3219. TIME IS MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO CAR MAINTENANCE (NAPSI)—Whether changing the oil, replacing the wiper blades or checking the tires, finding the time to perform simple preventative vehicle maintenance is money in the bank. According to research conducted by automotive market research firm IMR Inc., one out of three consumers who put off routine vehicle maintenance do so because they cannot find a convenient time. In addition, millennials and those who own older vehicles are more likely to delay routine maintenance. Expert Advice “There is an old adage that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making time to perform routine auto care not only ensures a safer, more dependable vehicle, but car owners can preserve the trade-in value and save money by addressing small issues before they become more complicated, expensive repairs.” What You Should Do The most common maintenance procedures to keep a car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air-conditioning. An annual tune-up and wheel alignment are also good ideas. Where To Get Help To make it easier for car owners to remember to include auto care in their busy schedules, the Car Care Council offers a free custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service. This simple-to-use online resource can be personalized to help make auto care more convenient and economical. In addition, the council’s popular “Car Care Guide” for motorists is available at no charge, electronically or by printed copy, in English and Spanish. The guide covers major services, component groups within the vehicle, service interval recommendations and much more. The council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Some paint and sip events allow guests to bring their own alcohol, while events held at bars or restaurants may provide alcohol for an extra cost.

The Risks And Rewards Of Multilevel Marketing (NAPS)—Many retirees and others looking for extra income consider what’s known as multilevel marketing (MLM) or network marketing. It’s a type of direct selling where products are purchased from a company and sold through independent contractors. These contractors make commissions from what they sell, and from sales made by people they recruit. It doesn’t always work out the way they hope, however, according to a new survey from AARP Foundation, the affiliated charity of AARP. A few facts and hints may help: • Among the more than 20 million Americans who have participated in MLM organizations, 90 percent got involved to make money. • Nearly half lost money. • A quarter made no money. • Two-thirds would not join the same or another MLM organization again. • 39 percent stopped participating because it felt awkward to pitch to friends and family. • Four out of 10 say the company misled them about their chances for financial success. • MLM participants are primarily women with college degrees. • One-third were recruited by a friend and 12 percent by a family member. “We have witnessed many of our constituents joining these organizations, sometimes to their financial detriment. We want consumers to become better educated about MLMs before they invest valuable time and resources,” said Amy Nofziger, Program Director with AARP Foundation. To help, AARP Foundation suggests these four things: 1. Set your expectations and understand the costs. Recognize that MLMs require patience, persistence, and an investment of time and money. Make sure you’re clear on what you expect to get out of participating and what’s expected of you from the MLM. 2. Do your research. Thoroughly investigate the company. Visit the websites of the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission to see if there are any complaints about the company. Speak to current representatives and recent participants. Conduct an online search of the company name featuring keywords such as “work hours” and “incentives” to see what others are saying. 3. Get comfortable with selling. How do you feel about having business conversations with close friends and family? 4. Can you afford startup costs? Are you OK taking risks with your money? Learn More For further tips, resources and educational videos, and to download the toolkit “Multilevel Marketing: The Research, Risks and Rewards,” visit www.aarp.org/MLMaware. Beore you take up network marketing, there are a few steps to consider. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

“Making our community beautiful one smile at a time.”

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

‘Burning’ Tattoo Forces Halt to MRI

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please explain how an MRI machine affects the pigment in a tattoo? My friend’s MRI procedure was stopped because she was experiencing a burning sensation at her lower eyelids, which had previously been tattooed with black ink. Does this happen only with black ink? Which colors are safer? -- J.H. ANSWER: Reactions between the ink in tattoos and MRI scanners are well-documented in the literature. Some inks -- mostly black, red and brown -- are made with iron or titanium oxides. Only 1.5 percent of people with tattoos have reported bad experiences in MRI machines. Iron and titanium oxides conduct electricity, and the strong magnetic field in an MRI scanner can cause a current to travel between different tattoos or different portions of a tattoo -especially those with loops in the pattern. The electric current causes heat, and even can cause minor burns. Cold packs or ice placed on the area during MRI can minimize damage, but some MRI facilities will not perform an MRI on tattooed individuals, especially if the tattoo covers a large area. If a magnet draws up the skin with a tattoo, then that area is at risk.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with transient global amnesia. I had never heard of this. My primary care doctor sent me for further testing, which included an MRI and MRA with contrast, and a CT scan. All were normal. Can you elaborate on this condition? -- M.T.M. ANSWER: Transient global amnesia is a cause of retrograde amnesia (“retrograde” meaning you don’t remember things from the past, usually the past day to a month, but sometimes longer; “anterograde” means memory loss forward from the time of the event). Its cause is unknown, but it occurs more frequently in men and women over 50. Your doctor ordered the appropriate tests to make sure it wasn’t a transient ischemic attack or stroke. Epilepsy sometimes can look similar to TGA, so sometimes an EEG is obtained. As scary as it sounds, TGA usually doesn’t happen again and doesn’t predict a higher risk of developing memory troubles, stroke or epilepsy in the future.

well. Her doctors are treating her with the standard medications. She has heard about an experimental treatment where they take her stem cells and make them into something that is inhaled. Have you heard about this treatment? Is it safe? Each treatment is $7,000. -- J.W. ANSWER: Stem cells are cells that can develop into many kinds of mature cells. In theory, they can grow and replace cells that have been damaged or destroyed due to a disease process. Stem cells hold great promise for many diseases, but there isn’t enough information for me to make a recommendation for stem cells in COPD, for either safety or effectiveness. If you are going to look into it further, I would recommend doing so only as part of a clinical trial. You can find out about clinical trials at www.clinicaltrials.gov. I was able to find some trials on the site that are recruiting subjects. I also would recommend www.closerlookatstemcells.org/ to anyone considering stem cell treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

We have gone to [local store] in [local town] for years. They hire many new young cashiers there frequently. Most of the workers are polite and kind. A month ago, my husband and I were in line and there was a new young female cashier attending. When we reached the front of the line, my husband had walked clear away from the register where I was paying for the items. The cashier turned clear around to him with her back to me and gave him an inappropriate flirtatious “hi”, turned back around to ring up our items and

Our sincere gratitude and thanks to those who offered their assistance at Eddie O’Brien’s restaurant in Canandaigua last Sunday. My husband suffered a sudden seizure and lost consciousness due to a recently diagnosed medical condition. We wish to thank the restaurant staff who quickly called 911 and the kind and caring patrons at the next table who offered their comfort and support. The Canandaigua Emergency Squad arrived quickly. They were wonderful; professional and caring while transporting him to the hospital. We deeply appreciate your help.

To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday:” I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! Political correctness is insensitive to the majority of us Americans.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Scottsville, NY • 585-538-2328 WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER Communicates clearly: Team players effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. This includes using language that is constructive, honest and respectful.

Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
