Hello, I'm I was adopted almost 8 years ago, when I was 8 weeks old. I am a mixed breed cat. I am a real sassy-pants in all ways. I don't really enjoy being picked up or cuddled. If someone picks me up or I feel like getting into trouble, my pupils increase in size so much there is only a very thin ring of my actual eye color (yellow). Although I do enjoy gentle headbutts. My favorite pastime is napping, and I LOVE cat treats! :)

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Trainers can recognize environmental factors affecting pets that owners may not see. Pet owners may think their homes are pet-friendly or conducive to housebreaking pets. But trainers may see things the untrained eye won’t. Anything from the location of a parrot’s cage to the designated litter box area for a cat can affect pets’ behavior, compromising pets owners’ efforts to housebreak their animals. Trainers can recognize potential problems that may have relatively simple solutions.

Sudden car trouble is something no driver w ants to experience, but many a driver has been driving dow n the highw ay only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it c ould be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. W hen car trouble strikes w hile a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is c ertainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But w hen a car’s tank is full and it is still show ing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protec t themselves, their passengers and their vehicles. AUTOMOTIVE

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
Whether you are buying, selling or relocating, we can help!

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.
*Income restrictions apply. Brookside Apartment
www.coniferbrookside.com brookside@coniferllc.com 585-394-2010 2883 CONIFER DR. • CANANDAIGUA
The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Growing up in 1940’s Honeoye Falls by Tom Sargeant – with commentary from brother, Bob Sargeant (italics)
W
e lived at 43 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. The house is still there. Next door lived an old man who on the 4th of July would bring out a portable crate with his rocket launcher on it. He could send a portable rocket across the street and over the American Legion Hall. There were no fireworks allowed (or available) after 1941. In 1942, after World War II started, we began working for the local farmers who would send a truck by to pick us up and take us to the field where we would be working. My first job was for the Moses Nursery in Lima, NY. We picked up gladiola bulbs, and he paid us $.45 an hour. We picked up potatoes and picked up and shucked corn. We were paid 10 cents per bushel. For a full day’s work on Saturday, you could make $5.00. We picked corn for K.C. Livermore, large potatoes for Chauney VanVoorhis, and at the Harwood Martin farm, we had to detassel four rows of corn and leave the tassels on two. The farmers always paid us at day’s end in cash. The Birds-Eye Snyder Factory in Avon, NY hired a team of ten of us from the high school. They also hired the school coach, Lou Basil, to be our leader. We got this work because the parent of one of the students was the Vice-President at Birds-Eye. Our principal had a Victory (produce) Garden. My brothers and a few other kids worked there. We weeded onions and carrots. My oldest brother and I and the other big kids were paid 30 cents an hour. My brother, Bob, who was a bit smaller but worked just as hard, was paid 25 cents an hour.
There were a few stations available but not 24-hour programming like we have today. Listening to the radio was a daily ritual, especially at dinnertime – Jack Armstrong (The AllAmerican Boy), Captain Midnight (send a box top in for the secret code ring), Terry and the Pirates, the Green Hornet, and Gang Buster and Inner Sanctum (What mystery lies behind the squeaky door?). We went to an air show at the Woodward Airport, a private family-owned airport owned by the owners of the Jell-O factory Tom Sargeant & his father. in LeRoy. The Circular Hill Road jalopy races were also held near LeRoy. This was a natural amphitheater – people sat on the grassy hillside. Summer days were spent down at the creek swimming, turning rocks over for bait and sometimes fishing. In the woods behind the house, we had a rope swing in a walnut tree. On a rainy day, we would make a dam in the culvert in front of the house. Evenings, we might get enough kids together to play softball, tag or capture the flag in the park downtown. Winter days [were spent] ice skating on the creek, skiing down a hill or in the street. Maplewood Avenue was a side street and nice hill to use our sleds on. I remember once skating on the road surface as black ice made it possible. Brother Bob and I also put the chairs up for the Saturday night band concert at Harry Allen Park. Uncle Alex would give us each 50 cents. We would go to the movies for 18 cents and buy a soda after the movie for 15 cents. Then, we would go back, put the chairs away, turn out the lights and lock the door.
Tom Sargeant at 80-years-old standing beside the same cart he and his father used
In the year 1942, after the war started, I collected one ton of scrap iron from Honeoye Creek. I received a “V” for Victory with the number 42 on it from my school. My mother sewed it on a sweater for me. We also collected cardboard and newspapers and sold them to the scrap men for three cents per pound. We collected milkweed pods. The filmy matter was used in life vests and jackets to keep flight crews and Navy men afloat. When I was 9 years old, my father taught me to weld. In 1946, my father was contracted to modify water tanks in a number of schools in Western New York. On our first day, after we finished the work, we returned home by way of Dansville Hill. My father was worried about getting down. We had an old International pickup truck with mechanical breaks. We started down the hill. Dad shut the engine off and put the truck in low gear. By the time we got to the bottom, we were going 50 mile per hour. Wow! Whew!
In a barn on our property, my dad repaired farm equipment and made plow points for farms. We used that barn for a carnival we put on one time. There was a haunted house, costume show and games. Many kids came. Some kids later told me that they were disappointed we only did it once. The house at 43 North Main Street and the barn were great – the greatest – places to be during those years. Note by D. E. Bentley, Editor of Owl Light News: Tom Sargeant (b. May 20, 1933) and his family, including his brother Bob Sargeant (b. August 2, 1934), grew up in Honeoye Falls, NY. (Article in greater length originally published by Owl Light News on August 11, 2017).

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.
1. Heartland riders 4-H group teamed up with the Caledonia Tractor Supply for a pet photo shoot with Santa! 2. Happy New Year! 3. Heartland riders 4-H Santa poses with a furry friend at the Tractor Supply in Caledonia! 4. Missing those fall colors
“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.”
We Want Your Photos!
He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year.
SPORTS • EVENTS CELEBRATIONS VACATIONS
Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1932, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway had been appointed earlier to fill the vacancy left by her late husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway. * On Jan. 11, 1949, on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., the cornerstone is laid at the first mosque of note in the United States. The Islamic Center was complete with a 160-foot minaret from which prayers were to be announced.
Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020; Women Report Feeling More Stressed By Its Effects (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant.
* On Jan. 10, 2008, Tata Motors in India debuts the Nano, billing it as the world's cheapest car. The bubble-shaped mini-vehicle had a base price of $2,000. It had a body made of plastic and sheet metal -- and one windshield wiper.
GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one.

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That lower-thanacceptable performance you’re getting from others in your group might be the result of miscommunication. If so, correct it before serious problems arise later on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected situation could call for a change of plans. If so, you might feel that this is unfair. But it’s best to make the needed adjustments now. There’ll be time later for rescheduling. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The new year brings opportunities you might want to look into. Some might be more interesting than others. But take time to look at all of them before you make any decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good idea to be careful about expenses until you’ve worked out that pesky financial problem. You might find it advisable to get some solid advice on how to proceed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance looms large over the Leonine aspect. Single Lions looking for love should find Cupid very cooperative. Paired Cats can expect a renewed closeness in their relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making contact with a former colleague might not be high on your list of priorities. But it could pay off personally as well as professionally. Avoid bringing up any negatives about the past. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A personal relationship could face added stress because of a situation involving someone close to both of you. Be supportive and, above all, try to avoid playing the blame game. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might well find some lingering uncertainties about a decision. If so, take that as a warning that you might not be ready to make that move yet. More study would be in order. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Music is a dominant theme for Sagittarians right now, and it should remind you to make a greater effort to restore some much-needed harmony in that very special relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters might demand much of the Sea Goat’s attention this week, you’ll want to try to make time to handle those all-important workplace situations as well. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recurring unresolved issue might need to be revisited before you can move forward. Consider asking someone familiar with the situation to act as an impartial counselor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Ignore pressure to make a decision. Keeping your options open is still the wisest course, at least until you’re sure you’ve learned all you need to know about the matter at hand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re capable of great loyalty to those around you, which is one reason you can count on devotion from friends and family.

Allow for adequate time to warm up. Failure to warm up is another contributor to exercise-related injury. Before diving into a workout routine, spend between five and 10 minutes warming up your body with some low-intensity exercises. This increases blood flow to the muscles and makes them more elastic and pliable than cold muscles, thereby improving flexibility. Some low-intensity cardiovascular exercise on the stationary bike or treadmill can greatly reduce injury risk during the workout.

family came to our aid and a woman from a nearby house. We are so grateful for their assistance. We cannot thank you both enough. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

one would wonder where all those flowers and pots came from. We will no longer be planting pots for the roadside, so you will have to look elsewhere for your flowers. What is going on this year? People are spotlighting deer and shooting them right from the car. I saw a guy the other day by [local] golf club shoot at a deer right out the window of a little silver car across both lanes of the road in broad daylight! My neighbors have had their tree stands stolen from their private posted property. I have trail cam pics of guys sneaking into my hunting spot during bow season. out their faces. I have also had people tell me they shot a deer with a deer slug. Then, when they skinned it, it had buckshot or bird shot in the hide. Another friend got a buck. He had to throw the meat out when he skinned it because there was a rotten spot from the neck to the front leg. It was 7pm, and I was washing dishes. I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. Had I not come outside and turned the porch light on, he may have shot my horse. On Wed 11/20/19 around sundown, you killed Stevie, a silly brindle mutt we loved for just over a year. not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. College students are no longer just young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees. Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits. EMPLOYMENT

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.
