Sandy Bottom Meets Pokémon Go! By Amanda Dudek

W

hen Justin Calhoun and his fiancé moved to Honeoye from Kentucky last year, he quickly fell in love with Honeoye Lake, Sandy Bottom Park and its walking trail. While Calhoun enjoyed the peace and quiet the Sandy Bottom Walking Trail brought to his meditative walks, he believed he could add another layer of interaction to the trail experience. He decided to create Pokéstops along the trail, in the park and in town. “I have been a fan of Pokémon since I was a teenage and a fan of Pokémon Go! since it came out in 2016,” said Calhoun, originally from Rochester, New York. Pokémon Go! is an interactive game for which players must walk around and be physically active. Players go to different stops to play, finding Pokémon, battling and more. “In the game’s gyms, you can see different people who are in the gym,” continued Calhoun. “When I first moved here, I didn’t see much going on [in the game].” Having mostly lived in metro areas, Calhoun was delighted to get away from the city atmosphere. “Watching the sunrise and sunset here is beautiful,” observed Calhoun. “The Cummings Nature Park, taking the dogs for walks around there... the whole area is so peaceful and nice. You always see people walking their dogs, and you get to talk with people you meet.” “I figured why not try to make a couple of stops along the trail so that I could do something active with my game while I walk?” explained Calhoun. “I live right next to the Sandy Bottom Walking Trail, and I frequent it with my dogs.”

Winter fun at the park!

For Calhoun, like many others, the benefits of the game extend well beyond exercise. “It gets me out in the community,” said Calhoun. “You can get a couple of people together and battle at a specific gym in some groups. It is fun and interesting; you get to meet new people you probably wouldn’t have normally.” Contrary to what some may think, the game isn’t just for kids. “You get people my age that are doing it, teenagers and in between,” said Calhoun, age thirty-three. “I have met people from teenagers to fifty and sixty-year-olds. It’s very surprising that they know about Pokémon and that they are playing the game in general. It is nice to have a community, the community of gamers, yes, and others. It’s a diverse crowd.” Referring to Pokémon Go!, Calhoun added, “Avon actually has a huge community. I have made a lot of friends there, and I spend a lot of time in Avon. It would be nice to do more within the game in Honeoye.” Even so, Calhoun’s Pokémon Go! efforts have not gone unnoticed. “I have had a couple of people...notice the stops. The game doesn’t tell you who put the stops in, but I’ve said I have been trying to work on putting some stops in Honeoye. Some people have noticed and thanked me for doing that.”

Justin Calhoun and one of his dogs enjoying Sandy Bottom Park!

In fact, Calhoun and his fiancé, a vet assistant, have six dogs. “My fiancé used to work a 24-hour, emergency vet clinic in Kentucky,” he said. “That is how she got her four dogs, and I had my two. They keep me busy!” Once the idea struck, Calhoun was off and running, or rather, walking. “It was pretty easy,” Calhoun shared. “You have to reach a certain level within the game to nominate places as stops, which I had already reached. The stops are usually historic landmarks, churches and points of interest in the community. And Sandy Bottom Trail is a landmark within Honeoye, so that made it easy, too.” Next, Calhoun chose his stops. “I used the bridge and the information hut as stops,” he said. “The game turned the pavilion into a gym where you battle and get coins.” Calhoun made some more stops and still wasn’t done.

For Calhoun, it has been a complete success. “For me, it is personal,” he shared. “I wanted to get away from unhealthy influences. This has encouraged me to go on more walks, have a little fun and keep that better lifestyle.” Enjoy this article? “Slowly, as I started getting more stops into the town, I started seeing more and more people participating. I thought I would try to expand it, so I made a couple of additional stops at the trail head, on Main Street and at the library,” he added.

DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

No Screening Tests for Bile Duct Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and lightcolored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who is a longtime user of diet soda pop. A year ago, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and spots on her liver. She is taking chemo again now. She continues to consume diet soda, which concerns me because I have heard of possible adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. How would you advise her? I hesitate to say anything, since she might be getting more unsolicited advice than she wants already. -- M.K. ANSWER: I think that artificial sweeteners are unlikely to have had any role in causing her cancer in the first place, nor in her treatment or risk of recurrence. It’s more important for her to stay hydrated during chemotherapy, and she should have what is easiest for her -- and if that’s diet soda, that’s fine. Even if water is the best choice, I completely agree with your thoughtfulness: Now is not the time to give unsolicited health advice. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Many thanks to Northside Salvage Co. in East Rochester! You delivered as promised, for which I am much grateful. Sorry this “shout out” recognizing your reliable business took so long to submit, but here it finally is. We came to you looking for a real spare tire, not a ‘donut’. For a Christmas present last year, we received a gift card from a popular restaurant/bar in [local town]. Shortly thereafter, they closed for renovations. We anxiously awaited their reopening. Finally, we were able to stop for lunch. The new owner refused to accept our gift card. We were not aware it was under new management. We do know Sherry would have done anything to retain us as a customer. Sadly, we will not darken the doorway of this establishment again. Hope the new owner brings all new clientele; he will need them if he is to remain in business. On November 7th, I was lucky enough to shoot a nice 8-point buck. I was going to mount the antlers

There was a mix up with the inventory, and it was at your Buffalo lot, though you promised home delivery nicely wrapped in plastic the next day. Being short on time and purchasing other used car parts from the Northside Salvage Co. before, I had no doubt about paying in advance and trusting your company. People waste so much money on new parts when they can support a local business that has a great reputation and just about every screw, bolt, mirror, hubcap, and tire they need. Northside Salvage, thank you very

much, cheers to a safe and healthy year to all of you and your families. Your hard work is gratefully appreciated. Toni – East Rochester

on a plaque because they were quite large. On November 8th, the butcher called and said my deer was cut up. I picked it up and on the way home stopped at [local] grocery store to get a few things. The meat and head were in the back of my truck. When I came out of the store the head was gone! Why would you steal it? When you mount it, tell your friends that’s the one you stole from the grocery store parking lot. The tag was on the antlers. If you would like to return it, I’d appreciate it, but I doubt you will.

The bride spends all the holidays with her family and forgets his! This is very selfish and crosses the line to just plain mean when your husbands have only one surviving parent. What do you suppose that parent does for the day? Seriously, are the people who raised the man you love so awful? I won’t even go into how sad it is when grandchildren are involved. Take a minute to take stock of your holidays. Are you respectful and inclusive of your husband’s families, or are you guilty of this behavior? Once you’re finished with all the excuses as to why you don’t go there, take time to put on your big girl pants and go act like a considerate adult. You can set a good example for the kids. At least give your husband time to take the kids for a visit.

Attention Daughter-inLaw! Your husbands have families, too! I am seeing more and more one-sided holiday arrangements.

Our Forefathers who drafted and signed the United States Constitution were geniuses! The U.S. Constitution is the perfect model for a Republic Democracy, “...govt. of the people, by the people, and for the people.” To do away with what the U.S. Constitution states would be to undermine the human intelligence and drive to make and keep America the best country to live in in the

world! It is okay to disagree with others, but when it’s carried so far that it hurts others you disagree with, then it isn’t okay. You cannot make everyone happy, as humans are all different, and not one individual human is the same as another. This is a good thing! Thanks to the Red Cross for installing two new smoke detectors in my home. I’m sleeping much better at night. Geneseo Senior Citizen

Enough is Enough about wheelchair rights! Please get off it. With all the horrific things happening in the world, move on about being an adult in a wheelchair and being treated like one. Be happy if someone is considerate and takes the time to try to help or assist someone they may think needs assistance. This could be anyone, and not necessarily someone in a wheelchair. If you don’t want the help, then tell them so. Simple as that. Stop this obsessing about whether it is an assault or someone feeling “pity” for you. I thank God that my mother was a dignified and gracious woman (in a motorized wheelchair) who had enough common sense to know how to deal with someone trying to assist her. Get a life!

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Good G ood H Health ealth R Reset eset (NAPS)—A good health reset can happen any time of the year. It simply takes a commitment to making small, sustainable changes that add up to impactful, healthy habits. Dr. Samara Sterling with The Peanut Institute says it’s best to begin by concentrating on the good habits you already follow. “Set yourself up for success by building on the healthy things you like to do,” says Sterling. “For example, if you typically eat one serving of fruit a day, figure out a way to increase that to two servings.” Over time, as you amp up your healthy habits, the detrimental ones tend to fade away more easily. As part of a good health reset, Dr. Sterling recommends incorporating more protein, especially plant-based proteins, into a daily diet. “Proteins and healthy fats make you feel fuller for longer and can help eliminate the urge to snack and consume empty calories,” explains Sterling. Peanuts are an example of a powerful plant protein. Just one serving of peanuts delivers seven grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals and heart-healthy fats. “Peanuts are categorized as a superfood because they’re nutrientdense and deliver superior health benefits in a very small serving,” says Dr. Sterling. “If you combine superfoods, like kale and peanuts or quinoa and peanuts, you’re really maximizing your nutritional intake.” There’s more good news because peanut butter also packs protein. “Research has shown that the consumption of small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” says Sterling. “It’s easy to incorporate peanuts and peanut butter into breakfast, lunch or dinner.”

On Jan. 20, 1980, bleachers at a bullring in Sincelejo, Colombia, collapse, resulting in the deaths of 222 people. The deadliest tragedy at a sporting event in Colombia's history was the result of overcrowding and poor construction. On Jan. 22, 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau releases detailed statistics on race and ethnicity showing that the Hispanic population was the country's largest minority group. Some 29% of immigrants in the U.S. had come from Mexico alone. On Jan. 21, 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War. Some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early ‘70s to avoid military service.

It is a mistake to regard age as a downhill grade toward dissolution. The reverse is true. As one grows older, one climbs with surprising strides. ~ George Sand

Cindy’s life was illuminated by beauty, driven by hard work, and filled with unconditional love for others. If she saw an opportunity to help someone or simply to brighten their day, she made it happen. It didn’t matter where she was or who you were to her – a friend, a stranger or even a stray animal lost and alone. Cindy was a multi-talented person earning her the family nickname of “Martha Friggin Stewart.” The only thing is she was ten times better than Martha. Her cooking was beyond compare and she was always treating her family and friends with her marvelous cuisine. Her gardens were on a level of the Home and Garden caliber. She could fix a hem, sew a missing button or make you a whole suit. But most of all her personality was like no other. Her radiant beauty was unlike any other. She warmed any room and made you feel safe and comfortable. Her memory will continue to comfort us all in the years to come. Family and friends may call on Saturday, January 25th, from 12noon2pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street, Honeoye, NY where Cindy’s funeral service will be held at 2pm, following calling hours. Burial will follow at Richmond Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Happy Tails Animal Shelter, Ontario County Humane Society, 2976 County Road #48, Canandaigua, NY 14424. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Mixed signals could create problems. Make sure your views are presented clearly, and insist others do the same. Don’t let an unanswered question go by without a full explanation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial pressures ease, allowing for more budget flexibility. But as the money-wise Bovine will appreciate, thrift still beats out splurging. Expect news from someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting things done is what you do so well. But be careful not to overtax your energy reserves. Take time out to relax or to do something different to help keep them at optimum levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a good time to satisfy the Moon Child’s growing sense of wanderlust. Choose a really special place to go to, with a very special person to share it all with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being in the spotlight. But be careful it doesn’t blind you to the truth behind a seemingly wonderful opportunity. Look closer and you might be sadly surprised at what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Isn’t it time to take a break from your hectic schedule? Sure it is. And the sooner you do, the sooner you can return fresh and more than ready to take on all those new projects. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent family incident can help bring everyone closer, and there’s no one who’s better at making that happen than you. Accept (indeed, insist on!) help from others to get things off and running. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Long-held habits are often difficult to break. But the change from how you always did things to how you can do them now can be liberating. So, be flexible and give it a try. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone you met in your professional world last year and thought you would never hear from again could make a sudden reappearance in your life, along with an interesting offer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, you delight everyone by coming up with a solution for a problem that actually works. On another note, it’s not too early to get started on those travel plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Before you go ahead with finalizing your plans for your new project, check them over to see if you can make some improvements or if you can find ways to cut costs. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Fabulous Fish might have been out of the social swim for too long, and it’s time you plunge back in. Reinforce your old friendships and be open to starting new ones. BORN THIS WEEK: Your creative talents help bring beauty to the world and the people in it. On their behalf, thank you. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
