Finding t he right f am ily car
CORBY’S COLLISION
Cost: W hile cost should not be the only consideration w hen choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people w ill ever make, w hich only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids w ith college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, w hich can be pricey, w hile buying outright affords vehic le ow ners to c hoose the level of c overage they are most comfortable w ith. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot w ith the pedal to the metal.

(585) 624-2301 • www.corbyscollision.com RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. Page 10
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. It can’t hurt to listen to good advice from those who have your best interests at heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people’s disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. That’s the best way to be assured of making wise and honest decisions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you’re going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. Best advice: Avoid overdoing it. Let things take their course. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel -- alone or with that special person. So if you’ve been putting off making those getaway plans, it’s still a good time to get started on them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. Be suspicious about anything that looks like the “perfect” prospect. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. But the wise Virgo who shows some flexibility could find it paying off in a big way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. There’s a possibility that you haven’t been told all the facts that you deserve to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge, whether it’s in the workplace or in a personal relationship. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. Before making any decisions, you might want to check with others who have had some experience in that area. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A situation involving someone close could benefit from your timely intervention. Avoid being judgmental. There’ll be plenty of time later for those “little talks” you like to have. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel could be a surprise element in that new project. Be prepared for other previously undisclosed aspects that also might come to light as you proceed with the work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Try to balance your work-related responsibilities with the time you’re spending on your recently revived social life. An old friend might be planning to return after a long absence. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sensitivity makes you aware of the needs of others. Have you considered a career as a counselor? Canines Employeed to Keep VA Drug-free VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System Implements Canine Program for Narcotics Detection By Amanda Dudek
V
A Finger Lakes Healthcare System Police Department (Bath and Canandaigua VA Medical Centers) have invested in and implemented a canine program for narcotics detection to keep patients and visitors safe. Acting Chief for Canandaigua/Bath/ Rochester VA Police, Kent Strege along with Sergeant Christopher Hamilton and Canine Sampson in Canandaigua and Lieutenant Jeffrey Mastin and Canine George in Bath currently work to protect Veterans from illicit substances at their VA Medical Center campuses, both comprised of many acres. Their efforts have been successful in more ways than one. Canines have been used by police in narcotics detection because not only is it a psychological deterrent, but a dog’s sense of smell can scan a room for illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia quicker than the police can search a room for these items. “The thought of a Canine Program started back in 2014 when it was a relatively newer program within VA nationwide,” explained Sergeant Christopher Hamilton, Chief Canine Handler for Canine Sampson. “In 2016, we started the program in Canandaigua.” The program was found to be such a “useful and successful tool” that it was implemented at the VA Medical Center in Bath, as well. The two Labrador retriever dogs Sampson (4 years old) at Canandaigua VA and George (18 months old) at Bath VA are narcotics detection certified, receive ongoing monthly training and annual certification and each have their own special vehicle for transportation. Sampson has responded to over 60 narcotics related police calls at VA medical centers State-wide and has had 14 finds for substance or drug paraphernalia. George who is just getting started has had three finds since joining VA. Both dogs will help keep the environments safe at both VA medical centers for in-patient and out-patient Veterans, visitors and employees. “The finds have given us either illicit product or paraphernalia or something along those lines,” said Hamilton. “I think the biggest thing is that it is a great visual deterrent, and that is a huge factor.” The benefit of this is readily realized. “It is an invaluable tool when you talk about the safety of the Veterans on our campuses,” stated Strege. “Several Veterans are recovering from illicit drug use. We want Veterans to come to VA who want the necessary help to beat that substance, and having such substances around could trigger a relapse.” Sergeant Chris Hamilton at Rochester Calkins VA Clinic with Sampson.
However, both Strege and Hamilton agree that the value of the canine program extends beyond the clear benefit of keeping our VA locations safe from substance abuse. “The reaction from Veterans has been very positive,” shared Hamilton. “They always seem to be happy to see me and the dog walking the hallway.” Sergeant Hamilton feels that Sampson, a black lab, is often a comforting presence to the Veterans.
pet... it can turn a bad day into a good day. That has been very effective for us, too.” Sergeant Hamilton describes the dogs as “multipurpose” in that they are excellent at finding illicit substances and discouraging their presence while also having a calming effect on those around them, stating, “Sampson is a perfect fit in our department.” The safety of Veterans is the priority of the VA canine program, a cause that the officers hold close to their hearts. “All of the officers in our department are Veterans,” shared Strege and Hamilton. “We chose this career field because we have a passion for this. Our goal is to serve our Veterans, and being one gives us an automatic rapport with them. We are able to calm situations relatively quickly.”
Lieutenant Jeffrey Mastin with George at the Bath VA Medical Center.
Acting Chief Strege and Sergeant Hamilton also encourage area communities to support their work by supporting Veterans. “Any support the public gives us, especially as law enforcement officers, we appreciate, and we encourage them to support our Veterans in any way that aids in creating a safe environment and helps them have a safe visit.” There are many ways to help support Veterans. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area.
W hile it’s tempting to huddle up indoors w hen w inter hits full sw ing, families w ho embrace the great outdoors w hen the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the w ay.
“One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

Though Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has passed, it is not too late to thank the men and women who put a uniform on every day to protect and serve. Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room in Webster. As I looked out the window, I saw a man riding his bike. On People need to seriously start picking up the poop from their dogs! I am so tired of, and disgusted by, dog poop all over the place, including my front lawn. I have a large dog that I walk every day, and I 100% pick up after him. You know who you are; stop it! After reading about a disruptive child in a checkout line especially when the child tried to steal personal property and was messing with the cash register, I have to wonder why this cashier did not immediately call for the manager to come to the front of the store and handle this situation. That is one of the responsibilities of a store or front-end manager. Does anyone in the [local town] know what a stop sign is or how to stop? I realize that you think GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

his bike, he had attached a large can. As he rode along, he would stop and reach (with a hand extender) and pick up papers and put them in the can. What a wonderful thing for him to do after uncaring people throw them out with no concern about the mess they left. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

A very special thank you to Jodi Drojak of Bark & Bubbles Pet Grooming in Webster. Her care and love that she gives to our two dogs means the world to our family. She is a fantastic person and the best groomer we have ever had. Also, thank you, Amanda Marietta, for your
On Sunday, January 26, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville-Chili School District and the Monroe County Parks Department at the Churchville Elementary School. The Lions, once again, sold out their “World Famous” Chicken BBQ, and there were carnival games, airbrush tattoos, caricature drawings, and a bounce house in the gymnasium. directionals are optional, but stop signs are not. Also, while waiting to go over the one bridge we have, don’t park across people’s driveways. Finally, to those who buy their coffee at the little shop in the village, stop parking where it is not a parking spot, so that anyone handicapped can’t enter other businesses. Can any of you be considerate?
all. Maybe this is one reason why so many restaurants and businesses are going under. The added costs to do any kind of business in New York State are outrageous! Add to this the lack of any customer service, and it would equal disaster and fewer jobs. Minimum wage goes up; then all prices go up, so no one gains anything in the end. Having no state income tax would help.
Far too many chain restaurants are forgetting about good customer service, i.e. good wait staff etiquette, and worrying about profit over customers. If you’ve ever learned economics in school, when they used to actually teach basic life skills as part of the regular curriculum, you would have learned that without customers to serve, you have no money, and no profit is made at
Please, please, please, if you put garbage out for collection, be considerate of your neighbors and do your best to make sure your bins don’t tip! Every time garbage day is windy, my yard ends up strewn with wind-blown trash and recycling. If people simply took a little more care with how they fill and place their bins, I wouldn’t be stuck picking up and disposing of someone else’s garbage.

Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy. Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 8, 1587, after 19 years of imprisonment, Mary Queen of Scots is beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle in England for her complicity in a plot to murder Queen Elizabeth I. In 1542, while just six days old, Mary had ascended to the Scottish throne upon the death of her father, King James V.
Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation. Better Place Forests hopes the idea of a beautiful, sustainable final resting place will encourage people to create those plans. Instead of tombstones, the company incorporates ashes into the base of beautiful trees in permanently protected forests. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye. Currently, there are two forests in California, in Point Arena in Mendocino County and in Santa Cruz, and the company plans to open more across the country.
* On Feb. 4, 1913, Rosa Parks is born Rosa Louise McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. Parks’ name has become synonymous with her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in 1955. * On Feb. 6, 1928, a woman calling herself Anastasia Tschaikovsky and claiming to be the youngest daughter of the murdered Russian czar Nicholas II Romanov arrives in New York City. It wasn’t until 1994 that Anastasia’s DNA showed her to be Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish-German factory worker.
There is a growing trend toward greener burial options in the United States. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, nearly 54 percent of Americans are considering a green burial and 72 percent of cemeteries report an increased demand for green burials. Thousands of people have already reserved trees for themselves. “Making plans and establishing guidelines for the end of your life means that loved ones don’t have to guess about your wishes and you can give them the experience you’d like them to have when you pass,” explained Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests. “At Better Place Forests, we talk to people every day who find peace in knowing they have created a beautiful experience for their loved ones by selecting a family tree.” Beyond providing a more beautiful final resting place, choosing a tree in one of these memorial forests means you are leaving a legacy of conservation. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye and continue to visit—a feature current cremation options can’t provide. The trusts also actively manage the land to ensure that it’s less susceptible to forest fires. They hire forestry experts to keep the trees healthy and the forests free of invasive species. In addition, more trees are planted in areas in need for every tree a customer chooses. Thousands of trees have already been planted in forests devastated by the California wildfires. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that drinking warm lemon water with honey has many health benefits, partially because lemons are an alkaline food. Is this correct? -- B.W. ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic. There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH.

I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse. Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation? Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day. But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time. Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart. An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them. Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about. However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings. Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal. Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily. Chocolate does contain theobromide, a substance that can make the heart a little more irritable, but it takes a lot of chocolate to have a significant effect. It’s related to caffeine in coffee. Interestingly, a recent study found that chocolate lovers are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, so the situation is more complex than just one chemical.

DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
FINDING WORK AFTER 50
Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES

(NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic.

Rush, NY 14543 Phone: 585-533-2500 Website: www.cyncon.com BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Maintaining energy throughout the workday can sometimes be difficult. For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane.
Open part-time Deli position: Interested person must be at least 18 yrs of age. Must be reliable, customer service oriented, be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment, be a team player, good communicator and a problem solver. Must be available evenings and weekends.

For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.
