MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1838, after his Mormon bank fails in the Panic of 1837, Joseph Smith flees Kirtland, Ohio, to avoid potential criminal prosecution by angry and disillusioned former believers. Smith claimed the angel Moroni had visited him in 1823 and told him he was destined to become a modern prophet of God.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog Balks at Wheelchair DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 11, 1973, the owners of America’s 24 major league baseball teams vote to allow teams in the American League to use a “designated pinch-hitter” that could bat for the pitcher, while still allowing the pitcher to stay in the game. WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG
TREE SERVICES
As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door. Page 8

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES
Penny Saver
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
These two buddies are River and Theo. River loves to protect her yard and bark loudly. Theo enjoys cuddling River and thinks he’s a dog too.

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Looking Out for No. 1
Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR
TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
M otorcycles: Riding a motorcycle is a fair-w eather hobby, and retailers are aw are of this. The easy riders of tomorrow might be able to find great deals today.
Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.
Online
POLL As a new year begins, the wellbeing of our planet continues to be a top concern for many. What do you feel is the most effective way to positively impact the environment?
NOW HERE’S A TIP
• Environmental Legislation • Global Agreements • Large-Scale Cleanup Projects • Local Initiatives • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • All of the Above • I am not concerned.
By JoAnn Derson * Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%.
Poll Ends 01-11-22 Poll Ends 01-04-22 The uncertainty of the last two years have made some hesitant to make plans and set goals for the future. Will you make any New Year's resolutions for 2022? 20% Yes, absolutely! 20% No way! 20% I always do. 40% I never do.
REASONS TO GET AN AIR FRYER Affordability: Air fryers are very affordable, especially when considering their versatility. Many air fryers can be had for around $100 or less.

* Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps.

Color Penfield Green: Leading the Way with Climate Conscious Initiatives BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s 2022 begins, the environment and climate change continue to concern many. At least 15 of New York State’s Finger Lakes Region communities have partnered with an organization called the Climate Solutions Accelerator to begin taking action. Penfield is one such community, thanks in part to resident organization, Color Penfield Green. Color Penfield Green (CPG) is part of the greater Color your Community Green movement and the Climate Solutions Accelerator (CSA). CPG is a grassroots effort dedicated to educating individuals and working to move town officials to make environmentally friendly changes. “Color Brighton Green inspired us with the whole idea of a community group,” said CPG leader, Katie Rygg. “We are all volunteers and include a junior effort called Color your School Green.” Rygg acts as the liaison between the adult CPG and the student CSG. A prime example of one of CPG’s successes are Penfield’s Community Choice Aggregation. “This is my passion project, started by my fellow CPG volunteer, Al Hibner, before CPG started,” shared Rygg. “About three years ago, he formed a residents committee to see if we could implement a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). Now, we are implementing Penfield’s new program with more eco-friendly options, including 50% and 100% renewable electricity.” Rygg also credits Penfield residents for lobbying the Town Board to make these “green” options a reality and praised the Town Board for offering these options. Color Penfield Green has seen other successes, as well. It’s clean energy classes have been gaining momentum. “45 people took our NYS Clean Energy Communities: Community Campaign for Electric Vehicles course with us through the Penfield Recreation Department,” stated Rygg. CPG plans to offer this course again and will be partnering with Heat Smart Monroe to offer a second class under the Climate Solutions Accelerator umbrella in the spring. “It is Penfield residents teaching Penfield residents,” explained Hibner. “If 10 people purchase or lease electric vehicles, our town would receive $5,000 for sustainability projects. We are also starting a process for clean heating and cooling. We can earn up to $10,000 for these two campaigns. Why not use renewable energy?”
Joe Gersitz and Katie Rygg (l-r) tabling at the Greater Rochester Clean Cities EV Car Show!
Yet, even with these “green” victories, there is much work to do. “I have two small children, and I would love to see them riding electric school buses,” said Rygg. “I know this is the direction we are going.” She explained that current diesel buses only get about 4-10 miles to the gallon of fuel. “Electric school buses are coming,” Rygg continued. “The community support is there, and we can make things happen. We have already presented on this to parent organizations and our town, and there has been a lot of positive response there. We are hoping Penfield’s new busing
●
facility can be ready to roll with electric school busses.” CPG’s outlook is hopeful as the town considers the feasibility of such an undertaking. “We realize there is more to do; that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more,” said Hibner. “These local groups are a sweet spot for creating change. State and national changes are good, but they can be challenging. When working with local municipalities, you can organize quickly in your home community and meet with your officials quickly. It just flows naturally. These are your friends and neighbors with whom you are working and whom you are helping. We can help others find likeminded people in their communities, or, if there is not a group already, we can help them start one.” Hibner and Rygg both added that they appreciate Penfield’s historic support. “Penfield built a 5-acre solar farm to supply up to 80% of the energy needed to power their government buildings,” they said. “We want to compliment them and to support them in doing even more.”
We realize there is more to do… that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more.
Interested in learning more? Check out Color Penfield Green’s blog. You’ll find information on everything from electric cars to renewable energy. Visit the Finger Lakes Region’s Color your Community Green website at climatefl. org/color-your-community-green.
Another CPG campaign that has been wildly successful is its Healthy Yards initiative through Healthy Yards Monroe County. “We met with the Penfield Parks Department,” said Rygg. “We want to make sure our parks have more native pollinator plants, use best practices for healthy soil, and reduce pesticide use.” Rygg credited fellow volunteer Megan Meyer for her hard work on this campaign.

Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother
The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas. Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Let’s HEAR it for 2022!
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms
Wishing you your best year yet!
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness. ***

NEW ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT RENEWABLES POST COVID-19 (NAPSI) — Cleaner air can improve public health, maybe even save lives. Fortunately, renewable energy resources—wind, sun, hydropower and the like—are now producing more electricity than coal. That’s where innovative energy storage solutions come in. They help create a cleaner world, encouraging investment into clean, green, renewable energy. To help, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. New bi-partisan efforts in states such as New York and the Trump administration are in alignment to support new energy storage technologies that drastically improve the economics of wind and solar projects. The global rise in electricity generation from renewable sources has led to increased demand for advanced batteries that can be used to firm up this intermittent supply. This requirement is particularly important in areas where grid connections may be tenuous, unreliable or even non-existent. Additional demand for advanced batteries is presented by grid applications such as peak-shifting and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) capital deferral. Energy storage systems provide many ways to manage the power supply for a more resilient energy infrastructure, and bring cost savings to utilities and consumers. Batteries allow the use of electricity whenever it’s needed, not only when it’s generated. However, traditional battery economics and performance have not proved helpful as utilities look to increase renewable penetration through long-duration energy storage. The Problem One of the challenges to growing a North American energy storage industry, however, has been a dependency on a supply chain of hardware components, metals and chemicals, many of which come from outside North America. As well, metals such as lithium and vanadium used in some batteries are impacted by price volatility and security of supply. An Answer Those same risks do not apply to zinc-air batteries. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, with a significant North American supply. Its chemistry is robust and safe. A zinc-air battery has decoupled energy and power, making it one of the lowest-cost longduration battery storage solutions available. A safer, cleaner future requires less polluted air which means replacement of carbonbased power generation with renewable, sustainable sources of electricity. Longduration, low-cost energy storage systems such as zinc-air will be a key driver to a quicker path towards a greener future. A “bet” on energy storage is a wager that will deliver a cleaner planet that will thrive for current and future generations, suggests Ron MacDonald, president and CEO of Zinc8 Energy Solutions, the leader in zinc-air battery technology, a unique flow battery technology using zinc and air as fuel. Most people would love to be fearless of everything and anyone. However, you might find your reality of this lacking. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim. 1:7. Some are stifled from moving ahead in the New Year because of Fear. How to get over this wall: I think a good dose of courage. Remember the little engine that could? It’s good for big kids also. God told Joshua as well to take courage before his battles. This life is full of them. “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” If you pray, ask God to reveal His will, and step out by Faith, then God can do great things for you and through you.

HOMETOWN
Patricia Ann Philipson (Russo) January 1, 2022 Ionia/Fairport: Patricia Ann Philipson, August 27, 1935 – January 1, 2022. Patricia passed away peacefully on January 1, 2022, at Conesus Lake Nursing Home. She was 86 years old. She is survived by her children, Michael Anthony Philipson, Judith Ann Philipson Green (Scott), and Thomas William Philipson, who were by her bedside, and by Lewis and Thomas Stess Johnston, and Jesse Sutterlin, who are all “honorary sons,” and many dear friends. Her daughter, Chrisann Philipson, welcomed her into heaven. She was born in Rochester, NY, into an Italian family and was predeceased by her siblings, Mary Jane and Anthony Russo and her parents, Theresa Cimo Russo and Dominick Russo. Patty lived in Rochester, Ionia, Perinton, and Honeoye, NY. She loved going out on the boat and jet-ski, played elaborate practical jokes on her family, and created many happy memories at her beloved Harvard Cottage on Honeoye Lake. She worked a hard factory job at Crosman Arms in East Bloomfield, making BBs and BB guns. She was a consummate Euchre player, winning many championship games at the Senior Center in Perinton, and took great delight in “euchre-ing” all of her children whenever possible. She traveled the world with cruises to Barbados and the Bahamas, trips to San Francisco and Paris, and even visited Hawaii and Australia. Above all, she had a wicked dry sense of humor which could have you rolling on the floor in laughter, or, alternately, cursing at her under your breath. Life threw challenge after challenge at her, but she carried on through all of it with great dignity and an incredible sense of style. She even earned the nickname “Hollywood” at Conesus Lake Nursing Home, where she received excellent care and true compassion by the entire staff. She loved clothes that sparkled and had a shoe collection which once seemed to rival that of Imelda Marcos. She loved to decorate her home (orange was her favorite color!) and moved the furniture around about once a month just to “freshen things up.”

But most of all she was a Mom. She worked hard to put a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. While sometimes too exhausted to do much else, she rubbed our bellies when sick, put butter on our burned fingers, and taught us about the consequences of our actions. Above all, she set a great example about how to rise above all life’s challenges with grace and laughter. Her presence will be sorely missed. A graveside service will be held in the summer at Miller’s Corners Cemetery, Ionia, NY. The date and time will be announced in the future and a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held following the service. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Embrace Your Sisters, PO Box 322, Canandaigua, NY 14424 or online at www.embraceyoursisters.org.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

The beginning of the year is an ideal time to get organized and set oneself up for productive months ahead. It’s also a good opportunity to take inventory of seldom-used items and clear out as much clutter as possible. The amount of stuff the average person owns can affect how easy or difficult it is for that person to get organized. In 2014, professional organizer Regina Lark estimated the average American home contains 300,000 items. And it’s not just adults who love to collect and keep things, as kids contribute to the problem, too. British research, as published in The Telegraph, indicates the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys, playing with just 12 in a typical day. All of these belongings contribute to disorganization and lost time. A study by Esure Home Insurance found looking for lost items accounts for 10 minutes of wasted time each day. Getting organized can take perseverance, but it’s possible.
DID YOU KNOW? Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.
