TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

Eric and Gail owned and operated Belhigh Tool and Machine in Victor, NY. A Funeral Mass for both Eric and Gail will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 10:30AM at St. Mary’s Church, 8961 Main Street in Honeoye, NY. Interment will immediately follow mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Honeoye, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, PO Box 725, Honeoye, NY 14471 or to the Town of Richmond Fire Department: PO Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need. Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up. Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life. • Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group. • Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in. • Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people. • Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits. • Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause. • Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need. Being charitable is easier than one might think, and even the smallest efforts can produce big results.

Potential treatment options after a breast cancer diagnosis A breast cancer diagnosis is something no one wants to receive. But the burden of breast cancer is substantial. In fact, the World Health Organization notes that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide. Thankfully, breast cancer survival rates are high in many parts of the world, particularly in developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan. While survival rates are lower in developing countries, it is encouraging to know that the average five-year survival rates are as high as 90 percent in some nations. That suggests that the strategies used to successfully fight breast cancer in developed nations may one day prove as effective in developing nations, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global breast cancer deaths. Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer, patients will be educated about a host of potential treatment options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that breast cancer is treated in several ways, and the course of treatment a doctor recommends will depend on the kind of breast cancer and how far it has spread. In addition, breast cancer is made up of many different kinds of cancer cells, which often necessitates the use of various types of treatments to get rid of the cancer. The following are some treatment options doctors may discuss with breast cancer patients. • Surgery: Surgery is typically the first line of attack against breast cancer. The CDC says the goal of surgery is to cut out cancer tissue. Some common breast cancer surgeries include lumpectomy, in which the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed, and mastectomy, in which all of the breast tissue is removed. • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is used to treat various types of cancer and involves the administration of special medicines to shrink or kill existing cancer cells. Chemotherapy is sometimes administered prior to surgery in an attempt to shrink the cancer. • Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy aims to kill cancer cells using high-energy rays that are similar to X-rays. Sometimes referred to as “radiotherapy,” radiation therapy is overseen by a radiation oncologist who specializes in this type of treatment. • Hormonal therapy: Estrogen makes hormone-receptorpositive breast cancers grow, and hormonal therapy, which may be referred to as “anti-estrogen” therapy, aims to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and block its action on breast cancer cells. • Targeted therapies: These therapies, which are generally less likely than chemotherapy to harm normal, healthy cells, target specific characteristics of the cancer cells. Cancer cells can have many characteristics, so there are various types of targeted therapies. Breast cancer treatments can be highly effective in the fight against breast cancer, particularly when the disease is caught in its early stages. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

Mama Medium Star Provides Message of Healing, Hope and Laughter By Bonnie Marrocco

G

PS states 9:33 as the arrival time, but the meeting is at 9:30. No phone call is necessary. She is a psychic after all. Actually, an empathic, psychic, clairvoyant is how the Bergen native and star of the new TLC show, Mama Medium, describes herself. What strikes others immediately is how friendly and nice Jennie is. She has a warm smile and when she says that it’s nice meeting you, there is a sense that she genuinely means it. She and her husband, Mike, are exactly as they appear on TV: they have a sweet and fun rapport with each other, joking and laughing. They talk with those around them like they are visiting with old friends. Mama Medium, Season 1, premiered in November with six episodes. The show aired nationwide and internationally: in the US, Canada, UK and even South Africa. Since the show started, Jennie has gotten messages from all over the world. Her demand for readings has increased from a waiting list of 700-1,000 people to 25,000 people and a current five year wait. She describes herself as an empathic, psychic, medium and 4th generation clairvoyant. Being empathic means she can communicate with those who can’t communicate; being a psychic means she can see the future, and being a medium refers to her ability to communicate with the dead and clairvoyant is how she receives messages from loved ones, through images. Jennie was born in Rochester, but grew up in the town of Bergen, in Genesee County. “Growing up, we didn’t talk about it,” said Jennie. “Every medium has different gifts and I’m the only one in the family who is public with mine.”

Jennie’s husband Mike, Jennie Marie & Bonnie Marrocco show. “My great-grandmother came to me and was talking to me about kissing my great-grandfather. I figured out I was an empath, I think, right around 11 ... some of my friends, we started playing soccer, and some of them started getting hurt and I remember feeling the pain in my body or crying for them.” In her twenties, she started experiencing moments that connected her with the other side. At this point, she had realized what she had was special and decided to meditate and let her power grow. By her thirties, she was working as a hairdresser and sharing her insights with clients. When they came back and expressed how her messages helped them heal, Jennie decided to devote her career to her gift and become a full-time medium. She is well-aware of the skeptics who ask why psychics don’t win the lottery. “Do you think that God gave me this gift so I can gamble?” Jenny quips. “I use it to help other people. I say to critics that we are all entitled to our own opinions - give me five minutes when someone close to them passes, then call me.”

Just as on her show, Jennie is a doting wife and mother with a funny and likeable personality. She jokes about being referred to as a medium, saying she’s actually an XXL. Clearly, she has a sense of humor. She loves to make others laugh and believes that she was a comedian in a past life. The Jennie Marie , “Mama Medium” series follows Jennie as she helps people communicate with their loved ones who have passed, or who have suffered life-altering events and cannot communicate on their own. It also chronicles her family life in Greece, NY. “Mediumship is a part of my everyday life. I ask God, my guardian angels, spirit guides and past relatives for guidance,” Jennie states. She lives in a busy household with her husband and four boys, who also carry the family’s spiritual gifts. “It’s a blessing and a challenge and meditation is a big factor in balancing my energy.” From studying Business Administration at Genesee Community College, to working in retail, being a flight attendant, real estate agent and hairdresser, Jennie has done many things and lived all over Western New York. From Bergen to Pavilion to LeRoy to Churchville with several moves back to Bergen, until ultimately settling in her current location: her husband’s hometown of Greece. Yet, her soul knew she would do more. “I can’t tell if I manifested it or if it was a premonition. I told my husband I would have a show four years ago,” Jennie said. “It was all in a joking way, and he said no. I would bring it up every year, and he would still say no, but it was lingering. And then it came together.” It is this trifecta - empathic, psychic and clairvoyant, which sets Jennie apart from other psychics.

Jennie says the best part of the show is all the support she has gotten from the community. “People recognize me and tell me how much they like the show,” she says. The meeting at a local restaurant was interrupted several times by fans wanting to take pictures with her. Always gracious and kind, she obliges, while her husband stands by proudly. He joked that his job is to take pictures for fans when they go out. Throughout the conversation, Jennie interjected with messages and insights that she could not have known. Maybe she did know the interview would start a little late that morning, and maybe she has some special intuition as to whether or not TLC will pick up her show for another season. Whether a camera crew is following her or not, Jennie will continue to provide her message of healing, hope and laughter through her readings and public appearances. You can watch her show On Demand or at TLC.com or visit her website: jenniethemedium.com. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming!

5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan

A Look Back…

(NAPSI)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020.

* On Oct. 25, 1881, Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, is born in Malaga, Spain. Picasso’s work comprises more than 50,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and ceramics produced over 80 years. He had his first exhibit at age 13. * On Oct. 24, 1901, schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel in an attention-getting stunt. She reached the shore alive, if a bit battered. Taylor claimed she was in her 40s, but records later showed she was 63. * On Oct. 26, 1942, the last U.S. carrier built before America entered World War II, the USS Hornet, is so badly damaged by Japanese warplanes in the Battle of Santa Cruz that it must be abandoned and was later sunk. The Hornet launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo.

3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as nonemergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle. LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Pack the right gear While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily. There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors. Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it’s best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

202-9218 DID YOU KNOW? According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

Autumn repays the earth the leaves which summer lent it. ~Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), translated by Norman Alliston, 1908

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. It’s best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50

O’Connor Chevrolet is seeking an experienced, professional licensed person for an immediate opening. This is a full-time position, experience preferred. Monday-Friday.

Open part-time cashier/ service desk position:

Adult Motor Routes

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
