Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far. When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress. GARDENING IN AUTUMN
JJMROOFING@aol.com • www.jjmhomeremodel.com
Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully.
All major credit cards accepted.

A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. Page 8

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Now More Than Ever, Get Your Flu Shot A sincere wish just came true: This year's high-dose senior version of the flu shot will contain all four vaccines. In past years, the senior shot (for those over age 65) contained only three of the vaccines, two A and one B. Most years I would write a snarly note to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ask about the reason for the false economy. Of course I never got a reply, but now ... finally, we seniors will have a flu shot with all four vaccines. And what a shot it will be. The four vaccines are names we haven't heard in a while, if ever: A/Guangdong-Maonan (H1N1), A/ Hong Kong (H3N2), B/Washington and B/Phuket. To help us kick start our immune system, the senior version will contain four times the amount that younger folks get. The standard trivalent (threeway) will have two A and one B, while the standard quadrivalent (four-way) has all four. If your doctor says you should have a flu shot, don't delay. When I called my pharmacy (where I get my flu shots each year), the first appointment was many days out, and they had been swamped with requests for the shot. Yes, they will be resupplied when they run out, but no, they didn't know how quickly that would be. By getting a flu shot, should you get sick later this season, it will be a good bet that it's not the regular flu, which will save much time in getting a diagnosis. To find flu shots, call your doctor, local pharmacies, grocery stores or go to vaccinefinder.org. If you have a Medicare or insurance card, you won't have to pay anything. If you want to know more, check the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/ flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2020 SUMMER GAZEBO CONCERT SERIES! The Riga Recreation Department just concluded its very successful 2020 Summer Gazebo Concert Series at the Village of Churchville Gazebo. In the tine of this health crisis, we were able to provide the community with some muchneeded relief. Many, many thanks to the following organizations that made all of this possible in these times of uncertainty: NYS Senator Michael Ranzenhofer’s Office, the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Churchville Lion’s Club and the following musical performers: Curbside Pickup, Blue Sky, Johnny Bauer, 8 Days a Week,
and Generations. -DaveThomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor ABOVE AND BEYOND! I want to give a huge thank you to all delivery people for making sure my parcels and mail arrive. A special thank you goes to our local FedEx. I order from Chewy frequently, and some of the items are excessively heavy. I have a pet that has allergies, and I am finding it difficult right now finding unscented products along with special animal food in our local stores. FedEx has no idea why I order what I do, but I wanted to let them know that they do an excellent job, and I am very pleased with their work ethic. THANK YOU I would like to
thank all of the wonderful friends that have helped us through the passing of our son JP. Thank you to all who came to the wake as JP would have loved this. Also, thank you to all who have stopped by to give condolences, brought food, flowers and cards, and donations to GG’s future education and for checking on us. Thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for their help. We can’t get by without you. Thank you to Pastor Colin Pritchard for staying with Jessica the night JP passed away and for the wonderful words at the wake. We are so thankful for you coming. We feel blessed to know that JP was loved by so many. We miss you JP. Love ya all, Margo,
MUSIC A HUGE PROBLEM? Wow! You use such strong adjectives to describe people who post their views, words such as “attacked” and “ganging up” on the person who has a complaint about neighbor and their music. I read the post as did many others, I’m sure, and there was no such thing. You may not like or agree with the suggestions given, but that does not add up to ganging up on or attacking someone. It was just practical advice. It’s clear to see how someone’s playing music can become so distorted. I think the complaining neighbor has more problems than just the neighbor’s music playing. They seem to have such distaste for them it’s a shame. How sad. With all the woes in the world, it’s a pity to make such a big thing over music. How long has this been going on that, all of a
sudden, it is a huge problem? MUSIC TROUBLE So sorry about neighbor being bothered by loud music. How long have you been suffering? Are you the only neighbor having a problem with loud music so loud that it rattles your house? Maybe you should try to nicely explain to your neighbor how bothersome the music is to you? Have you given that a thought? Maybe do it over a cup of coffee? That always brings the tension down, just a few suggestions. Also, ear plugs can help somewhat. There are codes where you can’t play music late at night or too early in the morning. Don’t know if that is when the music is being played. It’s always good to get along with neighbors. Hopefully, you can get some much-needed relief. Kindness does go a long way. I have been blessed with
neighbors who are kind and considerate. RESPECT OTHERS WITH MUSIC The nature of character is not based on self-entitlement but of respect for other’s right to peace and quiet. This must be a consideration, especially when residing in close communities or apartment complexes. We should not have to suffer through someone else’s loud music or faulty exhaust systems, etc. Also, taste in music is variable. One person’s treasure is another person’s torment. Peace and quiet is not trivial. It is of precious value. Remember the quiet individual doesn’t annoy the loud one; it’s vice versa. So, who should move? MUSIC & GETTING ALONG If you live in an apartment complex and a neighbor is blaring their music, then you

Bobby, Jessica, Anthony Emme and GG MY HEARTFELT THANKS I want to publicly thank the concerned motorist in the gray pickup truck who encountered me on North Main Street in the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st. He had purchased for me a reflective vest to wear as I exercise on the street’s shoulder. I was not aware that I was difficult to see since I wear a light-colored jacket and thought it was visible when headlights struck it. Thank you for your kindness and your personal concern for my safety. I was surprised and do feel safer wearing it!
should speak to management about it. It’s a different story if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of space in between homes and properties. Everyone has the right to enjoy their life, but unfortunately, we will not find a place where there is total peace and quiet. The bigger picture is getting along with one another, especially your neighbors. I know of someone who has a neighbor who does nothing but curse, I would take music, any day, over that.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Diabetes Not Limited to Only 2 Main Types ---
Our Office Offers: • Wisdom Teeth Extractions • Implants • Sedation Available • Financing Options • Laser Dentistry
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, at 57, I was diagnosed with Type 1 LADA diabetes. Initially I was put on insulin to get my blood sugar within the normal range. Then I was just on metformin until the “honeymoon period” was over. My endocrinologist is great. I now am back on insulin (six units at night). I walk anywhere between 3 and 8 miles about three times a day. My blood pressure is excellent. I initially lost about 18 pounds after diagnosis, so my weight is good. When looking at Google, it says my life expectancy has been cut by 20 years! Yikes, I JUST retired and if I go by their gauge, I’ll be passing around age 68! Is this based on someone who has had diabetes for many years, since Type 1 is usually diagnosed much earlier? The doctor said even though my initial sugars were over 500 when diagnosed, I was very healthy and that’s why nothing was “destroyed.” My vision was off for about a month but no permanent damage was done. Any reassurance would be appreciated! -- M.W. ANSWER: Most people are familiar with Type 1 diabetes, with a typical onset in childhood and at a normal weight. It is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. People also know about Type 2 diabetes, usually adultonset and usually diagnosed in someone who’s overweight; it’s caused by resistance to insulin. But there are other subtypes of diabetes, including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the U.S. and Canada, it accounts for a small fraction of diabetes cases, but is more common in Scandinavian countries. It has some characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but the autoimmune nature and the usual progression to insulin need makes most experts feel it is closer to Type 1 than to Type 2. A recent paper has outlined a potential new classification of diabetes types. The change in life expectancy from diabetes relates to how long you have had diabetes and how well-controlled it has been. With outstanding diabetes control (normal or near-normal blood sugar levels), the effect on overall mortality is modest, at best. In one model, the reduction in life expectancy is less than a year. However, it certainly is possible to have life expectancy drop by 20 years with very poorly controlled, longstanding diabetes. For people with diabetes, to a very large extent, their potential to live longer (and healthier) can be improved by better blood sugar control. For new-onset autoimmune diabetes (both Type 1 and LADA), early and aggressive blood sugar control with insulin may reduce the amount of autoimmune damage and improve long-term prognosis. Studies are in progress to evaluate this. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Long-Distance Move With Cats in Pickup DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three rescue cats. They’re the only family I’ve got. I’m planning to relocate to a rural area that is several days’ drive away. I’ll be driving a pickup truck. I feel that making my cats travel with me wouldn’t be humane. Is there an agency available that could humanely and safely transport my cats? -Karl in Avon, New York

DEAR KARL: I can totally relate! Years ago, I moved across the country with a very nervous cat in a carrier next to me on the bench seat of my pickup truck. Even though I made sure he had water, food and anxiety meds prescribed by the veterinarian, it was a stressful trip for him, and he did not eat or even poop for the whole two-day trip. Once I reached our new home, he returned to his usual snuggly self. Traveling with all three cats is possible with planning and may be the least stressful option for them. If you have an extended-cab pickup, make room in the back seat for three cat carriers. Put a litter pan on the floor and cover with plastic wrap while traveling; at rest stops, open one carrier at a time and let one cat out to use the litter pan and to snuggle with you (don’t open the vehicle doors while you do this). Look for pet-friendly hotels that will let you keep the cats in the room. Airline cargo transport can quickly transport pets across long distances. But there is a risk of death for pets traveling in airline cargo. Another option is private pet transport. If you choose this service, make sure they are insured and bonded, and that they will stay in contact with you throughout the trip.

Village of Fairport Completes Phase I of
Bicentennial Canal Gateway BY AMANDA DUDEK WITH THANKS TO MCDOUGALL COMMUNICATIONS
O
n Thursday, September 17th, the Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) held a ribbon cutting ceremony and news conference to honor the completion of Phase I of the Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project. The ceremony was held off of Fairport’s South Main Street on the Fairport Observation Deck which is situated on the Southwest bank of the Erie Canal and overlooking the Lift Bridge. Speakers included Mayor Julie Domaratz and New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton. Local leadership’s goal “to reinforce the Village of Fairport as a prime destination to live, work and play” is being realized – and on time! Phase I entailed placing the observation deck and non-motorized boat deck, new sidewalks, road base, lighting, landscaping, and historical interpretive signage. To accomplish this, the southwest bank needed to be cleared of all debris and brush and all utilities were removed and buried. The results included enhancements along the south bank, including a new park that will feature an interpretive heritage trail to celebrate the Erie Canal Bicentennial. Those attending the ribbon cutting were invited to participate in an optional walkabout along the Interpretive Heritage Trail with Perinton Town Historian, Bill Porray. This first phase, which ran up a price tag of $850K between design and construction, began in February.
View of the Erie Canal above Fairport - John Kucko
The cost of such a large project has raised concerns among some that village residents’ taxes may be impacted. The project’s expected total cost of $2.45M, with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) contribution of $300K, the Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) contribution of $500K, the Canal Corporation contribution of $150K, still leaves the Village of Fairport responsible for $1.15M. However, residents are assured they need not worry. The Project, say officials, has been incorporated into the village’s long-term capital plan, and there will be no expected tax increases due to the project. Village officials believe firmly that the Canal is an important piece of Fairport’s history and a defining element of the village. Therefore, the Village seized the opportunity to invest and enhance an existing asset that provides for recreation, community gatherings and residential pride throughout the Fairport community. Erie Canal, Fairport - John Kucko
The second phase of the Project is slated to begin in November, which incidentally is when Fairport’s Lift Bridge is expected to be substantially complete. Both reflect positively on the Village’s commitment to being “Fairport on the Rise.” The Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project Phase II will take place on the northwest bank of the Erie Canal. The project will include all new docks and dock utilities, lighting, a new non-motorized, small craft boat launch, and ADA accessible features throughout (e.g. kayak launch, observation deck). There will be multi-mode access and signage on the Lift Bridge. Docks will extend to the canal path to encourage access to the water and will also be utilized for events and staging. Phase II of the Project is scheduled for completion in fall 2021.

Puzzle Answers This Week THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

How do I get rid of bishop’s weed? It invaded a bed of lily of the valley and I donít want to kill that as well. - Kathleen C. Bishop’s weed has an incredibly dense root system which is quite difficult to eradicate. You would need to remove the lily of the valley plants, then smother the entire bed for at least six growing months; a year would be more effective. The ground is frozen during December,
January, February, and March, so plants are dormant, not growing. Before replanting your lily of the valley, completely remove all current soil from the roots by soaking and using a forceful hose. Cover the area with landscape fabric or 6 layers of newspaper with overlapping edges, then top with several inches of mulch. Secure the edges with stones or branches. The newspapers will gradually disintegrate, but you would need to pull out the landscape fabric. If you don’t remove the fabric, it will
gradually break down in to smaller pieces, become mixed into the soil, and impede root growth. Watch the edges of this area during growing months, and spray any bishop’s weed plants that emerge with herbicide.
