Black cats once became so highly valued that some people could not afford to have them. That’s because fishermen and their wives saw black cats as good luck. Cats were even allowed to ride aboard ships. Not only could they catch errant rodents, but also they may have been charms for safe travels.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Consider this your fall reminder to schedule a visit from a chimney sweep, if you haven’t already. As temperatures drop, you’ll be tempted to light up the fireplace, and you’ll want it checked for any animal intrusion, creosote buildup or mortar that needs repairing.

airport Central School District’s Dave Dunn, principal at Martha Brown Middle School, has been named a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (AESMP), which recognizes accomplished elementary and middle-level principals from across the nation and abroad as a part of its annual National Distinguished Principals (NDP) program. Dunn was previously selected as the 2019 New York State Middle School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) and NAESP. Dunn, as part of the 2019 class of NDPs, was honored during a two-day event in Washington, D.C. that culminates with an awards banquet on Oct. 11. “This recognition has been a culmination of my many years in Fairport as a teacher and principal,” said Dunn. “I am a product of Fairport, of the staff, students and community whom I have all worked with over the past 43 years. This is an acknowledgement that I have embraced our Fairport community, and the community has embraced me.” As the principal of Martha Brown for the past 25 years, Dunn embodies Dave Dunn... the spirit of the Fairport is committed community, having been a lifelong resident. Before his to student years in administration, he success. was a mathematics teacher. ~ Brett Provenzano, Dunn has spent his entire Superintendent of Schools 43-year career at Fairport CSD. “Dave Dunn is driven by a deep-seated passion to help our young adolescents experience social and academic success,” said Superintendent of Schools Brett Provenzano. “Above all, he is a caring presence, one who his students and colleagues view as being instrumental to their school experience. He is dedicated to serving others, passionate about making a difference, and committed to student success.” Principal honorees are selected by NAESP state affiliates and by committees representing private

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

and overseas schools. Criteria for selection of the principals require that the honorees are active principals of schools where programs are designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students and where there are firmly established community ties with parents and local business organizations. It is particularly fitting to acknowledge the work of principals in October because it is National Principals Month, which was established to recognize and honor the contributions of school principals toward the success of the nation’s students and encourage awareness of their significance. Established in 1921, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) leads in the advocacy and support for elementary and middle school principals in the United States and internationally. NAESP supports principals as the primary catalysts for creating lasting foundations for learning through policy and professional learning, advocacy, programs, and resources for effective instructional leadership. NAESP advances the profession on behalf of all principals, providing specialized support and mentoring for early career principals. Key focus areas include pre-K-3 education, school safety, technology and digital learning, and capacity-building educator evaluation. For more information about NAESP, visit www.naesp.org. Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

For more information www.DowntownCanandaigua.com or Facebook.com/CanandaiguaBID Thank you to Toyota of Batavia, especially salesperson Christopher Brown, Director of Finance Anthony Gallo, and Sales manager Pat Rapone. Leadership starts from the top down, and it is extremely evident. My 84-year-old mother’s van broke down unexpectedly and she needed something fast without breaking her budget. The quality of empathy, mercy and kindness they showed walking her through the process from start to finish only took a day. They didn’t try to sell her on a car she couldn’t afford. We ended up with a brand new 2019 car, that when I looked at other dealerships were all

My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Bill Semmel & Sue Tillotson Semmel of York were married on October 18, 1969. They’re the proud parents of four children: Julie (Bob), Sean (Shelly), Brian (Laurie) and Kyle (Pia). In addition, they’ve been blessed with eight grandchildren and one great grandson… so far. Congratulations and much love from your family!

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Responding to the comment that a handicapped person should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. I have been told a man checked it out in mid-June and still has

Page 10

priced $5000 higher. I am a person that when I see a business treating people well, I tell others about them.

Thank you to the townships and the state for keeping the sides of the roads mowed. It helps to see deer and wildlife when driving at night and helps deter them from feeding at roadside. And in doing so, prevents deer-to-car accidents. It’s so nice to know our safety and the safety of the wildlife is still being kept in mind

it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them.

Can Nothing be Done for Severe Back Pain? ---

stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. -- Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus risks of DMSO? -- W.R.

ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved

by the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Light Hill is a two-bed comfort care home, full of light and positive energy. Our home is an alternative to a nursing home, hospital, or home care. Our primary focus is providing a peaceful quality existence at endof-life guided by the hospice philosophy. Our goal is to support our resident guests as they experience physical, emotional and spiritual changes, as well as support their loved ones. Classes will start mid-October and end before Thanksgiving. PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE

PEST CONTROL

Have your house protected before the mice and rats come in. Mice and rat removal $175.00 One Year Warranty

With over 21 years’ experience, we will treat your home, business, or cottage so you’re bug-free Call and book now all season!

Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes.

585-405-1171

By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

Removing The Mystery From A Prostate Cancer Diagnosis (NAPS)—According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 173,000 new diagnoses are expected in the U.S. this year, fortunately, this disease can be treated successfully, especially if caught early. What To Do If you’re 50 or older or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should speak to your doctor about whether screening for the disease is right for you. Understanding Prostate Cancer “In the early stages, the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are no symptoms at all,” says Deepak A. Kapoor, M.D., founder of the non-profit, Integrated Medical Foundation, and President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Stage one is diagnosed very early and confined to the prostate. At this stage, the patient is unlikely to be experiencing any symptoms. He may not need treatment beyond regular follow-up blood tests, exams and possibly biopsies. The disease is very treatable. When diagnosed early, the five-year relative survival rate is almost 100 percent. Why Do Some Men Resist Routine Screenings? Many men are embarrassed by the digital rectal exam, concerned about treatment or fear they can’t afford it. Some Answers Testing: Since the 1980s, prostate cancer was being diagnosed with a simple blood test, the PSA. It checks the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood. In the past, there was controversy about whether having a prostate cancer screening done was beneficial or if it produced more harmful effects due to complications from over-testing. PSA testing was the best thing available for a long time. New tools now exist that provide much more information, giving predictability about the aggressiveness of the cancer and data to help urologists safely manage their patients’ disease. With this information, urologists have higher numbers of appropriate candidates on active surveillance regimens. Using tests such as the Gleason grade score, overall patient health and risk factors—age, race, ethnicity, family history and exposure to Agent Orange—urologists can determine with confidence how aggressive the cancer is and which patients will do well on active surveillance. They will also know which therapy options will be the most optimal for the patient. Making it easier for doctors and their patients to do this testing is the full-range of diagnostic equipment and supplies available through the trusted advisors at Henry Schein Medical, a provider of medical and surgical supplies to health care professionals. Treatments: There are many ways to treat prostate cancer, including hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and cryoablation. The newest innovation being successfully utilized is immunotherapy, which uses your own immune system to identify, target and destroy the cancer cells without harming the body’s own “good cells.” Your doctor can help you decide what’s best for you. It is important to remember that you have the most options available when prostate cancer is diagnosed early and is in the most treatable stage. It is important for men to be vigilant with their routine screenings. Paying: Many insurance policies will pay for diagnostic tests and in some places, such as New York State, there’s no co-pay or co-insurance cost sharing responsibility for diagnostic prostate cancer screenings (with such policies). This puts PSAs on the same level as mammograms, thanks to efforts of advocates and doctors such as those at Advanced Urology Centers of New York, one of the largest urology group practices in the country. Learn More For further facts, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer. org and Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF) https://imfcares.org/. IMF provides screenings, education and support services FREE. Learning about prostate cancer early can save your life—and can be easier than many men realize.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 22, 1975, Air Force Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, is given a “general” discharge after publicly declaring his homosexuality. Matlovic’s discharge was later upgraded to “honorable,” and he was buried with full military honors in 1988. * On Oct. 23, 1989, 23 people are killed in a series of explosions sparked by an ethylene leak at a Phillips Petroleum plant in Pasadena, Texas. The blasts were caused by inadequate safety procedures. * On Oct. 27, 2006, the last Ford Taurus rolls off the assembly line in Hapeville, Georgia. The keys to the silver car went to 85-year-old Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, who added it to his automobile collection.
