The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes 22 different cat breeds that are capable of producing solid black coats. These domestic cats can be mixed or specific breeds. Black is one of the three basic colors of cats that can be called “pure.” The other two are red and white. All other colors and patterns of cats are a combination of black, white and red. The Bombay breed of cat was selectively bred to be pure black. Most other black coats occur through random genetics.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.”
Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines.
Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

Witches: Images of witches riding broomsticks are everywhere come Halloween, and witch costumes remain a standard. Almanac.com indicates that, during the Middle Ages, women who practiced divination were dubbed “witches,” from the Anglo-Saxon word “wicce,” or “wise one.” It was believed the witches could go into a trancelike state, and would do so in front of their fireplaces. Superstitious people believed the witches could fly out of their chimneys on broomsticks and terrorize others with magical deeds.
One of the easiest and most
defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Data from the GLSEN® 2019 National School Climate Survey indicates that 59 percent of LGBTQ students felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. Roughly one-third of LGBTQ students indicated they had missed at least one entire day of school in the month preceding their participation in the survey because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable, while just under 9 percent admitted missing four or more days during that span. The survey consisted of more than 16,000 students between the ages of 13 and 21 and represented students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and Guam. Results from the 2021 survey will be available in fall 2022. Spirit Day is an effort to highlight and support programming that counters the dangerous effects of bullying of LGBTQ youth. Every blade in the field, every leaf in the forest, lays down its life in its season, as beautifully as it was taken up. It is the pastime of a full quarter of the year. Dead trees, sere leaves, dried grass and herbs—are not these a good part of our life? And what is that pride of our autumnal scenery but the hectic flush, the sallow and cadaverous countenance of vegetation? its painted throes, with the November air for canvas?

HALLOWEEN AND TRICK-OR-TREATING
Come October, people across the United States and various other countries participate in a tradition that has been around for some time.Trick-or-treating, which involves costumed children going door-to-door in the neighborhood asking for candy, is a staple of fall. While the exact origins of Halloween and trick-or-treating are hard to pin down, historians believe that Halloween came from a holiday known as Samhain, which ancient Brits and Celts once celebrated in recognition of the onset of winter. During Samhain, revelers believed that the world of the gods and ghosts was open and that these beings played tricks on the mortals. In turn, mortals lit bonfires and wore costumes so they would be unrecognizable to the ghosts. Unlike the lighthearted activities of today’s Halloween, ritualistic sacrifices and other more sinister events also took place 2,000 years ago on Samhain. Once Christianity took root in formally Celtic locales, the tide of Samhain celebrations turned and a focus was placed on celebrating the holy and dead in more meaningful ways onAll Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). In fact, Halloween, which comes from All Hallows Eve (hallow meaning “holy”), offered an opportunity to come together and pray, dress in costumes of hallowed saints and evil spirits, and act out the battles of good versus evil. Poor individuals also were known to travel to the homes of more fortunate individuals and receive pastries known as “soul cakes” in exchange for a promise to pray for that homeowner’s deceased relatives. The tradition of “souling” eventually gave way to trick-or-treating. History.com says it is unknown when the term “trick-or-treat” came into the vernacular. However, the phrase has at least been in use since 1951, when the popular “Peanuts” comics published a Halloween edition. The title “Trick or Treat” also was used on a Disney cartoon featuring Donald Duck in 1952.

The Haunting History of Union Tavern in Sea Breeze
STORY BY SUZIE WELLS
TheUnionTaverninRochester has a rich history, dating back to the early 19th century, and an eerie reputation that keeps visitors intrigued. e building and its grounds are not just a hub for good food and drinks but are also home to numerous ghost stories that continue to stir curiosity.
According to Rochester Ghostwalks and the Haunted History Trail of New York State, the land where the Union Tavern stands today was purchased in 1819 by Sylvester Woodman, a retired sea captain and rumored ex-pirate. Woodman bought 100 acres of land, along with nearly all the shoreline of what is now the Sea Breeze area of Irondequoit. A er his wife Abigail passed in 1830, she was buried just a few hundred yards from their farmhouse, and Sylvester was laid to rest beside her years later.
e original farmhouse was torn down in the mid-1800s and replaced with a more modern brick home by Captain Samuel Bradstreet VI, a veteran of the Black Hawk War and Irondequoit Town Supervisor at the time. Bradstreet planted trees on both sides of what is now Culver Rd., and began a farmer’s life with his wife Lavinia, who worked as a tailoress. ey raised 8 children on their grand farm of 7 horses, 4 milk cows, 4 working oxen, 12 cattle, 140 sheep, 20 pigs, and wheat, corn, and oat crops.
In the mid-1930s, the house transitioned from a private residence to a public establishment, serving various purposes, including apartments, restaurants, and taverns. Jim “Barney” Barnash and Steve Sahs co-owned the property and ran e Reunion Inn from 1971-2019, converting the second floor apartments into a dining room and adding a Victorian-style staircase in 1976.
Current owners, Don and Kelly Bush, purchased the establishment in 2019 and have made it a point to embrace its history, even hosting ghost story events since 2004. e Union Tavern has been a featured site for paranormal investigations, with groups such as the Monroe County Paranormal Investigators visiting the property. It was also spotlighted on Ghost Show.
e Union Tavern is a well-known stop on the Haunted History Trail of New York State, with patrons and staff reporting numerous unexplained occurrences.Fromcoldspotsandthescentofcigarettesmokeinparticular rooms to doors opening on their own, the tavern has seen its fair share of paranormal activity. According to the Haunted History Trail, visitors have reported sightings of a ghostly woman standing near the fireplace, and others have experienced being touched when no one else was around. Whistling sounds are sometimes heard coming from upstairs, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
Some of these ghosts are believed to be former residents including Lavinia Bradstreet or former slaves who used e Reunion Inn as an Underground Railroad stop. e history of the building’s use as a speakeasy during Prohibition also contributes to the ghostly lore. One ghost is quite possibly “eccentric Mr. Hallie,” owner of Hallie’s Steak House, there before e Reunion Inn. A current owner has even seen a red-headed female spirit and thinks it may be his mother’s ghost.
Steve Sahs recounts that in 1973, a hand with “boney” fingers tugged on his arm as he changed a keg in the basement. “It was pretty scary,” Sahs said, “I locked myself in the walk-in cooler until I couldn’t stand the cold anymore.” Sahs says he didn’t share the experience until six months later when another employee told him a similar occurrence happened to him.
Although there is no record of the Woodmans having any children, rumors suggest that a large immovable stone in the basement may indicate the Woodmans lost a child before baptism and buried it on the property. Others speculate the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad, or that the stone hid the family’s valuables during a time when banks weren’t readily available.
Whether you’re drawn to its history or its haunted reputation, the Union Tavern offers an unforgettable experience with the possibility of an unexpected

Although apple bobbing still occurs today, many eschew the tradition because of germs. The concept of sticking one’s face into a communal bucket of water isn’t appealing in a society that prioritizes sanitary behavior. Those who grew up bobbing for apples and want to continue the tradition in a more sanitary way can create individualized games. Instead of one large bucket, purchase smaller buckets and fill them with water. Place a couple of apples in each bucket and let participants race to see who can grab an apple first.

CRANE’S AUTOMOTIVE
PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
The ovaries make most of the estrogen that is made by the body. Treatments that stop or lower the amount of estrogen made by the ovaries include surgery to remove the ovaries, radiation therapy, or taking certain drugs. This is called ovarian ablation.
Premenopausal women who have a high risk of breast cancer due to certain changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may choose to have a risk-reducing oophorectomy (the removal of both ovaries when there are no signs of cancer). This decreases the amount of estrogen made by the body and lowers the risk of breast cancer. Riskreducing oophorectomy also lowers the risk of breast cancer in normal premenopausal women and in women with an increased risk of breast cancer due to radiation to the chest. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling before making this decision. The sudden drop in estrogen levels may cause the symptoms of menopause to begin. These include hot flashes, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and depression. Long-term effects include decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness, and decreased bone density.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
WHY IS MY CAT SCRATCHING SO MUCH?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I noticed that my long-haired cat, Charlie, is scratching many times per day. He also is shedding more than usual -- mostly undercoat, rather than hair. What’s going on? I can’t see any evidence of fleas on his coat or skin. -- Dan in Colorado Springs
DEAR DAN: Fleas are o en the first thing we think of when a cat starts scratching incessantly, but other conditions could be causing skin irritation. And it may be hard to see lesions or hot spots, especially in long-haired cats. Charlie’s undercoat is coming out because he’s really scratching those spots.
e best thing to do is take Charlie to the veterinarian. Some itching issues have an external cause and can be eased pretty quickly. But some chronic conditions and diseases have itching as one symptom, and only your vet can diagnose these.
Make sure to tell the veterinarian where exactly Charlie is scratching the most. e vet, with an assistant holding Charlie still, will check these areas more closely for broken skin, lesions, rash and evidence of fleas. ey’ll also take skin scrapings and fur samples to see if mites are to blame or if there’s a bacterial or yeast infection. Blood samples should be taken to test for underlying medical conditions and/or specific allergies. ey may send you home with specimen kits to collect urine and poop and bring them in for analysis, too.
e vet will advise you on whether to use a prescription or over-thecounter medication to ease Charlie’s itching. When the tests come back (some may be same-day, others may need to go to a lab), they’ll know the best treatment path to take.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

Press seams of puff pastry sheet together. Cut sheet into quarters then each quarter into six pieces.
Use rolling pin to flatten each piece of pastry into square shape. Place one square into each muffin cup.
Put 1/2 teaspoon brie, 1 teaspoon apple butter and 1/2 teaspoon chopped pecans into each muffin cup.
Bake 13-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

A LOOK AT THE OLDEST HALLOWEEN TRADITION
Bobbing for apples: Bobbing for apples is not quite as popular as it once was, as more people have become concerned about spreading germs. During the Roman festival for Pomona, which occurred around November 1, Pomona, the goddess of fruit and orchards, was celebrated. Romans believed the first person to catch a bobbing apple with his or her teeth would be the first to marry. It also was believed apple peels contained the secrets to true love.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Two-Year-Old
Incision
Occasionally Secretes Fluid
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old, very active male. My left Achilles tendon severed two years ago, but it was surgically repaired. I had an 8-inch incision that has totally healed, with the exception of one small area about the size of the lead of a pencil. It’s 3 inches above my heel. This small area would close up for a few days, then reopen with small amounts of off-white fluid oozing from the little hole.
Sometimes I apply Iodosorb, which keeps the area dry for a while. But, for whatever reason, showers seem to make the incision release fluid. I apply a bandage over the wound for most sporting or exercise events, just so that it doesn’t get rubbed by the top of my shoe. Is there any solution to this, or do I just have to live with it?
-- R.M.
ANSWER: The Achilles tendon is a thick, tough piece of connective tissue between the calf muscles and the heel bone. It can rupture under extreme trauma (often sports injuries), in people who have weakness of the tendon, or due to treatment with antibiotics that are in the quinolone class, such as ciprofloxacin. When repairing the tendon, the surgeon uses sutures or wires to put it back together.
A residual wound defect is quite concerning to me. The foreign material in the tendon is at a high risk for infection. It’s possible that there is an infection, which led to a fistula (an abnormal connection) between the tendon.
I definitely recommend going back to see the surgeon. They may want to do further testing (possibly imaging) to see if there is any evidence of an infection in the repaired tendon.

An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester
HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER
Be willing to accept help. It’s easy for cancer patients to feel like they’re suddenly seen as charity cases upon sharing their diagnosis with an employer and their colleagues. But offers to help come from a good place, and patients would likely offer to help if the shoe was on the other foot and a colleague revealed a cancer diagnosis. It’s alright to tell people willing to help that you’ll let them know if you need anything if and when a difficult situation arises. In the meantime, thank them for their kindness and prepare to lighten your professional load as treatment begins.
BREAST CANCER PREVENTION
Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may help prevent cancer.
RISK FACTORS:
• Older age
• A personal history of breast cancer or benign (noncancer) breast disease
• Inherited risk of breast cancer
• Dense breasts
• Exposure of breast tissue to estrogen made in the body
• Taking hormone therapy for symptoms of menopause
• Radiation therapy to the breast or chest
• Obesity
• Drinking alcohol
PROTECTIVE FACTORS:
• Less exposure of breast tissue to estrogen made by the body
• Taking estrogen-only hormone therapy after hysterectomy, selective estrogen receptor modulators, or aromatase inhibitors and inactivators
• Estrogen-only hormone therapy after hysterectomy
• Selective estrogen receptor modulators
• Aromatase inhibitors and inactivators
• Risk-reducing mastectomy
• Ovarian ablation
• Getting enough exercise
• It is not clear whether the following affect the risk of breast cancer:
• Oral contraceptives
• Environment
• Studies have shown that some factors have little or no effect on the risk of breast cancer.
• Cancer prevention clinical trials are used to study ways to prevent cancer.
• New ways to prevent breast cancer are being studied in clinical trials.
The breath of autumn had already passed along the foliage, and a coming death had spread over its hues golden, brown and crimson—a strange gaiety of decay, which, with all its beauty, carries an idea of sadness into one’s heart.

HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Find a support group. Professional support groups are great resources for coping with a cancer journey. Supporting a person with cancer takes its own unique toll, particularly when caring for a spouse, child or mother with breast cancer. Support groups for support networks can be helpful.

VENT
We just moved to [local town] and live on [local road]. At one end of the road the speed limit is 45 and at the other end it is 30. No other speed limit is posted. Cars go by our house 55 +++. We have farm tractors/joggers/bikers/horses going by all day. It should be 45 all the way til the village line. I emailed the town highway about speed limits about 3 months ago. Maybe they are way to busy to read it. Also there are many deer in the area
There is nothing quite like fall in upstate New York. We recently had visitors from out of state and they could not get over the beautiful foliage all around the area. Whether it’s the Finger Lakes, Letchworth State Park or just 75 degree sunny days in mid October, sometimes we take our surroundings for granted and it takes visitors to remind us just how lucky we are.
Freedom on display
Driving down local streets and seeing neighbors displaying their choice of political sign demonstrates what a great country we live in. We can voice our opinions and coexist with a neighbor who may have differing views. I’m thankful for a democracy that encourages open dialogue, mutual respect, and allows diversity of opinions.
machines
I recently spent a couple of days at [local casino] and was shocked and appalled that almost all the slot machines had racist imagery, specifically seeming to be aimed at Asian cultures. They feature caricatures of Japanese women and other offensive stereotypes like dragons. I was wondering if there would be interest locally in helping eradicate these awful slot machines. I love to gamble and this just puts a damper on the whole thing.
RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density.
Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.
