POLL According to House Beautiful, in Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally set up and decorated quite late in December, often on Christmas Eve. Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. Psychologists say decorating early spikes people’s happy hormone, dopamine, so perhaps decorations help make/keep people happy longer. If you decorate for Christmas, when do you decorate your home? - Early November - After Thanksgiving - At first snowfall

How to show your support for veterans

S

upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans. There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. • Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans. Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated. • Support legislation that supports veterans. Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media. • Help raise awareness about homeless veterans. Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street. Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted. Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

FIRE SAFETY PROTOCOLS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN HOLIDAY DECORATING Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. Most areas now require new homes be built exclusively with GFCIs, which are recognizable because they feature two buttons between the outlets. But older homes may not be equipped with GFCIs, particularly with exterior outlets. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets. Page 9

Lorraine Slomovic: A Trailblazing Nurse Anesthetist’s Journey Through Service BY SUZIE WELLS

D

aughter of a Marine, Lieutenant Colonel Lorraine Slomovic is a local legend known for her dedication, service, and her profound commitment to others. Her illustrious career as a retired US Army nurse anesthetist (known as a 66 Foxtrot) spans two decades, leaving an indelible mark in the field. Lorraine joined the reserves to fund her anesthetist education, but stayed on through five deployments over twenty years, supporting her team along the way, often on a moment’s notice, despite four children at home. Lorraine served with the 1982nd Fast Forward Surgical Team (FFST), embedded with a special forces team, offering medical backup for the frontline, providing timely access to surgery for wounded soldiers. The concept arose after the Persian Gulf War, recognizing the need to expedite life-saving procedures. Lorraine, along with her team, operated in a mobile capacity, carrying essential equipment on their backs and setting up in a variety of facilities wherever they were needed. The team’s impact was profound, resulting in a substantial decrease in fatality rates. Lorraine’s story also sheds light on the unique challenges faced by reservists. Despite the support on a regular / full-time / career military base, reservists face a variety of emotional challenges. Being away from family was hard, especially with small children in a time before cell phones, when satellite phone calls provided disappointingly sparse communication with her loved ones. And Lorraine says activation on a moment’s notice once meant she scrambled in the four days’ notice to receive urgent dental care before deployment. Military families make sacrifices for the sake of the missions, and Lorraine’s was no exception.

Lorraine’s deployments such as in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom were a blend of duty and cultural exchange. Her favorite moments were the interactions with the Iraqi people. Beyond the headlines and news reports, she and her teammates relished time interacting with the women and children of the area. They for instance provided medical supplies to women and children’s hospitals, reinforcing the shared humanity that transcends borders, that people everywhere have dreams, goals, family, friends, the same sort of life that we have. She says learning a bit of the language and interacting with the people was such a joy after the trauma of treating the wounded warriors. The relentless nature of Lorraine’s deployments took a toll on her mental well-being. Living day after day in constant danger and the need for self-defense left a mark. The experiences she faced in Iraq were traumatic, underscoring the importance of mental health

support for veterans. She says Bloomfield and Canandaigua have great programs such as Wounded Warriors for veterans and military families, but she has suffered PTSD since deployment. After her full retirement, Lorraine remained active in endeavors close to her heart. She initially got involved with an online women’s veterans group, but found her greater purpose with her family and Mission Mustang, a program in which Army veterans collaborate with wild mustangs rescued from the Department of Land Management, now operated out of the Equicenter in Mendon. She also volunteers in anesthetist missions in countries such as Guatemala and Venezuela, offering her services for the greater good. In retirement, Lorraine cherishes moments with her grandchildren, but humbly reflects on the value of her career in the reserves. Though she relishes her career with Rochester General and Thompson Hospitals, she appreciates her experience helping around the world with the Army Reserves. She encourages prospective reservists to engage with recruiters from all branches to fully understand options and opportunities available. She says the military is a great way to get an incredible education and see the world. She says, “I never thought I’d be in Cairo, Baghdad, Italy. Join the Army and see the world, as they say.” She tells of her nephew who joined as an infantryman after 9/11, learning how to make and run generators, and in civilian life, he is now an integral part of a lucrative civilian company. In the military, you learn very useful tools and trades, she says. Lorraine Slomovic’s story is a testament to the power of service, resilience, and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Her legacy serves as an inspiration for generations to come, reminding us all of the potential we hold to make a difference in the world. Love to write? DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. The Honeoye Community should be proud of themselves for making that night perfect from start to finish. Looking forward to next year.

Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? I’m not stooping to your level. Blow all your leaves into my yard. I don’t care. The joke is on you. Your behavior reflects on you. Not me. Speeders To all the drivers that speed down [local road] with their loud vehicles, get a life. We have walkers and bicyclists who walk and ride all day on this road and you are endangering them along with other drivers who obey the law. You think your loud vehicles are cool, but guess what, they are not. So why don’t you go hang out in the kiddie park where you all belong because none of you should have a license. Hopefully the police will read this and start handing out tickets on [local road] and stop you morons from injuring someone or god forgive KILLING THEM. Here’s a Tip * “For that nagging toilet where the chain on the flush lever keeps getting stuck, here’s what I do: Trash that chain and use some curling ribbon. Tie it on and adjust the length. Once you’ve got it set, you shouldn’t have to mess with it again for a very long time!” -- M. in Minnesota * Need pumpkin pie spice? Mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves for each teaspoon needed. * “Clearance aisles and sales are a savvy shopper’s best friend. I buy age-appropriate games and toys all year from sales rack and with coupons, so that I am always armed with birthday presents and donations to holiday drives.” -A.P. in Pennsylvania * Here’s a great cooking hint: When you want to sear meat, make sure you pat it dry using either paper towels or a kitchen cloth specifically for that purpose. Any moisture on the meat will cause it to steam cook. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. Following the instructions on the package, thaw the puff pastry. This will take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of pastry. You should be able to unfold it without it breaking. Set aside. 2. Pulse the turkey in a food processor until it is the consistency of ground beef. Add 2 of the eggs, the chicken stock, the Marsala, and the butter. Pulse again briefly, until just combined. 3. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface until it is a 12- or 13-inch square. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the pastry on top. 4. Form the minced turkey mixture into a log and position it down the center of the prepared puff pastry. Make an indentation down the length of the turkey and place the celery, mushrooms, and cranberry chutney along the indentation. Cover the indentation with the meat, forming a log once again. 5. Wrap the puff pastry around the turkey, neatly folding the ends and top together, rolling or tucking the edges together, and pinching to seal any gaps. Make the pastrycovered log as round as possible, like a Yule log — try to avoid a flattened version, like a strudel. 6. Preheat the oven to 450 F. 7. Combine the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl or cup. Stir well until completely mixed. Brush the roulade with the egg wash, being careful to brush every bit of the exposed pastry. 8. Bake for 10 minutes at 450 F, then reduce the heat to 375 F. Continue to bake for 30 to 45 minutes longer, until the pastry has risen and is a toasty, golden color and the turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165 F. Generally speaking, once the pastry has cooked, the meat will be cooked, too. Remove the roulade from the oven. Transfer it to a serving platter, using the parchment paper to help you. Allow to rest for about 10 minutes. 9. Slice and serve, garnishing with the parsley and served with a bowl of extra cranberry chutney.

PREPARE NOW FOR ELECTION DAY Elections decide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsew here in the w orld many people have no say w ith regard to their political leaders, w hich only emphasizes the importance of partic ipating in the elec tion process w henever you’re afforded the opportunity to do so. The first step to prepare for Election Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age, legal residency and citizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County clerks, municipal offices as w ell as the Division of M otor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional information is available online.

Voter registration may have to be filed several weeks to a month in advance of Election Day in order for you to be eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the time of an election, a person typically may cast a provisional vote, which will then be considered after other ballots are counted. Once your eligibility has been verified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local new spapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as w ell. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November is when national elections take place in the United States. Before voting, voters should researc h the respec tive candidates for each election. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their w ebsites as w ell as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Deciding w ho to vote for requires more than just siding w ith a particular political party. Read as muc h as you c an on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This w ill help you make the best decision possible. In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need special assistance, contact your local elections office for information, advice, and educational materials about voting equipment and details on access to the polling place, including designated parking. Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answ er additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guide also may include information about certain issues that w ill require your vote. EASTWAY EDITION

AN EASY WAY TO CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time w ith him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their servic e, is a great w ay to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran’s spirits at the same time. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The blue whale is earth’s largest living creature, surpassing even most dinosaurs. Not only can it reach over 100 feet in length and weigh more than 100 tons, but its heart can tip the scale at 1,300 pounds and is the size of a small car, while its arteries are big enough for a full-grown human to swim through -- not that we recommend you go for a swim and attempt it. * In 2007, Iran claimed 14 squirrels found near the nation’s borders were actually spies. * The record for most times being hit by a baseball pitch -- a whopping 287 -- belongs to Hughie Jennings, who finally got smart and retired in 1918. Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended

Today’s hearing aids are barely visible, highly effective and easy to afford.

We Listen More...To Help You Hear Better! Offices in Victor • Newark

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand. I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success. I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar. Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints. Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee. I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing. There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis. The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly. FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Behaving well around service animals

Klondike is a 24 year old Goffins Cockatoo. He is very playful and loves kids. He doesn’t fly but walks around the house like he’s the boss. He chases the cat and eats her food just because he can. He loves company, especially if they come with toys or big tools. He likes watermelon, rye toast, Ritz crackers and going to McDonalds for French fries. Wrap him in a warm towel or put him in a warm room Orin sunshine to make him happy!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you kindly remind your readers that service animals and companion animals are not there for other people’s amusement? Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York

A PHOTO!SEND US and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com • Share With Us or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well. With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors. It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal. -- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal. -- Guide/service dogs have the right of way. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.
