Shopping local gives your community’s artists and vendors exposure. Small communities are often full of incredibly talented artists who can’t afford shop space until their business takes off, leading them to partner with local businesses to sell their products at a storefront. So when you shop local, you give those craftspeople the exposure and funding they need to grow their business.

Thanksgiving should be one of the greatest holidays that we could have, but sadly even those that call themselves Christians only have visions of a meal and football to look forward to. The Apostle Paul wrote, “that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (II Timonthy 3:1-2). The lack of genuine thankfulness to God is a symptom that proves we’re in the last days for sure. Give praise and glory to God so you will not be found out to be the real turkey this Thanksgiving.

Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida

Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace Established 1972 • www.gvcp.org

F.F. TAXIDERMY

DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it.

Hearing loss can leave you feeling isolated and insecure.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Are Big Dogs Dangerous Pets for Seniors?

Talk to us today and find out what the latest, barely visible hearing aid technology can do for you!

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read that a large percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses and provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil and rub onto the chest. There also is some evidence that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to cleansing products can help kill dust mites around the house.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time.

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A Paris morgue needed help identifying bodies in the 1860s, so decided to open its doors to the public. They probably underestimated people’s morbid curiosity, though, as soon 40,000 people a day were coming to look at corpses.

S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.

Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Cookie sheets make great temporary mud and moisture trays for dirty shoes. Stash one at the entry to your home, and you will have less dirt tracked across your floors. * “To make your drains freshsmelling, shake a half-cup of baking soda into the drain. Then pour 2 cups of vinegar that you have warmed on the stove. It will froth and bubble. When it’s done, run the hot water and give it a little scrub.” -- R.C. in Idaho * Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level. * “Keep knitting yarn in check with empty tissue boxes. Set your yarn ball inside the box, and let the string lead out of the top. When not in use, tape the string to the side of the box. Boxes can be stacked and stored for future projects.” -- C.W. in Indiana

‘Tis the season to be grateful, and we can’t thank you enough for making our year so special!

* “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cinnamon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois * Visit the dollar store for low-cost toys to use on car or airplane trips. You can get several busy toys and dole them out one at a time. Most parents will attest to what a lifesaver this can be.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Establish an online memorial website. If you want to share stories, photos and anecdotes about your loved one with the world, a memorial website is a great way to do so. Create the site and share your own feelings before soliciting others to share their thoughts and anecdotes as well.

MONUMENTAL MEMORIES

Full range of cemetery memorials & services. Many granite stones, colors, shapes & engraving options on display. Friendly, caring & here to help! Proprietors: David & Kathy Cooper (585) 261-0012 5650 County Rd. #41, Farmington, NY 14425 Tues.-Sat. 10-5 or by appointment.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives. How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver

Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

Puzzle Answers This Week

Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.

FOUND IN A CAN

Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

CARPET/FLOORING CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Serendipity: How a Lost GoPro Camera became a House Payment BY DP DUNN

O

nce upon a time, in August, during a torrential rain, the storm drain clogged and the garage flooded. Again. A service was called. They removed two feet of roots from the system.

Problem solved, right? Nope. The town of Webster’s Highway department sent a crew and two big trucks. They removed a bushel’s worth of hard sediment from the easement. Now it’s fixed, as evidenced by more than an inch of rain over the last weekend of October. Hegedorn’s Donuts are a great way to say ‘Thank you.’ Monday morning, fresh from the oven to the crew at Webster Highway at 6:45 AM. It is the Feast of All Saints, and Mass is at 9; what to do for 90 minutes? Webster Park’s shoreline was wild with waves and wind. The normally calm lake was alive. Waves crashed along the pier and the sidewalk on the south shore. Walking to the end of the pier, without getting soaked, might be a challenge. Somewhere along the sidewalk, a bright fluorescent orange rectangle beckoned. It was heavy. Upon closer examination, it was a GoPro camera in what GoPro calls a ‘floaty case.’ These things ain’t cheap. A bit of research, a call to GoPro and the serial number was found. GoPro had no record of the camera having been reported as lost. The memory card was accessible and undamaged. Photos were found. A local blogger, Missy Rosenberry, writes a wonderful blog on the happenings in Webster. You can read her work at WebsterOnTheWeb. com. An email to Missy, with photos extracted from the memory card, and a simple request: can you help reunite the camera with its owner? Within two hours of posting the article on her social media feeds, Missy got results! The first replies identified the house. A subsequent reply was from the camera’s owner. Ollie Bartholomew, his lovely wife Raquel, and their beautiful children were visiting family and friends in the Webster area last July. A bumpy jet ski ride on Lake Ontario jarred the GoPro’s magnetic mounting loose from the machine. GoPros can’t swim. Even with a scientifically

designed and remarkably engineered fluorescent orange ‘floaty case,’ they can’t float. Not when a heavy magnet is attached. Ollie circled his jet ski. Ollie dove for the camera. No luck; Ontario’s water was too murky and the Lake jealously hid her newly acquired GoPro camera well in deep water. Months passed. Neptune took mercy on Ollie and family and loosened the grip on the camera. It bobbed and floated. Winds blew and waves crashed. Maybe ducks and lake trout nudged it in the right direction. Somehow, providentially, it landed on a sidewalk, partially covered by driftwood and other detritus. By week’s end, through social media and emails, it was on its way back home.

“SERIOUSLY, YOU JUST CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP.”

Now, Ollie is a stand-up fellow. He knew how incredible the odds were against ever recovering this camera, and more importantly its contents of irreplaceable family memories. The scolding from Mrs. Ollie had made the magnitude of the loss breathtakingly clear to him. Ollie made a generous offer to both the Finder and the Blogger. ‘$100 to each of your favorite charities in gratitude for this find and your efforts!’ What a guy. As it happened, a friend and former co-worker of the Finder is fighting ALS. A GoFundMe page for Kevin Woolever, of Newark, has been established to aid in mortgage payments and medical equipment costs during his illness. The Finder asked Ollie to contribute. Missy, the Blogger, generously offered her reward to Kevin’s cause as well. What a gal! But Ollie and Missy went farther in their generosity. Each, through their social media sites, spread the word to others. And that, my friends, is how a clogged storm drain became a box of donuts, which led to a walk in the park, which led to the discovery of a lost GoPro camera, and became a contribution to an ill friend. Seriously, you just can’t make this stuff up. The End. Or is it? Join this Merry Band of adventurers, and read more on Missy’s Blog at https://websterontheweb.com/2021/11/06/the-powerof-kindness/. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Ever find yourself nodding off in a boring meeting? You might want to invest in a box of “Sleep Safe Tape,” a half-inch roll of transparent tape with pictures of eyes along its length that, as one source put it, allows users to “get the shuteye they need while appearing to be wide awake.” Of course, the game is up if you start to snore ... .

WE ARE SEEKING A MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT to help our Director of Environmental Services at Newark Manor. Looking for someone who has some understanding of general maintenance and is willing to learn! This position will be Part-Time up to 32 hours per week. Please call to inquire or email your resume to kdavids@newarkmanornursinghome.com

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

Hi my name is King Leo! I’m a 2-year-old domestic tabby! I am a dashing young man, who happens to be the biggest mama’s boy known to man (I’ll deny it if you ever bring it up). I love stealing my baby sisters rocking chair and pretending it’s my throne! I might be the King of my home, but I also have great knight skills in sneak attacks! I protect, I attack, and most of all I snack.

By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
