Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people will ever make, which only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families.Luxury cars,SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids with college educations to consider might find that less expensive

make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, which can be pricey, while buying outright affords vehicle owners to choose the level of coverage they are most comfortable with. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot with the pedal to the

Few drivers start thinking about resale value when driving a new car off of the dealership lot for the first time. Still enamored with that new car smell, drivers can be excused for not thinking of resale value as they put the pedal to the metal and speed off in their brand new ride.

But it’s never too early to start protecting a vehicle’s resale value, especially if you hope to recoup as much of your vehicle investment as possible when the time comes to sell your car or trade it in for a newer model.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS

Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an averageof11,500snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006.

Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

LITTLE IS MUCH

1 Corinthians 5:6 tells us: “Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? A little yeast in bread surely does enlarge the whole lump. One of Satan’s subtle suggestions is “its no big deal.” One piece of fruit from the forbidden tree sure did put all of us in a mess. King Saul spared the Amalekite king for the same thought. King David insisted Israel must be numbered against all good counsel. Thousands died for it. Soloman tells us it’s the little foxes that spoil the vines. Rat poison is only 2% aresenic! Ananias and Sapphira just told a little white lie, why it’s no big deal.Just slacking of a little bit of Bible reading, church attendance, is bigger than you think. Old adage, “an inch is near as a mile if you miss.”

Local Ceremonies Set for

‘WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA’ Event Honoring Veterans

velvet bow. e event is meant to recall the sacri ces that veterans and their families made by serving far from home during the holiday season.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. Wreaths Across America is on the web at wreathsacrossamerica.org and on Facebook at facebook.com/WAAHQ

Tnational Wreaths Across America Day.

e Bristol Hills Historical Society registered the two sites as o cial Wreaths Across America participants – Bristol Center Cemetery in the town of Bristol, and Coye Cemetery in South Bristol – and researched the names of the 52 veterans buried in the two cemeteries. e historical society then asked local residents to sponsor the purchase of holiday wreaths, which will be placed on the graves in ceremonies honoring each veteran individually.

e ceremonies, timed to coincide with the national event, will take place at noon on Dec. 17 at Bristol Center Cemetery, 4471 State Route 64, and at 2 p.m. at Coye Cemetery, at the corner of State Route 21 and Bopple Hill Road. e public is encouraged to attend.

e local organizer of the Historical Society’s events, A.J. Magnan, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired), said the designation of the two cemeteries was a test of the local enthusiasm for the Wreaths Across America program. Local sponsors far exceeded the goal of 52 wreaths, allowing the Historical Society to place wreaths at a third cemetery – Wilder Cemetery, where town co-founder Gamaliel Wilder, a Revolutionary War veteran, is buried.

“We were grati ed by the support local sponsors showed for this project,” Magnan said. “ is will help us expand to more local cemeteries in future years.”

e Wilder Cemetery ceremony, adjacent to Founders Cemetery in South Bristol, at 5903 State Route 64, will take place a er the Coye Cemetery ceremony.

e 30-year-old Wreaths Across America project places millions of wreaths on veterans’ graves in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and overseas. e wreaths are handcra ed in Columbia Falls, Me., of all-American balsam and hand-tied with a red

e Bristol Hills Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonpro t organization that was formed in 2020 through the merger of the historical societies of Bristol and South Bristol, N.Y. It cares for two of the region’s most distinctive historic buildings, the 1923 Grange Hall in Bristol Springs and the 1846 Methodist Episcopal Church in Bristol Center, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. e society’s website at bristolhillshistory.org and Facebook page at facebook.com/bhhistorical provide calendars of upcoming history presentations and other events, articles on local history, and a convenient way to become an annual donor at levels starting at $15 for individuals and $30 for families. More information on the local participation in Wreaths Across American can be found at bristolhillshistory.org/honoring-our-veterans.

Thank you for returning my wallet.

I want to say thank you to the gentleman who chased me down at Peppermints Restaurant on Tuesday 11/22 to return my wallet. There are some caring and honest people in this world. You saved me some real anxious moments because of the important materials I had.

Super Care at Highland

On 11/11, I was at Highland (6W) for an ailing gallbladder and a drain insertion. After the procedure, an excruciating pain overcame me, with pain so severe I could not sit down, my breathing became labored, and sweat poured from my body. Nurse Kari realized I was in trouble and stayed with me for 2 different meds to be put in my IV until the pain was brought under control. It took a while, but she stayed to ensure that the pain issue was resolved. Justin patiently helped me learn the procedures for caring for the drain system at home and rehearsing with me to be successful. There were many fine nurses who are working diligently to ensure their patients get wonderful care! Many thanks to you all!

It’s Stealing

This is to the people who got far more change back when paying for their meal. The check was around $50. You gave the waitress/server $100. They returned and gave back almost the same as the food bill. Sure the waitress/ server gave the wrong change, mistakes happen, but keeping that money is nothing less than STEALING. The waitress/server had to pay that back from their own money. Keep in mind all the security cameras. Do the right thing and return the money. Then if you return again you would be welcomed for doing the RIGHT THING.

Helium is Limited

Do you know that helium is an element? That means it cannot be manufactured. When the world's supply of helium is depleted, there is no replacement. Did you know MRI machines require helium? Despite this crucial medical need and other industrial needs, people persist in buying helium balloons, thereby promoting the waste of this element. Once introduced into the air, helium cannot be reclaimed. Recently, a local memorial event was publicized on TV news where people released hundreds of helium filled balloons. Not only is this a waste of helium, but the balloons eventually come down, causing litter and a danger to wildlife. There are dozens of respectful ways to honor a death that are not polluting and wasteful.

Avoiding Holiday Shopping Scams

It’s that time of year again when we do holiday shopping, much of it online. It’s also the time when more scammers come out.

And what is it scammers want most? ey want your personal information so they can turn it into cash and fraudulent purchases.

Here are a few ways to avoid getting scammed online this holiday season:

Beware sales emails that include links, even if the email is from a store you usually use. ieves are very good at making their scam pages look genuine. Instead of clicking a link, open a web browser and go directly to the website itself. Sometimes the email will request that you update your account information. Instead, call the store and ask if they’ve sent out that request.

Beware the tracking emails you get with updates about packages that you’re expecting. Remember that genuine FedEx and UPS emails won’t ask for any personal information from you. Don’t click links. Go directly to the website.

Be careful where you shop online. Check reviews to see what others have to say. Avoid those with few or low ratings.

Consider using Amazon for most of your online purchases and having a Prime membership. Amazon is good at protecting customers when it comes to you receiving damaged items or not receiving any items at all. A Prime membership now costs $139 a year, but it includes free shipping, free movies and videos, and more.

If you are scammed, report it. Call your bank and the police, and then notify the Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-372-8311.

A goal for 2023: Go inside your bank to do your transaction now and then. Yes, it’s easier to just use the drive-up window for deposits and cash withdrawals, but there is a lot to be said for letting them put a face to a name. Once they know you and your banking habits, they’re more able to quickly identify anything that might be wrong.

DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others,
day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes
to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display.

The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs.

Gutters and downspouts

designed

away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.

First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today.

It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* B.G. in Minnesota writes: “If you want to freshen up drawers with sheets, pillowcases or in your luggage, just place a dryer sheet inside. They really do leave a nice scent, and they are also great for dusting jobs!”

* To control the level of garlic in a recipe, add it at the beginning for a lighter taste and at the end for a stronger taste. To get garlic out of the clove quickly instead of tedious peeling, just smash it and squeeze it out.

* The best cure for a foggy windshield is a chalkboard eraser. You can purchase them at office supply stores. They can be stored easily in your glove box. No window cleaner required for a quick clear windshield, and you can see well after. A clean windshield is a safety issue! -- M.T. in South Carolina

* Fill measuring cups with hot water and empty quickly before measuring sticky substances like honey or peanut butter. It will slide out much easier.

* Banana trick: For faster ripening, leave bunches together and store in a bag. For slower ripening, separate the bananas. They will ripen faster if stored near apples or citrus fruit. Also, remember that just because the outside is getting brown spots, the inside isn’t necessarily going soft.

* Warm up refrigerated baked goods in the microwave, but add a mug of water. It will keep the moisture in the bread. If your bread loaf is going stale, wrap it in foil and pop it in the oven for about 10 minutes at 300 F. It will freshen the bread!

STORY TIME Originating as a father’s gift to his daughter, the idea came from gluing two skis together to make a wide enough seat for the girl to sit on as her father pulled the skis together to let his daughter surf on the snow. The toy became so popular among his daughter’s friends that demand for the same toy started coming in from people and the man had to license the concept to a manufacturer for mass production. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Follow-up Colonoscopy Necessary After Result of Eight Polyps

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 73-year-old male. This year, I had a colonoscopy. They found some small polyps and one larger polyp. All polyps tested negative for cancer. I have had two previous colonoscopies in the past 10 years. Polyps were found in each one. My gastroenterologist said I should have another colonoscopy in one year. There has been no colon cancer in my family. As you age, is it safe to continue with a colonoscopy? I don’t feel safe having one every year. At what age should seniors stop having a colonoscopy? My previous gastroenterologist told me to have one in five years. I do a stool test yearly, given by my primary doctor. -- F.Q.

ANSWER: I read your reports, which showed a total of nine polyps, all “sessile” (flat, which is higher risk for development into cancer than those with a stalk), the largest being 8 mm. The pathology report confirmed these as tubular adenomas, none of which had the worrisome finding of high-grade dysplasia.

The official guidelines of the American College of Gastroenterology recommend a follow-up colonoscopy in three years. I definitely agree with that in people who are otherwise healthy. Colon cancer does definitely run in families, but at least 80% of colon cancer occurs in people with no known family history, meaning you can’t be complacent even if there isn’t any history in your family.

There is no absolute age cut-off for screening colonoscopies: Age 75 might be reasonable in someone who really doesn’t want to have another and whose previous results have all been normal, but I would be unlikely to recommend a screening exam in a person older than 85. People who have serious medical conditions outside the intestinal tract get less benefit from screening.

Age 73 is not so old that I would recommend against screening in otherwise healthy people, and given that you have had eight polyps, I definitely recommend a three-year follow-up. I don’t know why the gastroenterologist said one year, based on the reports you sent me.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND OTHERS HEALTHY

Sniffles, sore throat, fever, and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza.

Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu.

Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with.

Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people.

Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill.

Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

INFLAMMATION

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms.

While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimesaninflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering.

While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

Advice

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I believe strongly in natural cures and treatments for people and pets. Recently, my tomcat, Jessup, went to the vet to get xed, to stop my neighbors from complaining about his aggressiveness. I used herbal tinctures and supplements to prevent infection and reduce Jessup’s pain so that he wouldn’t have to take antibiotics and other medications that might harm his health long-term. When I told this to the vet at Jessup’s follow-up, she got really upset and said that if I did that again, she would no longer accept Jessup for treatment. I don’t understand why. Who’s in the right here? -- Sherry L., Los Angeles

DEAR SHERRY: While herbal supplements can be helpful for pets, it’s very important that you share with the veterinarian any current or intended use of these supplements.

For example, some prescribed drugs can interact with supplements and prevent a pet’s liver from properly metabolizing those supplements, causing a dangerous buildup of toxicity.

Vets today will work with pet owners to make sure that prescribed medications don’t interfere with, or interact with, herbal or vitamin supplements. But you have to be upfront and list any and all remedies that you’re giving to your pet. is is especially important with higher-risk procedures and surgeries of any kind, including neutering and spaying. A small pet’s body is especially reactive to pain and infection, and it’s important to keep them comfortable and avoid hampering their body’s ability to heal.

Work with the vet. Follow their advice. Ask questions before a procedure and disclose the supplemental treatment that you’d like to give your pet. Veterinarians will work with you on an e ective treatment plan because, just like you, they want your cat to be healthy and happy.

Readers, how well do you get along with your pet’s veterinarian? Let us know at ask@pawscorner.com.

James Joel McNeil December 5, 2022

James Joel McNeil died on December 5, 2022 at Legacy Village in Victo, New York, age 67.

He was born in Rochester, New York on April 6, 1955 to Ruth E and G. John McNeil, who preceded him in death. One of four brothers, he was raised on a farm in Mendon, New York and graduated from Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. He was an alumnus of Alfred University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He worked in his father’s hay and grain business and later for U-Haul of Rochester, at one point rising to manager of the Henrietta store. Illness retired him in 2018.

Jim had many interests including motorcycles, cars, white water rafting, camping, photography, and astronomy. He obtained a private pilot’s license and would take his brother Peter and nephew John ying over the Bristol Valley. He had an extensive collection of aviation prints, as well as an extensive library of military history of the 20th Century.

Jim’s happiest time was as a college student doing an astronomy inter-term on the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas in 1976. He learned to sail and harbored dreams of captaining his own boat in the Caribbean but circumstances dictated otherwise. He later wrote that it was there that he really felt a sense of easiness and serenity, wishing others the opportunity to go sailing and listen to the sound of the wind and the waves undisturbed.

Jim’s only regret was his failure to leave a more living legacy, such as an o spring and a legacy as a loving relative, husband, and brother. He never married and had no children, but always took an interest in his nieces and nephews even if from afar and sent holiday and birthday greetings regularly to his brothers.

He is survived by brother, David McNeil and wife, Carol; Michael McNeil and wife, Christine; and Peter McNeil and wife, Ginny, Along with nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Adam, John, Casey, and Collin. He is also survived by grandnieces and nephews, Tommy, Jane, Ruth, Parker, Evie, Elona, Liam, Finn, and Reid.

e fuller fruits of life were denied him because of illness. We cannot all become the men we want to be, but we are all God’s children.

He wished to be cremated, and his ashes scattered o the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas, o Sandy Point.

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is bothaprofessionalandpersonalasset.Butincertainways, therelianceon technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement.

Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible.

Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career.

The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.
