Cold w eather can cause starting problem s in diesel vehicles because the fuel tends to gel. One w ay to com bat gelling is to use an anti-gelling additive. Using an additive can im prove engine start up in cold w eather, im prove cold flow by preventing gelling and w ill clean deposits from fuel injectors, com bustion cham bers, intake valves and piston crow ns. It’s easy to forget that basic m aintenance can prevent expensive repairs. Change your fuel filter. Using a dirty fuel filter can cause w ax crystals to collect, cutting off the fuel. Change your m otor oil and your oil filter. Depending on the clim ate w here you live, consider changing the viscosity of your oil to help flow during the cold w inter m onths. Engine dam age can occur if the m otor oil is too thick due to the cold and the flow is restricted to the engine. You should check your ow ner’s m anual for the recom m ended viscosity for w inter tem peratures.

DID YOU KNOW? Though more buyers may prefer to lease new vehicles over preowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preowned automobiles. According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costs are less for various reasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leased brand new.

Big thank you Thank you to the people who bought my dinner last Saturday night at a local restaurant. It’s a hard season for me since my husband and I were married Christmas Day. He passed from Agent Orange in 2011. It was so nice of them to treat me to dinner. I hope they have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous to someone they didn’t know.

Courteous Drivers I’d like to give a shout out to the Henrietta drivers who show such courtesy and caution when cyclists are going through intersections or crossing the crosswalks. They wait until the cyclist is completely through the intersection or over the crosswalk before making their turns. Thank you for truly sharing the road.

Not Playgrounds Please let us remind you that senior apartment buildings are not playgrounds. You need to be more respectful of the elderly that live there. Take the children outside to play or to a playground where it's more suitable and safe for the tenants. Appointments I’m furious about, mostly medical offices, when they call to reschedule an appointment that you’ve been waiting months for. They want to reschedule for sometimes 2 to 3 months, if not more, out further. How about “bumping” others that haven’t been waiting so long. If it’s not your fault that the appointment is cancelled but it seems you’re the one that inconvenienced. You have no heart To all the people that dump their animals, you are the lowest. Do you even care that as you drive away, they are thinking what they did wrong? Take them to a shelter so they are warm and fed. How can you even sleep at night.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

The Power of Shopping Local: Building Stronger Communities BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n a world dominated by big-box retailers and online shopping giants, it’s easy to overlook the importance and impact of supporting local businesses. However, the benefits of shopping locally extend far beyond individual purchases, reaching into the very heart of our communities. There are so many reasons to choose local businesses to help build stronger, more resilient communities. Local businesses are the backbone of a community’s economy. When you shop locally, a more significant percentage of your money stays within the community, circulating through various local businesses and contributing to the area’s overall economic growth. Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and fosters entrepreneurship, as it provides opportunities for individuals to start and sustain their ventures.

Community Involvement Local business owners are more likely to be actively involved in community initiatives and events. They sponsor local sports teams, participate in fundraisers, and contribute to the community’s overall well-being. Resilience in Economic Downturns Communities with a strong base of local businesses tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. The interdependence of local businesses fosters a supportive network that can weather economic challenges more effectively than areas overly reliant on external corporations.

Shopping locally gives the gift that keeps giving, with: Personalized Service One of the standout features of local businesses is the personalized and attentive service they provide. Local shop owners often have a deep knowledge of their products and customers, allowing them to offer tailored recommendations and a more personalized shopping experience. Deb Paul says, “By spending your money locally, you may find yourself in a heartfelt conversation about your holiday plans and favorite seasonal recipes, as opposed to the more commercialized alternative... with incessant sales pitches and half-hearted, corporate-mandated greetings.” Fostering Social Connections

Unique and Handcrafted Products Local businesses frequently offer unique and handcrafted products not found in mainstream stores. Whether it’s handmade crafts, artisanal foods, or locally-designed clothing, these items add character and diversity to the community. Environmental Benefits Shopping locally often involves shorter transportation distances for goods, reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of consuming goods.

Local businesses often serve as gathering spots where people meet, connect, and build a sense of community. Coffee shops, bookstores, and local markets become hubs for social interactions, contributing to a more connected and vibrant community. In a globalized world, the choices we make as consumers have far-reaching consequences. By choosing to shop locally, we not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the unique fabric of our communities. The power to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods lies in our hands every time we make a purchase. Let’s embrace the vitality of local businesses and nurture the communities we call home.

Community Character Local businesses contribute to a community’s distinct character and charm. They often reflect the local culture and values, adding to the neighborhood’s overall identity. A thriving local business scene can attract visitors and enhance residents’ quality of life.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

(585) 225-7663 ROCROOFANDCHIMNEY.COM ICE DAM S PUT HOM ES AT RISK FOR TERM ITES I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a Tip * Before you use your grater to grate cheese, give it a quick shot of nonstick spray. It will keep the cheese from gunking up in the grate. If you need softened butter for a recipe, you can grate it from frozen and it will soften up very quickly, but not melt like in a microwave. * Clean your cellphone screen often. This is especially important if you have a smartphone. We use our fingers nonstop to touch the phone, then put it directly up to our face. It’s a germ’s paradise. Just remember: A quick swipe with an alcohol cloth might save you from getting the flu this season. Stay healthy! * When heater season is in full effect -- like now -- I keep a spray bottle of water to which I add two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener. I spritz the house from time to time, and it will add humidity as well as a pleasant scent, but it also keeps my carpets from making my kids little zappers (from static buildup when dragging their feet!). -- M.A. in Ohio (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full pric e is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on w hich time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buy certain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purc hase c ertain items. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Prepare Your Home for a New Puppy

Sterling is a 1 year old Shih Tzu and the cutest RIT Tiger. He has two “girlfriends” and loves his walks and playing with his favorite toy, Monkey.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This Christmas, we planned to get a puppy, but it is too young to leave its mother yet. Instead of revealing the puppy on Christmas Day, we wrapped a big box that had a little note in it from Santa saying that a new puppy will arrive soon, and to write down their ideas for a name on the back of the card. Do you have any tips on how we can prepare the house for the puppy's arrival in a few weeks? -- Chet in Boise, Idaho DEAR CHET: First, kudos to you for handling the Christmas announcement so well! That's a great way to surprise the kids during the gift-opening while not having to supervise a puppy who has no idea what is going on. And keeping the puppy with its mother until it's at least 8 to 12 weeks old is so important. Involving the kids in preparation for the puppy's arrival is important. Explain to them that puppies like to explore -- often with their teeth. So they need to put away their toys, clothing and anything that they don't want to get chewed up. Puppies can also get into foods and cleaning items that can be dangerous or deadly for them, so those items need to be lifted off the floor or removed from the house's common areas entirely. Talk to them about how they can help train the new puppy. This will prepare them for how to handle, talk to and correct the puppy from the first day of its arrival. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Estrace Cream Is Safe to Use in Woman Who Had Melanoma ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman who has been using Estrace vaginal cream weekly for several years. I am in excellent health, work out daily, run half-marathons and have my own business. I take 10 mg of atorvastatin daily. Ten years ago, I had melanoma removed from my arm. My concern is the use of Estrace. My gynecologist recommended that I use it after a Pap smear, but my primary care physician is not of the same mind. I would appreciate your opinion on this. My mother had breast cancer in her 80s, my sister had uterine cancer, and my brother passed away from bladder cancer. -- C.S. ANSWER: As far as the safety of using estradiol (Estrace), the bioidentical hormone to major natural estrogen, I am definitely of the same opinion as your gynecologist. When used topically, it works on the vulva and the lining of the vagina, keeping the tissue healthy. Without estrogen, the tissues that line the female perineum can become atrophic (thinned), predisposing a woman to discomfort, infections and incontinence. The Pap smear may have resulted in a finding that was suggestive of vaginal atrophy (increased neutrophils). Without treatment, the labia can even fuse together. With long-term use, the estrogen levels in the body are only slightly higher in women who use topical estrogen compared to those who do not, so the absorption into the body is minimal. The only case where I get concerned is with someone who has a personal history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor, such as endometrial cancer and some breast cancers. In those cases, I discuss options with both the patient and their oncologist.

BOWL GAMES AND NEW YEAR’S DAY

ENDING IN “AGE”

New Year’s Day is rife with tradition. Perhaps no such tradition is more exciting for fans of college football than the handful of New Year’s Day bowl games featuring some of the sport’s best teams. New Year’s Day bowl games can trace their origins back to the 19th century. According to History.com, on January 1, 1890, members of the Valley Hunt Club in Southern California paraded through the streets of Pasadena, California, engaging in various contests, including tug-of-war. While no collegians competed on the gridiron that day, the parade served as a precursor to the Tournament of Roses Parade, which immediately proceeded athletic contests that included polo matches and greasedpig catching. In 1901, the president of the parade, seeking to gain publicity for the town of Pasadena and its floral festival, sought to stage a sporting event that might attract more interest than pig-catching and polo. Festival organizers ultimately chose college football, deciding to initiate a matchup between a team representing the western United States and the eastern United States. On January 1, 1902, the football teams from the University of Michigan and Stanford University battled in the inaugural East-West football game. Michigan, which had not allowed a point all season long, steamrolled its way to a 49-0 victory. In fact, the game’s lack of competitiveness temporarily nixed plans for an annual New Year’s Day game, which was not played again until 1916, when Washington State University defeated Brown University 140. Interest in the game continued to grow from there on out, and in 1923, the game was moved to a large stadium known as the Rose Bowl. The game itself soon adopted the name of that stadium, and it retains that name today. Thanks to fan interest in the New Year’s Day game, other New Year’s bowl games soon followed, and continue to entertain college football fans every January 1. HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.

WHY SHOP SMALL & LOCAL?

• Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

The money you spend has a greater impact on your community, and ultimately you, when you spend it locally. For every $100 you spend, $68 recirculates and remains local, versus $43 when you spend online or at a national chain.*

• If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry.

A local business is able to provide a product or service that is backed by care, concern, hard work and dedication that you just can’t always get from a corporation. Where we spend our time and money is where we can make a difference to our communities. *LivingstonCounty.us-Civic Alerts-Shop Smart, Shop Local: LivCo Loot Promotes Neighborhood Small Businesses

Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce. Page 29

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Set a reasonable time frame. Be realistic when determining how long it will take to achieve your goal. Achieving a difficult goal can take time, so don’t expect overnight success.

Resolve to be a better parent Parenting is a challenging, yet rewarding role that many adults take on lovingly. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that there were 73.7 million children under age 18 living in families in 2016. Canadian Census results found roughly 5.8 million children living in private households with parents in 2016, the most recent year for data. Parenting is a hard job that evolves as children age, and moms and dads may wonder if there is anything they can do to be better parents. Raising successful, happy and well-rounded children takes effort, and the following tips may help parents along the way.

Take care of yourself It’s hard for parents to serve as good role models for their children if they aren’t taking care of themselves. A little self-reflection and some positive changes can help parents set strong examples for their youngsters.

Beware of comparisons

Parents often wonder what they may be doing wrong, especially when they see other children meeting milestones that their children may not be achieving. According to Harvey Karp, MD, author of “The Happiest Toddler,” babies develop rapidly and each child is unique. One set of abilities is bound to develop faster than another, Karp says. Making comparisons between children, whether it’s with youngsters’ siblings or friends, can be a recipe for conflict and self-doubt. Speak with a pediatrician if you have concerns about development. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Be an active listener Being an attentive parent includes listening to youngsters. Encourage kids to share their points of view on activities or topics they feel are important. That can reassure children they know they can come to you without fear of reprisal, even when they may have been out of line. This strengthens the bond between parents and their children.

Explain you are human, too Sometimes children need to see that their parents are not perfect to realize they needn’t be perfect either. The website Aha Parenting! recommends parents apologize when they are wrong and use such instances to teach kids that adults are human, too. These are just a few of the many steps parents can take to form strong bonds with their children and be the best parents possible.
