106 COBBLESTONE CT. MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Sudden car trouble is something no driver w ants to experience, but many a driver has been driving dow n the highw ay only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it c ould be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. W hen car trouble strikes w hile a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is c ertainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But w hen a car’s tank is full and it is still show ing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protec t themselves, their passengers and their vehicles.

But w hat homeow ner relishes the thought of climbing a ladder to check the health of his roof -- as key to a home’s energy efficiency as that roof might be -w hen the w eather is turning sharply colder outside? Well, as it turns out, w hile even a quic k, eyeball roof-c hec k is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option. You could just check your attic instead. “ Roofs ac tually c reate an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advanc ement of Roofing Excellence. “ That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage w ithout w orrying about falling.”

DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

5 Important Medicare Changes Coming For 2020 (NAPS)—If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, or are considering one, you will have more plan choices with a wider range of benefits to help you better manage your day-to-day health needs during this year’s open enrollment period. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, gives Medicare enrollees a chance to revisit their Medicare insurance coverage, make sure it still fits their needs and make changes for the coming year. Online health insurance broker eHealth outlines five of the most important Medicare changes to be aware of this year: 1. New benefits to help those with chronic illness. Starting in January, 2020, some Medicare Advantage Plans will include benefits for people with chronic illness that will help to support their care. A few examples include nutrition services, transportation to doctor’s appointments and home improvements like shower grips and wheelchair access. More traditional services like dental care, vision care and hearing aids also have been expanded.

* On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. * On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. * On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs.

2. Medicare Advantage premiums will be lower next year. The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans is expected to be $23 in 2020, a decrease of 14% from an average of $26.87 in 2019, and down 28 percent since 2017. The average Medicare Advantage premium this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007. 3. Part D drug plan premiums will be lower, too. The average Medicare prescription drug plan premium for 2020 is $30, a decline of 13.5% as compared with 2019 costs. Savings on out-of-pocket costs may be available as well. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 4. Seeing a doctor without leaving home will get easier. Many seniors will have access to Medicare Advantage telehealth benefits to connect with health care providers online or by phone. For 2020, more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans will offer added telehealth benefits, reaching up to about 1.7 million enrollees. 5. Medigap plan options are changing. Two of the most popular supplemental plans (so-called Medigap plans) used by those enrolled in original Medicare—Plan F and Plan C—will no longer be available to new Medicare members or those born after January 1, 1955. Fortunately, Plan G, another Medigap policy, offers the same level of coverage provided by Plan F—minus the Part B deductible—and will continue to be available after January 2020. The Part B deductible was $185 in 2019. Even if you’re happy with your Medicare coverage, eHealth recommends that you review your current coverage during open enrollment because each year plans can and do make changes in costs, physician networks or drug benefits. Now’s the time to decide which Medicare Advantage plan is best for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Start early. If the big party is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so come the big day all they need to do is turn on the oven and let meals cook while the family spends time together.

Thankful for all Caregivers. Being a Caregiver is a very hard, stressful, demanding job whether it be for a family member or in a professional capacity. The physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be very overwhelming. If you know someone who is a Caregiver, consider offering This is directed to the one who ranted about others handling someone’s wheelchair without permission. You said that doing so is considered assault. Does this include someone touching my hearing aids? I have had someone reach out to touch them for one reason or another. Would I be right in calling the police next time someone did this? As I was pulling into a parking space at [local store] in [local town], I saw a dog in a vehicle that clearly was in distress. I sat there for approximately 5 minutes and decided to call 911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to sit with their loved one so they can have a couple hours to themselves. Give them the opportunity to go out to lunch or have coffee with a friend, do some unhurried shopping, pamper themselves at the hairdresser or barbershop or take a relaxing bath. Just let them get away and take some time for themselves. If this is not possible, offer to do the grocery shopping, take items to the dry cleaners, help with the house cleaning, shovel the driveway or whatever would be helpful. Caregivers often feel isolated and lonely. Just being there for the caregiver, who is giving all of themselves to the one they are caring for, is so important.

I was having a bad day and went into the Mexican restaurant, Rancho Viejo on Ellicott St. in Batavia, and a young male waiter spontaneously paid for my meal. As I left the restaurant, we hugged.

Thank you to all the cheerful employees doing any kind of customer service during the holidays. I know from firsthand experience how difficult it can be to stay positive throughout this stressful retail season and service season. Thank you for making everyone’s day a little more jolly!

I would like to thank the Christmas Angel who paid the remaining balance of my layaway at Walmart. It is very much appreciated! Thank you so much for giving my family and myself an amazing Christmas. Bless you and your family this holiday season. I will be paying it forward in the future. Thank you!

Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos!

I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

people genuinely trying to be kind to you. I also have offered assistance to people in wheelchairs and not because, as you put it, I “feel sorry” for them. I try to help anyone who may need assistance. I have offered elderly persons help finding their car in a parking lot, assisted a person shorter than I in reaching a high shelf in a grocery store or even a child struggling to open a door. You see, there are people in this world who just want to be kind. Please don’t assume that, as you put it, you are “an object for pity” or that they are dwelling on the fact you are in a wheelchair. Next time, please just say, “No thank you,” and be grateful that there are still kind people in this world.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm insurance coverage. All drivers need to be insured in case of an accident. Passengers are well within their rights to request proof of current insurance before agreeing to carpool.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

COOKING FOR A HOLIDAY CROWD Average portion sizes for each guest include: 3 ounces of dips; 3 ounces of salad; 6 ounces of meat or main entrée; 5 ounces of starch; and 11/2 pieces of dessert. These estimates can be used to calculate how much food will be needed.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES

I can smell autumn dancing in the breeze.

Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

The sweet chill of pumpkin and crisp sunburnt leaves. ~Ann Drake, 2013

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your preholiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

2019 Grammy Award Nominee, Victor Wainwright, Rocks Geneseo By Amanda Dudek

O

n the evening of Saturday, November 16th, Victor Wainwright and the Train, a 2019 Grammy nominee, thundered into Geneseo’s Riviera Theater, courtesy of Fanatics Pub/Jim Shelly Promotions. Seats were sold out with standing room only in the beautifully restored theater venue. Opening artist, Owen Eichensehr, with his upbeat, eclectic blend of blues, folk, funk, jam, jazz and rock, was very well received. Next, the Train took the stage, featuring Billy Dean on drums, percussion and vocals, Terrence Grayson on bass and vocals, Pat Harrington on guitar and vocals as well as special guests Mark Earley on the sax and Doug Woolverton on the trumpet. Guests grooved to their scintillating sound as the flowing rhythm of the Train showcased the musicians in turn, each outstanding in his own right. Hailing from Florida, Billy Dean expertly emcees the crowd while driving the band forward in seemingly effortless rhythm. The nine-year Victor Wainwright and the Train veteran, Dean’s dynamic drumming style has topped Billboards and lit up stages across the United States and beyond. Terrence Grayson of Jackson, Mississippi, cut his musical teeth playing songs in church before falling in love with the full, powerful sounds of the bass. Early in his musical career, Grayson fell sway to the groovy, intoxicating blues, eventually incorporating elements of soul, R&B, rock & roll, funk and roots music into his vibe. Guitarist Pat Harrington from our nearby Gasport, New York, is perhaps the newest member of the Train, joining the group in 2016. His exciting guitar leads and improvised riffs promise to add fuel to the Train’s fire as it charges ahead, onward and upward.

Mark Earley on the sax and Doug Woolvertoon on the trumpet thrill the crowd! Courtesy of Matt Zahn Photography.

That evening, the Train continued to play, preparing the crowd for none other than Victor Wainwright, talented and surprisingly youthful composer, producer, songwriter, vocalist, and awardwinning entertainer and piano player. He has won as slew of prestigious awards, including six Blues Music Awards, such as multiple BMA Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year awards, a BMA Entertainer of the Year Award and a BMA Band of the Year Award. He soared to the Top 10 in the US Billboard Top Blues Album chart in 2013 and in 2016, won the B. B. King Entertainer of the Year Award. This year, Victor Wainwright and the Train became a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Upon his introduction, Victor Wainwright paused at the front of the theater to fist-bump a young audience member before jauntily heading down an aisle to sit at his electric piano under the cool blue lights of the stage. Immediately, his fingers began finding melodies as he welcomed the enthusiastic crowd. He praised the

Train, noting how good they sounded and joking that he “hoped they would let [him] sit in!” Wainwright and the crowd vibed and joked like old friends in what he referred to as, “a new location with a familiar crowd,” before launching into “I’ll Start Tomorrow,” an uproarious, boogie-woogie infused hit from his 2018 album, “Victor Wainwright and the Train.” Wainwright’s hands flew up and down the keyboard, skillfully driving the melody as the likewise talented vocalist sang the song’s story with hilarious facial expression and inflection. He riffed and improvised, never missing a beat or a key, even when he tipped his keyboard sideways to play alongside guitarist Harrington. The song concluded to thunderous applause as did each song throughout the night. Wainwright transitioned effortlessly from upbeat, honky-tonk jams to the rhythmic rolls of brooding blues, slow and glorious, and back again. His hands were lightening, striking, rolling and sliding so quickly yet correctly, one is left wondering how so much talent can exist in one person. Wainwright himself is ever humble, offering as one of his original songs a tribute to B. B. King for whom he once opened at the Peabody Theater. Yet, he seems destined to leave his own mark on the blues music scene as he continues to reinvent and redefine its meaning and its possibilities. week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue. The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and ended 18 hours after that. I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented. 1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot? The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both. 2. Are both injections identical? 3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid. Related? 4. If I get shingles, do I have a higher risk for a severe case? -- J.G. ANSWER: Compared with the previous one-time vaccine Zostavax, the new two-dose Shingrix vaccine is much more effective. However, it does have a higher risk of side effects. You have had the most common side effect, though only 10% of people will have symptoms as bad as yours. These symptoms are caused by your body mounting an inflammatory response to the glycoprotein in the vaccine (the new vaccine does not contain a live virus). You clearly have a robust system to fight off infection. To answer your questions in order: You are at higher risk for a similar reaction for the second shot. I would plan your day accordingly, and premedicate with Tylenol (even though it may make the vaccine slightly less effective). The second vaccine is identical to the first. I have read reports that there have been shortages of the vaccine. Chickenpox and shingles can affect you both by the virus attacking you and by an exuberant inflammatory and immune reaction. I would guess that you are at lower risk for viral complications (such as infection of the eye, brain or lungs) but at higher risk for symptoms due to your own system, such as high fever. In many cases, the body’s response to infection can be as damaging as the infection itself. ***

prescribed allopurinol (100 mg) once a day. Approximately five to six months after I started taking it, I became lethargic and was not feeling myself (I am a very young 77 years old) and suddenly lost my sense of taste. I was taken off the medicine and still have little taste sensation other than citrus fruits, apples and spices. I was told that this could last for months, years or forever. Do you have any suggestions for me? I am eating as before, hoping that I will recover my taste. -- N.K. ANSWER: I certainly found that allopurinol can cause loss of taste sensation, but the Food and Drug Administration case reports don’t say how long it can last. Unfortunately, I can’t find any reliable way (or even plausible way) to increase the likelihood of getting your taste sensation back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
