HOW TO FIND A CAR THAT FITS YOUR BUDGET
Seek out no-markup dealerships - It may take some investigation, but there are certain dealerships that are not adding astronomical markups, also called “market adjustments,” to the costs of their vehicles. These dealers may advertise online, and car buyers can always call ahead to ask about markups.
Extend the life of your vehicle:
Scale back on short trips.
The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle.Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle andimproveyourfuelefficiency aswell.

DID YOU KNOW?
Valentine’s Day symbols like heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, Cupid shooting his arrow and bouquets of roses are ubiquitous come February. Each of those symbolizes is meant to signify the love individuals have for their significant others, but perhaps no Valentine’s Day image is more symbolic of love than doves. According to LiveScience.com, doves have been a symbol of love since the Middle Ages, when many people believed birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. But the history of doves and their affiliation with love dates back even further and can be traced to the days of Greek mythology. Aphrodite is the goddess of love in Greek mythology, and she is often depicted as being surrounded by doves. Doves’ own traits also have helped them become symbols of love, as LiveScience.com notes that male doves help their female partners incubate and tend to their young, bolstering their image as caring, loving birds.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE
(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.
Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far.
When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.
HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.
One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

WAYS TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG
As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.
In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may
their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose. FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY
February’s birthstone is the amethyst, which symbolizes piety, sincerity and spiritual wisdom.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Save smaller bits of leftover veggies in a large freezer-safe container or bag, in the freezer. When it’s full, make vegetable soup.
* “Be sure you use bathroom fans correctly, turning on to remove steam, but turning off to keep from pumping out heat. This is equally important in the summer, when you pump out valuable cooled air. Many people don’t think of fans this way, and they end up running for hours.”
-- R.D. in Mississippi
* Keep salt or baking soda by the stove for small quick cleanups. A good dose of salt will stop an egg from running all over the place. Dip a damp cloth in baking soda for a handy scrub. Although a handful of either might work in a pinch on a small flare-up on the stove, you should have a fire extinguisher close by for fires.
* “I used to comb through my last year’s calendar for important yearly dates when transferring them to the new year’s calendar. This year I have gotten smart. At the end of the month, before turning the page, I have highlighted the items I would want to put in next year’s calendar. When I look back, I will not have to search through all the entries for the good stuff.” -- U.L. in Ohio
* “I just spent a lot of time cleaning my mother’s bathtub in a longneglected bathroom. To keep it from mildewing, I used paste wax to protect the walls. You can use car wax for the same purpose, and many people know about this helpful tip. But I wanted to add a caution: walls only. Especially if you have an elderly resident (or a child), do not wax the inside of the tub, and make sure to have a nonslip mat in the tub at all times.” -- A daughter in Oregon
Cats and Colds
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: is winter, a lot of my family has had colds and u. Can my cat catch a cold from us? -- Darlene, via email
DEAR DARLENE: Cats don’t catch colds directly from humans, but they can su er from upper respiratory infections that are just as uncomfortable.
A number of viral and bacterial infections can make your cat sick. Some of these, such as FVR (feline rhinotracheitis) and FVC (feline calicivirus) can be prevented by making sure your cat gets an annual checkup and vaccinations. An underlying health condition also can make your cat more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Again, regular checkups and shots can keep it healthy.
What symptoms does a cat with a URI have? It may be sni ing and sneezing, along with a clear or cloudy discharge from the eyes or nose. Your cat also may have little to no appetite and might be lethargic.
Contact the veterinarian right away if your cat has any of these symptoms. e vet will want to examine your cat to con rm what kind of URI it has. Use a cat carrier so other cats in the waiting room won’t be exposed, and to keep your cat safe.
Follow the vet’s instructions on caring for your sick cat. You may be given a prescription, and you will be asked to keep the cat comfortable and warm, and to try to get it to drink water and eat some food. Dry food may be a turno , but it may eat a little wet food. If your cat won’t eat or drink, contact the vet again -- an IV may be needed to keep it hydrated.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

Wonderful Wife
Thank you to my wonderful wife for the sacrifices you have made to take care of our two children. You have paused your career as a standout teacher – twice – to focus on raising them, currently our little girl in her first year of life. You are an outstanding mother, wife, and friend. Everyone whose life you have touched is fortunate, especially me. Life is undoubtedly hard right now with two young ones, but the messes, poor sleep, and frustrations are worth it. The days are long but the years are short. We are blessed with two healthy happy children, a roof over our heads, and stability. Through all the challenges I look forward to moments big and small: cooking, Adirondack vacations, playing outside with the kids, family hikes, silly time, and couch time (plus Trivia and Even Exchange in the Penny Saver). I love you and keep your head up. I’m glad I started a conversation with you – the tall, beautiful brunette from the environmental club – at that party back in college 16 years ago.
Avon Inn Angel!
On January 12, 2023 our ladies golf league gathered for an "after-the holiday" get together at the Avon Inn. One of our golfers fell into medical distress and we would all like to thank Angel, our bartender/server for her quick actions to get our friend comfortable, cooled down and cleared the way for the emergency workers. Your assistance and calmness were much appreciated.
Disappointed and Sad
I am disappointed in some people. It is sad. I was at [Business Name] and got a cart that a good Samaritan left so I in return left it unhooked for someone else. At that time a lady came out and I watched her while I was putting my bag in the car. She took her cart AND the one I left, hooked them, and in turn got the quarters. I always leave my cart if I get one or return a cart if it was left and I used it. I try to do something nice and someone has the nerve to do that. It's not right. Makes me disappointed and sad that someone would do this.

Teddy bears got their name in 1902 after President Theodore Roosevelt in a series of events that happened when he went on a hunting trip. While hunting, they happened upon a bear, and President Roosevelt refused to shoot it. The story soon spread all over, and the first stu ed bears were developed by toymakers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Stei in Germany and they were named ‘Teddy Bears’ after President Roosevelt’s pet name.

The first teddy bear to journey into space is named Magellan T. Bear, which joined the NASA shuttle mission in 1995.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY
Traditionally, men have gifted women with boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. However, that role is reversed in other areas of the world. For example, in Japan, women give gifts - namely chocolates - to the men in their lives to express love, courtesy or social obligation. This tradition first began in 1936 when confectioner Morozoff Ltd. ran the first ever Valentine’s Day ad in Japan through a local English newspaper. By the 1950s, other Japanese confectioners were following suit.

SENIOR NEWS By
Matilda Charles
Lowering Our Drug Costs
I got a shock the other day when I went to the pharmacy to pick up the latest re ll of my three drugs and realized that the pharmacy assistant had neglected to run it through GoodRx, the program that helps reduce the price of our drugs. Once he did that, the cost dropped signi cantly.
It made me realize just how much other seniors are paying for the drugs we need to stay healthy. ere are ways to cut those costs. It just takes a little work and a lot of monitoring on our part to make sure it happens.
As mentioned, there’s GoodRx (www.goodrx.com), which I’ve used for several years. eir website isn’t the easiest to use, but a er you try it once, you’ll appreciate being able to cut the costs of your drugs every time you need a re ll.
ere are other ways as well:
RxAssist (www.rxassist.org) has programs that are run by the pharmaceutical companies to help those who can’t a ord their prescriptions. If your drugs cost more than $10, present your RxAssist card to get the lowest price. Check the website for a long directory of patient assistance programs. Beware that some programs involve a small fee to be a member and many have eligibility requirements.
Consider Walmart pharmacies for their generic program. A 30-day prescription will cost $4 and only $10 for a 90-day prescription. Not all generic drugs will qualify for those prices, but it’s worth making a call to your local Walmart pharmacy to nd out if your drugs are on that list. NeedyMeds website (www.needymeds.org) was started by a physician in 1997 to help gather information about reduced drug and health care costs. e website says over $337 million has been saved so far.
And nally, check the prices at Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs (costplusdrugs.com). For some drugs, this one is the lowest of all.

* OMG, the popular acronym for “Oh my God,” was first used in writing in a letter to Winston Churchill in 1917, by John Arbuthnot Fisher, a retired Admiral of the British Navy, who said, “I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the tapis, O.M.G. (Oh! My God!).”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bariatric Surgery Can Be Considered to Keep Weight Off
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had a BMI over 40 for the last 20 years, and I have not been able to lose weight or keep the weight off. My doctor prescribed Ozempic, which is helping, but as soon as I stop, all the weight creeps back on in a few weeks. I was always wary of surgery for weight loss, but recent studies seem to indicate better long-term health outcomes. What are your thoughts? -- S.O.
ANSWER: Medical or surgical treatment for weight loss is not right for every person who is overweight. Many people take medications in the class called glucagonlike peptide-1 agonists, which includes semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda and Victoza) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). But these medicines have the potential for harm, and an individual’s risks, especially conditions that can be affected by being severely overweight or obese, need to be carefully considered. Surgery has far more risks than medication and requires the most careful consideration before receiving a recommendation of bariatric surgery, of which there are many types.
I am much more likely to refer a patient to one of my colleagues in bariatric surgery when a patient is very obese and when there are clear medical issues that I can expect to get better with surgery. These medical issues can include diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Most of the time, these conditions can be well-managed without bariatric surgery, but sometimes management is very difficult. In this case, consideration of bariatric surgery is worthwhile. Bariatric surgery is never the first choice in weight management. A comprehensive lifestyle intervention -- with an individualized diet (ideally recommended by an expert such as a registered dietician or nutritionist), moderate exercise (with a goal of 150 minutes per week minimum), and regular meetings to help keep a person on track -- is the right place to start. It is effective for many people if they maintain the behaviorial changes.
I have been prescribing some of my patients with the GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medications with good results, but as you mention, if you stop taking them, they stop working. Unless you make a dramatic change to your lifestyle that you can keep up, the weight will return.
Bariatric surgery does have very strong long-term weightloss data, as well as dramatic reductions in diabetes when used for the appropriate people.

WHAT’S YOUR HURRY?
In Joshua 4 we read of 4 Jewish Priests of God carrying the Ark of the Covenant (not Noah’s), walking toward the raging waters of Jordan at flood stage, then when their toes were dipped in the water, the waters heaped up and stopped flowing. They stood in the middle of the river till all the Israelites passed over. All were hurrying to get over before the miracle stopped. Some hurried because of fear, some for peer pressure of family or friends, etc. Why do you hurry through life? Have you let the world set the pace? Have you passed right on by God, His men and His church? Going 60 miles per hour and not knowing where you’re going when you die! THINK!

Over the past century, as the forests of the Bristol Hills regrew following the extensive land clearing and logging of the 1800s, some of the region’s more uncommon wildlife – bear, bobcat, and sher – have made a noticeable come back. ese and other changes in the populations of both wild game and their predators will be the subject of a free lecture at 11a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at United Church of Bristol.
e talk, sponsored by the Bristol Hills Historical Society, features Michael Palermo, a certi ed wildlife biologist with the Division of Fish and Wildlife at the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.
“Most of New York was forested 200 years ago and by the 1880s it dropped to just 25%. is dramatic change, combined with unregulated hunting and trapping, caused signi cant declines for several wildlife species,” Palermo said. “But today approximately 63% of New York is forested and game regulations have been enacted, leading to the rebound of many of these species.”
Palermo’s talk will trace the e ects in the Bristol Hills of changes in forest cover, hunting and the absenceorpresenceofpredatorslikewolves, cougars, and coyotes. He will also discuss threats to the future of Bristol Hills forests, such as the overpopulation of deer and invasive plants. “How humans have

Kimberly Ann Dougherty (Harrison)
February 1, 2023
Avon - February 1, 2023 at age 72. Kim is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Jerry Dougherty; daughters, Jennifer Dougherty (Tim Ferrara), Colleen (Bryan) Mann; son, John Dougherty (Mark Falls); brother, Steve (Kathy) Harrison and multiple nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws and cousins.
Kim was born on November 8, 1950, the daughter of Roger and Jane Harrison. She was a proud wife, mother, sister, businesswoman and most proudly, grandmother to Ruairi, Gideon and Killian Mann. Kim grew up as a faith- lled person, attending St. Agnes Catholic School in Avon before going on to St. Agnes High School in Rochester. She grew up under the business savvy and community-focused guidance of her mother, Jane, the founder of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Kim was dedicated to her family, her faith, her community and to being a steward and leader of her mother’s legacy, co-leading the Genesee Valley Penny Saver alongside her beloved brother, Steve. She was the true example of a servant leader, giving sel essly to the people and community she cared so much about. Mostly quiet and reserved, she was proud, never letting her own challenges, health or other, get in the way of doing what she could to take care of others. After all, “she didn’t have time for that.” Sometimes it was just a thoughtful card, but often it was something she baked in the kitchen, where she found her peace.
roughout her life she had a great love for horses that she joyfully passed on to both her daughter, Jennifer and granddaughter, Ruairi. Kim was the American “mom” to multiple foreign exchange students from around the world.
She was not a social butter y, unlike her husband, Jerry. at just wasn’t her thing. She found her joy in her family, her home and giving back to the community as an employer, donor and a dedicated, behind the scenes, Rotary wife. Kim served on the board of the St. Agnes School Education Foundation and for many years on the eresa House Board.
Family and friends may call February 10, 2023 from 2 - 6 PM at the Stephenson - Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee Street, Avon. Her Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11 AM at St. Agnes Church, 96 Prospect Street, Avon. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Avon. Donations in her honor may be made to Saint Agnes School Education Foundation, 60 Park Place, Avon, NY 14414 (https://www.stagnesavon.org/giving-opportunities) and the Sisters of Saint Joseph (https://www.ssjrochester.org/).

WARM UP WITH STEW ON COLD WINTER NIGHTS
Serves 6 generously
2 pounds beef shoulder, cut into 2-inch pieces (see note)
1 onion, cut into large dice
2 carrots, cut into large dice
2 stalks celery, cut into large dice
2 dried bay leaves
4 sprigs fresh thyme
7 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 bottle red wine
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon canola oil
1/4 pound slab bacon, cut into large dice
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons)
unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups beef stock
2 large Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice
1. Put the beef chunks in a large bowl and add the onion, carrots and celery. In a piece of cheesecloth, tie together a bouquet of garni of the bay leaves, thyme, parsley, and peppercorns and add to the bowl. Pour in the bottle of wine. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator overnight, stirring the mixture once or twice over the course of the evening.
2. The next day, remove the meat from the marinade and dry the pieces in a shallow pan lined with several layers of paper towels. Remove the vegetables and reserve them separately, along with the bouquet garni. Reserve the wine. Season the beef with salt and pepper.
3. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the canola oil. Add the bacon and cook until browned and the fat is rendered, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside. In single-layer batches, brown the beef chunks on all sides, then set aside. Brown the reserved onions, carrots and celery, about 10 minutes. Add additional canola oil to the pot if there is not enough bacon fat to brown all of the beef and vegetables.
4. Return the beef to the pot with the vegetables and add 3 tablespoons of the butter. Sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes. Add the reserved wine and deglaze the pot, scraping up all the browned bits from the bottom. Add the bacon and stock and bring to a boil. Skim off the scum that rises to the top; once the scum is removed, add the bouquet garni. Simmer, covered, over medium-low heat until the beef is very tender, about 11/2 hours. Remove the bouquet garni.
5. Toward the end of the beef’s cooking time, bring the potatoes to a boil in a separate saucepan covered generously with salted water. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes.
6. In a medium sauté pan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium-high heat. Add the pearl onions and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the onions and cook until both onions and mushrooms are golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
7. Serve the stew in bowls, garnished with the pearl onions, mushrooms and potatoes.
Note: When shopping for beef, you won’t find a cut labeled “beef shoulder” - what you want is either a chuck roast of some sort or, from a bit lower on the shoulder, a cut labeled either “arm roast” or “round bone roast.”
