I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles. It’s important to expect the unexpected when embarking on home renovations. Budgeting for hidden costs, expecting delays and coping with the upheaval to daily schedules are par for the remodeling course. However, the end result is often well worth the time and effort.

M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

A CLEAN CAR IS MONEY IN THE BANK (NAPSI)—Purchasing a new car is a major financial investment. Keeping it clean can be an easy and inexpensive way to protect its resale and trade-in value. “Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.” The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. • Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse. • Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both. • Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. • Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Free Guide: To order a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website, www.carcare.org. AUTOMOTIVE

M otorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehic le part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a c ar burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. W ithout the air filter, those c ontaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the c ombustion proc ess to take plac e. W ithout the proper c ombustion levels, vehic les c annot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get few er miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also c an rob an engine of pow er. Drivers may notic e sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil c hange servic e c all. M any technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. How ever, drivers w ho live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. M ec hanic s c an often detec t w hen an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) All that flattery and fawning shouldn’t affect any decision you have to make. Keep your focus on the facts and ignore all the hyperbole, especially if it gets uncomfortably personal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine instincts are on the mark about that “favor” you’re being asked to do. Agree to nothing unless you get a full explanation -- which you would check out first, of course. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A somewhat unsettled recent period should give way to a smoother time going through the week. Use this quieter time to catch up on matters you might have had to let slide. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling a little confused is understandable with all those mixed messages. Take time to list the questions you have. Then present them and insist on answers that make sense. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cupid can be very helpful for Lions seeking a love connection. The chubby cherub also brings warm and fuzzy feelings to paired Leos and Leonas who already share a special love line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Travel is favored this week, whether you’ll be globetrotting or taking a trip to a nearby getaway. You might be surprised (or maybe not) by who wants to be your traveling companion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting advice on your next business-related move is a good idea, but only if your advisers are trustworthy. Get references that you can check out before you make any decisions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Getting a boost in your self-esteem is one benefit that comes with a job well done. There are other plusses as well, including being noticed by all the right people. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make time to deal with family matters, especially where they concern your elderly kinfolk. Being there for them from the start can help resolve problems sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Getting a project started can often be difficult. But the good news is that you won’t want for lack of assistance from colleagues who would like to work with you. So, let them! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A lot of work-related issues might be raised this week, and you need to be prepared for whatever comes along. Things should be easier when it comes to matters in your private life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What might appear to be a much unwanted change in your life right now could turn out to be a very welcome event after all. Give yourself a chance to see where it might take you. BORN THIS WEEK: You exercise your strong leadership qualities well, which is why people believe in you and feel reassured by you. UNIQUE WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition. REAL ESTATE

Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungeejumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

CHOOSE WISELY IN SELECTING VALENTINE GIFTS Skip the gas station flowers, candy or last-minute gifts. Valentine’s Day is a time to show you care. If you’ve left gifting to the last minute, you may make the situation worse by giving something impersonal you picked up on an errand. If you forgot or ran out of time, simply admit you goofed or time got away from you. Then ask your sweetheart what he or she wants and go shopping together.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
"Let food be thy medicine"
is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer's disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives. LP203730 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Feb. 22, 1732, George Washington is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS (NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society.
Hi Everyone. I’m Smokin’ Joe. I’m a 20-yearold, 1500 lb. half Percheron/half Friesian draft horse. I live in my Mom’s back yard in a nice barn and paddock with my brother from another mother, Mr. G. I spend a lot of my time thinking about my next meal—sometimes while I’m eating the one that’s right in front of me! I also hang out with my bro, cavorting, daydreaming and taking the occasional standing power nap. Mr. G and I both think we have the good life because our Mom sometimes gives us treats for NO REASON! Ahhh!
Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Sponsored this week by:
DAYCARE & TRAINING
• Boarding • Training • Doggy Day Camp Give dogs what they need and love socialization, play, naps & exercise, along with our irresistible open play environment.
It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved. For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025. “Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Tinker Nature Park: Historian, Soldier, Spy By Marlene Caroselli
I
f the Tinker Nature Park were a person, it would have more characters than John LeCarre’s famous spy novel of a similar name. In addition to trails to be walked and Civil War history that was once re-enacted on part of its 300 acres, the Nature Park offers events and outings good for the body, the mind and the soul. Tinker - The Tinker Family arrived in this area in 1812 and settled on 40 acres in what was then the Town of Pittsford. Henrietta became its own town in 1818. James and Rebecca Tinker came from Connecticut and brought with them six children, eventually having two more. Following the opening of the Erie Canal, the farm eventually grew to over 300 acres, and the family prospered. In 1828, work was started on the Cobblestone house, which was finished in 1830. Six generations of the Tinker Family lived in the Cobblestone home until the donation of the park and the acquisition of the home by the Town of Henrietta. The Tinker Homestead opened as a historic house museum in 1994. The Hansen Nature Center, where classes are held, was made possible through a donation from local businessman and Henrietta resident Henry Hansen. It opened in 1995 and thanks to his generosity once again, expanded to open the exhibit area in 1998. Nearly five hundred years ago, Shakespeare acknowledged that “one touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” You’ll feel that inclusion, that kinship, as you view the seasonal nature exhibits at the Hansen Nature Center. Two of the most popular are the indoor honeybee hive and the rescued birds: Pudge, Lola and Felix. Open year-round, the Center’s classroom holds seasonal programming with topics that include gardening, beekeeping, yoga, local wildlife, and more.
species throughout the seasons based on sight, their calls, and other signs they leave behind. Community Enricher - Another persona residing at Tinker is the non-profit group The Friends of Tinker Nature Park. They co-sponsor community events with the Town of Henrietta. All events are free and open to the public. In addition, Tinker Nature Park hosts several special events including Wild Tinker, the Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration, the Honey Harvest Festival, and the very popular summer Art and Garden Party! Currently the event schedule stretches from February to December with breaks only in November and March, depending on Easter’s date.
Marlene Caroselli, whose 63rd book, Driving Mr. Albert: 365 Einstein - Inspired Brain Boosts, will be published this year.
Patron of the Arts - The Art & Garden Party, which will be held on June 27th of this year, will create an immersive art exposition using pieces from local artists. The artwork will be found by amateur spies among the existing displays of the house. The curator-character of yet another Tinker persona intermingles large and small pieces to show visitors the rooms of the house and to encourage them to search for the artwork. Pieces that had been in the house’s collection for years have been given new context, and many visitors are now aware of details in the hearths, desks, and small accessories that previously went unnoticed. Historian & Agricultural Archivist Another metaphoric personality residing at Tinker is the Farm Museum, which charts the growth of agriculture in Western New York from subsistence to commercial farming. Visitors step back into history and learn how the Erie Canal forever changed the face of farming in New York State. The museum has an extensive collection of farm implements that reflects the modernization of farming through the years.
Tinker Homestead, side view
Trailer - “Trailer” is sometimes used as a verb, meaning to transport something. You’ll likely find your soul transported by the 3/4 mile nature trail that the Tinker Nature Park offers visitors. The 1/2-mile perimeter trail includes fitness and exercise stations with instructional signage. After all, it’s been said that “to walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.” Soldier - For fifteen years, starting in 2003, Civil War reenactments were held at the Nature Center to bring more awareness to the house museum. The reenactments were replaced by the Wild Tinker Program. Wild Tinker provides live animal presentations throughout the day, including featured creatures from the Seneca Park Zoo, Wild Wings, and the Hawk Creek Bald Eagle program. Spy - Even an amateur sleuth will be able to spy any number of activities to enjoy. Guided tours will take you through the fields, marshes, forests, and across the pond to explore and learn. For those who believe, as Tinker-ites do, that “we are guests in plant and wildlife communities,” the Nature Center preserves those communities so this and future generations may enjoy them. You’ll learn about plants, animals, and other organisms of the habitats as well as identify different

Memory Keeper - Families interested in memorializing those who have passed can purchase memorial bricks on the Tinker property. This Tinker gesture places the bricks on the sidewalk leading to the labyrinth, which was built in memory of David Dimeo, a Boy Scout leader. Wow! Seems to me that you should look for another type of job! Seriously! I’m 66 years young, and at times, I do assist the cashier in loading my grocery bags into my cart. This is optional. I am a caring person who has worked in retail as a cashier, etc., but in no way is it something that should be demanded. Next, would you like for your customers to ring up their own orders (that’s what self-check outs are for) and bag their own groceries while on your line? After spending money for groceries, the least we, as customers, can expect is to have a cashier bag them and put them in our cart! You’re getting paid to do that; I’m not! I don’t want to go to your line, that’s for sure. Wish I knew where you worked! Get another job. I live in a small town, and GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On January 29th, an early morning jogger smelled natural gas on Wheatstone Circle in Fairport. Fortunately, he took the time from his run to report this to authorities. By 7:00 a.m., Rochester Gas and Electric responded and determined that there was, indeed, a leak in the gas line in my front yard. The RG&E team went to work immediately. They spent most of the nasty winter day locating the faulty gas line and replacing it. It unnerves me to think what might have happened. Instead, our neighborhood
was blessed.
close to me, there is a dog that is put out every day early in the mornings before light and during day hours too, barking constantly at nothing. I believe it has anxiety issues or its owners don’t take the time to train it. I like dogs; they are all around me, but this one is the only one that barks nonstop. Have some respect for your neighbors who have children who go to school and some people who work late night hours. For the respect of your neighbors, take the time to train your dog! Enough is enough. People with constantly barking dogs can get a fine of up to 250 bucks. I’ve done my research! If you’re home all day and leave that dog out to bark, then you have time to train it!
blame on the daughter-in-law and not the son she raised. Why is she not having this conversation with her son? He is the one who should be making these choices and insisting on including his parents in family events. Maybe it’s time for him to put on his big boy pants and act like a considerate adult. What does it say about the way he was raised if he does not have consideration for his parents? This is not a one-way street. If you want this to change, then your son is the one you should be speaking to.
I had to respond to “Attention Daughterin-law.” She puts all the

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to my neighbor, Rich. His business is next to mine and for the last two years whenever it snows, he has shoveled our front walkway. It’s good to know that such considerate people still exist! Thank you for your thoughtfulness and keeping our sidewalks safe. Thursday morning, as I was walking to open our Main Street office for business, I slipped on the black ice and fell. If it wasn’t for Canandaigua City Worker, Kyle, I might have been one with the ground for a while. Thanks, Kyle, for the help and for clearing away the snow and ice. Stop into LVOY anytime, the coffee’s always on.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to an unknown Walmart Superhero! I have never had this happen to me or even someone close to me before, but right before the big game on Sunday, a knight in shining armor paid for our groceries! We were struggling to just have a small set up of snacks and drinks for a few close friends, and this Walmart Superhero made it possible! Of course, I had to ask what team he was rooting for, and in turn, we cheered on Kansas City in his honor! In light of his act of kindness, Kansas City won! Rest assured if I am ever in a position to pay it forward by an act of kindness for someone else, I will surely do so!

cancer and has just started her chemotherapy. I am concerned about her decision to fast for two days before and one day after each treatment. She weighs only 90 pounds, and fasting while you are trying to fight cancer does not sound like a good idea. What is your opinion of fasting during chemotherapy? -- K.B. ANSWER: In theory, fasting may make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and there have been studies in mice suggesting this approach might have value. However, during chemotherapy, the whole body needs good-quality nutrition, and I could not recommend fasting for someone who weighs so little, nor could I recommend two full days of fasting before chemotherapy. Until there is clear evidence that intermittent fasting is of benefit, I don’t recommend it. Your daughter-in-law, in particular, is not a good candidate, being so very thin (assuming she is of near-normal height).

you knew anything about the effect of Advil on men with enlarged prostates. It seemed that ibuprofen decreased his trips to the bathroom. I have found the same thing myself. Taking two Advil allows me to wait five to six hours before having to urinate. Has there been more research on why this happens? -- S.Z. ANSWER: There is some more information. Men with symptoms of enlarged prostate often have increased urinary frequency, combined with incomplete emptying. This makes sense; if you can’t empty your entire bladder, you will have to empty it more frequently. So it seems the ibuprofen is letting you empty the bladder more completely. There are two major reasons for incomplete emptying, and different theories for why ibuprofen might work on each. Benign (not cancerous) enlargement of the prostate is one reason. In this case, it is hypothesized that ibuprofen stops the growth of cells in the prostate, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. Reducing the size of the prostate can allow better, more complete urine flow. The other common cause of the prostate symptoms is inflammation of the prostate. In this case, ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reducing symptoms is easier to understand. The fact that it works so quickly for you suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is more important in your case. Ibuprofen does have possible side effects, but two ibuprofen once a day is unlikely to cause significant problems. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My teen likes vegetables and eats right. He also drinks a lot of water, works out and doesn’t like soda. He and my sister have chronic constipation. They both now take a magnesium supplement and feel great. Is that OK? -- T.M.S. ANSWER: Magnesium is a common and safe treatment for constipation. A healthy diet, exercise and drinking plenty of water are good ideas for anyone with constipation, but some people do need additional help. I have previously mentioned prunes (or prune juice) as an option, but magnesium, if taken at a dose to ensure regular but not excessive bowel movements, is a fine treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Valentine’s Day is second only to the holiday season with regard to gift giving. Although this day devoted to love and exchanging gifts can be wasteful, that does not mean those with a mind toward green and simple living should ignore the holiday altogether. Valentine’s Day celebrations can be enjoyed in an eco-friendly way that can make this special day even more meaningful to eco-conscious couples.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant.
On the other hand, I don’t understand the enthusiasm for everything in the antique shop that Grandma threw out. There, the sense of quality has declined; otherwise Grandma wouldn’t have thrown it out. ~Arne Jacobsen
For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
Inside Sales/Customer Service
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.
Avon Office We’re searching for an energetic team- oriented person with superior customer service skills!
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”
Must be detail oriented and have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment. Excellent time management, computer experience (e-mail, data entry) a must. Telemarketing and/or sales experience a plus.
It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”
Email resume and cover letter to the Avon Office: manuelkaram@gvpennysaver.com
Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

(NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. Learn More: For further facts or to register, go to www.lycoming.edu. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

TWICE A VICTIM: FINDING A PATH FORWARD AFTER AN ACCIDENT (NAPSI)—Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are injured in serious accidents. Though the causes may be different, one thing is increasingly common: Because there are often long delays in collecting payments for legitimate insurance claims, injured parties can become “twice victims.” An All-Too-Common Story “The bus accident caused serious injury to my right wrist and I broke my left ankle,” said Debra A., a school aide working with disabled children. “During a class trip, the school bus was in an accident and my entire life changed in an instant. While there were safety features on the bus for the children, there were none for the adults. When we crashed, I flew forward and quickly realized I was seriously hurt,” she added. Debra’s injuries were so serious she could not return to work. Soon, she faced mounting medical bills, she was delinquent on her mortgage, and all her general household and family expenses were piling up. She had nowhere to go and no one to turn to for financial support. There were no family members who could loan her money and since she was out of work, no bank would either. Debra was a victim, not once, but twice. She was hurt in the accident and soon thereafter, she was hurting from the financial realities of life. With the assistance of her attorney, Debra sued the bus operator whose insurance company fought her for years. “I never dreamed it would take 10 years for the insurance company to pay me the money I was entitled to,” she said. “Everything I worked for, everything I owned was soon going to be lost because the insurance company was finding every reason not to settle. The most insulting part of it all was that during the entire insurance settlement process, I had the feeling that the insurance company was simply trying to wear me down by offering me much less than my attorney felt my claim was really worth. They probably assumed I was getting desperate and they figured I’d jump at a low settlement offer. I almost did. “With my back against the wall and no place else to turn for financial help, I found a silver lining in LawCash, a leader in the presettlement legal funding industry. The cash advances from LawCash saved my house, gave me the freedom to take care of necessary expenses, and more important, the advances gave me peace of mind to continue to pursue my case. I felt empowered,” Debra added. “Once my case was resolved on terms that were fair, I paid back my legal advance and I was able to move on with my life.” How Presettlement Funding Works The service does not promote or encourage litigation. All its clients must be represented by legal counsel and must have filed a legitimate claim before LawCash will accept an application. Nor does it influence the case, as all decisions related to the legal approach and overall strategy are between the victim and his or her lawyer. Perhaps most important, the presettlement funding is not a loan. If the case is lost, the claimants owe nothing. In addition, they’re not required to put up collateral or make interim payments, and the advance has no effect on their credit. After the accident, Debra was not able to work with her disabled students any longer, but she has not lost her interest in helping others. She is even asking her State Legislators to think about their constituents when considering access to this critical legal funding resource.
