ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS:

Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

The company that publishes the Penny Saver is now known as Featured Media. Our vast array of offerings will provide the community with excellence in advertising in all its forms. We hope you’ll explore all the services we provide to help you grow and tell your story to the community. While technology is constantly changing, our commitment to getting your message out is not.

A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring.

Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains.

HOW

Identify problems with paint. If paint is peeling, bubbling or cracking, it’s likely indicative of a mold issue. In such instances, contact a mold remediation specialist rather than simply painting over the affected areas with a fresh coat of paint. WHAT

When you need an electrician…

Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE

There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer.

North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Landscape Design and Installation

We have a complete landscape design and installation service available. In addition to plantings, we install walks, walls and patios, and perform Spring and Fall cleanup and mulching. If you are looking for someone to plant just one tree or do a whole landscape renovation, call us for a free quote.

Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes:

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper

Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.

Second-hand items: Avoid electrical or gas products if a label from a recognized certification organization, such as CSA Group, is missing. Look closely at the mark to ensure it matches the design and colour of certification marks from the same organization on other similar products.

SENIOR NEWS

Somehow my cellphone number ended up on somebody’s list. Now I’m receiving daily text messages saying that my Amazon Prime account is about to be canceled for nonpayment -- unless I immediately click the link and give them my credit card number. Some of the messages say the account has already been canceled but I can get it back by -- you guessed it -- giving them my credit card number within an hour.

I don’t think so.

I’m on a phone list for Net ix as well. I called Net ix and no, my account is not about to be suspended. Said the representative: “You’re on automatic pay. If somehow a payment isn’t made, it’s our fault for not processing it.”

If you’re getting those “you’re late” messages on your cellphone, beware. Don’t accidentally touch the link in the message. It will take you to a website that looks real but is not, and just connecting to it can download a virus on your phone. Back out carefully and delete the text message. Take your time.

Don’t try to contact the scammers to ask to be taken o their list. It only veri es that yours is a good number and it will be sold to others.

If you want to report these scams, go to reportfraud. c. gov.

Daisy Girl Scouts Serve Community Meal with Smiles!

1st grade Daisy Girl Scout Troop 40062 of the VictorFarmington Service Unit helped serve the free community dinner on March 11th at the Presbyterian Church on Main St. in Victor.

Co-leader Katie Rine said, “A lot of troop leaders in our Service Unit are very active in our community. One in particular, Heather McAdoo, helps to organize the community dinners … three Saturdays each month. Di erent organizations act as hosts and provide dinner, dessert, and volunteers” to run the event.

Rine said, “ is was our troop’s rst time hosting and it won’t be our last! e girls (and parents) really enjoyed it!”

e dinner that day was a baked potato bar. Co-leader Christin Morse said the moms served the potatoes and topped them with the hot items (chili and broccoli) and the guests continued down the line to help themselves to other toppings (bacon, cheese, sour cream, chives). e troop also served salad and cookies to round out the meal.

e girls set tables with silverware, napkins, salt and pepper, and butter. ey brought out toppings for the baked potato bar, mixed fruit punch in pitchers, and re lled items as they emptied. roughout dinner, the girls went around to guests, asking if anyone needed anything, more to drink, another napkin, etc. When guests nished, the girls cleared the tables and brought the empty dishes to the kitchen to be washed.

is meal is o ered as eat-in or take-out, and Morse said that the meal served approximately 70 diners. Morse said, “ is was our rst time serving a community dinner and we are looking forward to our next!”

Guests said it was “so nice to be served by helpful, sweet, smiley girls.”

e girls said the best part of the event was going around to each table during dinner to ask if anyone needed anything. All agreed the “best part was serving. But really the best part was everything.”

Morse said they are a young troop, and this was their rst service project. Before that, the troop collected donations for e Spot (thespotny.org) as part of earning their Making Choices and Good Neighbor badges. e Spot provides free school supplies, clothing, food, and shoes to UPK-12 students in need within the Victor school district.

Rine said, “We collected 5 pairs of socks, 10 pairs of gloves, 11 winter hats, a bag of personal care items, and enough snacks to supply the Victor Early Childhood School’s resource room for one month.”

Karen Hansen, another mom within the unit, organizes each community dinner’s musical entertainment with various genres, instruments, ages, etc. of local talented artists. Hansen says she even takes a turn performing on the piano. She says, “ ese dinners are a big asset to our community.”

To volunteer as a host or as musical entertainment for these dinners, please call, text, or email Hansen at 585-703-7432 / Karenhansen7@hotmail.com

e Presbyterian Church has served this community dinner for 17 years. Each 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturday of the month from 5-6:30pm, enjoy a sit-down, family-style wholesome dinner cooked and served by volunteer hosts. All are welcome. Take-out meals are available for people who call the church at 585-924-2289 during the Community Dinner time. Dinners will be brought out to your car.

e community Toiletry Closet is open during this time as well, so families and individuals may ll their household needs as they ll their bellies in fellowship.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE TRADING IN YOUR CAR

Hone your negotiation skills. Dealers may initially offer less than drivers expect, as they, too, will try to make the transaction as beneficial as possible to their bottom lines. In such situations, drivers who want to get a better trade-in value should be prepared to negotiate. Some dealerships may not budge on their initial trade-in values, but some might, and drivers prepared to negotiate a better value are in the best position to get a good deal.

HOW TO FIND A CAR THAT FITS YOUR

Seek out no-markup dealerships - It may take some investigation, but there are certain dealerships that are not adding astronomical markups, also called “market adjustments,” to the costs of their vehicles. These dealers may advertise online, and car buyers can always call ahead to ask about markups.

RAVES

A Long Overdue Thank You

I want to sincerely thank all of the people who stopped to help after my accident on February 13th on I-390 (Groveland Road). I will never forget the people who took time out of their evening to make sure I (and the other individual) were okay. Thanks to the man who let me use his cell phone....it was very nice of you. A huge thank you to Trooper Anderson for your kindness, professionalism, and helpfulness. You are all angels!

Farmington Fire Dept. and Water Dept. Many Thanks!

I want to RAVE about my town’s Volunteers - Chief Phil Robinson, Dawn Malcomb & Matt Hauf and crew with the Fire Dept. Also, Josh Fagner and crew at the Water Dept. Thank you all for coming to our rescue on a Saturday morning with our basement water problem! You all saved our basement from extensive damage! Your kindness, extra help and care are appreciated. We are so grateful to you all!

An ER MD at Rochester General Hospital was a Gem

In mid-October 2022 I went to the Rochester General Hospital emergency room (ER) and got there about 6:15PM. I went there because at about 5:15PM I took my blood pressure with my home device. It registered 202/102 which, for an 81 year old man, was very high. After waiting about an hour a nurse called me to the ER examine room and found my blood pressure lower at 155/95. A doctor then came in and after many medical questions stated I could leave and see my own MD the next day. I advised him that I had a problem. My wife was in the main waiting area in the front of the hospital being brought there in a wheelchair cause she could not stay in the darkish ER corridor with me. Also my car was in the ER parking lot. Dr. Singh became a gem and a savior. He got a wheelchair and pushed me to where my wife was. Then he got my 80 year-old wife in the wheelchair and pushed her for 10 minutes with me behind out of the waiting room through the ER to the ER exit. What Dr S. did was above and beyond

If you can walk to get a shopping cart or handicap cart, why can’t you return it to the store or cart corral? The answer is just plain laziness! Instead, some leave them between parked cars or in front of their own car and then look around to see if anyone is watching before quickly scurrying away. Even with children, you still have to get one when you arrive. How would you like it if the wind blew one into your car and dented it? Bet you wouldn’t.

No delivery is that important

I was heading to [local town] about 6pm Friday and got almost to [local road] and someone with a red delivery sign on top came down [local road] doing about 60-70 mph and blew the stop sign straight across to [local road]. He had to be doing 70 mph down [local road]. Thank god there was not anyone coming the other way. I did not catch what delivery it was, just that it was a dark blue or black car or SUV with a red sign on top. There is no delivery that important to speed like that. Should be held accountable.

Lanes

Right lane ends, merge left doesn’t mean accelerate then cut off the car that’s already in the proper lane. Slow down. Do you feel you have to be in front? You don’t have the right away!

Cage free: Eggs labeled “cage free” means that the hens that laid the eggs were not raised in caged housing systems, which the Humane Society of the United States has described as inhumane. The organization Food and Water Watch notes that living conditions for hens raised in cage-free environments may still be poor.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, itisoneofthemost visited places in the United States.

Cranberry Chutney

Makes 3 cups

1 1-pound bag fresh cranberries

2 navel oranges, unpeeled, cut into 6 wedges and then into thin slices

1⁄3 cup golden raisins

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1⁄2 teaspoon whole cloves

1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger

1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄2 cup apple cider

1⁄2 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey

1⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar

1. Pour the cranberries into a 2-quart pot. Add the oranges, raisins, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, salt, apple cider, honey, and vinegar. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the chutney thickens, about 20 minutes.

2. Remove from the heat and serve warm or, if you prefer, chill and serve cold.

How to Stop Dogs From Roughhousing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I moved in together recently, and we each brought a dog with us. I’ve got a German Shepherd named Mac, and her Golden Retriever is Diz. Both are about 2 years old, and they get along ne. However, in the evenings they roughhouse in the living room. We want them to just settle down so we can watch TV. Is this possible? -Laura N., Augusta, Georgia

DEAR LAURA: It’s very possible, even with younger dogs. And the sooner you establish behavior norms around a schedule, the better.

Diz’s playful personality probably balances out Mac’s serious working dog persona, so take advantage of this.

Wear them out: Both of these breeds are energetic. It’ll be much easier to keep them calm if you take them out for a walk or a romp at a dog park for about an hour before dinner and TV time.

Set the behavior: When it’s TV time, bring them into the room and give the “sit” or “lie down” and “stay” commands to each dog. Give them a treat only when they obey the commands.

Correct and redirect: When the dogs begin to wrestle or steal each other’s toys, tell them to stop. Call both dogs over and work on the basic commands again, then have them sit or lie down in the original spots.

Separate them: If they begin roughhousing again and no longer respond to commands, take Diz into one room and Mac into another.

is will take time and repetition. e goal is to get them to follow your commands for longer and longer periods until you no longer have to separate them. Be prepared to pause the TV and focus on their training for days or weeks. e long-term reward is worth it.

Men With Factor V Leiden Can Still Receive Testosterone Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Factor V Leiden, but I have been wanting to do testosterone replacement therapy. I have heard that testosterone causes blood clots. Obviously, with FVL, that would be a huge deal for me. Is this true? Does it cause clots, or is it safe for me to do? -- R.C.

ANSWER: Factor V Leiden is a common genetic variant that increases a person’s risk for developing a blood clot. However, a person who has never had a blood clot, but who is identified as heterozygous (meaning they only have one copy of the gene) for factor V Leiden, is still not likely to have a blood clot during their lifetime and is not recommended for treatment to prevent a blood clot.

Testosterone replacement therapy in men with FVL does increase the risk of blood clots in some studies, but not in others. In the studies that have shown an increase in risk, the risk has been estimated as approximately one person per thousand treated with testosterone each year. However, the risk occurs mostly during the first three months, and after two years on treatment, there is no additional risk. Thus, roughly one man per 500 who has FVL and gets treated with testosterone will get a clot, according to the studies that show an increase in risk. This is a small risk, but a blood clot is a significant potential problem. So, the risk of getting a clot should certainly go into the discussion about whether to give testosterone replacement to a man with FVL and symptomatic low testosterone levels. Most of the men I have seen with this issue have elected to take the replacement.

WATCH OUT FOR CREEPS

The book of Jude (half-brother of Jesus) at the end of the KJV Bible says in verse 4: For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. God warns us of CREEPS: lives ungodly and twists the grace of God to their own means and deny that Jesus is God in flesh. If He’s not God, then His blood shed on the cross wouldn’t have the power to save us from our sins and hell. Seeing He did resurrect the 3rd day, we that trust NOT in our good deeds, church, religion, or baptism but only in Jesus have a Great Eternity in store. YES! Thank you LORD.

Kick Start Spring With A Finished Basement

An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply finishing the space with wall and floor coverings, you will notice a difference on your energy bills. A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.

Insulation is a key component in making your basement look and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and better thermal performance.

MARCH 2023

This celebration is a great opportunity to learn more about mother nature.

In ancient times, kingdoms in Babylon, Egypt, and Persia spent a huge amount of their cities’ wealth on constructing elaborate gardens. What’s more, they pioneered the technology of irrigation systems, which became a vital part of modern-day gardening.

Gardening, Nature, and Ecology Books Month Fun Facts

The best way to celebrate Gardening, Nature and Ecology Books Month is to plant a seed. There’s nothing better than witnessing a flower grow after weeks of watering and nourishing!

What flower is the easiest to grow? Sunflowers

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* The way some items are packaged these days, you need to be Houdini to get into them. When you’re dealing with blister packs -- items sealed inside a hard plastic wrapper that looks to be heat crimped on the outsides -- try your can opener. You can run it around the edge of stubborn plastic packages, enough to get the item out. It’s more secure than a carpet knife or razor.

* Want to be able to tell at a glance which key belongs to the front door, the shed, your grandma’s house, etc.? Raid your (or your wife’s or daughter’s) stash of nail polish to paint the tops of keys to color code them.

* “Styrofoam trays that come with meat or in the produce area are very handy helpers for lots of little jobs. If yours are clean and unmarred, wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry for later. They are perfect for sending a friend home with leftovers, as you can cover the meal with plastic wrap. There is then no need to return a plate.” -- D. in Indiana

* For a deck of playing cards that has gotten sticky, put it in a bag (paper or plastic) and add a bit of baby powder. Shake vigorously. Take the cards out and shuffle to get off the extra powder. They are likely good as new.

* “Tidy loosely folded electric cords by storing them in cardboard tubes. The tubes can be cut to fit from a paper towel roll, or you can use a smaller, toilet-paper roll. Even long cords can be stored together in a giftwrap core. Do not overfill a tube, nor wind any electrical cord too tightly.”

-- O.R. in Nevada

* If you have a juice spill on clothing, try club soda to remove it when the stain is fresh.
