Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. David Rearson, Firefighter of the Egypt Fire Department for 55 Years By Randal Simonetti
A
s the 75th anniversary of the Egypt Fire Department approaches, perhaps no other member of the department has more active firefighting and department leadership experience than David Rearson as he celebrates 55 years of serving the Perinton area as an active volunteer firefighter. During his tenure in the department, David has held the rank of Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief and Chief, holding the top leadership role from 1975 until 1977 and ag again from 2015 to 2016. David was born in Macedon, New York on Sunday, January 31, 1943 during a furious snow storm. The weather was so bad the doctor had to deliver David at home. He recalls, “I later learned that my mom was upset that she had to miss church that Sunday morning. However, my two older sisters were thrilled I had arrived so they could take a break from the regular Sunday routine.” David started school a year early so he would remain the youngest member of his class right through high school. He started his education in a one-room school house which still stands today on the corner of Wilson Road and Route 31. When his family moved to Fairport in 1949, he attended a two-room school house located on Turk Hill Road which also still stands today. David was inspired by several of his teachers. He remembers learning Algebra unlocked the world of measuring things including recipes and building projects. “My English teacher taught me the challenges of a dangling participle which I can honestly say I have never used from that day forward. I also appreciated my business teacher who helped prepare us for the future by teaching us to dress for success and demonstrate humility when participating in a job interview.” As a student at Fairport High School, he excelled in soccer, playing every minute of every game for all four high school seasons. At 17, David, too young to join on his own, convinced his mother to sign his application for the United States Air Force. He celebrated his 18th birthday in basic training at Lakeland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He does not recommend this to others as he missed out on a real birthday cake that year. He remembers viewing the opening of the movie, The Alamo while living in San Antonio only several miles from the actual Alamo. He completed his technical training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and was permanently assigned to Luke AFB in Glendale, Arizona where he specialized in combat water treatment as a member of the engineering group.
against each other in department softball, golf and bowling teams, giving firefighters a chance to really get to know each other. They also had many dinner celebrations where spouses could enjoy the traditions and camaraderie. David’s most frightening moments came in 1976 while fighting a barn fire on a potato farm. The concrete floor collapsed under David and a dozen other firefighters, falling on top of two firefighters below. The two firefighters on the lower David married high school sweetheart, level were saved because Margaret Buholtz they were standing in a reinforced potato bunker on the edge of the structure while the collapsing concrete formed a slide, keeping David and his team from being trapped underneath the rubble. David explained, “We scampered up that broken concrete like mice running from a flood.” His most traumatic moment came as Deputy Chief. He arrived on the scene of a two-car motor vehicle accident at which there were five fatalities. “I remember getting there within two minutes of the crash and saying to myself, these people can’t be dead, they’re still warm. Nothing ever prepares you for that kind of experience. Many of us took a long time to get over it.” During David’s tenure at the Egypt Fire Department, he has watched the organization grow from just five fire vehicles to seven trucks, three emergency squad cars and a new fire police truck. Today, David and Margaret take great pleasure watching their five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren grow. In addition, they enjoy skiing, golf and biking. David shares, “It is a real honor and privilege to serve with my colleagues at the Egypt Fire House. I look forward to celebrating many more years serving the Perinton community.” This is the first in a series of articles submitted by Randal Simonetti, EFD Director of Public Affairs, recognizing the courage and commitment of the volunteer fighterfighters of the Egypt Fire Department as the organization prepares for its 75th anniversary. He can be reached at ras@ignitionltd.com or at 585-738-8333.
Five months before he completed his service, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Buholtz. They moved back to the area in 1964 and had two children, daughter Deborah who now works locally in the healthcare field and son Darryl who works in the IT Department of Johnson & Johnson in Philadelphia.
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
David’s Air Force experience served him well as he took his first job in East Rochester working in the waste water treatment industry. He would later join the Monroe County Water Authority, working his way up to Plant Manager when he retired in 1998.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Page 11

Manage Your Blood Pressure And Protect Your Kidneys (NAPSI) - Did you know if
you have high blood pressure you are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease? High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States. About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. If your blood pressure gets too high, the blood vessels in your body‚ including those in your kidneys‚ may become damaged. This damage makes it harder for the kidneys to filter blood and remove wastes and extra water from the body. Kidney disease can get worse over time, and if not treated it can lead to kidney failure. And while high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, the reverse is also true: kidney disease can lead to high blood pressure. Simple tests can tell you whether you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. Ask your health care professional if you have been tested for high blood pressure and kidney disease. Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease are aware they have the disease. This is because kidney disease often doesn’t have any symptoms early on. The good news is that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter, airs for the first time. Carter answered calls from all over the country from his desk in the Oval Office. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the CBS radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours.
“Our research continues to uncover the complexities of the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease,” says Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “And what we are finding supports the message that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.” Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that help you manage your blood pressure will also help to keep your kidneys healthy. You can prevent or slow kidney disease progression by taking the following steps to lower your blood pressure: Take medicines as prescribed. Blood pressure medicines often play a key role in lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight or have obesity, reducing your weight may lower high blood pressure. Select healthier food and beverage options. Follow a healthy eating plan that focuses on heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats that are low in sodium. Stop smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases your risk for high blood pressure, and worsens problems related to high blood pressure. For help quitting, call 1-800-QUITNOW or go to Smokefree.gov. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure and metabolism. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Manage stress and make physical activity part of your routine. Healthy stress-reducing activities and regular physical activity can lower blood pressure. Try to get at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day. “You can manage your blood pressure and its complications through healthy lifestyle habits, which include exercise, following a healthy eating plan and taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by your doctor,” says Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “It’s important to know your numbers because controlling or lowering your blood pressure can prevent or delay serious complications like kidney disease and heart disease.” For more information, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. ECOTOURISM ON THE RISE According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of local people and involves interpretation and education. Ecotourism aims to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for nature, local societies and their cultures. In a 2015 study of the travel industry by the consulting firm Deloitte, travelers expressed a heightened interest in spending on eco-friendly travel. The study also found that an overwhelming majority of business travelers (95 percent) felt that sustainability will become a defining issue for the hospitality industry in years to come. In fact, in a 2015 report titled “Travel & Tourism 2015: Connecting Global Climate Action,” the World Travel & Tourism Council reported that travelers are increasingly expecting tourism businesses to become sustainable in the same way they expect complementary Wi-Fi connectivity in hotels and online check-ins for air travel. Such information should be encouraging for environmentalists and travelers alike, as data indicates efforts to promote eco-friendly travel are proving effective and increasingly driving travelers to demand that tourism-based businesses meet their demands for travel that’s both rewarding and beneficial to the planet. D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

As virtually everyone realizes, the keys to a successful outcome of any worthwhile undertaking are communication, cooperation and coordination among and between the participants. Numerous people had a hand in making this project happen, and they deserve being complimented by name: Preston Pierce, Judi Cermak, Ed Varno, Ethan Fogg, Doug Finch, John Goodwin, former Mayor Ellen Polimeni, Fred and Nancy Goodnow, Assemblyman Brian Kolb, Valerie Knoblauch and Sheriff Kevin Henderson. over a bit, I would question your driving abilities. If you stubbornly stayed in the lane and caused a crash, you can tell it to the Judge. Why? Because you had the right of way, you were justified? Police go around vehicles, also. Do you complain about them too? With so many cars on the roads you must be more flexible and understanding. Uber may be a better alternative for you.
Yeah, we know you have the right of way. My question is, would you purposely cause an accident because you have that right of away? If someone’s going around a delivery truck or mail truck and crosses the center line by a foot or two, why can’t you just move over? Nobody’s trying to force you into a ditch. If you can’t move

This has been going on all year for several years at one farm in particular. The roadway is constantly covered. INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability.

In an effort to encourage more accountability and responsive behavior from the International Joint Commission, a bill put forward by Upstate New York Congressmen Katko, Brindisi and Morelle would allow lawsuits against the IJC which regulates Lake Ontario water levels. Do you agree with this? • Yes! The IJC is responsible! • No! Water levels result from nature!
Poll Ends 03-10-20 Results From 03-03-20 New York State Police, one of few primary state law enforcement agencies without dashboard or body cameras, plans to launch a body camera pilot program for state troopers. Do you agree with their plan? 92% Absolutely! It makes everyone safer. 8% No way! It violates privacy. We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice heard!
The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.

To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line.

“The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall.

chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
