(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

Working From Home With Pets Around DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've been working from home for the past two weeks, and my dog and cat, "Mutt" and "Shelley," won't leave me alone! I tried putting them into the bedroom during conference calls, but they yowl and meow nonstop. What can I do Brad in Boston DEAR BRAD: Ah, the joys of working from home: like your cat walking across the keyboard. It's clear that your pets are overjoyed to see you at home all day. They're thinking, "Yes! Dad's here! He didn't leave for hours and hours today! We can play with him all day!" And then they pester you for attention nonstop, right? And when you shut them in the bedroom, they're not happy. "Dad's in there! In the other room! Come let us out so we can play with you!" Like millions of people, your work routine has changed for at least several weeks. That means your pets' routines have changed, too, and you need to establish new ones. First thing in the morning, give Shelley and Mutt lots of attention. Take Mutt out for a walk and play/training session where you reinforce basic commands and let him burn off energy. Indoors, grab a cat toy and play with Shelley for a bit. If you have a scheduled conference call, take Mutt out again for a few minutes or play with him indoors beforehand. This may calm him enough that he can remain in the room. Take frequent five-minute breaks and give attention to your pets each time. Use this remote working as an opportunity to train your pets and spend more time with them. They can provide plenty of stress relief, too -- something we all need right about now.

1. Cut material and interfacing to 12 x 9 inches 2. Iron interfacing to material (adhesive side to back of material) 3. Once ironed, fold fabric in half with interfacing on the outside 4. Cut two pieces of elastic — each 7-inches long 5. Pin and sew 1/4-inch from edge leaving a 2-inch gap in the center 6. Put elastic band on each corner, inside the material and pin to keep in place, making sure the elastic is not twisted. Pin in center as well 7. Sew along both edges, making sure to sew extra stitches in the elastic. Turn the fabric right side out through the 2” gap. Iron mask flat. 8. Fold 2 pleats. Sew around the entire perimeter of the mask. This holds the pleats in place and closes the 2-inch gap.
Test out your new mask when it’s necessary to head out to do your grocery shopping or wherever social distancing may be difficult.
FYI… You can use any sort of cotton fabric. Why not cut up an old t-shirt with your favorite team’s logo on it! And, if you don’t have interfacing, never fear. Any mask is better than no mask! Page 7

The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event. Stay Fed, Stay Safe Life has certainly changed recently. Depending on where you live, it might have changed a lot. Stay home if you're a senior. Stay home if you have a medical condition. That's what we've been told. That's all well and good, but what if we really need to shop for food? What if we couldn't stock up last week because the Social Security benefit hadn't made it to our checking account yet? If you're really in a jam for food, call the food bank. Of all the places, that one is most likely to still be open. They're trying to keep people fed, especially seniors, as well as children who don't get free meals because the schools are now closed. Ask if they have a driveup pantry where you can be handed some bags of food through the car window. You might find that food is being distributed at places like the senior center or a school parking lot or via Meals on Wheels, even if you aren't signed up as a participant. If you do dare to enter a store, a number of grocery stores are designating the first hour or two in the morning for seniors only. Not all stores are doing this, so call first. If they don't do it, suggest it. You're more likely to find the things you need during this time as the shelves will (hopefully) be restocked overnight. And with fewer people in the store, you're less likely to run into someone with the virus, but stay away from other people anyway. If you go, be sure to take sanitizing wipes for the cart handles. Remember, if you go out, you're really not safe from the virus. Do it as little as possible.
Do you relish the idea of an afternoon nap? If so, you're in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Napoleon, and Albert Einstein each fancied afternoon naps. Youngsters nap, and so do many seniors. But by and large, humans are part of the minority of mammals that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleep-deprived. It also may be a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Son’s Admiration Sets Course for Firefighting By Randal Simonetti
T
hey were born in Korea, and at just four months of age, twins Andrew and Philip would embark on an extraordinary voyage to Fairport, New York, as the adopted sons of Michael and Bernadette Palermo. They would soon experience the wonders of living in America and the opportunity afforded to all Americans. Their father, Michael, is an Impact Manager for RQI Partners, LLC (Resuscitation Quality Improvement) working with clients who use their resuscitation programs. When the Palermos moved to Fairport, Michael became involved in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and worked as an EMT for over 15 years before the travel demands of his company prevented him from working with any local EMS agencies.
Andrew Palermo of the Egypt Fire Department stands in dress uniform. After September 11th, Michael applied to the Egypt Fire Department and became a firefighter in November of 2001. He has maintained his NYS EMT certification for over 30 years. In addition, Michael has held several leadership roles in the department and is currently the president of the board of trustees. As an active member of the Egypt Fire Department, Michael would respond to many alarms with his two boys in tow. Upon arrival, he would leave the boys in the good hands of retired chief Harold “Bumps” Mance. Bumps was a veteran firefighter of over 35 years, and he loved entertaining the boys until the fire trucks returned. Watching his dad respond to alarms coupled with encouragement from “Bumps” further reinforced the idea of becoming a firefighter for Andrew. “I quickly observed that Andrew truly relished becoming a firefighter because he had a true interest in helping others,” explains Michael. During his elementary and middle school education at St. John’s and St. Joseph’s Schools, Andrew looked forward to the school visits to the local fire house. He would further explore his interests in firefighting by accompanying his dad during truck maintenance sessions where he was exposed to the different types of fire vehicles and the myriad of equipment used to fight fires and rescue people trapped in buildings or cars. This further fueled his motivation to join the fire explorer group sponsored by the Fairport Fire Department. As an Explorer, Andrew participated in many of the drills and simulations active firefighters experienced in preparation for real emergencies. “I was always drawn to the idea that I could be part of a team whose primary goal was to serve the community and actually make a difference in people’s lives,” Andrew explains. Andrew had another calling as well. As a child, he had a habit of banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons. His sense of timing and rhythm were uncanny. His friends and parents are not surprised that at the age of 20, he is a drummer in a local band, “The Fender

Benders,” and alongside his dad, is an active member of the Egypt Fire Department. Andrew’s commitment to the department was never more evident than when he completed his formal firefighting training and then rushed home to get dressed for his McQuaid High School graduation. “One of my favorite activities is making school visits and talking to students about fire safety. It’s my chance to Andrew Palermo, communicate a sense Egypt Fire Department excitement and pride in being a member of the Egypt Fire Department. I never know who will be inspired by my presentation,” shares Andrew. “We are very proud of Andrew’s achievements as a firefighter and now as the youngest member of the board of trustees. He is a great role model for any young person considering joining the fire service,” said Egypt Fire Chief, Alex Klimchuk. Today, Andrew continues his studies at Finger Lakes Community College on route to his long-term career goal of working in law enforcement. Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

It’s sad that someone must vent about people leaving the painted rocks in parks. All they want to do is brighten someone’s day. They take the time to do this, which I think is great. Especially now, when hiking is about the only thing that we can do. I can’t wait to find one and pay it forward.
Thanks to all my family and friends who took the time to wish me a Happy 92nd Birthday and for the morning serenade on my yard. I appreciate the thought, and it made my day much more special.
Thank you to the City of Canandaigua for repairing the sidewalks at the lower end of Main Street, near the Native American statue going north to Lindsey’s Nail Salon. This has made walking with wheeled vehicles so much easier as you also removed the roots where the trees were pushing up the sidewalks. Thank you!
To everyone who is able to stay home or is employed at a job where you are able to wash your hands when needed: Have you even thought about the people whose jobs take them out of the house everyday -- into their vehicles or a job site where there is not sink to wash? They rely on the hand sanitizer to effectively prevent illness. Shame on you if you are one of those people who won’t share what you don’t even need because you are home or at a job where you can wash multiple times per day or as needed. Just wash your hands and cover your mouth when coughing and don’t get too close to others. Also, stop hoarding things! That is mean! Regarding the person who complained that their groceries were not packed properly: I had the same problem, plus the bags were packed too heavy. I solved both problems. I fold my reusable bags and place them in one bag. When I get to the checkout, I place one folded bag on the conveyer and place the groceries I want in that bag behind it. I do the same with the second bag, etc. Produce is with produce, meat with meat, etc., and bags are light. I leave the store a happy person.

To the person who ranted about Painted Rocks littering the parks, when I read it, all I could say is wow! I love to see the painted rocks in the parks, and I do not consider them as litter. Everyone I know smiles when they see them! I agree with you about littering; what you bring into the park should be what you take out with you. But the painted rocks spread joy and happiness, which is what we need more of, especially during this time. Please do not be so grumpy about the painted rocks.

Vitamin D Works Slowly ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any reason to start taking vitamin D at age 90? I’m in good health except for osteopenia and high blood pressure. How long does it take to have an effect? -- P.S. ANSWER: In your case, there are potentially two good reasons to start taking vitamin D -- if your blood levels are low. One is that with osteopenia (a condition of low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis, which increases risk for bone fractures), replacing low vitamin D can improve bone strength and reverse bone loss. This can keep people from needing other medications for osteoporosis, which are much more likely than vitamin D to have side effects. Older people with vitamin D deficiency also often have some muscle weakness. If you can’t get out of a chair without using your hands and you have a low vitamin D level, replacing vitamin D may help with the weakness. Of course, there are many causes for weakness in a person and there is no guarantee of effectiveness, but vitamin D is very safe in moderate doses, like 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily. Vitamin D also may reduce fall risk, probably by improving strength, especially in combination with exercise. Vitamin D works slowly -- weeks to months for muscle effects, and months to years for bone effects. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was seeing my primary care physician every six months for about five years. We had mutual respect, and I enjoyed seeing him. Then, I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had to see other doctors for a long time. Meanwhile, the spinal stenosis my primary care physician had diagnosed was becoming untenable and ruining my quality of life. Even though I am still seeing cancer doctors, I called my primary care physician to make an appointment to discuss the spinal stenosis situation with him. After a long wait, I finally got someone in my primary care physician’s office and, after another long wait, was informed that he could not see me for six months -- there was not one opening until then. I was flabbergasted and asked to be put on a cancellation list. “We don’t keep those,” the lady responded. I reluctantly took the appointment and decided to wait it out. Meanwhile, I saw one of my cancer doctors today, and after explaining this situation to him, he replied: “Doctors don’t do that. He obviously doesn’t want you as a patient anymore. I would find another primary care physician.” What is your response to this? I am 71 years old, and other than spinal stenosis and breast cancer (which was caught early and treated with surgery and radiation a year ago), I enjoy reasonably good health. -- J.E.Y. ANSWER: I hope there is another side to this story, since I am horrified that a physician would make a longstanding patient with cancer and spinal stenosis wait six months for an appointment. That is not appropriate medical care. While I fully understand the point of view of your cancer doctor -- and would be tempted to find another doctor -- it sounds like saving the relationship you had with your PCP might be worth another try. I think speaking directly with your primary care doctor might clear up any misunderstanding.
