TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.
Our mission is to offer you locally grown, reasonably priced varieties of plants acclimated to your surroundings.

Let These Four Words Pull You Through! Recover Newsfeeds tend to focus on negatives. Focus instead on the number of those recovered. Check it out thanks to Johns Hopkins at https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html. That number will one day overtake the others, and on that “Flip Day,” let’s remember to celebrate!
Faith We depend on each other, and these bonds of trust draw us together as a community. Have faith in your friends, family and neighbors and in the incredible compassion of strangers. At the same time, be faithful to reach out to those depending on you. Phone calls, food, check-ins and cheerful words go farther now than ever. Don’t forget: a smile and wave are a safe way to bridge six feet!
Calm Remain calm and clearheaded whether you are managing your portfolio or purchasing groceries. The stock market always recovers, and our country’s supply of vital goods is strong. Panic selling and panic buying are not in the best interests of you or your community.
Support Local businesses need your support more than ever to keep local communities strong. Order takeout from local restaurants, buy goods from local businesses online or purchase gift cards to them and don’t forget to pay your gym membership. There is no better time to put “We local business” into action! Share this message and spread some hope!

Stretching Pet Food While in Quarantine
“Hello, my name is Pudge! I came from a farm, and can you tell why I’m named Pudge from my furry face? I love to eat popcorn when I’m given treats. Every day at 5:10pm when Vince walks in, I stand on my wee little legs, anticipating him to walk by and pet me on my head. My favorite treats are carrots, apples, and romaine lettuce. I started off as a tiny guinea pig, and now I’ve grown into a football-sized piggy. I’m currently 5.5 years old, and Vince hopes I live as long as he does.”
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Because I was possibly exposed to COVID-19 at the grocery store where I work, I have to stay home for 14 days. About three days into my quarantine, I realized that the dog food for my mixed-breed dog “Corky” was running low. I don’t have any family nearby, and I don’t want to make my co-workers nervous by asking them to bring a bag of dog food over. I thought about ordering from that online pet food delivery service, but I think it will take too long. What can I do to tide Corky over? –- Sara J., White Plains, New York

DEAR SARAH: I feel for ya! My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging. Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog. If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative. Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Researchers Working on Cure for Herpes --DEAR DR. ROACH: If a person has been exposed (verified by blood test) to herpes 1 and 2, can that person be a blood donor? Could a person catch herpes by sitting on a toilet seat that has been used by an infected person? Are scientists working on a cure for herpes? -- Anon. ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions. First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth. There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed. Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight. “Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, fortunately, and I, too, have found that cholestyramine can be very effective, in addition to eating smaller, more-frequent meals. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Watch for Details May 15th, 16th, 17th 10am-4pm 3333 Fowlerville Road Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.
When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community. GB19B381 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. DID YOU KNOW? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

315.573.1599 BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You still might have to deal with some lingering confusion that marked a recent workplace situation. But for the most part, you should now be well on your way to your next project. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new commitment might demand more time than you’d expected to have to give it. But rely on that special Bovine gift for patience, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re earning the admiration of a lot of people who like the way you handle yourself when your views are on the line. Even one or two of your detractors are being won over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking your responsibilities seriously is what you do. But ease up on the pressure gauge, and make time for much needed R & R. Start by making this weekend a “just for fun” time zone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some recently uncovered information might make a change of plans inevitable. If so, deal with it as quickly as possible, and then find out what went wrong and why. What you learn might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Aspects favor moving carefully and deliberately when making any significant changes. Could be there are more facts you need to know, which you might overlook if you rush things. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem neighbor might be looking to goad you into an action you don’t want to take. Ask someone you both respect if he or she would act as an impartial arbitrator for both of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent workplace accomplishment hasn’t been overlooked by those who watch these things. Meanwhile, start making travel plans for that much-too-long-deferred trip with someone special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Those money matters continue to move in your favor. Now would be a good time to start putting some money back into the house, both for esthetic as well as economic reasons. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A changing workplace environment can create job pressures. But, once again, follow the example of your birth sign and take things a step at a time, like the sure-footed Goat you are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. You could soon have the funds you need for your worthy project. Your generous gifts of time and effort are well known, and someone might decide it’s time to join with you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your inner scam-catcher is right on target, and you’re absolutely right to reject that “too good to be true” offer. Meanwhile, something positive should be making its way to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are generous, and also sympathetic to people who find they need the help of others. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR 2019 CANANDAIGUA-FARMINGTON WATER DISTRICT MANCHESTER VILLAGE AND TOWN WATER DISTRICTS Introduction We are pleased to present to you this year’s Annual Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. The purpose of this report is to provide information about the quality of water that we provide to you. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. Last year, in the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District, the Town of Manchester and the Village of Manchester your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are committed to ensuring the quality of your water. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your water utility, please contact either: Canandaigua-Farmington: Robin MacDonald, Water Superintendent, (585) 924-3158 Town of Manchester: William Murphy, Water Superintendent, (585) 289-3010 Village of Manchester: Jeff Liberati, Water Superintendent, (585) 289-4340 New York State Department of Health, Geneva District Office, (315) 789-3030
Town of Farmington: The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington Town Hall located at 1000 County Road 8, Farmington, New York. Town of Manchester: The second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Town Hall located at 1272 County Road 7, Clifton Springs, New York. Village of Manchester: The first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Village Hall located at 8 Clifton Street, Manchester, New York. Where Does Our Water Come From? Our water source is surface water source, Canandaigua Lake. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District is supplied from City of Canandaigua. The City of Canandaigua operates a Water Filtration Plant located on West Lake Road in the Town of Canandaigua. After filtration, carbon can also be added for taste and odor control. The water is disinfected by injection of gaseous chlorine, sodium hydroxide is added for pH control to reduce corrosion in the distribution system and then fluoride is added before being pumped to the distribution system. The treated water enters the Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District through meter pits located at the City of Canandaigua line or at the connection point with the City of Canandaigua’s transmission main. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District supplies treated water from the City of Canandaigua to the Village of Manchester and the Town of Manchester Central District. New York State Department of Health has completed a source water assessment for Canandaigua Lake with the following results: This assessment found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for this source of drinking water. The amount of agricultural lands in the assessment area results in elevated potential for protozoa, phosphorus, DBP precursors, and pesticides contamination. While ●

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants • Inorganic contaminants • Pesticides and herbicides • Organic chemical contaminants • Radioactive contaminants
We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled Town Board Meetings. The meetings are held:

there are some facilities present, permitted discharges do not likely represent an important threat to source water quality based on their density in the assessment area. However, it appears that the total amount of wastewater discharged to surface water in this assessment area is high enough to further raise the potential for contamination (particularly for protozoa). There is also noteworthy contamination susceptibility associated with other discrete contaminant sources, and these facility types include: IHWS, CBS, landfills, mines, RCRA, and TRI.
Facts and Figures The Canandaigua-Farmington water system serves over 12,000 people through 4,559 service connections. The total water purchased for the year in 2019 was 653.365 million gallons. The daily average of water treated and pumped into the distribution system was 1.791 million gallons per day. Our highest day was 2.464 million gallons for the year. The amount of water delivered to customers was 574.906 million gallons for the year. 673,300 gallons were distributed through fire hydrant meter rentals. This leaves unaccountable water total of 77.786 million gallons for the year. Approximately 20% of our unaccountable water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, and for fighting fires and fire protection. Approximately 10% of our unaccountable total water was due to water main leakage. This leaves an unaccountable total of 54.450 million gallons, which is 8.33% of the total water purchased for 2019. In 2019, water customers were charged $4.05 per 1,000 gallons for 0 to 6,000 gallons of water used and additional usage over 6,000 gallons is $4.55 per 1,000 gallons or a minimum quarterly bill of $24.30.
The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District sells water to the Town and Village of Manchester. Their System facts and figures are as follows: The Village of Manchester services a population of 1,709 through 501 service connections. The total water purchased in 2019 was 41.609 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 113,997 gallons per day. The single highest day was 232,000 gallons. The amount of water sold to customers was 38.974 million gallons. Approximately 250,000 gallons of water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, fighting fires, etc. Water loss due to water main breaks 375,000. There was one water main break in 2019, on Pratt Road. This leaves an unaccounted total of 2.011 million gallons, which is 4.0% of the total purchased. In 2019, water customers were charged $26.00 for 0 to 5,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 5,000 gallons is $4.50 per thousand. $4.00 water meter rent per quarter.

Manchester Village is required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards. During 2019 we tested 2 times per month for Coliform Bacteria. There were no missed samples and none tested positive. The Town of Manchester Water Districts services a population of 1470 through 574 service connections. The total water purchased in 2019 was 64,081,900 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 198,726 gallons per day. The single highest day was 376,000 gallons in April 2019. The amount of water sold to customers was 48,382,833 gallons. Zero gallons were lost due to water main breaks. Approximately 490,000 gallons of water was used to flush water mains, hydrants and fight fires. In 2019 water customers were charged $42.00 from 0 to 5,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 5,000 gallons is $4.52 per 1,000 gallons. Note: Coliform bacteria are tested for once a month. There was a positive test for Coliform on 10/17/2019 at 3416 Outlet Road.
and synthetic organic contaminants. The table presented below depicts which contaminants were detected in your drinking water. The State allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. Therefore, some of the data, though representative of the water quality, is more than one year old. Test results were all negative except for those indicated on the following table. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District tested the water for coliform bacteria at least ten (10) times a month. The Village of Manchester tested the water for coliform bacteria two times per month. The Manchester Central Water District tested the water for coliform bacteria once per month. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Information on Fluoride Addition Our system is one of the many drinking water systems in New York State that provides drinking water with a controlled, low level of fluoride for consumer dental health protection. Fluoride is added to your drinking water by the City of Canandaigua before it is delivered to the Canandaigua-Farmington water system. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, fluoride is very effective in preventing cavities when present in drinking water at an optimal range from 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L (parts per million). To ensure that the fluoride supplement in your water provides optimal dental protection, the State Department of Health requires that the City of Canandaigua monitor fluoride levels on a daily basis. In 2015 the City of Canandaigua’s average was 0.79 mg/L. None of the monitoring results showed fluoride at levels greater than the 2.2 mg/L MCL for fluoride. Are There Contaminants In Our Drinking Water? In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, we routinely test your drinking water. The New York State Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. These contaminants include: total coliform, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, nitrite, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, and synthetic organic compounds. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Canandaigua-Farmington Water District is required to test for List 1 contaminants, one of which is strontium, under the third round of Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3). This monitoring provides a basis for future regulatory requirements. In accordance with State regulations, the City of Canandaigua routinely monitors your drinking water for numerous contaminants. They test your drinking water for coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic contaminants, lead and copper, nitrate, volatile organic contaminants, total trihalomethanes, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Definitions: Action Level: The concentration of a contaminant that, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow. Maximum Amount Detected: This column represents an average of sample result data collected during the reporting year. In some cases, it may represent a single sample if only one sample was collected. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as possible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. N/A: Not applicable ND: Not detectable at testing limits. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): Measure of the clarity, or turbidity, of water. Parts per Million: One part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (or milligram per liter). Parts per Billion: One part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (or microgram per liter). Ranger (Low – High ): This column represents a range of individual sample results, from lowest to highest, that were collected during the reporting year. Treatment Technique (TT) - A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Picocuries per liter (pCi/l): Picocuries per liter is a measure of radioactivity in water. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectant to control microbial contamination.

Fluoride is added to the water supply to help promote strong teeth. The Department of Public Health recommends an optimal fluoride concentration range of 0.7 ppm to 1.2 ppm. Measured on laboratory’s finished water.
tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using your tap water. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
2
Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of the water, and is monitored as an indicator of the effectiveness of our filtration system. The turbidity rule requires that 95% or more of monthly samples be below 0.3 NTUs. Measured in lab. 3
The level presented represents the 90th percentile. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the lead and copper values detected at your water system. 4
Number of homes out of 30 that were above the action level.
5
Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful bacteria may be present. 7
This level represents the highest locational running annual average calculated from data collected.
MCL’s are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-amillion chance of having the described health effect. Do I Need To Take Special Precautions? Some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Lead. Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your home’s water, you may wish to have your water

Why Save Water and How to Avoid Wasting It? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: • Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it up and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. • Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances, and then check the meter after 15 minutes. If it moved, you have a leak. System Improvements 1. Work began in February 2019 on the Beaver Creek Phase 2 project. 2,375 liner feet of 12” DR-14 waterline running east from State Route 332 crossing County Road 41 at the intersection of Beaver Creek Road then proceeding in a northward direction to south of the Beaver Creek bridge was completed in April 2019. 2. In May 2019 work was completed and approved by the Department of Health for Hickory Rise Section 4. 1,708 liner feet of 8” DR-14 PVC watermain and associated appurtenances were installed. 3. Several projects were completed at the end of June. To connect two dead ends and to provide additional ingress and egress 700 linear feet of 12” DIP water main between Ivory Drive and Carmen Way was installed to close the loop for the Farmington Pointe intersection. 970 linear feet of 8” DIP water main and two fire hydrants were completed on Jasper Drive. 120 linear feet of DIP water main was finished on Ackerman Way. 4. Mid-July saw another project completed; installation of approximately 1,970LF of 8” PVC water main, four fire hydrants, and associated appurtenances to serve Auburn Meadows Section 9. 5. August 7th through August 10th we experienced seven water main breaks. As a result we experienced four days of higher than normal water consumption.

6. This summer the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District replaced 30 old 1972 & 1977 Kennedy K-11 three Bib fire hydrants in Kings Village, Doe Haven and Farmbrook Subdivisions, and on Canandaigua Farmington Town Line Road. Four 1962 K-8 two-bib hydrants were also replaced; two on Hook Road and two on Pannell Road. 7. In October the Plans for Public Water Supply Improvement for Redfield Grove Phase 2 were approved by the DOH (Department of Health). 950 LF of 8î PVC water main with two hydrants will be installed. 8. With regards to improving water pressures within the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District, we are continuing the planning and designing a new elevated water tank to replace the aging water tank located at Brickyard Road in the Town of Canandaigua. The district is also looking to install a new 16-inch water transmission line running from the new water tank to the Canandaigua-Farmington Town Line which will connect to new 12-inch water mains. I would like to thank my neighbors, the Henslers, for making a beautiful mask for me to wear. I appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness. - JM Harris Kudos to the wonderful staff at the Teresa House for keeping the Comfort Home opened during this pandemic. The 2 residents are very fortunate to have such a caring group of Volunteers and Nurses who continue to shower them with love and attention. Thank you for your kindness. It shows in everything you do. Stay safe, stay well, and stay hopeful.
I would like to know why people who are nonessential workers are still going to work and possibly exposing their family members and other people? I understand people must work, but if we do not do our part, we will never get out from under this. Please let us do our part stay home, so I do not lose a family member. Thank you. I do not understand why some people must sit in their apartments and watch the coming and going of their neighbors or take it upon themselves to play parking lot police. I think that there are some people who are not meant for complex living. Just because they are a frustrated, miserably old woman. Please do not take it out on your neighbors. I am sad that our Village DPW does not fill potholes. They are not plowing snow nor working in parks nor tree trimming. The least they could do is fill the potholes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is to the police officers who read the paper. I understand you need to concentrate resources in larger areas like the cities, but on the country roads, people are literally (and I am not exaggerating) going 100 mph down the roads. I was driving going 60 mph and got passed by two people going over 80 mph at least. This happens every day now because they think they will not get caught, and I, for one, am sick of hearing the rev of engines going up and down my road and the main road.

With a son in a group home and other relatives in rehab and senior facilities, we so appreciate those who care for our dear ones, keeping them safe and healthy. We thank those who go above and beyond normal duties to keep our son in a Heritage Christian Home, actively engaged in jobs and artwork to keep him stimulated in an at-home environment, along with photos and reports on his well-being. A million thanks to our direct care pros who are on the front lines like other essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, and transportation as well as to our older son who, among millions, deliver tons of stuff to our homes and businesses.
A big and grateful thank you to the man who was in front of me at the Tim Hortons in Batavia on Lewiston Rd. on April 11th, 2020. He paid for my bill. I was there picking up gift certificates for my family for Easter. Little did he know he not only paid for me but for my family. So altogether you paid for eight grateful people. I know that God will bless you for your kindness, and I cannot say thank you enough. Stay safe and healthy and thank you again.
This needs to be addressed. To all the people ignoring the rules and going out, what are you trying to prove? Good for you; you are risking others catching the virus. People pack into the markets and ignore the six-foot rule as well. I am disgusted that you who still go out to gatherings publicly brag in line for others to hear how ‘cool and defiant’ you are being. I literally heard a woman scoff and say, “Well, I’m not staying home.” Guess what? You and the people like you are the reason we need alerts to our phone telling us to stay in. Thanks for lessening the chances of spreading it. Stay home. As the ad says, “Be apart now so we can be together later.”
Responding to Mind your Business: I agree with your post. It does not matter where some live, whether it be in a condo, or a complex apartment, or in a house. Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. It is truly sad that they do not have a life that they resort to being like they are. They become the town criers as it were. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.
Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES (NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.
I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.
3.
I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.
4.
My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.
Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time. If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit).
DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.
* “I use curbside pickup for my groceries these days. I keep two large laundry baskets in the hatchback of my vehicle. Any bags go in the baskets, so it’s easy to transport them into the house and keep contact to a minimum. When I’m done unloading and wiping down, I can spray out the laundry baskets and let them dry in the sun for next time. Can’t be too careful.” -- T.E. in Virginia * “Stay ahead of the drain: Pour a tea kettle of boiling water down the drain once a month, or if you notice the drain slowing. The hot water can break up material collecting inside the drain. Half a cup of baking soda added to the water will absorb any odors that are building.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California * “I color code my plants by their light needs. The closer the pot color is to red, the more light it needs. For instance, my lavender is in a red pot -full sun. I have a nice potted citronella that likes part sun, so it’s in a lime-colored pot (yellow-green) and my indoor pots are plum. I have a lovely rainbow of plants!” -- Y.S. in Arizona * A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and school supplies for the whole family. Pencils, markers, assignment cards, and even papers. You can give each person a row, or label the pockets. * There’s a lot of decluttering going on across the country right now. Here’s a pro tip: For seasonal items, if you didn’t wear it last season, consider selling or donating. Same applies if it’s a specialty item (skiwear, hiking boots, formalwear) that hasn’t been used for more than two years. Many people keep items that are on the expensive side, even though season after season goes by without the item being used. If you rationalize keeping the scuba suit, plan a scuba trip!
You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you.

Yancey’s Fancy Finds Opportunity for Generosity By Amanda Dudek
E
very year around Mother’s Day, Yancey’s Fancy holds its much anticipated Tent Sale, a huge event held under a very large tent filled with their artisan, gourmet and award-winning cheeses. These delectable delicacies are sold at a hefty discount, $1 a wedge, for example, rather than their $5 or $6 average retail price. This year, due to coronavirus restrictions, Yancey’s Fancy will be not be able to have a tent sale, so they are putting their cheeses to even better use.
Yancey’s Fancy staff crafting its award-winning cheeses! “We have been looking for a better way to utilize the cheeses we usually include in our Tent Sale,” shared Michael Best of Yancey’s Fancy, a New York artisan cheese maker for over 60 years. “This year, the COVID-19 situation has made it impossible to sponsor a large gathering like our annual tent sale. We realized that restrictions on large gatherings are likely to go into the rest of the spring and into early summer and quite possibly, it could go beyond that.” In the face of this loss, Yancey’s Fancy decided to do something they had been wanting to do for years: they decided to donate this enormous amount of cheese to those in need. “We have wanted to get this cheese into the hands of food banks for a while now,” said Best. “We know there are a lot of people out of work and in need right now, so we thought it best to donate what we would have sold at the tent sale to the local food banks and pantries and other charitable organizations that can put the cheese to good and immediate use.” Yancey’s Fancy reached out to FeedMore, an organization which includes food banks in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara Counties and FoodLink. “We saw there was a need and that food banks were starting to ask for donations, so I made a call and asked if we could talk to someone about donating some product,” said Best. “We were referred to FoodLink Rochester. They realized Yancey’s Fancy products include many the amount we had to give, unique and delicious flavors like its and they were more than Steakhouse Onion Aged willing to share with others Cheddar Cheese! like their sister branch in Buffalo.”

Yancey’s Fancy has also been able to help the Meals-on-Wheels program in Alden, which currently serves approximately 80 clients. “Not all Meals-on-Wheels programs are covered under public funding,” explained Best. “The program in Alden is primarily funded through fundraisers. They go and purchase the food themselves. We are hoping they will not have to go Yancey’s Fancy hand dips its and purchase so much of it specialty artisan cheeses! now, resulting in more product on the shelves for others and fewer, shorter trips to the stores for them.” The Alden Meals-on-Wheels program picked up several cases of Yancey’s Fancy cheeses just weeks ago. “They are taking our donated product and cooking with it,” shared Best. “They can turn that product into a lot of meals. They make macaroni and cheese, soups, sandwiches, potato dishes and more. We’re told recipients have been thrilled to receive a premium product.” Yancey’s Fancy isn’t finished giving. FeedMore picked up their first load of donated cheeses last week, and FoodLink picked theirs up this week. These agencies will continue to pick up while there is need. While recognizing that many are already caring for those in need, Yancey’s Fancy hopes to encourage other companies which have product to reach out and give generously. “We know that our product is going to good places,” said Best. “We are grateful for these opportunities to help those in need during this crisis, and we hope others are inspired to do the same.”

In Spring, everything is full of promise.... The child sporting upon the lawn, and the season, sympathize together, and nature rejoices in her virgin loveliness. ~ Charles Lanman, “The Dying Year,” 1840 HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Recycle old equipment. Advancements in technology now occur at a breakneck pace, so the equipment businesses use today may very well be obsolete tomorrow. Businesses that want to be more eco-friendly should recycle rather than discard old equipment. Simply throwing equipment away might even be illegal depending on where an office is located. Some electronics contain mercury, lead or arsenic, hazardous materials that can do significant damage to the environment when not properly disposed of. Some retailers, including the office supply chain Staples, accept old equipment for recycling at their stores at no charge to business owners. If equipment is still functional but somewhat outdated, look into donating it to local organizations in need. EMPLOYMENT

TRY THIS TREAT (NAPSI)—Here’s an exotic twist that transforms everyday cheesecake into something sophisticated, elegant and worthy of your holiday table. Pureed sweet potatoes, five spice powder and candied ginger star in a dessert that’s easy to make and can be enjoyed yearround. The sweet potatoes not only provide luscious texture and flavor, they prevent the cake from cracking—so it’s deliciously decadent and practically foolproof. Give it a try.
Sweet Potato Cheesecake with Gingered Whipped Cream Serves 10 to 12 8 oz gingersnap cookies 4 tbsp butter, melted, plus more for pan 3 8-oz packages cream cheese 1 ¼ c sugar 2 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp Chinese five-spice or pumpkin pie spice blend ¾ tsp salt 3 large eggs 3 c orange-fleshed sweetpotato puree ½ c sour cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 c whipped cream ¼ c chopped candied ginger Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter bottom and sides of 9-in springform pan. In food processor, pulse cookies until finely ground. Add butter and pulse until blended. Transfer to prepared pan and press into bottom. Bake 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Use an electric mixer to combine cream cheese, sugar, ground ginger, spice blend and salt, beating until smooth. Beat in eggs. Add sweet potato puree, sour cream and vanilla, beating just until smooth. Pour mixture into cooled crust. Place springform pan inside larger pan and pour very hot tap water into larger pan, to reach 1 inch up springform pan. Bake until edges are set and center is slightly wobbly, 45 to 50 minutes. Remove springform pan from larger pan and cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Fold candied ginger into whipped cream. Serve cheesecake with gingered whipped cream.
