Homeschooling Tips
Classifieds ____________________30
You may not have signed up to be a homeschooling parent, yet suddenly you find yourself teaching your child—or children—from home. Don’t worry! I believe you can help your child learn. As an experienced homeschooler, I offer you these tips for a successful homeschool experience!
Employment ____________________27 Give & Take ____________________19 Home Services _____________________3 Hometown Events ____________________20
Set your own pace: Your child’s school may have started classes at 8:00am, but 8:30am may work better for your family. That is okay! Design a consistent schedule for your child that works best for your family. Certainly, remaining in the ballpark of their start time will be beneficial when transitioning back, but do not feel restricted by the schedule they had.
Kidz Korner ____________________26 Passages ____________________21
Establish an Order: As trivial as it may seem, set and maintain an order in which your child completes his or her work. If your child completes math before social studies, he or she should do this every day. Not only does this lend consistency to the routine, it also helps you to know exactly what has and has not been accomplished on any given day.
Pet Place ____________________10 Puzzle Answers ____________________29
Ask for Advice: Homeschooling has become a more popular option in recent years, and chances are you know a family who homeschools their children. Reach out to them and ask for tips. They are usually more than happy to share. A popular Facebook group called Homeschoolers of Greater Rochester NY has nearly 3,000 members and is another wonderful resource. National Geographic’s website offers homeschooling tips for families as well as offering resources for educators which parents may also find useful.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse ow! ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.
One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:
• Asphalt paving and resurfacing • New driveway/parking lot construction (585) 624-1520 Fully Insured • Reworking/re-grading stone driveways Free Estimates • Commercial/Residential www.connorspaving.com “ The tree w hich moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the w ay. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself.” - W illiam Blake, 1799, The Letters
1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience.
REMODELING
4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, abdicates the throne and is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. Napoleon is credited with reforms that had a lasting impact on European society, including rights for all men and the end of feudalism.
More smart food choices for seniors · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Easter
It is strange in its very concept. Yet with Easter approaching in just over a week on Sunday, April 12th, it is possible that many of us will not be able to gather to enjoy our usual Easter festivities and traditions. Those who welcome the holiday with an Easter Service may only be able to do so remotely. Families groups may not exceed more than 10, and Easter egg hunts will likely be cancelled. Much like Seuss’s Grinch found of Christmas, however, what beats at the heart of Easter can never be stolen away. Easter is a time for celebrating rebirth. Rabbits, chicks and eggs all speak to its long-standing ties to the earth’s renewal each spring. It is also a deeply religious holiday for many. For Christians, it is a time to rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Son of God and His victory over death. For them, it reaches back to the foreshadowing found in the Jewish Passover, which is also observed around this time each year. During the Passover holiday, which takes place from April 8th-16th this year, those of Jewish faith celebrate their people’s historic and miraculous deliverance from slavery. In each celebration, there exists a common thread, the recognition of something we so badly need, especially in worrying times: hope. Rev. Henry Moore of the Hope Center in LeRoy has said that hope is “a confident expectation that believes tomorrow will be different, and more specifically, better than yesterday.” What an interesting definition and how personal! Recently, ending COVID-19 has been a hope that has united us both nationally and globally. While it is true that some have chosen a path of selfishness, many more have reached out to their neighbors in various ways, particularly through digital platforms, to offer support, supplies and simply to check in on the wellbeing of those around them. Many of us have been jettisoned, willingly or not, from the breakneck speed at which we usually fly through everyday life. With few places to go, more people are getting out into nature locally. You may have experienced seeing some of your neighbors for the first time, from a socially safe distance of six feet or more, of course, while checking out local hiking trails. This greater awareness will surely pull us closer together.
5 IDEAS FOR
Easter at Home Turn your home into a cheerful festival of spring. Encourage children to craft fun and colorful decorations for Easter. Watch their creativity and imaginations soar as they do! Enjoy your Sunday Easter Service remotely. Consider casting it to your living room TV and gathering your family together. Little ones may even want to dress up in their Easter finest. Hold an Easter Egg Hunt in your home. Get everyone in on the action by giving each family member different color eggs to hide and seeing whose eggs take the longest to find. Make favorite Easter dishes with your kids. Often in the rush to get everything made in time for guests, we are too hurried to teach our children cooking basics and importantly the stories of our family food traditions! Create a new family tradition. Traditions often come from significant events experienced together. Perhaps your new addition can reflect a way your family has bonded during this time.
In fact, now perhaps more than ever, it has become clear that our communities will continue to thrive when we cause them to thrive. Our local businesses will prosper when we go the extra mile for them. Our children will be successful students when we provide the extra support they need. In short, many Americans across our great nation are taking action. We are caring for our neighbors. We are buying gift cards and ordering takeout. We are engaging in our children’s education within our homes and are so thanksful for teachers. It’s beautiful to see! While there are still new COVID-19 cases across the United States, we know it is only a matter of time before we succeed in bringing this concern to a close. One of the best things we can do to care for our neighbors is to stay home as much as possible while connecting in other ways. Phone calls, video chats and uplifting social media posts serve as little points of hope, illuminating this dark sky. Some Easter traditions may be put on hold this year, but hope will never be one of them.

NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS
Maggie.
(NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society.
She was a bad girl that day but, was finally forgiven. Even though she warned us there could be a next time, LOL.
Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved. For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025. “Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real takecharge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.( c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

(NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

I would like to express our appreciation for Anthony at Top’s pharmacy in Hamlin and give a shout out to all of those who must continue to work so that others can benefit. Everyone is being profoundly affected due to the pandemic. I’m sure that being a pharmacist is a job that can be overwhelming at this time. Yet, when I was at the pharmacy on Thursday to pick up prescriptions for
To the lady last week (3/20) regarding her son finding basketball cards: I would be glad to give him some basketball cards from my own collection. I would rather see kids involved in a hobby like card collecting instead of having their face stuck in a video game or out causing trouble. We need to encourage kids to get involved in hobbies. Contact the GVPS for more information. Beware of young men that are asking for money to help them out. They have a lot of sad stories! They frequent the grocery stores, streets and restaurants. my family, Anthony was as cordial as always. He was busy but still engaging. In these horrific times, it’s nice to still see others have a smile on their face. As a customer, I appreciated that. So, once again, thank you for still providing our needs when it comes to filling our prescriptions. To everyone, continue to stay well. Once again, thank you for a job well done. Follow the examples of our modern-day heroes. For those who are just ugly from the inside out, perhaps they should spend a little time in a hospital and see what our wonderful physicians and nurses are going through. three. Police know them to be druggies. They prey on the elderly. We are helping a 92-year-old neighbor, and they have gotten thousands of dollars from him. Police cannot arrest them because he is giving it to them as a gift. He has dementia, and they tell him they have done work for him. New York State law prevents them from arresting panhandlers (beggars in the street.) If you see someone in true need, buy them food or clothing. Never give them cash! Maybe then they would be able to be nice to others around them. Maybe not.... Stop being so abrasive and obnoxious. You end up only hurting yourself and pushing away others around you. A big shout out to all the dedicated men and women, who are extending themselves for perfect strangers. What a lesson of what kindness is all about! A big thank you to those in the medical field. You are all truly heroes! With all the chaos and uncertainty in the world concerning the corona virus, each one of you are on the front battle lines. You are all truly dedicated people, who, at the risk of your own lives, unselfishly forge by using disposable gloves and plastic newspaper tubes or other plastic bags to pick up and carry out what other careless folks have left behind. You can put your hand inside the bag, pick up other people’s trash without touching it, then turn it inside out and take it to the nearest garbage receptacle and dispose of it. I have done it many times. I make sure I have a bag with me when I go to the woods because I can’t stand

forward to help others in the face of adversity. That certainly takes a special person. It speaks volumes about your character. As I sit in my home, snacking and channel surfing, the nurses, doctors, etc., are pulling long shifts without letting up. You leave your family, children, spouses to serve the needs of the community. How many of us would be able to do that? My heartfelt appreciation to you all. Stay safe.
looking at what people leave behind. In a time where so many are coming together and helping, being true hero’s, it is sad how some individuals can still be so ugly. Yes, that’s a strong word, but sadly true. Some people wouldn’t say hi or wave if their lives depended on it. They go out of their way to be the same disgruntled people they have always been. I don’t know how they can stand themselves! It could explain why they don’t have many, if any, friends. My mother and father always showed interest and genuine kindness in others. I was taught to treat others the way you would want to be treated. I would like to pass that advice to the above mentioned. If you were a nice person, perhaps you wouldn’t have such difficulty sleeping! At least I can sleep at night.

What Are the Benefits of Medical ID Tags? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about medical bracelets and necklaces. I’ve never seen any recommendations as to what conditions would warrant wearing one nor what the inscription should say. When are they either necessary or beneficial? -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Medical ID tags can be useful. They serve to alert medical personnel of potentially important medical conditions when someone is not capable of providing that information, whether due to temporary incapacity (such as being unconscious in a motor vehicle accident) or permanent disability (such as intellectual disability). In my opinion, the most appropriate use of these tags is when there is a potentially life-threatening medical condition that would not be obvious to emergency medical personnel. Some examples of these would include anaphylactic reaction to medications or latex; the presence of an illness that can cause temporary disability (epilepsy, diabetes, Addison’s disease); and medical conditions that might affect use of some common treatments, such as bleeding disorders, organ transplant status and medical implants (such as implantable defibrillators). Personal and contact information is a natural set of complementary information to have on a medical tag. Some newer tags include electronic information, but this is in its infancy. These include the use of near-field technology to let emergency personnel read the information (if they also have the technology); phone numbers the emergency personnel can call to get more information; and QR codes to allow emergency personnel with a smartphone to go to a webpage with more detailed information. Most smartphones also have the ability to store information that can be read in an emergency, even by someone without the person’s phone password. I recommend taking advantage of this feature. Many of the ID tags I see have information that is not likely to be helpful. Listing chronic conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol is not necessary. Finally, one of the biggest benefits of a medical ID tag is a little peace of mind.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Regarding a recent column: If a body does not need help in maintaining pH balance, why does the consumption of different foods cause changes in urine pH? -- K.F. ANSWER: The body has two main organs with which to regulate pH, the acid/base status of the body based on food intake, exercise, medications and other causes that would perturb the body’s pH, which is very tightly regulated and slightly alkaline at about 7.4. The more important and faster-acting is the lung. By increasing the respiratory rate, we excrete more carbon dioxide, which is in equilibrium with carbonic acid. Breathing more deeply and quickly can move the blood pH toward the alkaline side. This usually happens without our being aware of it. The kidneys are the other important organ for long-term regulation of pH. The kidneys can regulate reabsorption of carbonic acid in the tubule, increasing or reducing acid secretion. So, urine that is more acidic than normal may mean the body is ridding itself of excess dietary acid and thus making blood pH more alkaline. Ammonia is another way the kidney can regulate pH balance. Blood pH does not vary more than a minute amount from its expected level except in cases of critical illness, disturbances in kidney function or diseases that affect control of breathing.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
