Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Barbecue Beef Brisket (Family Features) Makes: 8-10 servings

Build a charcoal fire with charcoal for indirect cooking by situating coals on only one side of grill, leaving other side void.

Cover entire brisket with beef bouillon base. In small bowl, mix dry rub ingredients and coat brisket with rub. When cooker reaches 225°F, place brisket on void side of grill and close lid. Cook for 4 hours, until internal temperature reaches 160-170°F.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot.

Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS

Crabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy, is the key to preventing crabgrass from becoming an unsightly blemish that can harm your lawn in summer.

“People in suburbia see trees differently than foresters do. They cherish every one. It is useless to speak of the probability that a certain tree will die when the tree is in someone’s backyard .... You are talking about a personal asset, a friend, a monument, not about board feet of lumber.”

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Zoom in and crop subjects. Smaller pictures can be just as compelling as larger ones. Zoom in on the bark on a tree, the skin of a lizard or the wings of an insect. Closer looks at what is hiding in plain sight in nature can lead to compelling pictures. Zoom in and think about a macro lens, which will magnify even the tiniest details.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Slower Heart Rates Are More Common in Athletes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about a resting heart rate, specifically when it is considered too slow for one’s health. I am a 67-year-old male who, from an early age to the present time, has always been physically active every day. Now retired, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I work out. The endorphin boosts and benefits to my body are my daily rewards. Recently, I received a fitness watch that tracks my heart rate. My nightly sleep sessions show a range of 39-58 bpm over the past month. During a dental visit a while ago, I was told by the hygienist that she knew of an athlete who died in his sleep, and his heart rate was so slow that it just stopped. Is this possible? -- D.M.

ANSWER: This really wasn’t a great thing for the hygienist to say, as there is very little truth to it. Most people who exercise do have a slower heart rate, and it’s a good sign of a healthy heart. However, some older people can develop heart block when the electrical impulse from the natural pacemaker of the heart fails to pass to the ventricles. This is an occasional cause of sudden cardiac death.

Your heart rate suggests, to me, that it’s more likely the healthy heart rate of an athlete than it is a disease of the electrical conduction system, but a visit with your regular doctor or cardiologist can separate this through a simple electrocardiogram in most cases. Some people just have slow heart rates, but they can be treated with a pacemaker if they’re symptomatic.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

PAW’S CORNER

Bringing an old dog to heel

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er my aunt passed away, I gladly agreed to take in her dog, “Hunter,” a rather squat, obese Beagle. He’s a happy old dog of about 9 years, but my aunt gave him little to no training other than housetraining. at makes walking him -- something the vet recommended I do twice a day, in addition to a diet -- a chore. Hunter will walk a few steps, then sit down and refuse to budge. When he does feel like walking, he either tugs the leash forward or lags behind. How can I correct this? -- James T., Plano, Texas

DEAR JAMES: Hunter is not used to the new lifestyle yet, and he’s reacting in a predictable way. He’s also out of shape and probably more stressed than you think. e first thing I prescribe is patience. e second thing I’d prescribe is persistence.

Simply Perfect WEDDING INVITATIONS

Created just for your big day, we've put together sets of stunning wedding invitations to perfectly match your style.

www.printingbypennylane.com

You’ll want to gradually lengthen his walks. Each day, always at the same time, put Hunter on his leash and start the walk. As soon as Hunter begins to lag or tug forward, stop walking, adjust the distance so that he’s standing or sitting next to you, and start again, saying, “Heel” as you step forward.

When he sits and won’t budge, encourage him to go a few more steps by giving him a very small treat. en turn around and go home. On your next walk, repeat this encouragement, going just a little farther. See what I’m getting at? Make each walk just a tiny bit farther.

As Hunter loses weight, learns to trust you and gains confidence on the leash, he will eventually pull you along. Time, patience and consistency will do the trick.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Look for EV-friendly lodging: Manyhotelsnowfeaturechargingstationsexclusivelyfor guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be chargedovernightwhileguestsareasleep, leavingmoretimetotravelinavehiclethat’s fully charged each morning.

DRIVING CONDITIONS

Make sure the windshield is clean. Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re head-on into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility.

Wegmans angel on March 30

[Local Town] PD Coverage

Thank you so much to the woman who stopped me and blessed me with gift cards at Wegmans. I have been through a rough time lately and this helped me get my medicine and a salad for lunch. You said it was “Just dollar amount” but to me that was more than I needed and then some. Please know I will pay it forward when I’m back on my feet! (Literally and figuratively.)

I understand there is a shortage in workforce. However, [local PD] is a 24/7 agency. At a time when public safety matters the most, [local PD] needs to uphold their 24/7 coverage. If necessary, this means [Chief] and [Sergeant] should be forced to cover any shifts that are lacking coverage regardless of the day, night or holiday since [local PD] is a 24/7 agency.

“BEE” Thoughtful

A man with a mission

Every day along Rt 21 or 5&20 near Canandaigua you will likely see a gray pickup truck stopped with orange cones for safety near it. You will see an individual picking up debris and garbage along the roadside. He is not on the payroll. He is a dedicated volunteer who begins his day early and ends his day late. I live on the same street as Malcolm and see him leave in the morning, come home for lunch and return to his mission until late afternoon. So when you see him along the roadside, give a quick two honks on the horn to let him know how much you appreciate his dedication to keeping things clean on our roadways.

As most of us have heard, pollinators are in a steep decline. As one thing you can do to combat this, many reputable garden centers are selling a variety of Mason Bee houses for your yard. Have you read what bee experts say about these houses? Do your research before installing one. Mason Bees are solitary. These bee houses offer a location where eggs are laid and hatch in the equivalent of a cramped tenement. Experts describe them as an environment where diseases run rampant, and they provide an easy target for predators of bees. It’s shocking that garden centers are promoting this trend. Please, before you add one to your garden, research what entomologists say about these houses.

A Look Into the Cosmos:

THE 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

Mark your calendars! Western New York is in the path of totality for a once in a generation event! Between 2:07 PM and 4:33 PM on Monday, April 8th, get ready to witness a celestial spectacle unlike any other: the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. is will be our first total eclipse here since 1925, and we won’t have another until 2144. Look at it this way: “If a kid is born on eclipse day 2024, their grandkid’s grandkid will be able to see it,” says Dan Schneiderman, Eclipse Coordinator at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC). Since 2022, Dan’s sole focus has been meticulous planning and preparation for this this once in a lifetime event—that’s how big this is!

With totality promising an unforgettable experience, visitors from far and wide will converge on Western New York. From Jamestown to Buffalo, Rochester to Waterloo, and even all the way to the Adirondacks, for local residents, your backyard itself offers a prime viewing spot, though the longest duration of the eclipse will occur at SUNY Brockport.

“Eclipses are extremely predictable,” Dan says as excitement for the event grows. “ ey follow very similar paths, and there’s one in Rochester every 100-120 years. ere was even a 1925 article in the Democrat & Chronicle mentioning the 2024 solar eclipse.”

With the moon beginning to cover the eclipse around 2:07 PM, Dan warns that eclipse viewing glasses are incredibly important if people wish to look up at the sun outside the window of totality. During totality, viewers can look directly up at the sun to find it completely obscured by the moon.

“It will last for three-and-a-half minutes total,” he says, and you can remove your glasses for this brief window, but be forewarned that when the sun comes back from behind the moon, “it is an icepick of light.”

Totality is not the only kind of eclipse out there—we had an annular eclipse as recently as October 14, 2023! Annular eclipses mean the moon is in front of the sun, but because it is farther from the Earth it appears smaller and cannot block it out entirely, so viewers see sun rings around the moon.

During this year’s total eclipse, the weather should be on the milder side. Dan highlights that totality will be a very visual and physical experience: “ e temperature will drop ten degrees, and it will be dark, like a deep dusk and not quite midnight. It will be like a 360º sunset on the horizon.”

During the eclipse, you will also be able to see Jupiter and Venus along with stars (which are always out, just not visible during the day because of the sun’s brightness), with Orion’s Belt being most notable.

With such a huge marvel on the horizon, there is no shortage of events planned in the area, from every local museum having an event/festival, a 5k, a themed euchre event, and Total Eclipse of the Park in Rochester, there are tons of ways to celebrate and something for every interest!

If you plan on staying home with family as opposed to going out, Dan suggests “really lean[ing] into the puns and have themed snacks: Sunny D., moon cookies, moon pies, Milky Way Bars… Have fun with it.” To go along with eclipse glasses, make your own pinhole viewers with cardboard boxes, or dig around in the kitchen for a strainer or slotted spoon for your own DIY version! (You can look at the ground and check the reflection in whatever tool you choose.)

“Plan ahead; be with your loved ones, because you will always remember who you were with,” Dan says. However you choose to observe the eclipse, it will be one of the biggest positive shared experiences you’ll have in this lifetime.

As the world collectively gazes upward, embracing the wonder of the cosmos, the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse promises to be an unforgettable glimpse into the depths of our universe.

Looking for something to do in our area? Check out some of these local events in the Western New York region! For more events in your area, check out rochestereclipse2024.org.

Per RMSC:

2:07 PM: Eclipse begins as Moon will begin to cover the Sun

3:20 PM: Totality Begins. Duration depends on where you’re in the path of totality

4:33 PM: Eclipse ends for Rochester viewers

* Oranges are wonderful treats and full of delicious fiber and vitamin C. Save your peels and stash them in a net bag hanging from your rearview mirror for just a day or two. As they dry, they give off the best smell.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago.Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET FLOORS: Simply vacuuming or sweeping the floors might not be enough to banish some of winter’s most uninvited guests. Dust has a way of settling into a home over the course of a typical winter, and it’s easy for a home’s inhabitants to track dirt and debris inside as well. After vacuuming or sweeping floors, go over them with a mop. Doing so can remove any lingering dust, dirt, debris, and allergens the vacuum or broom failed to pick up. Apply wood cleaner and polish to wood floors to make them look even cleaner.
