PALM SUNDAY On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING CARPET

ELECTRICAL

Padding can impact the way carpeting feels and how long it lasts. It isn’t always necessary to purchase the most expensive or thickest padding. However, it is wise to pick a pad that matches the type of carpeting you’re selecting and one that aligns with how you plan to use the room. You may be able to go with a thinner pad in low-traffic rooms and beneath dense carpeting like berber. In high-traffic rooms, choose a thicker, more durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from coming apart over time. It pays to invest in a padding that will last as well.

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? Home inspections may uncover electrical problems. Some homeowners may discover potential trouble while making renovations that require opening up walls or tearing them down, exposing the wires. Still other homeowners learn about electrical systems when they’re adding new, large appliances or other gadgets that consume more power than existing items. These devices may continually cause power outages in the house, such as tripping the circuit breaker or popping a fuse. Page 6

Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.

4 Season Contracts available. Spring Cleanup, Tree Trimming and Removal

When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

LAWN MOWING By the trip or Seasonal contracts

Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

it all began

in November of 1985… when the Grzenda Christmas Tree Farm was established. The following spring, we planted our first trees (4,000 of them}, and several of those continue to grow on the farm. Since then, we have planted approximately 50,000 more trees and have enjoyed thousands of wonderful customers. Livonia and the surrounding communities have multiplied our success beyond our dreams. God has truly blessed our farm and you have been a blessing to our business. Now after 37 years, we have chosen to retire and move our business to our loyal farm manager, Pat DePuy. Pat will bring fresh ideas and new energy to this Christmas tree business. Most assuredly, Pat will continue producing a superior product with outstanding customer service. Retirement will not have us saying goodbye to you. Surely, we will see you around the community and on the farm.

for 37 wonderful years.

POLL DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Breaking News Alert! Turn Off the Television I learned a lesson this week when I discovered I’d spent over 10 hours glued to the news on television. Afterward, I was depressed and full of anxiety. I knew that couldn’t be good for me. It makes sense that a gym chain turned off the TVs in their locations in 27 states, believing that cable news wasn’t good for a healthy lifestyle. And this was several years ago, when the news was comparatively milder than it is now. Consider how much different our lives -- and the news -- are today, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid an overdose of what’s going on in the world. My newest tactic is to use a timer. At the top of the hour, I’ll turn on a cable news channel, watch for several minutes ... and then turn it off. Whatever is new will be talked about then, but it’s often a repeat of the top of the previous hour. What do we do instead once we turn off the news? Change to a different channel, perhaps one that shows re-runs from a previous era. The “Andy Griffith Show” comes to mind. So do “My Three Sons,” “I Love Lucy” and “Columbo.” Then there’s premium fare like The History Channel, Smithsonian Channel and even best of British TV channels. Or we can turn the television off altogether and, now that spring is here, go outside and walk. Or start a new garden. Or talk to neighbors who are also escaping the television. There are specific health reasons to get away from the television news, and sitting too long is at the top of the list. It leads to memory decline, anxiety, stress ... which leads to insomnia and changes in diet. We think we need to keep up with current events ... but at what cost? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Gospel Corner Finding Good Out of Bad A man told me – “We were away for 6 weeks, returning home to find the house burglarized. We took inventory and found items worth a total of $1,800. Some were sentimental items, not worth much at the pawn shop. The age-old question came up, why do bad things happen to good people? The insurance company paid in full. If we would have sold them at our garage sale, we could have gotten $100 for them. I jokingly told my wife that we should arrange another break-in for next year!” Whatseemed to be a really bad situation had turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It’s said some clouds have silver linings. The BIBLE says, “All things work together for good to them that love GOD.” A real good perk, yes?

Spring Tire M aintenance Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls. Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y. Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road. AUTOMOTIVE

Avoid Predatory Loans From Some Pet Stores

NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS (NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society. Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

The perfect fit for your dog!

Stress Free Kennel!

Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters. It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved. For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.

Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.

Jeff & Dawn Gerstner, Owners

“Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES

“With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finally within reach,” Castle said.

Pick up food bowls and water several hours before bedtime. This can prevent accidents by ensuring dogs’ stomachs and bladders are not full overnight.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out high-interest loans to buy a new pet. So many pets are in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Don’t buy from a puppy mill! -Janie F., Sarasota, Florida DEAR JANIE: Thank you for sounding the alarm! A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Find the article here: https://tinyurl. com/26b8mdcz/ Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. Often, puppy mill dogs arrive at the store in poor condition, and new owners who’ve just paid thousands of dollars to buy a dog now have to shell out thousands more for medical care. The message here is clear: Don’t take out a high-interest loan to buy a pet. If you spend time researching the perfect dog for your family, then you should also spend time studying the financial aspects of dog ownership. Do business with reputable breeders -- you should be able to visit the breeder and see the conditions your prospective pet lives in, meet the puppies and their mother, and discuss their care. Good breeders care about their dogs’ welfare. If you’re going to pay thousands of dollars for a pet, choose this route. Shelter pets are another option. If you aren’t breed-specific but want a wonderful companion, contact the local shelter. Adoption fees are a few hundred dollars, but that is significantly less than what puppy mills are charging. And you’ll get a healthy dog that’s ready for a new family. It’s a win-win. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Her Lack of Perspiration Has Reader in a Sweat ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an elderly woman who has never perspired and would like to know why. Heat makes me very sick. I love the outdoors, but can be out only a short while in the warmer weather. No one seems to have an answer for me. -- P.M. ANSWER: The name for the condition of no sweating at all is anhidrosis, and there are several causes. There are rare conditions people are born with. These are a possibility, since you have never perspired. However, nearly all of these rare diseases have other significant symptoms you don’t mention. Damage to sweat glands can be seen in autoimmune diseases and diseases that can destroy sweat glands. None of these is likely, as they too have additional symptoms you would have identified during your life. Likewise, you don’t mention medications, which may have lack of sweating as a side effect. I suspect you don’t have a diagnosable disease but rather that you are on the far end of the normal range for sweating (this would be called hypohidrosis). Just as there are people who get drenched with sweat in mildly warm weather, there are some who sweat very little. Since sweating is a major way of keeping cool, you are at higher risk for heat injury, including heatstroke. Avoiding hot weather, as it sounds like you’ve done, is wise. Sun protection (e.g., wearing a wide-brimmed hat) is also wise, as is making sure you have enough fluids. Avoiding excess heat becomes even more important as you get older, since an older person has less ability to adapt to heat than a younger person.

2

Moose are powerful swimmers.

A moose can dive 20 feet under water and stay under water for up to 30 seconds! They can also swim fairly fast considering their size: up to six miles an hour. Moose hair 3 is hollow, which helps them stay afloat while swimming or while eating. It also helps to keep moose warm in the winter.

Mount Morris CTE Student Hopes to Make People Feel Beautiful BY M AGG I E F I T ZG I B B O N

A

t 18 years-old, Alyvia Frazer knows what she wants to do with her life. Her goal after graduation is to become a licensed cosmetologist. This Warsaw Central Schools senior is currently enrolled in the Cosmetology Program at the Mount Morris Career and Technical Education Center. By the spring of this year, she will have completed 1,000 hours needed to be eligible to take the New York State Licensing exam. Once Alyvia passes this exam, she will be officially licensed and ready to put her scissors to work. Recently, Alyvia was awarded the Professional Beauty Association Rosy Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes students who show their dedication to bettering the lives of others. According to Yvette Seils, Alyvia’s Cosmetology Instructor, she does just that. “Alyvia is one of those students who has the drive to accomplish anything. She attends extra educational events and participates in SkillsUSA competitions. Alyvia is very well respected amongst her peers,” Seils said. Alyvia chose to enroll in the Cosmetology Program at the Mount Morris CTE Center after she toured the center when she was a 10th grader. She knew the Cosmetology Program was for her. “I love the idea that I can change a person’s mindset and make them feel good about themselves by doing their hair and makeup. That is the reason that I chose this program and to become a cosmetologist,” Alyvia said. Alyvia considers herself to be someone who is attentive to others, which is another reason why she wants to work as a hairstylist. “I really enjoy talking with people and I listen closely to learn how they want their hair styled. Cosmetologists get to meet, listen to, talk with and work with so many different people which is why I will never get bored with my work,” she added. “I once heard cosmetologists described as ‘hairapists’ because people often tell them their problems or concerns.” Seils reiterated how Alyvia focuses on the needs of her customers. “Alyvia pays close attention to detail and is always professional in her appearance. Alyvia thinks before she speaks and communicates very clearly with her clients.”

After she graduates from high school and when she receives her cosmetology license, Alyvia plans to work in a salon. This scholarship will help her purchase items necessary to equip her to start working. Still, her main goal is to always enjoy her work.

“There’s always something to learn in this field such as new techniques and even using new tools, but the

biggest thing is that I will get to meet so many new people. That’s why I know that I will never get bored. I plan to use the scholarship money to buy shears, capes, and anything else I will need to work in a salon,” Alyvia said. As someone who has worked in salons before becoming a cosmetology instructor, Seils agrees that Alyvia will never get bored. She has great hopes for Alyvia. “I see her opening her own salon and having a very successful business. I feel that, eventually, she will circle back and become a teacher.” Alyvia is active in activities and clubs at the Mount Morris CTE Center and at Warsaw Central Schools. Alyvia is a fivesport athlete; she has participated in track, cross country, volleyball, softball and cheerleading at both the JV and Varsity levels. Seils described Alyvia as having a great work ethic. “Honestly, she is a model student and a pleasure to have in class. She is just a great person.”

Thank you! We would like to thank Dr. Fischer & staff at Perry Pet in Livonia for their kindness & compassion when we took our beloved Tali in during an emergency visit last week. Although their schedule was full, Dr. Fischer took time to answer all our questions & offer all of our options for treatment. Although the outcome was not what we had hoped for, we will be forever grateful for their caring. We are so fortunate to have this facility in our area. Joan & Jim Briggs

Shopping fear Recently I was at local [store] In line behind a couple that stole items under their coats in shopping cart, even had a small duffle bag on bottom rack full of who knows what?? I watched the cashier as she made a choice to keep quiet about it, and then realized that I was alone shopping and I should keep quiet as well, out of fear. I think Covid gave us all a heavy dose of fear that will linger for a good long time. Shame on us to be driven to silence out of fear. Woke bullies, dishonest people, are all whining, self absorbed pitiful creatures. Why do they feel so entitled? Maybe because of silent little mice like you and me, just working hard, minding our own business while the spoiled brats take over our world. I don’t want to die over a stolen bag of donuts, but I’d like to be proud of my own reflection in the mirror. Fear sucks

Pick up the poo! If you have a dog and are going to take that dog out for a walk, please bring your doggy poop bags! I saw a woman allow her dog to poop on my front lawn. Then, she walked away without picking it up. How irresponsible! Now, I have to clean up her dog's poop or risk stepping in it. Please pick up after your pets!

Happy Lights! Thank you to the people on the corner in Mumford with the rainbow lights. It makes me happy to drive through town. It's a refreshing change from the daily negativity. Thanks for supporting everyone!

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

NEW YORK STATE DOT IS HIRING

Highway Maintenance Workers

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

* A garden manicure is what my mother calls it: When working with plants and dirt, rake your nails across a bar of soap. The soap prevents dirt particles from lodging under nails, and the soap washes away easily when you are finished. Happy Gardening! -- JoAnn * “If you have a spade with a long handle, you can transfer common measurements to the handle. Just lay a tape measure alongside the handle, and use a black marker to note common spacing, like feet and inches. Then, when you put in plants, you can check quickly whether they are spaced correctly. Very handy!” -- P.E. in Arkansas * “Garden tool storage doesn’t have to be hard. Fill a wide mouth bucket with clean sand. Add a half quart or motor oil and stir. Then use the sand to clean and store your garden tools like shovels, rakes or hoes. The sand/oil mixture helps clean the metal surfaces, and the heaviness of the container lets you stick them in the sand without fear of everything falling down, like it would if you leaned them along a wall.” -- E. in North Carolina * Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nice-size flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water. The birds will thank you -- maybe even by eating some nuisance bugs along with the seed. * If the string on your trimmer is always breaking or jamming, try this old trick: Give the coiled string a spray with vegetable oil before you thread it. It lubricates the line, making it less likely to pull and less likely to break.

DID YOU KNOW?

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
