MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

While you’re busy farming…

~Robert Brault, rbrault.blogspot.com

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS

Driveways, Water Lines, Sewers, Grading, Road Construction, Land Clearing, Brush Hogging, Ponds Dug

Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own.

You need it dug, we can do it!

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

Currently, with all the problems that we have, it is good to know that there are good people out there willing to do good. We read or hear about scammers and other people who take advantage of others. Fortunately, they are the minority, even though it does not seem that way. This country is full of good people who are willing to step up and do whatever needs to be done to help their neighbors.

Regarding Painted Rocks. Let me vote for “Tacky”. My neighbor has them, and I get to see them daily. The public park is not the place for them. Keep them in your yard. Not everyone finds them beautiful. A rock in its natural state in a natural setting has a beauty all its own. A pink painted rock, not so much! We found them in the Facebook Marketplace and thought that one of their signs would make the perfect gift for a friend. From the moment we contacted them, they were wonderful to work with making the experience easy and enjoyable. We loved that we could order a handcrafted in the USA sign locally and have it completed in a week at a reasonable price. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

99 West Main St., Avon, NY Across from the Avon Trading Post Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Planting Trees in Recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day You can still celebrate these events! By Marci Muller, Horticulture Team Leader with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County

O

n Wednesday April 22, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Due to the coronavirus, this major landmark was celebrated online. The man credited with starting Earth Day was Gaylord Nelson, former Governor and Senator from Wisconsin. At that time, there were virtually no laws protecting the environment, and no Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The first Earth Day, March 22, 1970, was originally planned by Mr. Nelson to be a nationwide Environmental Teach-in to help make people aware of what was happening to the environment. Estimates of participation for the first Earth Day put the numbers at 20 million students and adults. It involved public protests across the United States in support of the need for environmental protections and awareness. From there, the movement gained support around the world year-after-year. Bipartisan congressional support followed with the passage of many legislative acts including the creation of the EPA, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. The goal of Earth Day remains to bring attention to environmental concerns both locally and world-wide. Over the years, in addition to world-wide advocacy for the environment, many school children have brought home tree seedlings to be planted in honor of Earth Day.

spread)? Once you have that information you need to decide on which tree you’d like to plant. Next consider what you want from the tree. Are you looking for shade or a smaller tree with beautiful flowers? Do you want to attract birds? There are many reasons to plant a tree, and some trees fit into more than one category. Listed below are several suggestions of some native trees, both large and small, and some ornamental trees that do well in our area as well. There are plenty of other trees to choose from. A visit to your local nursery can provide you with plenty of Sugar maple in fall color. suggestions. Try to purchase a tree that, if not grown nearby, was grown in an area with similar weather conditions to our part of the country. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County has the Gardener’s Helpline, staffed by Master Gardeners. They are available to answer any questions you might have. The Helpline can be reached at 585-753-2555 or monroemg@cornell.edu . CCE Monroe also has a Diagnostic Clinic for processing soil samples and for pest diagnosis – insects, diseases and weeds. The Clinic can be reached at 585-753-2553 or eab11@cornell.edu Please visit our website monroe.cce.cornell.edu for more information. As we all learn to function under COVID-19 regulations, CCE-Monroe encourages you to get outside and consider growing something new this year. It’s a perfect salve for anxious times. Stay healthy.

Redbud in spring flower. This year, in the same week, we celebrated Arbor Day on Friday March 24. Arbor Day’s history stretches back to 1872 when J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper editor, suggested that Nebraskans should plant trees to remind them of their homes back east and to stabilize the soil from wind erosion. That first year 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska. Following the success of the first year, the state of Nebraska created a state holiday in 1874 with parades and tree planting by schoolchildren. By 1882, Arbor Day had become a tradition in schools across the country. Today National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April, but many states use alternative dates that reflect the best tree planting time for their area. Regardless of the date, the emphasis is on planting and appreciating trees for all the good they bring to the world. Trees do incredible things for the environment and for us. First, we all know that trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and give off oxygen in exchange. In addition, trees help cool the atmosphere through transpiration and shading. Trees absorb pollutants from the air, provide habitat for some birds, food for other birds and animals and provide timber and other wood products for us. Those are just a few of the benefits we receive from trees. Even though the celebrations for Earth Day and Arbor Day 2020 have passed, there is still time to honor both. Why not plant a tree this spring, and, possibly, a tree native to upstate New York? Before doing this though, please make sure to consider both the choice and placement of the tree. The first consideration is the siting of the tree. What is the exposure (is it windy or protected), what is the soil like (is it well-drained or does it get soggy at certain times of the year, what is the pH and texture of the soil), how much room is there for the tree to grow (both height and

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Common Warning Signs Of Arthritis Arthritis has name recognition, even among people who are not suffering from it. But despite that recognition, arthritis is not as well understood as one might think. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis is not a single disease, but rather an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. In fact, the term “arthritis” is so wide-ranging that it actually refers to more than 100 types of conditions. Despite that complexity, arthritis often produces four important warning signs, regardless of which type of arthritis a person may have. 1. Pain The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis-related pain may be constant or intermittent. One common misconception about arthritis pain is that it only occurs during or shortly after a body is at rest. However, arthritis-related pain can occur while the body is at rest and is not always triggered by an activity that incorporates a part of the body affected by arthritis. In addition, pain from arthritis can be isolated to one area of the body or affect various parts of the body. 2. Swelling Skin over the joints affected by arthritis may become red and swollen. This skin also may feel warm to the touch. The Arthritis Foundation advises anyone who experiences this swelling for three days or longer or more than three times per month to contact a physician. 3. Stiffness This warning sign is, along with pain, the one that is most often associated with arthritis, even by people who don’t suffer from the condition. Stiffness when waking up in the morning or after long periods of being sedentary, such as sitting at a desk during the workday or taking a long car ride, can be symptomatic of arthritis, especially if the stiffness lasts an hour or longer. 4. Difficulty Moving A Joint The Arthritis Foundation notes that people should not experience difficulty moving, such as when getting out of bed. People who experience such difficulty may have arthritis. People who recognize any of these warning signs should report them to their physicians immediately. Be as specific as possible when describing these symptoms, as specificity can help physicians design the most effective course of treatment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Pain Off-the-Charts --DEAR DR. ROACH: Why is pain measured by numbers? I have severe pain, and doctors do not know what to do when I say it is an 11 on a scale of 1-10. My pain can’t be measured by numbers. It depends on the time of day, what I have done during the day and the weather. I have arthritis in most of my joints, specifically my spine and hips. Having had five spine surgeries, epidurals and hip shots, I have pain every day. There is not much more that can be done but to take opioids. It can be hard to make the decision either to take an opioid and go out shopping or for coffee feeling like I am in a vacuum, or to go out in pain. There is no chronic pain support group in my area, and no one can understand how I feel, even the professionals, unless they have gone through it. So when asked how I am, I say “fine.” Other people don’t want to hear about my pain. Why is there not another way the doctor can measure your pain? I have given up everything I love to do in life because of pain. There’s no way to get “better” from pain. -- M.L.D. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear your story, as it is similar to those I have heard before from people with chronic pain due to many different causes. It is disappointing for me to hear that you haven’t found a pain specialist in your area who seems to care about helping you. Although the 1-10 pain scale is thoroughly entrenched, it has its flaws. The biggest one is that what one person might consider a two, another person might consider a nine. I’ve seen people with horrifying injuries gritting their teeth and saying their pain is a 3 while other people claim their pain from what seems to be a minor condition is a 10 (I had one person tell me the pain from getting his blood pressure taken was a 10). Because pain is subjective, there is no way of standardizing what a person means with their pain rating. However, a 10 on a scale of 1-10 is supposed to be the worst pain imaginable. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father, 90, has neuropathy in his feet and legs, and it is very painful. He recently talked to a clinic that is offering stem cell treatment to relieve the pain. The clinic says it helps 85% of those who get the treatment; however, because of HIPAA laws, they don’t provide any referrals. The treatments are very expensive ($16,000), and results are seen in six weeks to six months. Are you familiar with this treatment, and is it effective for most people? Is this something you can recommend? -- D.B. ANSWER: I also have seen advertisements for stem cell treatments for many conditions. For neuropathy in particular, there are no good studies that give an estimate of effectiveness. It may be the case that 85% of people treated at the clinic report improvement. But the risk of a placebo effect is very high with this kind of procedure, and I could not recommend stem cell treatments for neuropathy without better information about the risks, the benefits and how long those benefits might last.

HOW TO M AKE FATHER’S DAY M ORE ENJOYABLE FOR DAD R&R: Dad’s idea of the perfect Father’s Day may be an afternoon free of obligations and deadlines. A relaxing day in the yard sw imming laps in the pool or hitting a few grounders to your w aiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give Father’s Day a truly perfect ending. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
