I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

DID YOU KNOW?
While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university. According to the UniversityofLaVerne,between50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests. High school seniors on their way to college in the coming months can rest easy that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fellow freshmen are equally uncertain.

Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation.Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all.
While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate“stuff.”
Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP
Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.
WINDOWS & DOORS
We also provide auto glass repair, replacement, and recalibrations. New location coming soon!
AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING
Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR
Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale.
Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.
Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.
Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

Travel tickets: Treat graduates to a trip away from home. Travelers often gain new perspectives and inspiration when visiting a city, state or country for the first time. Travel is good for future entrepreneurs and may help a person stand out in a long list of job applicants. According to Forbes.com, travel can help cultivate relationships outside of one’s existing network and provide ideas from others outside of graduates’ existing personal and professional circles.

* On May 17, 1965, after a two-year investigation, the FBI declares the supposedly pornographic lyrics of “Louie Louie” to be officially unintelligible.
* On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in southwestern Washington, violently erupts. The massive blast killed 57 people and leveled nearly all vegetation as far as 12 miles away.
* On May 19, 1997, a 3-year-old boy dies of avian influenza in Hong Kong. Before the outbreak was controlled, six people were dead and 1.6 million domestic fowl were destroyed. The virus mutated and caused 62 more human deaths in Asia by 2005.

GRADUATION GIFT IDEAS
Survival kit: If the graduate is going to college or leaving college, customize a basket full of items he or she may need to make their transitions that much easier. BREEZE THROUGH SPRING CLEANING
Spring heralds a season of fresh starts and growth -- and what better way to start anew than with a little spring cleaning?
Taking the time to get organized can make all the difference -- and it can make the most cluttered closets and dirtiest corners a breeze to clean. What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer
• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.
• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

Here’s A Tip
“I like the smaller size of kids’ meals at the drive-thru. I save the toys in a box, then I drop them off with a teacher friend to use as rewards in her classroom.” -- via email
“I found a bunch of guttering at a garage sale super cheap, and was inspired to bring it INSIDE my house. I purchased end pieces at my local hardware store and cut the gutters to fit inside my closet. ey line the wall all the way up in horizontal rows. I use them to keep shoes, purses, even small baskets of accessories. It’s wonderful. -- T. in Tennessee

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* One dung beetle can drag 1,141 times its own weight.
* The future Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding dress was entirely paid for with ration coupons.
* Red Solo cups have not only been honored in a song by country singer Toby Keith, they’re a common souvenir to bring back from the U.S. The novelty comes from their appearance in numerous movie party scenes.
* American children are given an average of $3.70 per lost tooth.
Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Thank you
Library Etiquette
While shopping at the Geneseo Dollar Store, I had to go back out to the car because I had forgotten my money. A woman inside paid for my laundry detergent when I got back. I want to thank her. Her kindness is appreciated. I will pay it forward.
A Sincere Heartfelt Thank You
My pregnant granddaughter was visiting April 28th from Michigan. She had a problem with a front tire and the tire shop was hesitant about only doing 1 tire on a four wheel drive. My granddaughter was not able to afford 2 tires and a front end alignment. A female customer graciously paid for both tires and the alignment. This lady will never know how very much her generous gift was appreciated. May God bless you. Thank you so much.
Please teach your children how to act in a library! School age children are coming in, talking loudly, watching/listening to rude videos/music on high, leaving trash and being very disruptive! The library is a public space for all, not a playground or circus.

I moved from the city to this lovely small village. I am handicapped and need a walker to get around. Several times I have tripped over uneven slabs of pavement. I took a tumble twice this past Winter. Complete slabs are crushed. Who is responsible for the sidewalk?

Tim & Deb Smith Spearhead Global Zoological Network
BY SUZIE WELLS
High school sweethearts at the newly-merged Honeoye FallsLima High School, Deb and Tim Smith now of Mendon parted for college and ended up not seeing each other again for 40 years. A er teaching and living several states apart (Deb taught elementary school and college math in Virginia, while Tim taught English at Victor High School), Deb and Tim reunited a er Tim’s mother passed away, Deb heard through the grapevine and sent a sympathy card, and the two began corresponding.
Deb says her fondest memory during their courtship period when she was in Virginia and he in New York was that every day she found an envelope from Tim in her school mailbox. Each contained an original letter Deb had written to Tim 40 years ago; he had saved every one. Tim says, “It took me a long time to play those cards!” and the two say sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for. Engaged on Deb’s mother’s birthday (December 4), the Smiths were married on Tim’s mother’s birthday (June 12) at Ganondagan to honor both of their Native American ancestry, and Tim’s former student officiated.
e Smiths live beside the Mendon Sentinel newspaper office, and the publisher Chris Carosa suggested they write about their background. Whatstartedasrecallingtheirpersonalstoryfor eSentinelreadership bloomed into weekly features about a wide array of local and personal history stories. eir writings inspired their first book, e Beatles, e Bible, & Manson: Reflecting Back With 50 Years of Perspective in 2019, and they’ve explored a variety of topics each year since.
With five books previously published, the Smiths decided to explore their interest in animals. In Crowning the Animal Kingdom, the first global anthology of fictional and nonfictional stories, the Smiths gather over 200 contributions from around the world, sharing anecdotes from over 100 countries, all 50 states, 40 wildlife preserves, and dozens of animal advocacy groups, as well as individual zoos and aquariums, creating a “Noah’s ark of animal antics entertaining and educational for all ages.”
simply asking zoos and aquariums for their most unique animals, oldest animals, and animals with clever names. is soon turned into a project also featuring wildlife preserves and incorporating the expertise of animal advocacy groups who fact-checked their respective animals’ chapters.
e project, the Smiths say, “[sails] into uncharted waters from a literary standpoint … no one has ever taken the threads of zoological conservation, animal history, and animal humor, and fed that trilogy through the eye of a single needle,” as happens in this new book.”
e Smiths’ goal is that their humor and pop culture will “bring the environmental message to a broader audience who might not be inclined to delve into a totally scientific approach to this topic.”
Particularly exciting to the Smiths throughout the process was going to their computer and finding out what part of the country or world would have reached out to contribute to this global project.
e Smiths say they “weren’t trying to write a biology book nor a media encyclopedia,” but instead started by
Some of the Smiths’ favorite stories from the book include the one animal le on the planet that had contact with Adolf Hitler, the animal that was handled by both Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin (1962-2006). Hearing about each zoo’s choices for their animals with the cleverest or funniest names provided hearty laughter along the way as well.
And when the Smiths received input from animal sanctuaries in Africa, such as the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance and Uganda’s Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, with goals of animal rescue and survival against poachers and illegal traffickers, the Smiths knew their project would positively impact the animal kingdom.
e Smiths are happy with their latest publication and hope it will help zoological conservation efforts at home and abroad, while providing entertainment and education to all readers.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Diabetics Receive Great Results From a Plant-Based Diet
DEAR DR. ROACH: Your recent column about treating diabetes left me wondering. Diabetes, as I understand it, is usually a result of too much sugar being consumed. But consuming carbohydrates is not that different because they are quickly converted to sugar through the human chemical processes. So, why are you promoting a plant-based diet that is high in carbohydrates?
Consuming protein, which is easily obtained by eating meat, seems to be the answer to reducing the consumption of simple and complex carbohydrates that are quickly converted to sugar in our body. I’ve switched to a high-protein diet (both plant and animal protein), and my blood sugar has been very well-controlled for a couple of years. -- F.B.
ANSWER: Diabetes is not a result of consuming too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the cells that make insulin are destroyed by the body. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of insulin resistance and a relative inability to secrete insulin in response to a sugar load. In a person with Type 2 diabetes, consuming too much sugar in a short time overloads the body’s ability to respond, so their blood sugar goes up. It is persistent high blood sugar that is responsible for most of the damage to the kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and nerves.
I am careful about what I mean by a plant-based diet. While it’s true that a diet consisting entirely of maple syrup and orange juice would be extremely bad for a person with diabetes because of the concerns about blood sugar that you raised, a plant-based diet that is mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish and nuts/seeds with moderate amounts of whole fruits does not raise blood sugar more than a standard Western diet.
The high fiber content of the legumes, whole grains and vegetables prevents rapid absorption, and the protein and healthy fat in nuts and fatty fish likewise slow stomachemptying. Finally, there is good evidence that people with diabetes have excellent results with this kind of diet.
You are right that protein is important for a person with diabetes, but many high-protein diets based on meat also have high amounts of saturated fat, which increase the risk for heart blockages. In addition, saturated fat is a major cause of disease and death in people with diabetes. However, it is possible to have a healthy, high-protein diet with care.

Pet Allergies Blossom in Spring
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 7-year-old cat, “Sunbeam,” has a tough time in the spring when the pollen starts to fly. He sneezes frequently, his eyes water and he scratches hot spots on his skin. I’ve tried many things to reduce the allergens in the home: I vacuum every other day, run an air purifier near where he sleeps and I brush his coat daily. TITLE: None of that seems to help. What else can I try? -- Harry in Pittsburgh
DEAR HARRY: You’re doing your best to reduce airborne allergens, and that’s great. However, because it doesn’t seem to be helping, it’s time to enlist the help of your cat’s veterinarian.
Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock just turned 2 and loves pup-cups, tennis balls and long walks at Dewitt park!
e vet can suggest some other ways to reduce allergens in the home, and will consider that Sunbeam is reacting to more than one issue -- not just pollen, but indoor dust or even the food he’s eating. ey will also check for any secondary issues that may be contributing to Sunbeam’s discomfort, like an ear infection or yeast infection.
Short-term treatment with a prescription medication, like a steroid or an antihistamine, may be necessary during the worst part of the season. ese will help reduce the intense itching and eye irritation, and should help clear up hot spots on his skin.
At home, try adding fish oil and probiotics to your cat’s food -- these supplements can help with itchy, flaky skin conditions. (I give my cat a teaspoon of plain yogurt daily to balance his gut bacteria.) An occasional bath, twice a month or so, using a pet shampoo that contains oatmeal will soothe his skin and wash away any lingering allergens on his coat. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a winter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s worth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeowners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.

DID YOU KNOW?
Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The CanadianNurses’Association, formerlytheCanadianNationalAssociation of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
