NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Earth Day got me thinking about how many plastic bottled beverages my family goes through. I have found six glass reusable bottles that can be run through the dishwasher, and I store them in the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing that I’m not contributing to a plastic problem.” -- JoAnn * Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * “If you love to burn candles as much as I do, consider storing them in the refrigerator for a day or so before burning them. I swear, it makes them burn evenly. Someone told me this once, and I tried it and have been doing it ever since. No more crooked candles.” -- J.L. in Tennessee * When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They’ll soak it up, and you won’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week at most, though.” -- J.M. in Louisiana * Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t usable, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term. * Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yard-waste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are Irresponsible Owners the Bane of Dog Parks? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I first adopted my Collie mix “Sara,” I went to the dog park near my apartment every morning. I thought it would be a great place for a year-old puppy to socialize with other dogs and humans. A year later, I no longer take her to the dog park if there are any other dogs there -- which means taking pre-dawn walks or bypassing the park entirely. I quickly learned that while many dog owners are responsible people who train and socialize their dogs, others don’t train them at all, or train them inadequately. On Sara’s first day, a huge dog ran up, snarling and barking at both of us. The dog’s owner just sat on a bench, waving and yelling, “He’s friendly,” while Sara cowered behind my legs. A few days later, that same dog got in a vicious fight with two other dogs. Because we continued to have negative experiences with other dogs (and their owners), making it impossible to train and socialize Sara, I’ve stopped going there. I don’t think dog parks are a great idea anymore, even though I live in an urban area and green spaces are important for dogs. What’s your take? -- Hannah J. in Boston DEAR HANNAH: I’m really sorry that happened to Sara and you, and you’re doing the right thing by taking her at uncrowded times. Overcrowded parks, resource-guarding and aggressively playful dogs can make it a negative experience. Dog parks are a community resource, and it’s important for dog owners to work together to make the park work. Find out if there’s a volunteer committee for your particular park. If not, and you want to keep using the dog park, consider forming a group to address behavior and other issues. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Happy Mother’s Day! 9 Global Traditions Inspire Us as We Celebrate Mom BY MAKAYLA HOLLIMAN & ELIJAH ROBINSON
I
t’s that time again! Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make the mothers in your life feel special, loved, and respected—especially our own mothers who loved us first and continue to love us with unwavering faith. Mother’s Day D is a big event in the United States, but did you know many countries around the world also set aside a special time to celebrate mothers? We gathered fun and unique Mother’s Day traditions from nine countries around the globe, and we hope you find something new to add to your Mother’s Day celebrations!
France
Mother’s Day, “Fête des Mères,” occurs on the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday of June. Fête des Mères originated during the Napoleonic era during which families with a large number of children were presented with medals as part of an effort to promote large families and curb low birth rates. Some parts of France still honor this tradition and present moms with medals on Mother’s Day, known as Médaille de la Famille. It is customary to make a bouquet cake for mom, followed by a family dinner. Children typically give flowers, jewelry, perfumes, handmade gifts, handwritten poems, and chocolates as presents.
Germany
Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, is known as Muttertag and was first celebrated in 1922. Here, celebrating mothers extends further than the women of the house; it pays tribute to the mothers of the universe. Carried out with a high degree of pomp and circumstance, this day sees children give their moms gifts and cards, red carnations celebrating mothers who are alive, and white carnations honoring mothers who have passed away. Surprises are common, and travel tickets are a traditional present. The family also makes a homemade dinner to give mom a break.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. Ethiopia holds a festival called “Antrosht” which is dedicated only to moms. Families come together for large meals and celebrations. Daughters bring vegetables and cheese while sons bring meat, prepare meat hash, and stage performances featuring their family heroes.
India
Like Ethiopia, India also holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. In India, this celebration lasts for 10 days. Hindus honor Durga, the goddess of mothers, at the Durga Puja festival. This religious ceremony hosts family reunions centered around the traditional story of how Durga returns to her parents to show her own children off to them. The festivities continue with making food, giving gifts and decorating homes.
Italy
In Italy, mothers are honored on “La Festa della Mamma,” observed the second Sunday of May. The mother is regarded as the most important person in the family, and children must call if they cannot come home that day. While she is honored year-round, on this day, she is pampered from dawn to dusk. Small presents, roses, and handwritten poetry are popular gifts, while cards are not commonly given. Lunch is eaten out to give moms a break, and

at the end of the day, mothers receive a heart-shaped cake made for them by their children.
Japan
Japan’s customs for Mother’s Day are entirely different. Here, the holiday was revived after World War II and was used to console mothers who had lost children during the war. Today, Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May with red or pink carnations as well as help with chores and cooking. Japanese families make traditional Tamagoyaki or Chawanmushi dishes, while children make handmade gifts or portraits for their mothers.
Mexico
In Mexico, Mother’s Day—“La Dia de la Madre”—is celebrated on May 10th. Each year, women are celebrated with mariachi serenades, special mass services, and children’s performances. They are also treated out to lunches and dinners. No matter what day May 10th falls on, Mexican families always make time to celebrate their mothers.
Peru
One of Peru’s most important events, Mother’s Day, is celebrated for an entire week with much anticipation leading up to the second Sunday of May. This celebration honors not only mothers, but all the women in the home. Families organize lunches, dinners, parties and trips throughout the week, and children prepare events and festivities. Mothers are given the opportunity to visit exhibits, museums, and festivals for free. They are also read poetry and stories, given gifts, flowers, and treats, served dinner, and entertained by their children. Peruvian families also visit cemeteries to honor their dearly departed mothers and grandmothers, bringing flowers, balloons, and other salutations for the graves. No mother is forgotten in this showing of appreciation for a mother’s love and sacrifice.
United Kingdom
British families hold Mother’s Day, referred to as Mothering Sunday, on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Dating back to the 1600s, England was the first country in the world to create a holiday specifically for celebrating mothers. Shifting away from its historic roots as a day of showing respect to one’s “mother church,” Mothering Sunday increasingly centered around celebrating moms across Britain. Flowers are the most popular gifts, and the most common types of flowers children give their mothers are roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums. It is also traditional to give mum a rich almond cake called ‘Mothering Cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake.’

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING My Mother’s hands, so thin and work-worn, Were loved by me as jewels, rare, For they had rocked me in my cradle, And, lovingly, they’d stroked my hair. They worked for me, both night and morning; They helped to smooth away my fears, For never were these dear hands idle; I think of them with love and tears! My Mother’s hands to me were precious: I thought their beauty was sublime; I felt no harm on earth could touch me If they were near me all the time! ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “My Mother’s Hands” (1940s)

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION Determine your motivation for renovating: Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services.

President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914. After he was persuaded by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared that the second Sunday of every May would be Mother’s Day. In his first Mother’s Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to “[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country,” according to History.com. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles What Lured Us Back to the Senior Center? The too-young staffers at the senior center finally figured out that we’re not coming back until COVID is gone. And it’s not gone. In some areas it’s easing up a bit, but here it’s still going strong. We’re not willing to risk contagion by dashing in the door of the senior center and pretending things are back to normal. At least once a week the center sends out emails and gets few replies in response. Come to the Ladies Lunch served indoors? No thanks. Experiment with still life photography in the meeting room, with vases, statuettes and fruit provided? No. We held out, refusing as a group to be party to any potential COVID-spreading indoor activity. Finally, the staff got it. They went with videos. The art classes will be online. The book club will have an online discussion, with a link to how to log in to the meeting. And the exercise classes will be posted online so everyone can stretch and work out at home. But it was the offer of free haircuts that broke our resolve. Some of us haven’t been in a salon for two years. The rules were specific. Stay in our car until we were handed an at-home COVID test, which we would take in the car. If it proved to be negative, we could proceed to the next step (one person at a time), which was to sit on a chair in the hall inside the right-side door of the center and wait for our turn. When the person ahead of us was finished (down the hall in the kitchen), she would be escorted out the left-side door to the parking lot. It was glorious. We each came out of the left-side door with a spring in our step, freshly relieved of two years of unruly hair. Staff should have thought of this before.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas. Page 17

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS
UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER
Fishing: Of course not all outdoor activities need to make seniors huff and puff. Fishing provides a great reason to get outdoors, and many individuals devoted to fishing report feeling less stressed after a day spent casting for their favorite fish. Individuals who consume what they catch also can benefit by improving their diets, as the American Heart Association notes that consuming certain types of fish has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and obesity.
Consider cross-promotional events. Cross-promotion is a marketing endeavor in which two or more businesses work together to promote a service or product. For example, a local brewery may partner with a local restaurant to showcase a new beer release and a special menu item that pairs well with that particular beer. These types of promotions shed light on what each business can offer, and many consumers would be happy to learn they’re supporting at least two local businesses at the same time.

Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped
Make sure you don’t miss a single word!
Quality care in a warm, friendly Environment.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW COMMUNITIES CAN RECOGNIZE NURSES Highlight a local nurse each week on social media. Community leaders can ask residents to nominate a local nurse each week and then choose one nominee to highlight on social media. Students or local officials can interview the nominee, asking them about their careers, including what compelled them to become a nurse and their most interesting experiences on the job. Interviews can be posted on community social media pages so all residents can get to know the unsung heroes in their communities.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Homes are safe havens that people retreat to in an effort to relax and unwind. However, homes may be harboring some hazards that put their inhabitants at risk. Cleaning products and chemicals can be found in every home, but some may be putting people in jeopardy. Even seemingly safe items can prove dangerous when they are used and/or stored incorrectly. Individuals who make a concerted effort to educate themselves about common household chemicals can reduce the likelihood that such cleaners will hurt them in the long run.

Eating Out on Mother’s Day Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Guiding Light Mom, thank you for always being there for me and guiding me through life. Love you so much! Loving Memory Although you’re no longer around for me to share the day with you, I think of you every day and thank you for being the best mom that a son could have! - Dan M Selfless Love Mom, your selfless love, kindness, generosity, and Godly example have always been an inspiration to me and have shaped who I am today. Thank you, and I love you! - Amanda D. Grateful Dog Thank you soooo much to the wonderful people, a Husband and Wife in a tan colored SUV, and to the woman in the white Honda who took immediate action when they saw me running down the road, trying to catch my dog. These super folks took time to try blocking my dog, then to pull their cars over, chase, and catch my dog. His invisible fence collar has a new battery in it, and it will be on him before he slips out his dog door again. Thank you! - Anna Animal Hospital Praises A huge thanks goes out to Dr. Chris and Megan! Our furry friend slipped a disk in his back late in the afternoon on April 4th. We called York Animal Hospital, and Dr. Chris was leaving within the hour. She was in the emergency care units and told us to get there ASAP. When we arrived, Dr. Chris and Megan were waiting for us. We are now in the third week, and our furry friend is improving every day, taking two steps on April 22nd. A huge thank you to Dr. Chris and Megan, and of course, to the rest of the staff for our regular weekly visits. It's going to be a long road, but we appreciate their concern, service, and all they do for us and others. God bless you all!

Recycling It's pretty sad when you call [local town] Code Enforcement, [local town] Hall, and [others] to find a solution to businesses not recycling, and you pretty much get an answer of "Oh well." No one seems to know or care. So as all these cans, glass, and junk get thrown onto the ground, remember, you have children and grandchildren who have to live on this dirty earth. Why can't people just do the right thing?
Enough already! Am I the only one who’s sick of businesses, companies, services, and retailers overusing the excuse of COVID? Most of these are still trying to increase profits even though supply, laborers, and inflation are affecting all of us. Some still allow personnel to work from home which leaves fewer people to actually provide services to customers. Eliminate the government “freebies” to force people to actually work for their money. Stop giving free money to renters and get them back to work. Quit stealing from the taxpayers and get us back to where we were. The COVID excuse being made is just that: an excuse! Not a Drag Strip! Moving to this beautiful town over 10 years ago was the best decision my family could have made. It’s such a beautiful town with friendly neighbors. However, we couldn’t be more upset with the way most of the younger generations use [local street] in [local town] as a “drag strip." Living on this street is absolutely beautiful, and the 30 miles a hour limit should be enforced. There are many that hit the stop sign on center and then use the straight away as if it’s 390 in a 65mph zone. It’s 30mph or slower. Please slow down. There are autistic children that live in this area as well as family pets. Let’s be safe and slow down. Tomorrows are never guaranteed. We would hate to see something happen to children, walkers, runners, family pets, etc. Slow it down, please!

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Both wills and trusts can be useful when estate planning. In fact, wills are often used to establish trusts, and many people have both a will and a trust.
Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect. EMPLOYMENT

Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
