TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough

$129

---

NEW PATIENT SPECIAL

DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis. This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them. This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure. Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms. Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses.

DID YOU KNOW? Despite the ongoing efforts to study cancer and cancer treatments, in many ways the disease remains a mystery to researchers and medical professionals alike. According to data published by the research-based healthcare company Roche, for reasons that are not entirely understood, breast cancer is more common in the left breast than the right. The left breast is 5 to10 percent more likely to develop cancer than the right breast. The left side of the body is also 10 percent more vulnerable to the skin cancer melanoma than the right side of the body.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

North Star Roofing LLC METAL & SHINGLES

If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect. * Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of the iconic jungle man Tarzan, worked as a pencil-sharpener salesman before trying his hand at fiction. He only started writing at the age of 36 to support his wife and two kids. * Boanthropy is a psychological disorder in which patients believe they are a cow. * The infamous crocodile jump by James Bond in "Live and Let Die" was performed with real crocs by the only person willing to attempt it -- the owner of the crocodile farm. * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn't just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a two-way conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to third-party vendors. Goodbye, Barbie! Hey You! To the young man in the little purple car that seems to think he has to speed through town. Your plate number has been turned into the cops. Slow down! There are young children here.

S E V RA St. Agnes Cemetery Many, many thanks to Jim Harrington for his organization, expert tree trimming, and volunteer hours at St. Agnes Cemetery! For five weeks, Jim selflessly gave of his time and talent in trimming trees and has earned that halo that only good people can see! Special thanks to Matt Weslowsk, The Gerwig Family, Kevin Van Allen, Richard Burke, Ken Farrell, Russ Ruter, Mike Cochrane, Sheriff Tom Dougherty, George Eblacker, Jerry Dupont, Jerry Dougherty, Tom Crye and crew, and a bunch of Avon Central students who donated their time. The St. Agnes Cemetery looks beautiful thanks to these wonderful volunteers! We live in such an awesome, caring community! Many thanks! I just wanted to say thank you to the person who turned in my social security card at Lowe’s in Hornell. I accidentally left the zipper on my wallet open, and it had fallen out in the parking lot, much to my dismay. It’s so nice to know that there are still good people in this world. Thanks again! Thank you, patriot! During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America. Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it! (As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!

Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home. Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest. Love your pets? Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

Q&A with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum in Bloomfield: Part I BY DP DUNN

O

nly a few generations ago, news took days or weeks to travel and was carried either by mail, printed news, or visitors from afar. Mr. Samuel Morse, his wonderful code, and companies like Western Union, founded in Rochester, NY, made communication vastly more efficient. However, Mr. Marconi blended several scientific and technological advancements to create the magic of nearly instantaneous communication across heretofore unimaginable distances! Then it was called wireless. Now, it is called radio. And its history lives just around the corner in Bloomfield. Nestled in the small town of Bloomfield, on Routes 5 & 20 sits an unassuming collection of buildings, housing a world-class assembly of vintage and modern communications equipment. The museum was founded in 1952 by three Kodak engineers who saw the need to preserve original wireless technology and its history. We sat with Bob Hobday, Director of the Antique Wireless Museum, and asked him a few questions. We invite you to pull up a chair and join us! What are three facts about the Museum that you wished people in the area knew? The AWA Museum has a world-class collection with many oneof-a-kind items. We are a museum of the history of communication technology spanning almost 200 years: from Telegraph equipment dating to the early 1800s to wireless text messaging and cell phones – today and beyond. Our Museum has something for all ages. How has the magic of radio influenced your life? When I was a boy of about 11, I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever, and the doctor said I had to go bed for a year. Radio became my friend and my window on the world (no TV in our house at that time). I would listen to the big Silvertone console radio for hours each day. I have been interested in radio ever since. What are a few of the most interesting items in the Museum’s collection? • Samuel Morse’s personal notebook in which is the design of first commercial telegraph line built in the US from Washington to Baltimore in 1844. • The world’s first cell phone. • The first frequency modulation (FM) transmitter used in the Empire State Building to demonstrate that FM radio worked. • Replica of the Titanic radio room using radio equipment of that era. • A 1000-watt spark transmitter is demonstrated. • The first TV camera in Rochester in 1949. • The control room and 250,000-watt transmitter from the Voice of America station in Delano, California. • The world’s first transistor radio built by Bell Labs. Tell us about the Museum’s ‘Hollywood connection’ and some of the films the Museum has been involved with? In January 2020, a film company from Pittsburgh creating a feature length film on the Titanic entitled “Unsinkable,” rented the Museum for two days in order to use the Titanic radio room exhibit for their movie and to engage the Museum staff ’s knowledge. It was fascinating. Older folks remember radio entertainment and technology, but why would tech-savvy younger people enjoy the Museum? For older folks, it is visit of nostalgia – “Oh, I had one of those.” “I remember using one of those.” Then come the memories of Mom & Dad, family events, the service, jobs, kids. The stories are wonderful. Young folks like Morse Code – not what you expect – but they really enjoy learning Morse Code, the big typewriter (a teletype machine), the Titanic radio room, the wall phones they can talk on as

We had seven classes of 4th graders visit the Museum a couple of years ago and I was showing two young ladies the world’s first cell phone. One of them got a puzzled look on her face and asked, “Where is the screen?” I said, “It didn’ t have a screen.” She thought for a moment and asked, “How did you do text messaging?” I said “You couldn’t do text messaging. That came much later.” The museum also offers a “Radio Fab Lab” for youngsters 7 to 15. This is a chance to learn some fundamental electronics, a bit of history, and build a useful circuit to take home. The classes are built to supplement the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teaching philosophy. These are just a few. There are really too many to list here. The Gospel Corner BEHOLDING CHRIST A big lump thought to be a stone, lay for centuries in a shallow, slow running brook in North Carolina. People passing by saw only an ugly lump and passed on. One day another man saw it and he judged it to be a good doorstop for his cabin. A geologist stopped one day and examined the lump and recognized it as containing gold, and thus was discovered the largest lump of gold ever found east of the Rockies. Many people look on Jesus the same way. Some look upon Him as a great teacher but still a lump of clay like the rest of us. Others feel that He is our example for good works by which we may get to heaven. There are even those who feel that Jesus is a good person to have on their side, so they join a church and render lip service to Him, but remain in their sinful lifestyle. How wonderful it is when you look past the outer garment of flesh the Lord Jesus put on at Bethlehem and see the royalty (gold) inside. He is the real living eternal God who can forgive your sins and give you a real lift in Christ. The Gold is right there... take Him!

Is a 3-Legged Dog Worth Adopting? NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Fill a 2-liter soda bottle with water, then plunge the top upside down into a potted plant for self-watering while you are on vacation. Use smaller bottles for smaller pots. * Going to the beach for your vacation? Here’s a handy hint to take great care of your swimsuit. (They get more expensive all the time!) Pack at least two suits and bring a box of baking soda. Soak the suit for 15 minutes in a baking soda and water solution, then lay flat on a towel. Roll the towel up and wring lightly. Unroll and hang to dry. Rotate suits. -- JoAnn

* Help for a sunburn: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) right away. Soak a cloth in cold milk and drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* Use your Christmas light timers to set different lights to go on or off at certain times of the day while you are away on vacation. You can even use a timer on a radio, so it comes on sometimes too. The variation will make people think you are home. * To ease the ache of a brain freeze, simply cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Blow out hot air, and it will recirculate to warm your palate in seconds. Works like a charm.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise? -- Donna P., via email DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can. Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight. TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

JUMP BACK IN!

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
