YARD SALE TIPS
Be reasonable when pricing items. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System
When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.
Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.
Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.
Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many caloriesas30minutesofaerobics.
TYPES OF AERATORS
Slicing aerator: According to Pennington, slicing aerators employ rotating blades that slice through thatch and down into the soil. These aerators leave the soil in the ground.

I like to use my compost for gardening but I have no idea how much to mix with my soil.
NoideaonapHlevel!Help!!
Compost is an excellent garden soil amendment to use every gardening season and should be added starting early before planting. It also can be added as a mulch as your plants begin to grow and produce. Compost improves the tilth (workability) of the soil and acts like a slow-release fertilizer for your plants.
Most good garden soil has around
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
4% compost. I like to use about 10% in my gardening, which works out to adding about 1 inch of compost worked into the top 9 inches of soil. Mature, finished compost acts like a buffer to soil pH.Unfinished compost produces amino (organic) acids as the low-temperature bacteria break down the compost. Mature compost becomes more neutral (between 6-8 pH) as mesophile bacteria take over.
Most garden plants require a soil pH of between 6 and 7. You can get soil
test kits, testing meters, and paper test strips and test your soil yourself, or you can contact your local county Cooperative Extension office for more information.
Any recommendations on getting rid of spinach
The “spinach worms” you have are likely a variety of caterpillar. They can be treated effectively with an organic substance called Bacillus Thuringiensis, often called BT. This is a common product in garden centers. Follow all instructions on the label closely.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
People who get COVID-19 vaccine less likely to die from any cause
DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you referred to a U.K. source that stated “all-cause mortality is very significantly reduced in people who have had the COVID-19 vaccine, compared to unvaccinated people.” I wasn’t sure what you meant by all-cause? Does this mean any and all deaths, with or without COVID-19, for any reason, have been very significantly reduced just by getting the COVID-19 shot? Or does it mean that any and all deaths associated with COVID-19 have been reduced in those who have been vaccinated? If it is the first, then fewer people should be dying, people should be living longer, and we should not see a decrease in life expectancy (except for the addition of those dying from COVID-19, which brings the age down). Anyway, if the first is true, then I will definitely continue getting the COVID-19 shot just to live longer, with or without getting COVID-19! -- C.P.
ANSWER: The U.K. study looked at all-cause mortality, which means anyone who dies from any reason. The study found that getting the COVID-19 vaccine reduced the likelihood of dying from COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 causes. One potential problem studies face is assigning cause of death. If a person with a very serious cancer who is expected to pass away within a few months gets COVID-19 and dies, did the cancer kill them, or did COVID-19? If you have to choose just one cause, the answer could be misleading. That’s why the results of the U.K. study (and a Florida study that showed similar results) were so important. People who get the COVID-19 vaccine are less likely to die from any cause.
In the last few years in the U.S., the longstanding trend of improved mortality has reversed, and death rates are going up, partially due to COVID-19.

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY
Magnesium: The Mayo Clinic reports that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production. Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE
Purchase eco-friendly accessories. A way to make a fitness routine more environmentally friendly is to purchase workout accessories that do not have large carbon footprints. Instead of single-use plastic water bottles, purchase a reusable water bottle made of recycled materials. In addition, opt for workout gear made of organic or recycled materials. Such items can be found online or at sporting goods stores or retailers that cater to outdoors enthusiasts.
DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE
It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.
Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FROM A PRIVATE SELLER
Confirm the number of owners. There’s no magic number of owners a vehicle can have before it’s considered too risky to buy, but the more owners a car has had, the less likely buyers will learn its full history. In addition, if sellers were not the first owners, they won’t know how the car was treated or driven prior to them buying it. That’s another potential red flag to consider before buying a car that has had more than one owner.

EVERYTHING BEGINS WITH A PENCIL: AN INTERVIEW WITH ILLUSTRATOR TED WILLIAMS
BY MARY MAGER
For many in the world of illustration, Ted Williams needs no introduction. His attention to detail has garnered him both respect and admiration among colleagues. His journey began with a childhood dream: to make a living drawing. Indeed, this dream became a very successful art career, rst in advertising, later in book and magazine illustration, then with publishing his own aviation books. His remarkable talent has opened the door to many interesting projects including the well-known John Deere for Kids Art Property. He likes solving problems for people via his art.
In your childhood, who inspired you?
Growing up I had my heroes. American WWII ying ace, Chuck Yeager, was one. Listening to older generations retell their WWII storiesprovidedmanyexamplesofcourage. emagazineeraenjoyed its heyday in the 1950s, and I was exposed to such illustration greats as Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne.
One of my educators, Father Cullen, C.S.B., and I became friends in high school. He was truly my art mentor. Under his guidance, I drew and painted many stage sets. My dream of becoming an artist grew even stronger when, in my senior year, I took an art class with Father Cullen. Even a er graduating, Father Cullen and I remained close. He performed the marriage ceremony for my wife, Gail, and me.
However, not all my teachers encouraged me in art. Sister Cyril speci cally reminded me, “Master Williams, I would pay more attention to your studies because you’ll never make a living drawing airplanes.”
Sister Cyril was mistaken. How did your career start?
A er serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, I studied art and design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Soon, I obtained a job as a dra sman at Kodak where I did technical illustrations by hand. I began to develop a reputation for being good at drawing mechanical things, especially metal objects.
A er Kodak, I became an art director. I worked at several advertising agencies around Rochester. My rst solo agency was a service studio, Williams Advertising Art. Later, I established the Williams Harris Communications Advertising Agency, a full-service marketing communications rm. I spent much of my commercial career designing, writing, and producing communications for companies like GM, Kodak, and Xerox.
A memorable project from this time was when I painted a Supermarine Spit re, a WWII British ghter aircra , for the Spit re Machine Tool Company. e nished oil painting was used in a promotional campaign for the Chicago-based company. A er that, I was contacted by a U.S. Air Force Major who had seen the Spit re painting and wanted me to create a series of aircra paintings for an Air National Guard calendar. From there, I was contacted by Skyways: Journal of the Airplane to depict airplanes in air races. I worked
closely with this publication for many years, producing complex historically-accurate illustrations for many editions. at was a very busy time; I was also illustrating for Houghton Mi in Harcourt and Oxford University Press as well as running an advertising agency. What led you to illustrations for children’s books?
Around this time, I received a call from Parachute Publishing. ey were looking for audition art to revive the John Deere for Kids Property. My previous work with children’s textbooks had piqued my interest in communication with children through art. My audition art was a Santa Claus delivering gi s in a John Deere Gator utility vehicle. Parachute liked it and I restyled all John Deere art for the Johnny Tractor Series. By this time, advertising had crossed into digital art, and this series was the beginning of my specialization in digital art.
What is your creative process?
My creative process begins with a pencil. I draw numerous pencil dra s, which are sample, problem-solving illustrations I create based on what needs to be communicated on each page of the book. From there, I work digitally to produce nal illustrations to be used inside the book. At every stage I consult with a book editor to make sure the entire project is on time, on track, and on budget.
What media do you like to work in?
I sketch by hand and paint in oils. I have a diverse portfolio with examples in many media. While I o en work in oils and have experimented with many other media, I have come to embrace and truly enjoy the digital process as well.
What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?
You have to handle rejection. Constantly improve your cra . Talent needs practice every day. Learn new skills so you keep up with the times.

PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT
Know the dress code. Dress accordingly for the destination and planned activity. The dating and socializing resource Girls Chase advises that slim, black jeans can look classy on a night out. Footwear is important as well, especially if you will be doing some walking or dancing. Women who choose to wear heels may want to stash a foldable pair of flats in their handbags in the event they need some relief.

Keep Your Dog Safe From Tick-Borne Infections
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m afraid to take my 1-year-old Lab, Shiner, on hikes in the woods because he might be bitten by a tick and get ill. What’s your take on the tick situation? -- Brian in Concord, New Hampshire
DEAR BRIAN: Even though ticks carrying diseases like Lyme are a concern, do not let the risk put you o of bringing your dog along on hiking adventures. Yes, ticks are numerous, and you live in a hotspot for tick-borne diseases. But there are precautions that you can take to keep both Shiner and yourself healthy.
A Lyme vaccine is available for dogs, so talk to your vet about getting Shiner this shot. But ticks carry other diseases too. So be sure that Shiner wears a ea-and-tickrepellent collar or takes a ea-andtick (and heartworm) preventative medication.
Keep ticks o of your own skin by treating clothing and gear with permethrin and letting it dry completely before wearing the gear (permethrin should never be applied to your skin). Just before setting out on your hike, spray insect repellent that works on numerous bugs, including ticks and eas, onto your skin.
A er your hike, before getting into the car, check Shiner’s coat for ticks and other bugs. Run your hand along his fur from head to tail to dislodge any critters or debris from the top of his coat. Check under his tail and between the pads of his paws. Shake your gear out and do a tick check on yourself as much as possible.
At home, do a more thorough check of Shiner by running your hands into his coat and visually checking his fur and skin. Remove any embedded ticks using a tick removal tool.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING
Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

I got Missy when she was 7 weeks old and she will be 3 in Sept. She boxes like a kangaroo, jumps up on your leg and plays fetch, and gets in trouble playing with my plant and walking in my food cupboards.

Many thanks!
Many thanks to the cute little lady that paid my bill at the Dollar Store Friday evening the 12th of May. It has been passed on already.
Welcomed by Batavia
I moved to Batavia just about a year and a half ago, but it did not take me long to fall in love with this place. As I lived most of my life in the Northtowns, this area has been such a breath of fresh air. I have the pleasure of working in customer service, and the vast majority of people I interact with are kind and decent people. The small businesses around here are supported and mostly thriving, the neighborhoods are mostly clean, the parks are many, charming, and also well-kept. All of the people I have personally met in this school district and even municipal system are at worst decent, if not warm and helpful.
Gratitude for all of my wonderful neighbors and those who contribute to the abundance of joy there is to be found here in Batavia. I’m glad to have made it my home.
Small Vent
Although the intent is great, some people don’t understand Memorial Day. It’s to acknowledge and remember those who DIED for our country. Veterans have their own day of recognition. One thing most don’t realize is that Active Duty military are not Veterans. After they’re off active duty, unless dishonorably discharged, they’re Veterans.
No loud muffler law in [local town]
I live in [local town] and have 2 neighbors with loud mufflers. I have called the police 3 times but we have no law about loud mufflers. They come and go at all hours and run their car right under my bedroom window. I have asked them to fix their car but no luck. I’m tired of getting woken up and so is my better half. Had to vent… mufflered out.
Really?
What’s wrong with this: a pickup truck passing cars driving 65 in a 55 zone. The tailgate is down. The bed loaded with multiple rakes, gardening equipment, tree branches and a gas can. Nothing tied down. I would put money down that if anything bad happened after hitting a pot hole or bump, the driver would continue on like nothing happened. Where has intelligence gone?

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE
Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY
Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.
