A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.
Buy the bulbs that match your driving habits. Some drivers spend a significant amount of time behind the w heel w hile others use their cars or trucks only to run errands or make short trips. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be surprised if, in spite of your well-made plans, something goes awry. But don’t worry. Your knowledge of the facts plus your Arian charm will help you work it out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A personal relationship seems to be demanding more than you feel you’re able to give. Best advice: Confront the issue. You could find the situation surprisingly easy to work through. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist being pressured into meeting your self-imposed deadline. This is important if you really feel that taking more time to finish a project could save time in the long run. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A vacation choice seems less interesting than when you first made it. Could it be a matter of the place or the people going with you? Find out before you consider a change of plans. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Someone might be overriding your Leonine logic to get you to agree to “favors” that you would normally avoid. Take a new look at what you’ve been asked to do and see if you’ve been misled. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to keep that emerging “judgmental” aspect in check this week. Too many critiques on relatively unimportant issues could create a lot of negative bounce-back reactions. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Facing unpleasant facts about an associate isn’t easy. But ignoring them isn’t wise. Ask a trusted (and neutral) friend to help guide you on what to do and how you might do it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A shift in opinion regarding a workplace situation could go a long way in vindicating the stand you’ve taken. But be aware that a satisfactory resolution could still be a long way off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s not like you to choose the easy way rather than the right way to do things. So, follow your instincts and feel assured they will lead you to the right decision. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Hold off on making a personal commitment until you find out what it really entails and whose interests are actually involved. There could be hidden facts you need to know. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friend offers an unexpected opportunity that could lead to a career change. Check it out carefully and consider getting an assessment from someone familiar with this field. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A surprising discovery leads to mixed reactions from those involved in the “revelation.” But as you come to appreciate the truth, you’ll be able to come to terms with your feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of travel helps you appreciate the wonders of the world. You would find a satisfying career in any travelrelated industry. c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Don’t Drink Wine for Health Reasons ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: As a winemaker, I get my daily (small) dose of resveratrol through red wine. I drink about a half bottle daily. But I also take resveratrol supplements. What is the latest evidence as to the health benefits of this natural polyphenol? Am I ingesting too much? -- G.G. ANSWER: Resveratrol is a substance found in red wine, coming from grape skins. One study in rats showed that it improved lifespan, and many people were interested in it. However, the dose of red wine needed to duplicate the study would be about 1,000 liters daily for a human; worse, a trial of resveratrol (in people with multiple myeloma) showed no benefit, and five of the 24 subjects developed kidney failure (it was not clear whether the myeloma or the resveratrol was responsible for the kidney damage. Also, the dose used was 5 grams, which is 10 to 20 times the size of the usual supplement). A trial in Alzheimer’s disease patients was too short to prove benefit but did seem to show increased brain volume. A 2016 review shows that at high doses, it lowers blood pressure (which often is raised by alcohol) and cholesterol. For that reason, resveratrol still holds promise, but it’s too early to recommend as a supplement. It’s not the resveratrol I’m worried about your getting too much of; it’s alcohol. A half a bottle of wine (assuming average alcohol content, which varies a little) for an average-size man is two and a half glasses, which contains alcohol that is over the level of most recommendations (one glass for women, two for men, with food). For some people, wine enhances pleasure in life when taken moderately, and that’s the only reason it should be consumed. Alcohol should not be taken for health reasons.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I think I may have herpes, but I’m not sure. What are the symptoms of the virus? When I go to the doctor, what do I say? When I was there last time, I was given a urine test for STDs, which was negative, but now I urinate a lot and have a bump on my penis. -- M.G. ANSWER: When we are discussing herpes as a sexually transmitted disease, we usually refer to herpes simplex virus type 2. Even though other herpes viruses can be transmitted sexually, HSV-2 is the most prevalent, with approximately 50 million people in the U.S. infected. HSV-2 usually is asymptomatic, but in both men and women it can be associated with periodic outbreaks of blisters, classically filled with clear fluid and painful. During this time, the virus can be accurately identified by a laboratory. However, it is often not a classic appearance, and it’s wise to consider the diagnosis of HSV for any genital lesion. The quality of the herpes blood test has improved in recent years, and it is a good way to make the diagnosis in someone who doesn’t have a lesion at the time they see the doctor. Two other STDs -- gonorrhea and chlamydia -- can be diagnosed using a urine test, but not HSV. When you go to the doctor, ask for a blood test to rule out herpes definitively. Urinating a lot is not a usual symptom for STDs, but painful or uncomfortable urination is.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 30, 1859, Emile Blondin becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. The feat was witnessed by some 5,000 spectators. Blondin wore pink tights and a yellow tunic, and carried a balancing pole. * On June 26, 1917, during World War I, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops land in France. By the war's end on Nov. 11, 1918, more than 2 million American soldiers had served on the battlefields of Western Europe, and more than 50,000 lost their lives. * On June 25, 1950, in one of the greatest soccer upsets of all time, an American team composed largely of amateurs defeats its more polished English opponents, 1-0, at the World Cup in Brazil. Assembled just days before the match, the U.S. team included a dishwasher, two mailmen, a teacher and a mill worker.

Make Health A Family Reunion Affair: Talk With Your Family About Kidney Health (NAPS)—Family reunions are a great way to reconnect with loved ones, celebrate your family’s heritage and make new memories. Family reunions are also an opportunity to talk about family health history. You may have family members who have diabetes, high blood pressure or both. These are conditions that often run in families and are risk factors for kidney disease. Kidney disease affects African Americans more than other groups. That’s why it’s important to talk to your family about risk factors for kidney disease, how to get tested and how kidney disease can be treated. Kidney disease is a serious and common health problem, affecting an estimated 30 million adults in the United States. Kidney disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. Kidney disease can often get worse over time and may lead to kidney failure. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain your health. The sooner you know about your family history of kidney disease, the sooner you can make changes to help protect your kidneys. To get you started talking with your family about kidney health, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a part of the National Institutes of Health, created the Family Reunion Health Guide. This guide offers basic information about kidney disease and suggests approaches you can take to connect with your family about kidney health. You can use this guide to help make kidney health a family reunion affair. Information in the guide includes materials and tips to help you: Talk With Your Family About the Risk Factors for Kidney Disease Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney disease. You are also at risk if you have a family history of kidney failure or have heart disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide can help you talk with your family about kidney disease and its connection to diabetes, high blood pressure and other risk factors. Encourage Family Members at Risk for Kidney Disease to Get Tested Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. This is because you can have kidney disease without any symptoms. The good news is that when kidney disease is found early, there are ways to protect your kidneys by managing your blood pressure, eating a healthy diet and being active. There is no cure for kidney failure, but dialysis or a kidney transplant can help you live longer and feel better. The sooner you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can take steps to prevent more serious health problems. This is why it’s important to talk with your family about the need to get tested. Make a Family Commitment to Kidney Health You can reduce your risk for developing kidney disease by taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle. Diagnosing and treating the disease early can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide shares ideas for how you can encourage family members to take steps to protect their kidney health. By being your family’s kidney health champion, you can help ensure that your family enjoys many more reunions to come. Learn More For more information about kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, high blood pressure and more, or to access the Family Reunion Health Guide, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. Talking to your family about health issues can help you all live longer, better lives.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

Life, Love and Lima Rotary By Amanda Dudek
“T
hat little extra effort, that positive example for someone else to see, a smile, a hello; that’s Rotary,” said Lima Rotary Club President, John Skiptunas. “Having someone to bring you back up when you’re down, being there for weddings and anniversaries, plowing driveways, getting people unstuck: that is Rotary.” Skiptunas certainly practices this. Under his two-year leadership, Lima Rotary has experienced a rebirth. “We are 80 years-old and the smallest club in our district,” said Skiptunas. “We recently lost our beloved mentor and motivator, Charlie Johnston, as well as our former president, selfless and generous Steve Robinson. It was a major setback.” “We currently have 10 people,” Skiptunas shared. “So, our focus has really been reaching out into the community to find new members. Right now, we have 5 candidates we are ready to bring into our club. Our mantra from last year was, “Be the inspiration,’ and we are looking for people who are doing just that.”
Lima Rotary presents Drake Family with check from pancake breakfast; Charmaine Yarka (middle, 2nd from left) & John Skiptunas (front, 1st from right)
“One new member was on social media offering free dinner to anyone in need because she happened to have extra. I invited her to an event, and she jumped in with both feet and embraced it,” Skiptunas said. “If you are already living the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self,’ the Lima Rotary wants to give you a bigger platform to serve others and a second family with whom to do so.
hoped to have 150 people and a donation of $600; instead, we had 300 people and $1,600!
On an international level, Rotary service is reflected in fighting disease. “We pay dues to our global foundation which supports our primary cause which is to eradicate polio,” Skiptunas explained. “The Gates Foundation has pledged a great deal of money to eradicate polio, as well. We have seen 16 cases of polio this year, and we are in hope of one day having zero cases ofpPolio.”
Lima Rotary also offers two scholarships for Honeoye Falls-Lima School and two for Lima Christian School, and it hopes to work with Elim in the future.
Locally, Lima Rotary embodies service through its Community Action events. “We host our Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Thanksgiving Dinner for Seniors and Tree Lighting event and sponsor a booth at the Crossroads Festival,” Skiptunas stated. “Many of these are a way to give back to the kids. At our Easter Egg Hunt, for example, we see anywhere from 150-300 kids. We have to realize that they are our future. We can instill the goodness of our nature and Rotary by giving back a little bit.” The Tree Lighting event is also a highlight. “We take the kids out and choose a tree,” he said. “On the night of the event, a choir or two sings carols. The fire department illuminates the whole front of Town Hall and decorates their fire engine. Last year, we had over 350 people here. The Marketplace donated some cookies. Now former Lima Rotary President John Santa Claus came in on the Skiptunas handed club presidency over to antique fire truck, handing Charmaine Yarka on June 25, 2019 out candy canes and taking photos with the kids. This year, we want to have activities for the kids like decorating ornaments and sugar cookies and mini stockings.” Future club president Charmaine Yarka stated, “Lima Rotary is four things: dreamers, thinkers, motivators and administrators.” Skiptunas agreed, adding that right now, he and other Rotary members are volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to build a house in a Lima. “Also, we are holding an international Books for the World Program,” he said. Lima Rotary also recently held a pancake breakfast for a Lima family that experienced major sewer damage to their home. “The community rallied around them in various ways,” he said. “We had

Skiptunas credits the community. “Whenever they see that little Rotary wheel on an event, they respond and come out,” he said. “We are small, but we have the biggest hearts.”
Even as they move forward, the Lima Rotary will never forget those it has lost. “We will still have Steve Robinson’s hotdog cart at this year’s Crossroads Festival, thanks to a special friend’s generosity,” said Skiptunas. “We will call it The Hotdawg Hut, and its proceeds will go to the Steve Robinson BOCES Scholarship Fund.” “We also plan to plant a tree in Charlie Johnston’s name,” said Skiptunas. “There is going to be a pavilion, also. It will be a permanent part of our town along with a plaque.”
We have the biggest hearts. - John Skiptunas, Club President, Lima Rotary
Meanwhile, Lima Rotary members are busy preparing for their August 3rd Crossroads Festival. “It will be Charmaine’s first event as president,” said Skiptunas. “She has a great vision.” Yarka thanked him, stating, “The more members share ideas and communicate with each other, the better our club will be. This will help us to fulfill our Lima Rotary Club Motto: “Love your town.” Lima Rotary needs volunteers, and there are many ways to be involved. “Rotary Members, Friends of Rotary which are non-member volunteers, RotarAct for college students and InterAct for high schoolers,” Skiptunas said. “These are all ways you can volunteer. The smiles on the kids’ faces at these events are so gratifying,” he added. “We feel amazing that we did that.” For more information, visit www.limarotary.org. Work-related stress is a significant issue for many professionals. But working in tandem with their employers can help professionals effectively cope with that stress.
The Dolomite Group is an affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and E-verify employer.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
Who you know Landing a new job is often about what you know, but getting a foot in the door is also largely influenced by who you know.
